U.S.-based charity Spirit of America was founded more than a decade ago to support American troops and diplomats by providing assistance to local communities in more than 30 countries around the world.

In this TV clip, “CBS This Morning” highlights one recent example in Iraqi Kurdistan, where the group is sending tens of thousands of boots to children displaced by the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. With temperatures dropping to 30 degrees and children wearing only socks and sandals, the boots are arriving at a critical moment.

The heartwarming story is a reminder of how Americans are pitching in to help others, and why Heritage Foundation founder Ed Feulner singled out the privately funded group last year for “exhibiting this kind of selflessness.”
