UAW Defends Democracy? Wolf Hired to Guard the Hen House?

Look out, America. The United Auto Workers union is prepared to do whatever it takes to “defend democracy,” including using the tactics of the protesters in the Middle East. And they say their first priority is re-electing President Barack Obama. But behind the rhetoric, the UAW is busy waging a war on democracy in order to shore up its base of support. No, this revelation of the UAW’s plans doesn’t come from any secret memo obtained under cover of night. The news comes straight from the mouth of none other … More

Big Labor Makes Big Spending Demands on President Obama

The Big Labor full-court press is in full swing ahead of President Barack Obama’s speech next week in which he will roll-out a new jobs plan. What do they want? You guessed it: more government spending (as if an auto industry bailout, Obamacare, and a $780 billion stimulus weren’t enough.) Yesterday, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka continued beating the drum and calling for President Obama to aggressively push forward with more government spending in order to stimulate the economy, all while abjuring conservatives’ complaints that Washington is spending too much. Trumka wants … More

Morning Bell: Big Labor Is Bankrupting Our Country

Last month when the White House released its visitor log for the first six months of the Obama presidency, one name appeared far more often than any other: Service Employee International Union (SEIU) President Andrew Stern. Stern has every right to expect to be welcome in the Obama White House. He has repeatedly bragged about the fact that under his leadership, the SEIU spent $60.7 million to elect Barack Obama president. Stern and Obama collectively support ever expanding federal government programs and state government bailouts which are rapidly bankrupting our country. … More

A Union Divided Against Itself: The UAW’s Conflict of Interest

In the wake of the General Motors and Chrysler’s bankruptcies, United Auto Workers finds itself in a complicated position. In some sense it has achieved a Marxist ideal: it has gained (at least some) control of its means of production. The UAW owns 55 percent of Chrysler and 17.5 percent of GM. Consequently, however, the UAW is placed in a strange situation when negotiating with Ford.

    Meet GM’s Bondholders: Chris Crowe

Throughout the next two weeks, the Foundry will be highlighting some testimonials of General Motors bondholders. When President Obama describes bondholders, you get the distinct impression of pinstripe-suit-wearing bankers with scotch in one hand and cigars in the other. However, that is far from the case. In fact, GM bondholders are retirees, parents, civic organizations, even union workers. But since the main aim of the Obama Administration is to pay as much taxpayer money to Big Labor Unions as possible, they neeed to create a bad impression of bondholders. Meet … More

Auto Bailout Update: Drove My Chevy to the Levee…

The news of another auto bailout was met with a whimper last week. Surely, the little noticed request for an additional $22 billion was partly overlooked because $22 billion just doesn’t seem like a large amount of money after President Obama spent $787 billion of your borrowed dollars the week before. But the fact remains that many questions remain unanswered by Detroit, and unasked by Capitol Hill. For example: How much money is the Federal Government committing to GM and Chrysler? With the $39.4 billion in loans to GM and … More

    Ford’s UAW Contract

Surely, some concessions can be made, right?

    Sending Arsonists to Fight Fires

In an Op-Ed peice about the Auto-bailout that appeared in today’s DC Examiner, Lori Roman equated the government bailing out to sending arsonists to fighting fires: One would think that, since the government created the crisis, they should fix it, right? No. They should STOP interfering with the markets, not interfere more! They should let lenders make prudent loans and let energy producers produce energy and they should let the automakers get out of this mess without government meddling. You don’t send folks with gasoline to put out a fire. … More
