  • Morning Bell: The Administration's Messy Story on Libya Attack

Washington is notorious for dropping news it doesn’t want scrutinized too closely on the last day of the work week. So last Friday was a convenient time for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) to release a statement about the Obama Administration’s conflicting accounts of the attack that killed the U.S. Ambassador to Libya.

The ODNI statement appears intentionally vague on exactly what it knew when and who was told. It does little to address concerns that the President’s senior supporters seemed more concerned about minimizing criticism of the White House than addressing the threat of transnational terrorism.

The question remains: Why did senior officials issue contradictory and wrong accounts of what happened during the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi?

It took the intelligence community more than a week to get out the clarifying statement—and its “explanation” came only after the Administration started taking heat for initially downplaying the involvement of terrorists in the Benghazi attack. This raises concerns that the ODNI statement is more about providing political cover for the White House than answering serious questions about the misstatement from the President’s spokespersons.

From the outset, there was more than a little confusion about what government officials knew when. As Heritage’s Helle Dale noted on Thursday:

Reportedly, U.S. intelligence sources knew within the first 24 hours of the attack that not only was al-Qaeda involved, but also which members and even where one of them lived. And yet, Administration officials toed the line unfailingly that the murders were provoked by the YouTube trailer for Innocence of Muslims.

The Administration’s official line on embassy attacks was already shaky, after Twitter posts, press statements, and other official pronouncements related to the attack on the U.S. embassy in Cairo were pulled from State Department websites.

But the worst was Ambassador Susan Rice’s defense of the Administration on television last weekend. Rice vigorously asserted that the attack in Benghazi was not “premeditated,” even as she must have known top Libyan officials were already declaring that the attacks were planned.

The Administration’s response to Benghazi drew even more scrutiny in the following days, as the President delivered a muddled speech to the U.N. General Assembly that appeared more focused on placating anti-American sentiment than expressing outrage over a terrorist attack on American citizens.

By the end of the week, it was clear that the White House was taking more heat for its handling of the aftermath of the Benghazi attack than it wanted. And that was when the ODNI statement suddenly appeared, stating that it had initially informed senior officials that “in the immediate aftermath, there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously.” Only later, the statement adds, did it receive additional evidence pointing to a deliberate attack.

Clearly, acknowledging that terrorism is alive and well looks bad for the Obama Administration’s rhetoric, which has portrayed Obama as having vanquished Osama bin Laden and thus ending the “war on terrorism.” The chaotic handling of the Libya attack points to one of two culprits: incompetence or dishonesty. The American people deserve the truth, whatever that may be.

    1. Gab Jomarie says:

The Obama administration was busy concocting lies with the help of the main stream media. Too bad for this stupid administration, truth has a way of getting out. How inconvenient for the "liar in chief".

    2. Sharon Kohl says:

Obama knows nothing about foreign affairs, Like he said with 4 people dying it was just a bump in the road. What do you expect from him, he has been campaigning for 31/2 years

      • Guest says:

Yes. I feel so sad for the Ambassador because his baby child will never know him. What they did, and Obama trying to claim it was just over a video, was disgusting. I am so sorry for the other men, they were Seals and they loved their country. God will judge and the terrorist attacks will be dealt with in God's way.
A cowards way to use terrorism. Only a person with an evil heart kill innocent people like they did and the rioting and destruction is on their heads.

    3. DMJ says:

Obama thinks the ambassador and three other Americans killed are just "bumps in the road". Couldn't get more callous that that. Obama needs to go.

    4. Lloyd Scallan says:

This Obama led administration cannot even remember which lie they told to whom. The people under Obama, and the national news media, are so scared to allow the truth about both ‘incompetence and dishonesty” to get out, they concoct anything that they think Americans will believe.

    5. jdelaney3 says:

Of course, Americans deserve the truth. But, from this ruthless regime? Please!

