Live from the Gulf: Obama Team Blocks Media from Oil Spill

Last week, CNN’s Anderson Cooper reported that the federal government was blocking media access to coastal areas around the Gulf, preventing them from taking photos and reporting on the environmental damage of the oil spill. You can watch the video and see Cooper is livid that the Obama administration is treating him and his colleagues this way. Cooper of course compares this to Katrina when media were blocked from…well we’re unsure what the media was blocked from in Katrina, since the photos and video from the Superdome, the Convention Center, … More

Church Over State: A Picture Says a Thousand Words

For decades now the secular Left has constantly pressed at every opportunity to keep any semblance of religion away from anything that is somehow connected to government.  There must be a complete and unbridgeable separation of Church and State, they always say, a misreading (and misuse) of a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1801.  That wall “must be high and impregnable,” the Supreme Court ruled in 1947. “We could not approve the slightest breach.” As a result, we can’t have prayers in public schools, at football games or graduations, and … More

Does the Government Pose a Bigger Threat to Toyota Than its Sticky Pedals?

Toyota’s bad press has been for its sticky pedal incident certainly isn’t surprising, but is all the negative attention warranted? When asked about the Toyota recalls, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood responded by saying, “My advice to anyone who owns one of these vehicles is stop driving it, and take it to the Toyota dealership because they believe they have the fix for it” and that “we’re not finished with Toyota.” Hood later toned down his remarks but immediately after his “stop driving” comment, Toyota’s stocks plummeted. Even after recovering some, … More

Morning Bell: A Sobering Wake Up Call

Defending mounting job losses despite his administration’s $787 billion stimulus package, Vice President Joe Biden told ABC News George Stephanopoulos last month: “The truth is, we and everyone else misread the economy. The figures we worked off of in January were the consensus figures and most of the blue chip indexes out there.” This is just not true. Yesterday the White House released their Mid-Session Review admitting that President Barack Obama’s policies would force our nation to borrow more than $9 trillion over the next ten years. Commenting on the … More

    Correcting Krugman’s Nonsense

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman was less than honest when he totally misrepresented my 2001 essay, “Taking Charge of Federal Personnel.” My point was simple: To achieve significant change, a president needs key appointees dedicated to pursuing his vision and mandate, not entrenched D.C. “wise men” intent on pursuing policies that reflect their own “expert” views. To promote his own “expert” view that the Bush Administration was unqualified to govern, Krugman lifts a sentence fragment from my essay and places it in a false context. Yes, I urged then … More

The Auto Bailout: So Wrong in So Many Ways

There’s been a lot of good discussion on the auto bailout over the past day or so. And by good discussion, I mean pointing out how utterly ridiculous an auto bailout is. Our own James Gattuso lays out Congress’s plan in his latest paper: “Eligibility for the program is limited to firms that submitted restructuring plans to Congress on December 2–thus limiting participation to General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, since they were the only firms asked to submit such plans. Aid would be provided in two stages: an immediate bridge … More

When Government Gets in the Way…

When nuclear experts discuss nuclear energy, they generally talk about three different parts: the front end of the fuel cycle, business and operations, and the back end of the fuel cycle. The front end includes all of the activities necessary to produce nuclear fuel. This means mining, enrichment, fuel fabrication, etc. Once the fuel is dropped into the reactors, the business and operations crew take over. They are responsible for the plants and provide the electricity. The back end of the fuel cycle is where spent nuclear fuel, or nuclear … More
