Heritage Presents Luce Award to Former Vice President Cheney

Former Vice President Richard B. Cheney, already enjoying a season of public reflection on more than four decades of service to the nation, last night received The Heritage Foundation’s top honor for contributions to the conservative movement. The Heritage Board of Trustees presented the Clare Boothe Luce Award to Cheney, 70, at a banquet attended by more than 1,000 of Heritage’s biggest donors and supporters, capping their President’s Club gathering at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park hotel. “Dick Cheney has set a lifelong example of what it means to be … More

    When Fathers Become ‘Courageous’

The critical importance of committed fatherhood to the well-being of children is the theme of  “Courageous,” the latest little faith-based movie that could from Georgia-based brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick. The film made a strong beginning at hitting home: “Courageous” was Fandango’s weeklong king of advance ticket sales as it opened Friday on more than 1,150 screens. The movie is the fourth increasingly polished offering from the Kendrick brothers’ Sherwood Pictures, makers of  the Christian-themed “Flywheel,” “Facing the Giants” and “Fireproof.” In “Courageous,” four sheriff’s deputies and an out-of-work carpenter must … More

    Overpopulated Rhetoric

Neglected news out of the Crazy from the Heat Department is word that the global overpopulists are in a terrific snit because soccer superstar David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, dare to continue producing children. Talk about a crime against nature. Fortunately, as The Wall Street Journal noted, the Beckhams had the good sense not to get hot under the collar after the birth of their fourth child drew a scolding from Population Matters, a tone-deaf British nonprofit. Heritage’s Chuck Donovan quickly rose to the Beckhams’ defense. Donovan penned an … More

Why Religious Freedom Should Be Precious to All

Grateful neighbors wished to honor the seven Brooklyn firefighters riding Ladder 101 who perished after pulling up to the burning north tower of the World Trade Center on a crystal-blue morning nine years and 10 months ago. The community won city approval to rename a portion of a street near the Red Hook firehouse, also home of Engine 202. When new street signs with the words Seven in Heaven Way went up last month, though, the atheist lobby began to raise heck. It’s “the wrong thing to do,” one American … More

A Little Drama in Defense of Marriage Is No Vice

Struck by the rapid disintegration of the family in American life, Heritage’s Chuck Donovan recently called for a “Marshall Plan for Marriage” to rebuild the traditional institution and re-establish its importance. In an interview with National Review Online’s Kathryn Jean Lopez posted today, Donovan talks candidly about why this work is crucial to the nation’s economic, social and moral well-being. At the outset of their Q & A, Lopez questions Donovan’s intentional shorthand reference to America’s multibillion-dollar effort to rebuild Europe after World War II, which got its nickname from … More

    A Timely Call to Prayer

In the eternal scheme of things, it’s no coincidence that today’s National Day of Prayer dawned four days after intrepid U.S. Navy SEALs rid the world of Osama bin Laden. As Heritage’s Chuck Donovan writes this morning for NRO, the White House on Friday evening issued President Obama’s proclamation for today’s observance within hours of setting in motion the special forces raid of the al-Qaida leader’s secret compound in Pakistan. In hindsight, Donovan notes, Obama’s written words on the 60th annual observance resound with new meaning as the president headed … More

Paul Revere with a Bedside Manner

Dr. Hal C. Scherz’s tenacious work bringing together doctors across America to make the case for repealing Obamacare brought him a deserved reward earlier today. During a lunchtime ceremony in Dallas, the Atlanta physician accepted The Heritage Foundation’s 2011 Salvatori Prize for American Citizenship. Heritage annually presents the $25,000 prize, named for the late entrepreneur and philanthropist Henry Salvatori, to an American who advances the principles and virtues of the nation’s Founders. Dr. Scherz, a tireless advocate for patient-centered health care reform as well as managing partner of Georgia Pediatric … More

Something Happening Here: Bob Dylan Goes to China

It’s a hard rain that’s been a-fallin’ on Bob Dylan from some blustery climes. This is because the 69-year-old folk-rock icon supposedly broke the sellout meter with a Chinese concert debut in which he performed songs approved in advance by the Communist regime. Not that it’s Dylan’s job to stand up to dictators, tyrants and thugs — whether visiting their countries or hosting them at home and, say, the United Nations. Last time we looked, that was President Obama’s gig. Writing this week on Chinese authorities’ most severe crackdown on … More

Education Reform Lesson One: Review Past Mistakes

Congress needs to take stock of the daunting burdens of paperwork and red tape imposed by expanding federal regulation of local schools and beware creating new obstacles to student achievement, one of Heritage’s education experts testified yesterday before a House subcommittee conducting the first such review since the Clinton administration. “I commend this subcommittee for renewing attention to a pressing problem in education policy today. Serious investigation like this into the scope and effects of federal intervention has not taken place for more than a decade, despite massive growth in … More
