Businesswoman Lori Davis didn’t mince words at Tuesday’s U.S. Senate field hearing in Lafayette, LA: “The Obama administration has done absolutely nothing to protect, help or support us as an industry that feeds and powers this nation.” Davis told the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, “We need answers, we deserve answers, we need to return to work.” Davis, owner of RIG-CHEM, was one of many victims who gave a very human face to President Obama’s ongoing Gulf drilling moratorium, currently not scheduled to be lifted until November. The adjustments …
A drilling moratorium aimed at big oil is a drilling moratorium aimed at local oil as well. That’s the message being sent by the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce in Lafayette, Louisiana as they revive the “Energy Division” from several years of dormancy. Why now? According to The Daily Advertiser, “challenges from the moratorium and other anti-industry legislation signaled a need for its return, said Chamber President and CEO Rob Guidry.” In short, they are fighting the federal government. The Chamber was amongst those who organized last week’s 11,000 strong …
The Obama administration’s recently re-imposed deepwater drilling moratorium is now reportedly stopping shallow-water drilling as well. The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources issued a release Tuesday showing that the moratorium has resulted in a near-total decline of approved shallow-water drilling permits: Approved permits for shallow water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico have dropped significantly since the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling earlier this year, with only one approved new well permit so far in July. In the 11 months prior to the moratorium, the federal government approved an average …
“I’ve been working to dismantle Obamacare,” declared Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT). “We have to fight this terrible law that’s a threat to liberty itself.” These comments came during a June 21st blogger conference call held by Sen. Hatch in which he sought to rally support for two bills aimed at representing “a strategic attack on the central tenants of Obamacare.” The American Liberty Restoration Act (S. 3502) would strike forthcoming individual mandates from the current law, while the American Job Protection Act (S.3501) would repeal what Hatch calls, a “job-killing …
First, McDonald’s was sued because its coffee was just too darned hot; now they’re being sued because their Happy Meal toys are just too darned good at marketing food to kids. The Washington, DC, Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has served McDonald’s a letter of intent to sue in California court “if the fast-food chain continues to use toys to promote Happy Meals.” Why? They say the toys lure kids into eating unhealthy foods: “McDonald’s is the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children,” said …
Despite differences and variations, fathers often represent a formative influence in our personal development. These days, though, it has become increasingly common for a child to be fathered by a man who isn’t married to the child’s mother – and may never get to know his son or daughter. Robert Rector, Heritage’s senior research fellow for domestic policy studies, steps up to the microphone for a special Father’s Day conversation on this hidden cause of childhood poverty in America. In the resulting audio podcast, Rector talks about the need for …
