Reagan’s Legacy to ‘Preserve the Constitution’

Ronald Reagan communicated timeless truths about America— truths about freedom, limited government, hard work and opportunity—and these truths guided him while he was in office.  A thinker and avid reader of history, Reagan was guided by the first principles of the American founding, especially the idea of ordered liberty in our nation’s charter—our enduring Constitution. In the opening paragraphs of his first inaugural address in 1981—much of which he personally drafted—President Reagan echoed the preamble of the Constitution, calling on “We the people” to do whatever needs to be done … More

    A Champion of Freedom Passes

Of all those whom we at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation have honored with the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom—and they include such famed defenders of freedom as Vaclav Havel, Lech Walesa, Vladimir Bukovsky, and Harry Wu—none surpasses the courage and commitment of  Elena Bonner, who passed away last Saturday. Known best as the widow of Andrei Sakharov, the renowned Soviet dissident and Nobel Prize Peace Prize winner, Mrs. Bonner—despite serious health problems—became a tireless advocate of human rights and unflinching opponent of political oppression. When Mikhail Gorbachev, still head … More

Vindicating Reagan’s Drug Policy…25 Years Later

Two weeks ago, the U.S. Sentencing Commission promulgated a permanent amendment to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines that reduces jail time for those convicted of offenses related to crack cocaine.  Liberals would love to portray the new drug sentencing standard for crack cocaine as a success story, in which the Obama administration undid a draconian Reagan-era drug policy.  Critics are unduly harsh on Ronald Reagan’s drug policy, blaming the Great Communicator for driving the hysteria in the 1980s which led to the enactment of unfair criminal drug laws. However, liberals might … More

VIDEO: Celebrate Ronald Reagan’s 100th Birthday

This Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s birth. A man of many talents and accomplishments, his sense of humor and contagious optimism are perhaps most missed today as our nation faces a host of difficult challenges. As we recall in our new video celebrating his birthday, when Reagan took office our nation was in a similarly precarious situation. With high unemployment and inflation at home and the looming threat of communism abroad, America was at a crossroads. But in the face of all these obstacles, President Reagan … More

    See the ’33 Minutes’ Trailer

The Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce our first full-length documentary, “33 Minutes,” and to release the first trailer for the film. The documentary has a simple premise:  An intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM,  armed with a nuclear warhead could be launched and strike the United States in about 33 minutes – and right now, we have no defense against it.  Heritage produced this documentary, subtitled “Protecting America in the New Missile Age”  and set for release in February, to increase awareness of the need to realize the Strategic Defense Initiative envisioned by President … More

Cheney Marks 25th Anniversary of Strategic Defense Initiative

Vice President Cheney commemorated the 25th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative in a speech tonight to The Heritage Foundation (video below). Reagan’s nationally televised address from the Oval Office on March 23, 1983, changed the course of history, challenging scientists to build a missile defense system to protect America from foreign attack.     Looking back on Reagan’s famous speech, Cheney noted that opinion leaders and some American politicians dismissed Reagan’s vision at the time. Only years later, however, did the speech’s impact become clear — rattling … More
