    Millennials Embrace American Exceptionalism

In the wake of last week’s Independence Day celebrations, millions of young Americans are embracing their freedom. While Generation Yers may have the stereotype of being self-centered, many of them not only view themselves as exceptional — they hold the same view of America as well. A recent poll commissioned by Generation Opportunity reveals that the majority of Millennials embrace American exceptionalism. The survey, conducted by the polling company/WomanTrend, found 56 percent of Millennials embrace the notion that is America is qualitatively different than other nations. While some may want … More

    Washington in a Flash: Fireworks

The nation’s capital was treated to a beautiful fireworks display last night. You can expect more of the same this week in Washington as the clock ticks toward the Obama administration’s Aug. 2 deadline for a deal on the debt limit. The House returns from a weeklong district work period and Senate is back in town after canceling recess for a rare Independence Day workweek.

London Celebrates Ronald Reagan’s Legacy on Independence Day

London today celebrated Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday and his role in bringing down the Iron Curtain with the unveiling of a 10-foot bronze statue of the former President at the U.S. Embassy in England. British Foreign Secretary William Hague and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke at the event, which drew a crowd of 2,000. Reagan’s statue will stand alongside those of former Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The tribute is one of many commemorations of Reagan’s legacy held across Europe over the past week.

Morning Bell: Celebrating America’s Enduring Principles

America was born on July 4, 1776, with the passage of the Declaration of Independence. Today, as we celebrate our great country 235 years later, we reflect upon its meaning. The Declaration announced to the world that the American colonies were free and independent states. But this alone does not make the document or America revolutionary. What is revolutionary about the Declaration is not that a particular group of Americans declared their independence under particular circumstances but that they did so by appealing to a universal standard of justice: equality. … More

VIDEO: Public Opinion on Debt Ceiling and Government Spending

Bankrupting America is out with a new video today running though recent polling data on the debt ceiling and government spending. As lawmakers in Congress continue to debate the issue — the Senate will skip its Independence Day recess for the first time since 1974 — it’s worth reflecting on public opinion. And if you’re looking for a good weekend read about the history of the debt limit — and the implications for our country — check out my colleague J.D. Foster’s work. It’s a comprehensive overview on what Congress … More

Why We Celebrate Independence Day on July 4

We celebrate America’s birth on July 4. Why? It was July 2 that the Continental Congress resolved, “That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.” Shouldn’t that day, as John Adams predicted, “be the most memorable epoch in the history of America”? No. On July 2 we effected our political separation. On July 4 we declared to the world the principles our nation is built upon – a creed that applies to all men and all times. Happy Independence Day! Thomas Sanford is … More

America, the Great Beacon of Liberty

The signing of the Declaration of Independence was a glorious day for our country’s history. With a stroke of a pen, our founders sealed an enduring document representing the triumph of liberty over tyranny. And yet, centuries after this, one of the most important events in our country’s history, it’s easy to gloss over the Fourth of July as just another holiday. To appreciate why our independence from the British crown is not only a cause worth celebrating, but also defending, we must remember what our founding fathers fought and … More

President Reagan, Our British Friends, and the 4th of July

In 2001, Kiron Skinner, Annelise Anderson, and Martin Anderson edited a superb book that all friends of freedom, and of President Ronald Reagan, should read.  Titled Reagan in His Own Hand: The Writings of Ronald Reagan that Reveal His Revolutionary Vision for America, it published a selection of Reagan’s daily radio broadcasts between 1975 and 1979. Reagan composed and wrote these broadcasts himself, and the book reproduces them just as he wrote them.  They provide indisputable proof that Reagan gave lengthy, serious thought to the major issues of the day, … More
