Scandal-Tainted MF Global President Still Serving as EPA Financial Adviser

Before he became president of MF Global, the bankrupt brokerage firm that lost $1.2 billion in client money, Bradley Abelow spent time as New Jersey’s treasurer and former Gov. Jon Corzine’s chief of staff. In those roles, Abelow served alongside Lisa Jackson, who led the state environmental protection department and eventually succeeded Abelow as Corzine’s chief of staff. Jackson now directs the Environmental Protection Agency in the Obama administration, and Abelow, despite a full-time job at MF Global, is still serving alongside her. The former Goldman Sachs executive holds the title … More

Feulner: Hurtling Toward a Train Wreck; Common-sense Americans Hit the Brakes

Heritage President Ed Feulner writes today in the Washington Times:  Nobody could have been happier to see August end than the liberals pushing government-run health care. The month, to put it mildly, was not kind to President Obama and his allies. Their worst nightmares were realized — Americans examined the bills being proposed and turned out in great numbers to voice their opposition. What we can expect in September is another matter. Desperate times call for desperate means — or so liberals will think. Those who oppose this hostile takeover … More

Get Real About Getting Rid of Nukes

Although folks like President Obama, U.N. chief Ban Ki-Moon, and IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei have long dreamed of a nuclear-free world, it’s time to get real and admit that the road to zero they want to take is unlikely to get us there. Proponents of denuclearization may have the best of intentions, but their belief that others will quickly rid themselves of nukes only if the U.S. does it first is unrealistic. As Heritage Vice President Kim Holmes explains in today’s Washington Times, their claims don’t stand up to the … More

How Did Waxman-Markey Pass the House? Bribes Like This

From today’s Washington Times: When House Democratic leaders were rounding up votes Friday for the massive climate-change bill, they paid special attention to their colleagues from Ohio who remained stubbornly undecided. They finally secured the vote of one Ohioan, veteran Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo, the old-fashioned way. They gave her what she wanted – a new federal power authority, similar to Washington state’s Bonneville Power Administration, stocked with up to $3.5 billion in taxpayer money available for lending to renewable energy and economic development projects in Ohio and … More

Heritage Mourns Loss of Journalist Mary Lou Forbes

I was saddened to hear yesterday of the passing late Saturday of Mary Lou Forbes, who first provided a much-needed canvas for conservative opinion and policy solutions more than a quarter-century ago, as editor of the Commentary pages of The Washington Times. She relished that job until she collapsed two weeks ago under the weight of an undiagnosed cancer. Mary Lou was more than a good journalist, although she got a kick out of showing the men’s club at the old Washington Evening Star that she could report as fast … More
