  • Voter Fraud: Who's Counting in the Upcoming Election?

On Friday at noon, The Heritage Foundation will hold its second event in the Preserve the Constitution series when it hosts John Fund and me talking about our new book Who’s Counting? How Fraudsters and Bureaucrats Put Your Vote at Risk.

With the pundits and pollsters predicting that the upcoming presidential election may be one of the closest in history, everyone should be concerned about potential fraud or bureaucratic mistakes affecting the outcome of the election. As the Supreme Court said when it upheld Indiana’s voter ID law in 2008, fraud can make the difference in a close election.

Who’s Counting shines a light on the many problems that exist in our very decentralized election system. For those who claim that voter fraud does not exist, the book provides many examples of actual fraud that have occurred in elections, including:

    • A 1982 gubernatorial election in Illinois in which it is estimated that 100,000 fraudulent votes were cast in Chicago;
    • A 2005 Tennessee state senate race that was overturned because of fraud where the winning margin was only 13 votes; and
    • A successful 14-year vote fraud conspiracy in Brooklyn, New York, that resulted in thousands of fraudulent ballots being cast in state and federal legislative races through impersonation fraud at the polls.

We know that fraud is a continuing problem. Last week, a congressional candidate in Maryland was forced to withdraw after it was discovered that she had illegally registered and voted in both Maryland and Florida in the 2006 and 2008 elections. And an Arkansas state legislator just resigned from office after he and three others pleaded guilty to committing voter fraud in a 2011 election that the legislator won by only eight votes.

Who’s Counting exposes the inner workings of a biased, ideologically driven Justice Department that is doing everything it can to prevent improvements in the integrity of the election process. But the book doesn’t just talk about the problems; it also makes recommendations for reforms that can improve the integrity of the election process. And it demolishes the false narratives used by opponents of common-sense reforms such as voter ID requirements.

Joining me at the Friday event will be John Fund, formerly of The Wall Street Journal and now the national affairs columnist for National Review Online. It will be hosted by Edwin Meese III, chairman of the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation and former Attorney General of the United States under President Ronald Reagan. You can RSVP here or view the program online.

    1. Buel Stewart says:

How many legitimate votes will be erased this election? Simple question. Thanks to DOJ lawsuits against states, many illegal citizens and even dead people could vote in this election. The Justice Department says that 'disenfranchisement' is the reason for the lawsuits. States have a constitutional right to set their own voting rules. But the extreme left Obama Justice Department wants votes from 'whoever in the hell wants to vote', regardless of their legal status as a voter. So, dead people can possible vote in some states, which every one of those votes would erase a vote cast by a veteran, who lost limbs, who lost his wholeness as a result of defending the constitution of the United States. Is this justice? Is this right?

Hundreds of Thousands, in Chicago alone. This has been going on since the 50's that I know. My dad's cousin always said Mayor Daily wanted everyone to "Vote Early and Often". 80% of the people buried in the cometary voted Democratic. You could obtain as many voter ID's for different precincts as you could handle.

This fraudulent practice has been allowed to blossom by both political parties. Even in cases that are mentioned in the article, I don't see significant action being taken to prevent it.

They do recounts in some cases and instead of verifying the count they find additional ballots in desk drawers and car trunks after the election and add them into the established count. Where is the ballot control?

We ask our military to defend us and apparently we are making it more difficult for them to vote… WHY?

    3. Jeanne Stotler says:

I wrote to local and state officials about voter registrations being conducted at 7-11 and WalMart, where forms were handed out to anyone and all you had to do was fill them out and mail in. Of course it says you swear the information is true, BUT who's checking?? No one answered. It use to be you had to register at the registers office and raise your hand taking the oath, prove name, address and birthright, what has happened? I hold the voting procedure as a proud believe that an elected peson is the "Will of the people" not of a particular group. Voter ID i one way to presrve the right to vote to thos who qualify.

    4. Lloyd Scallan says:

How do you think Mary Landrieu (D-LA) got to be a Senator? Bussing voters to the polls, voting as many as five time, paid for each vote, yet when the facts were presented in open federal court, a federal judge appointed by a Democrat president, through the case out. We know it's coming. A book is not not going to save us.

    5. Robert Myles says:

A new twist in voter fraud has been thrown into the mix this yr with the electronic voting machines all owned by a george soros company and being tallied not here in the US but in Spain by who else but a Soros owned company. the votor fraud this yr will be the worst ever

    6. Bobbie says:

Why isn't anyone on the democratic side, protecting voter integrity? Doesn't that say enough in itself?? Democrats have no integrity and cheat in clever ways to prove it all on course and policy destroying America's way. America has higher standards of expectations in the character of leadership that the democratic party lost all respect for…