The only peaceful solution is to throw Comrade Barry and his Progressives out of office in November. And if that doesn't work, his record-breaking 934 imperial edicts, aka executive orders, provide MORE than sufficient grounds for impeachment and removal.

    6. RennyG says:

2 Chronicles 8:14 – Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and "heal their land!" AMEN!

    7. Cherie Chase says:

Nixon was impeached on much less.

    8. Solace says:

Truth is someone one does not get from a deceiver who perceives life's situations only as they relate to himself, so reverts to his pattern to lie.

    9. Blair Franconia, NH says:

In the story of Pinocchio, every time Pinocchio told a lie, his nose grew. The same thing happened in the 1980
movie Airplane! The nose of Leslie Nielsen's character, the doctor, did the same thing every time he told a lie.
Too bad it wasn't like that in real life.

    10. Village Conservative says:

Impeachment of the President ; The UN Ambassador should resign; although, I believe she was intentionally directed in what to say even though the truth was know. Corruption in the Nixon Admin. could not even come close to what is going on in this one; Fox News reported this AM that that the STATE. DEPARTMENT!!! is shredding documents and e/m to keep from the public re: various activities; i.e: Libya, Fast/Furious, etc. Can you even imagine four more years of this; we really could not survive

    11. Benton H Marder says:

The core of this whole fiasco is that Obama is a narcissicist and that he is surrounded by a court of sycophants. He has hardly ever been willing to accept responsibility for his errors and crimes. He is enabled in this delusion by a corps of sycophants in the media, academia, etc. He has never been willing to squelch the constant sycophancyl in truth, he seems to revel in the adulation besetting him on all sides and at all times. The essential matter is character, and the electorate is fool enogh to swallow the illusions and the lies.

    12. Stephen says:

The truth is, that you have to assume that everything that comes out of a politician, is a blatant bald-faced lie! People, please never trust your government, the best you can hope for are lie's by omission.
I've lived through a lot of administration's and this one is beyond belief, it seems that the larger lies,
the deeper his supporters go into denial. It's amazing to watch and nearly impossible to believe that so many appear to worship Obama.
Denial and worship are a dangerous mix as recent events have shown.

    13. Ron B says:

Everything goes back to Obama's DEEP BOW to the king of Saudi Arabia. Rules of war, no "terrorists", etc. Wake up America. If you snooze you lose.

    14. Rober says:

It is painful to know that we have a consummate liar in the office of president and a national press that seems to have graduated from the little-red-schoolhouse. Worse, we are well into a second generation of people that were very deliberately and very poorly educated and have little concept as to what this fine nation is supposed to be all about.

    15. Mike says:

      obamas credibility is in question.

      • Paul Gabriel says:

MIke…from the day he took his oath of office, his credibility was in question. There are more unanswered questions about the POTUS and most of his life. Too much is locked and sealed away. And those who start uncovering the truth about him, they are called RACIST. "obamas credibility is in question." is an understatement.

    16. Karen says:

It’s both incompetency and dishonesty…..a trademark of this administration sad to say.

    17. Barbara Sbrogna says:

This administration, and particularly the President, hold the record for politicizing everything they do. But to take that to the area of critical national and international security issues is simply beyond the pale. And while lying to the American people should not be accepted (Richard Nixon was forced to resign for that reason and no one had died), a more compelling question, that commentators seem to only skirt, is why were all of our embassies in the entire Middle East left so vulnerable and clearly without any protection leading up to and beyond the anniversary of 9/11?? As far as I'm concerned, this corrupt, naive administration, starting with the President and Hillary Clinton, are guilty of causing the needless death of our ambassador and Navy Seals. Their families should be shouting their outrage from their rooftops.

    18. Doreen Curtis says:

I have not heard anyone in the news media or on the radio talk shows about what has happened to all the confidential and classified material and documents that were in the embassy offices. The crime scene has been completely destroyed and I can only assume, since the FBI has been forbidden to go there, that these documents are now in the hands of the Libyan government, or in the hands of CNN. To my mind there isn't much difference between those two. But isn't anyone concerned about this?

