FOX and the Sharks

Fox News haters are circling in the water so furiously that the sharks are calling their lawyers. The phone-hacking scandal that led to the closing of one of the world’s oldest papers, the News of the World, has shaken Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp empire, and the whiff of blood in the water is obviously exhilarating for his enemies. So we’re visited by that rarest of events: an overseas news story receiving wall-to-wall coverage by domestic news outlets. Any American who hasn’t yet heard that the Murdoch-owned British tabloid hacked into people’s … More

Washington in a Flash: Off to Iowa

President Obama continues his barnstorming tour today with a visit to Alcoa’s plant in Davenport, IA. He’ll be making another high-profile pitch for American manufacturing — the second in as many weeks — as he attempts to regain trust on the economy. A new McClatchy Newspapers-Marist poll reveals just 37 percent of registered voters approve of his handling of the economy. Obama is not the only politician in the Hawkeye State today. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is in Pella, IA, for the premiere of filmmaker Stephen Bannon’s new movie, … More

    Fire NPR

National Public Radio’s dismissal of Juan Williams is a powerful indictment of NPR’s practices and corporate culture. Small wonder voices are once again calling for the federal government to defund NPR—which gets 16% of its budget from tax payers. The Heritage Foundation has long called for such defunding. A veteran journalist, Williams is a liberal with whom I disagree more often than not. His integrity, his bravery, his refusal to be intimidated by peer pressure cannot be doubted, however. He has written thoughtful books on the civil rights movement and … More

Video of the Week: Sharpton Says American People Voted for Socialism When They Elected President Obama

After the health care vote last night, Reverend Al Sharpton told Fox News:  “I think that this began the transforming of the country where the President had promised. This is what he ran on.” When the interviewer interjected that many view the vote as a step towards socialism, Sharpton didn’t skip a beat, responding: the American public overwhelmingly voted for socialism when they elected President Obama.

Slaughter Rule Not Defended by President

Yesterday FOX News Special Report interviewed President Barack Obama about the process for passing the President’s controversial and unpopular health care proposal.  Fox’s Bret Baier asked some pointed questions to see if the President supported or would even talk about the controversial “Slaughter Rule” being considered by the House to pass Obamacare. The President would not directly answer repeated questions about a potentially unconstitutional Deem and Pass rule, but he seemed to tacitly support the idea. There is no precedent for legislation of this scale to be jammed through Congress … More

Friends and Foes of Educational Opportunity

Proponents of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program and families currently in the program have reason to be frustrated over Congress setting the course toward its elimination. But as Amanda Carpenter reports in today’s Washington Times, they’ve also found a “strong ally” in the fight for school choice – Juan Williams of Fox News: Mr. Williams, who is also senior national correspondent for National Public Radio, hosted an event at the National Press Club on Friday to promote a short film produced by the think tank about the recent decision to … More

What is the White House’s Fox News End Game?

It has been an interesting and puzzling couple weeks watching the White House communications office at work. First, on October 11, Anita Dunn publicly rebuked Fox News on Howard Kurtz’ CNN show calling it the “research arm of the Republican Party.” Then, we learned Ms. Dunn counted Mao Zedong as a “favorite philosopher” and it seemed like a score was settled and everyone would move on. But the White House stepped up their attack on Fox News last Sunday by sending Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Senior Advisor David Axelrod … More

Video: First Obamacare Vote Adds $247 Billion to Debt

“It’s very telling that the first vote that we’re going to make on health care, Neil, is to add a quarter of a trillion dollars to the federal debt.”

Video: Chief Diversity Officer Seeks To Stifle Free Speech

We’ve written about this issue before, here and here, but the Fairness Doctrine is rearing its ugly head again. This time, however, its being pushed by Mark Lloyd, newly appointed Chief Diversity Officer of the Federal Communications Commission. In the name of “diversity,” Lloyd recommends that “Local public broadcasters and regional and national communications operations should be required to encourage and broadcast diverse views and programs.” It’s not hard to read between the lines and understand that successful conservative pundits will be the ones pushed off the airwaves by this. … More
