House and Senate Cloakroom: April 12-16, 2010

House Cloakroom: April 12 – 16 Analysis: After a two week recess the House eases its way back into work with a light week full of suspension bills.  However, if the Senate is able to finish up its work extending provisions such as unemployment insurance, COBRA, and the Doc Fix those items could possibly, though not likely, be seen on the floor this week as well.  Additionally, the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Stevens could possibly put many of the legislative priorities for Congress and the administration in flux over … More

Secretary Clinton Seeks Middle East Partners for Iran Sanctions

In his inaugural address, President Obama vowed to reach out and engage with the international community including those nations hostile to the United States.  However, it is clear that Obama’s engagement with Iran has been nothing short of a failure.  In her recent remarks with the Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal, Secretary Clinton admitted that Iran “has failed to reciprocate.”  Instead, Iran announced that it will increase its enrichment capacity and produce twenty percent uranium.  The Obama administration is now preparing to move ahead on the sanctions front in … More

Obama’s Russia Policy: A Disappointing First Year

Commenting last week on this alliance during a visit to Heritage, former Spanish President José Maria Aznar said: It’s necessary in my view to bring forth this Atlantic Alliance, this Atlantic link, and to avoid confusion between the allies in the future. The confusion Mr. Aznar refers to is in particular the result of the Obama administration’s weak stances on Iran and Venezuela.

Guest Blogger: Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA) on Energy Security

One year ago today, a bipartisan Congress voted to lift the ban on oil and gas drilling off America’s coasts and cleared the way for our Nation to responsibly develop more of our own energy resources, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and create new jobs. Next, the Bush Administration put forward a robust plan that would open up additional areas to drilling on the United States Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). However, immediately after taking office, the Obama Administration threw up a giant roadblock on the path to new American … More