    19. Wayne says:

If anyone is waiting for the truth to come out of the White House you are going to have a long wait. We have not been told the truth on anything since this administration has been in office. How can the American people vote for this man that continually lies, if he is talking he is lying.

      • auhunter says:

What I don't comprehend is the Embassy was bombed three months earlier. That should have raised a few flags then. Then a week before the attack, the Libyan government notified our intelligence service and the State Department that the area was becoming a hot zone, and then 48 hours before the incident they notified us again that an attack was imminent. and we did NOTHING. Oh! Yes we did the State Department let Stevens go back to Libya and allowed him to make the trip to Benghazi. Since Hillary is responsible for the whole diplomatic corps, to me that makes her complicit in his murder.

    20. TAZMAN says:

Leadership 101: You cannot effectively push a piece of wet spaghetti.

    21. Donald DaCosta says:

"Clearly, acknowledging that terrorism is alive and well looks bad for the Obama Administration’s rhetoric, which has portrayed Obama as having vanquished Osama bin Laden and thus ending the 'war on terrorism.'" This pretty much says it all for me. It flies in the face of Obama's attempt to take full credit for killing Osama Bin Laden, the desired implication being that he and he alone dealt a death blow to the Al Queda terror network. That this conclusively contradicts this claim puts Obama and his collaborators in a quandry, one they amateurishly attempted to obfuscate with the You Tube video story. And the ODNI? Let's remember that the man at the top of this organization, James Clapper, is the guy who famously or infamously said that "the Muslim Brotherhood is a secular organization." Obama's pick for the director of the Department of National "Intelligence." Is anybody scared yet?

      • PaulE says:

Very well said. The whole narrative about that idiotic video on the Internet was nothing more than a poorly formulated cover-up strategy. This administration is so accustomed from pivoting from one failure to the next, while the mainstream media tries to sweep it all under the rug, that they think no one notices the bodies, both figurative and literal, that they leave in their wake.

    22. Billy Bob says:

Nothing is settling right with this one. I have never been a conspiracy theorist but, this is very downplayed by all administrations, very little specific details. We all know that was a safe house and there are many questions on how he got into the country in the first place. Some have gone and said he was on a weapons shipment, so why the covering up? My gut guess….(and it's just a guess) is that his ambassadorship is a cover and potentially a CIA agent, why soooo much hush. The Congressional Incident committee came out of session sating "That was a complete waste of time". Well, that's my 2 cents for what is worth.

    23. Bob Conrad says:

      Classic Obama leadership!

    24. lizaz says:

They're trying to hide the fact they've been giving taxpayers' money to arm the rebels and insurgents….and I believe some of them turned on us and murdered the Ambassador and three other Americans. You can't buy these people….it won't work!! It's time to remove this "administration" in November and elect Romney/Ryan. They are men of character and integrity and can be trusted!!!

    25. Jet says:

I’m just hoping all the non-believers have finally come to their senses. Or at least listen to Fox News, not comentaters but the news. At least you have somthing to compare with other sources. I find I get the full story from Fox.

    26. Way to go Mr. President, sitting on the sidelines…..AGAIN, while believe it or not, CNN walks into the embassy days after the attack and gets a hold of the Ambassadors journal just to catch the wrath of the White House for doing so. Hey, lets send them some more money, that will fix everything. Can you set your golf clubs aside long enough to write them a check Mr President?? Is it possible for you to engage in your duties that you were hired for???? -or- do you need ANOTHER vacation???

    27. Louis G. Bosco says:

Think of what this world would be like without a militarily strong USA. It would to the likes of the Putins,Ahmadinejads,Chavezs and the Chinese.. Goodby freedom and goodbe Europe and Isreal.

    28. eva says:

Heritage, would you please define for me the term " high crimes and misdemeanors" ? Thank you.
