White House Amnesty Association’s Spring Meeting

It’s that time of year again—the time for White House meetings aimed at placating the pro-amnesty lobby. There is lots of placating to do. It is almost an election year, meaning that soon politicians will engage in the time-honored tradition of duck and cover—which means they are definitely not interested in passing any kind of controversial legislation. President Obama has very few avenues by which to pursue his campaign promise of granting amnesty for the 11 million (down from 12 million) illegal immigrants inside the United States. With limited options, … More

Schwarzenegger on Obamacare: “They Got the Corn, We Got the Husk”

One of Obamacare’s biggest dirty little secrets is that in both the House and Senate versions of the bill, over half of those who gain health insurance do so through Medicaid. Both bills force more people who are currently eligible for Medicaid to enroll–and the states would be left to pick up the tab without any additional federal funding. For states already on the brink of insolvency, Obamacare will be a financial disaster unless they can all secure deals like the one Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) secured for Nebraska. California … More

Morning Bell: We’re About to Have a Jobs Terminator in Washington

In a taped message shown yesterday to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Governors Global Climate Summit,” President-elect Barack Obama reiterated much of the same rhetoric from the campaign trail: a federal cap-and-trade system, cutting carbon emissions by 80% by 2020, $15 billion a year in new spending, and 5 million new green jobs. The globe-trotting delegates at the posh Beverly Hills conference swallowed every word. London-based Climate Group chief executive Steve Howard told attendees: “It looks as if we’re about to have a climate emissions Terminator in Washington.” Let’s leave aside … More

Time to Say Hasta la Vista, Nuclear Moratorium

It’s time for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to put his money where his mouth is. He’s a vehement believer that the United States needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and in March he advocated the use of nuclear power in America. He said, I myself think that nuclear power has a great future, and I think that we should look at it seriously again. I know there are people who are scared about it, and I know there are certain environmentalists that put the scare tactics out there, and … More

Free Trade Fact of the Day

While California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger may be out to lunch on global warming, he sure does understand the benefits of free trade. He writes in the Wall Street Journal today: Unfortunately, Congress has scuttled a vote on the first of the three FTAs, the Colombia agreement. Who gets hurt by this? American workers. Why? Because open trade provides more markets for the products they make, and because Congress has already given Colombian exporters duty-free access to the American market for more than 16 years. In the 538 days since the … More
