House of Representatives Makes Legislative Data More Accessible

Citizens across America will have a powerful tool to hold their elected leaders accountable come January. The House of Representatives today adopted new standards that increase transparency and improve access to legislative data. All of the information will be publicly available in a searchable format on one website. “With the adoption of these standards, for the first time, all House bills, resolutions and legislative documents will be available in XML in one centralized location,” said House Administration Chairman Dan Lungren (R-CA). “Providing easy access to legislative information increases constituent feedback and ultimately … More

New Mobile App Makes U.S. House Even More Accessible

Republican leaders this week unveiled a new mobile app that helps Americans follow the action of the House of Representatives from the palm of their hand. The app is available on the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, and Android phone and tablet. The app, called WhipCast, is the first government app to be simultaneously released on all three major mobile platforms. The project was spearheaded by House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who stars in the promotional video. “Prior Congresses wrote and passed legislation in the dark of the night,” wrote Brian … More

Chart of the Week: Cutting All Defense Spending Would Not Solve Debt Crisis

House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) is a man on a mission. He’s making the rounds on Capitol Hill to convince his colleagues, particularly those on the 12-member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, that they should avoid cutting defense spending. McKeon has a point — and it’s one that is backed up by Heritage calculations from Congressional Budget Office data. This chart reveals that even if defense spending was eliminated entirely, entitlements would continue to fuel the debt crisis. Making reforms to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is … More

Setting the Record Straight on Federal Disaster Funding

Liberals have spent the past two weeks asking Congress to write a blank check for federal disaster funding. They’ve concentrated their attacks on House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) for seeking offsets in other areas of the budget to cover the additional aid. They’ve portrayed Cantor as a callous conservative, suggesting that his stance is extreme and hypocritical. The facts tell another story. The Wall Street Journal reveals that it’s actually congressional Democrats, not Cantor, standing in the way of additional disaster funding. House Republicans have offered a plan that … More

Protecting America Means Preventing Its Decline

This past tuesday, Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) spoke at The Heritage Foundation’s annual spring President’s Club meeting, noting: Now should be the time for America to rededicate itself to the strategy of:  1) peace through strength, and 2) recommitting ourselves to standing up for democratic and peaceful allies. Why is now the time? Because total defense spending is projected to decrease from about 4.9 percent this current fiscal year to roughly 3.5 percent in 2015; and unless entitlement spending is reined in, it will consume all federal revenue in … More

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) today spoke at The Heritage Foundation’s President’s Club meeting and delivered the following remarks on America’s national security policy: Thank you for the kind introduction. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to participate and offer my contributions to Protect America month. I want to start by acknowledging the tremendous job by civilians and law enforcement in their vigilance surrounding the failed terrorist plot in Times Square this past weekend. We are gathered here today to make a sober assessment of the condition of … More

In the Green Room: GOP Whip Eric Cantor’s 7 Point Job Plan

Yesterday, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) outlined a seven point common sense plan for job creation here at the Heritage Foundation. Item number 1: “Halt Any Proposed Rule or Regulation Expected to Have an Economic Cost, Result in Job Loss, or Have a Disparate Impact on Small Businesses.” As Cantor explained in his speech, that means, among other things, a merciful end to Obamacare.

Morning Bell: The Road to Recovery Begins with the End of Obamacare

When President Barack Obama was trying to sell his $787 billion economic stimulus plan to the American people, there was no louder cheerleader for the plan than Mark Zandi of Moody’s Economy.com. Zandi confidently produced scientific tables purporting to prove that for every $1 the Obama administration gave to states, GDP would grow by exactly $1.36. Zandi later produced an analysis claiming that Obama’s stimulus would create 2.2 million jobs. But as millions of Americans now know all too well, Zandi was very, very wrong. President Obama’s stimulus has completely … More
