  • Morning Bell: The Mount Vernon Statement

Yesterday, I joined a broad coalition of conservative leaders representing a wide spectrum of the movement including fiscal, social, cultural and national security conservatives, to sign The Mount Vernon Statement. In light of the challenges facing the country and the need for clarity, we needed to produce this defining statement of conservative beliefs, values and principles. It is the culmination of a thoughtful deliberation about our nation’s principles. I was proud to participate in that discussion, and to chair the committee that drafted the statement. Constitutional Conservatism: A Statement for … More

Morning Bell: The State of Our Union

The President of the United States tomorrow will inform the Congress on the State of our Union, as he is constitutionally mandated to do. The past 12 months have seen our country head down a dangerous course, and The Heritage Foundation can only hope that the President will use this time of reflection, coming on the heels of a stunning electoral loss, to change direction. You must recognize, Mr. President, that the State of the Union is not good. You need a new approach and fresh domestic and foreign policies. … More

Heritage Mourns Loss of Ambassador James R. Lilley

Heritage Foundation President Edwin Feulner issued the following statement on the death of James R. Lilley: “Jim Lilley was a giant in the China policy world. Both the experts who worked with him, and the amateurs, like me, who learned so much from him over the decades, have stood in awe of the mastery of the language, customs, influence, and subtle nuances of Asia policy by Jim. Everyone, of every political stripe, respected and admired Jim as America ’s premier ‘China hand,’ knowledgeable and principled, always keeping America’s interests at … More

Heritage Mourns Loss of William Safire

The Washington political scene has lost one of its best minds with the death of William Safire. I first met Bill almost 40 years ago, when he was writing speeches in the Nixon White House and I worked on Capitol Hill. He later moved on to write for The New York Times op-ed page, where he usually propounded a sensible, conservative path that stood in contrast to almost all the newspaper’s other writers. It was, for 30 years, the best thing in the Times. Safire knew that words mattered. He … More

Half a Million Heritage Members Can’t Be Wrong

The Heritage Foundation has reached an important milestone in our ten-year Leadership for America campaign. At the end of August, our membership rolls topped half a million for the first time, reaching 515,000. That’s up from 395,000 at the start of the year and 281,000 at the start of 2007. This brings us one step closer to our goal of one million members by 2017. These members are concerned Americans from every state, from all walks of life, who have supported our work financially in the past two years. (Not … More

Heritage Foundation Mourns Loss of Sen. Edward Kennedy

WASHINGTON, AUG. 26, 2009—Heritage Foundation President Ed Feulner today issued the following statement on the death of Sen. Edward Kennedy: Even in Washington, it’s possible to disagree without being disagreeable. We should keep that in mind as America mourns the passing of Sen. Ted Kennedy. Sen. Kennedy’s career was marked by the passion he brought to his work, his dedication to serving this great country, his respect for the institution of the Senate and his pursuit of bipartisan compromise. Washington will certainly be less vibrant without him. This is a … More

Heritage Foundation Mourns Loss of Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung

It is with the deepest personal sadness that Mrs. Feulner and I have learned of the passing of our esteemed friend President Kim Dae-jung. It is a profoundly sad day for the Republic of Korea. President Kim was a truly historic figure. South Korea’s passage from authoritarian rule to democracy is a testament to his tireless advocacy despite years of persecution. From my early meetings with him when he was living in exile in Washington, to many meetings with him in the Blue House, and on his visits to the … More

Heritage Foundation Mourns Loss of Columnist Robert Novak

Since 1973, The Heritage Foundation has regularly hosted presidents, members of Congress, Cabinet secretaries, prime ministers and other foreign dignitaries.  But perhaps our favorite “royal visitor” was the “Prince of Darkness.’ That was Robert Novak’s nickname in Washington. But those who knew the man knew the title was clearly a joke.  Despite his dour demeanor, Bob was a truly affable and giving man.  He loved a good joke and could tell one, too. From Bob’s first assignment with AP in the Chicago Bureau under a long-time Feulner family friend, Al … More

Heritage Mourns Loss of Journalist Mary Lou Forbes

I was saddened to hear yesterday of the passing late Saturday of Mary Lou Forbes, who first provided a much-needed canvas for conservative opinion and policy solutions more than a quarter-century ago, as editor of the Commentary pages of The Washington Times. She relished that job until she collapsed two weeks ago under the weight of an undiagnosed cancer. Mary Lou was more than a good journalist, although she got a kick out of showing the men’s club at the old Washington Evening Star that she could report as fast … More

    Open Letter on Health Care

To the President and Congress of the United States From Edwin Feulner, Ph.D. President, The Heritage Foundation Health care reform has been a central goal of The Heritage Foundation since our creation more than three decades ago, so we welcomed President Barack Obama’s call for a common effort to find the right solution to this public policy challenge. We believe that putting families, not the government, in control of the system is the key to success. We want to strengthen our health system based on that principle. The trouble has … More
