Conservative Party Wins Big in Canada

While the world was watching the news coming out of Pakistan about Osama bin Laden, closer to home voters in Canada went to the polls on May 2 and gave Tory Prime Minister Stephen Harper a solid majority in Parliament. Conservatives have won or are ahead in 167 of the country’s 308 electoral districts. Harper will head the first conservative majority government in Canada since 1988. The Christian Science Monitor is calling it a “political earthquake” for Canada, noting that the traditional center-left Liberal Party finished a distant third with … More

    Heritage Foundation 661,000 Members Strong

There is a hunger in America for conservative principles and policies, as the explosive growth in Heritage Foundation membership demonstrates. Today, we have more than 661,000 active members. Over the past year and a half, traditional American values have been put through the ringer. The liberals in Washington are working quickly and persistently to diminish principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom and a strong national defense – all conservative principles. But their progressive ways have met an obstacle: the American public.  And it’s more conservative than they thought. … More

Gingrich: Conservatives Must Be A Movement of “Yes”

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has a message for conservatives if they want to succeed in changing the debate in Washington: conservatives must be a movement of “yes,” and they must stand for what they will do. He delivered that message today at The Bloggers Briefing, a gathering of conservative bloggers from across the capital, held at The Heritage Foundation. Gingrich also has a slogan for conservatives – “2 + 2 = 4” – which he describes as a way to slow down the political debate in America … More

Tea Party 101: Prepare for Tax Day

Tomorrow, thousands of Americans across the country will organize on Tax Day to protest the tax, borrow, spend and bailout policies of Washington. Whether large or small, these demonstrations will all have one message in common: Enough! Over the past three months, Americans have seen an already out-of-control government spend their borrowed dollars as if a trillion dollars is a drop in the bucket. After the bailouts that put the White House at the head of a number of major corporations; after a stimulus bill that the Congressional Budget Office … More

Is Subsidizing Energy the Way to Go?

The ethanol mandate taught us that energy subsidies for commercial energy projects can lead to unintended consequences and ultimately be counterproductive. Yet Washington’s attempts to address America’s energy questions continue to rely heavily on preferences, mandates, and subsidies for energy commercialization. This is causing energy experts from across the political spectrum to begin questioning the role of subsidies in energy policy. Is this an area where liberals and conservatives might agree? The Heritage Foundation and Nonproliferation Policy Education Center are hosting an event tomorrow, March 24th, with leading analysts from … More

    Blogging the American Dream

Earlier this morning, at the Defending the American Dream Summit hosted by Americans For Prosperity, I attended a blogging seminar hosted by my colleague at Heritage, Rob Bluey. He spoke to an audience of AFP members ranging in age and experience. He provided an overview of everything that is needed to know about blogging. It is an important step for conservatives, young and old, to embrace the web. For far too long the right has trailed the left online. There is no reason for it. Americans For Prosperity and RightOnline … More

Straw Polls, Straw Men at Box Office

Sarah Palin maybe forgot to mention this in the debate, but we’re sort of having a pop culture election a month before the presidential one. This weekend, movie lovers have one of those rare opportunities to tell Hollywood they want to see more films that honor America’s traditional values and founding principles — the stuff Governor Palin talks about so well. Even better, those who trust in God — be they conservative or not — also can vote at the box office by staying away in droves from a movie … More
