Escape From New York: Obama Retreats On KSM Trial

Today, the Obama White House asked Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department to look for an alternative site to hold the federal trial of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators. In the last week, the political support for the controversial decision to hold the trial in New York City evaporated. Now, the Obama administration is scrambling to find an alternative location for the federal trial. Instead of looking for a new ZIP-code for a costly federal trial, the administration should send those detainees back to a military commission … More

Monday, September 14, in New York City, federal and city counterterrorism agents raided homes of those suspected to be involved in terrorist plots against the United States. As part of a joint terrorism task force activity, this is a big win for law enforcement, and it shows just how far information sharing has come in terms of linking together federal, state and local resources. There are those that try to say the U.S. isn’t any safer since 9/11. Or that the threat has gone away. Neither are true. As my … More

When Teachers Don’t Teach At All…

In a move that is hardly inspiring New York students to work hard and achieve greatness, the AP reports that you can now make $70,000 a year sitting around and doing nothing for eight hours a day. All you have to do is become an ineffective New York City public school teacher. The city’s policy of paying teachers not to work is more than just a waste of money. It adds to the utter lack of accountability that plagues the system and undermines any reason to teach students well. Because … More

Free Trade Fact of the Day

Worried about a “rising tide of protectionist sentiment” the Partnership for New York City released a report on the benefits of direct foreign investment in New York City: The report estimated that businesses in the city that were controlled from abroad accounted for about $58 billion of the city’s total economic output of $570 billion in 2006. Those enterprises employed nearly 200,000 workers, or more than 5 percent of the city’s total employment, the report said. … Mitchell L. Moss, a professor of urban policy and planning at New York … More
