Senate Showdown on Earmarks Pits Presidential Candidates Against Leadership

A bipartisan effort to put a one-year freeze on earmarks has attracted the support of at least 14 senators, including each party’s presidential contenders, setting the stage for a showdown Thursday over wasteful government spending. Despite the surge in support over the past 24 hours, however, Senate Democrat leaders are threatening to derail the plan. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Budget Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) have vowed to stand in the way of the amendment, sponsored by Sens. Jim DeMint (R.-S.C.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.). … More

Morning Bell: What Really Happened in Berkeley

According to the Los Angeles Times, “After Backlash, Berkeley Welcomes Marines,” and according to the Associated Press, “Berkeley Eases Anti-Marines Stance.” Nothing could be further from the truth. The San Jose Mercury News got it right: “Berkeley Council Becomes Home to Intolerance.” In order to arrive at their misleading headlines, here are just some of the facts the AP and LAT left out of their stories: The Berkeley City Council passed a resolution applauding residents and organizations that “volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of … More

Carbon Trading Is an Invitation to Fraud

The Heritage Foundation has many able analysts who have done great work on energy and the environment. But since the absolute farce that is the cap-and-trade “solution” to global warming is now the preferred plan of all three major presidential candidates, the need to highlight succinct analysis from others has never been greater. Bryan Leyland, who is chairman of the economic panel of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition, summed up not only why the European Union’s carbon cap-and-trade program is a failure, but also why all carbon cap and … More

Morning Bell: Arbitrary Deadlines No Way to Run a Military

Now that headlines across the world proclaim “Al-Qaeda leaders admit: ‘We are in crisis. There is panic and fear.’” the campaign promises of prominent political leaders here in the United States are finally coming under much-needed scrutiny. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer discussed the policy and rhetoric of all three top presidential candidates this Sunday with retired Gen. Colin Powell. On John McCain, Powell provided the necessary context for McCain’s recent comments on the possibility of the U.S. being in Iraq for a hundred years: Now, you notice, in the very last … More

Morning Bell: Avoiding Our Own Cap-and-Trade Calamity

Possibly the scariest outcome from Super Tuesday is that the top three candidates to become president all support a cap-and-trade approach to global warming. Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) are all smart and capable leaders, but they also have been completely engrossed in White House politics for more than a year. Hopefully when they have the time to examine recent evidence they will reject their current proposals, which include costly carbon limits that will harm our economy without positively affecting the climate at all. … More

McCain Says Bush Redeemed Himself on Earmarks

Sen. John McCain, a leading opponent of earmarking, today praised President Bush for his plan to issue an executive order cracking down on pork-barrel spending. During a conference call with bloggers, McCain said he was rejoicing at the thought of angry appropriators in Congress. “Thank God he’s doing it,” McCain said of Bush. “I don’t have to tell you about the billions in these committee reports. … The president redeemed himself to a great degree in my eyes by what he’s going to say tonight [in the State of the … More

    McCain Supports Anti-Earmark Executive Order

A day after his victory in the New Hampshire primary, Sen. John McCain spoke with bloggers about a variety of issues, including the option of a presidential executive order canceling earmarks in the omnibus spending bill. Erick Erickson of RedState posed the question to the Arizona senator, who has long been a critic of pork-barrel spending. Here is the exchange, courtesy of Jim Geraghty of National Review: Erick Erickson: Senator Coburn wants investigation into Don Young’s appropriation got back into bill after it had been stripped out. Would you support … More
