Obamacare was pushed into law with the hope that the more Americans learned about it, the more they would like it. That has not happened. Americans remain strongly opposed to the health law and its expansion of the role of government in their lives. The more they learn about the law, the less they like it and the more they search for an alternative, like Heritage’s Saving the American Dream proposal, that empowers patients, reduces costs, and ensures access.

Side Effects: Obamacare Causes Some Insurers to Stop Offering Coverage for Kids

The effects of Obamacare are getting weirder with each passing month. Now, new requirements created by the law are causing some insurers to consider no longer offering “child-only” policies to avoid having to raise rates. Most children are covered by parents’ employer-provided insurance or by government programs. But some parents … More

Obamacare Loses Big in Missouri; Voters Reject Individual Mandate

Missouri voters dealt Obamacare a significant setback yesterday, approving a statewide ballot measure with an overwhelming 71 percent of the vote. The vote was the first time citizens had an opportunity to cast a ballot on the unpopular health care law. Missouri’s measure prohibits the federal government’s enforcement of the … More

Court Refuses to Block Virginia’s Obamacare Challenge

A United States District Court has just announced that Virginia’s lawsuit, led by Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, may proceed. This lawsuit, file shortly after Obamacare’s passage, represents the state’s direct challenge of the new law. This lawsuit is separate from a larger effort of several states, led by Florida. Side Effects: Small Businesses Won’t Find a Friend in Obamacare

One of the promises of Obamacare was that it would give folks working in small businesses access to affordable care. Unfortunately, like so much else in the law, it doesn’t look like that’s going to work very well. To solve the problems small firms have with finding affordable health coverage, Obamacare … More

Want to see what Obamacare really looks like? Take a gander at this dazzlingly complex chart mapping out America’s new health care system (the chart was developed by the House Joint Economic Committee). Side Effects: Premium Hikes for Arizona State Employees, Courtesy of Obamacare

Arizona v. President Obama. This time it’s not about immigration but health care. A recent letter from the Arizona Department of Administration to 135,000 state employees informed them that, depending on their type of coverage, they can expect their monthly health insurance costs to jump by as much as 37 … More

Another Public Option? How Many Do We Need?

The public option has reared its head once again. Last week, H.R. 5808 was introduced in the House Ways and Means Committee to add a public option to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The plan would be administered by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Payment … More

Ready for the Next Trillion-Dollar Bailout?

Obamacare has been rightly blasted as fiscally irresponsible, yet few have noticed what may be Obamacare’s largest ticking entitlement time-bomb: the CLASS Act. My new op-ed on the subject is here, and my new report, co-written with Jim Capretta, is here. CLASS is a new long-term-care insurance program that was … More

New Bill Not Necessary: Public Option Already in Obamacare

Like many federal efforts in Washington, last week’s reintroduction from House Democrats to create a public health insurance option, which would become part of the 2014 insurance exchanges created by Obamacare, is a bureaucratic redundancy. Stuart Butler points out that the health reform law already has its own “public option” … More

Side Effects: Obamacare Encouraging Insurers to Cut Corners

With or without Obamacare, health insurance costs are on the rise.  And that has businesses searching for more affordable options. One increasingly popular option: health plans covering services provided by a relatively small number of participating doctors and hospitals.  These plans are most attractive to small employers, but The New … More
