  • Heritage Intern Award Winners: A Free Market for Taxis (VIDEO)

Each semester, we bring together more than 60 young leaders from across the country to participate in our internship program in D.C. They are given the opportunity of practical experience working on policy research, marketing, and business, and training in communication skills like blogging and public speaking. They learn about America’s founding principles while visiting important sites including the Pentagon, National Archives, and Mount Vernon. Combining an engaging curriculum with each intern’s individual talents and passion, the Young Leaders Program prepares students for success.

This summer, we challenged the interns to use their creativity to bring conservative principles to life. Heritage President Ed Feulner selected the winning projects. Alex Anderson is the first place winner.

In a city where regulation is abundant, I found it only appropriate to pick an industry where the consumer is directly affected. The D.C. taxi industry is an essential asset to commuters and tourists. Recently, Uber Taxi has entered the market, providing a clean and efficient service. With Uber’s success comes resistance from the City Council and the Taxi Commission.

Why is the council trying to stifle innovation and quality, when the mission of the council is to protect the consumer? Is crony capitalism the root of the problem? Is the council trying to protect its political friends, the Taxi Commission? Cronyism is everywhere. We the consumers need to step up and keep our elected leaders accountable. We need to fight for a free market that ultimately benefits all. Enjoy the video.

Alex Anderson is a junior at Hillsdale College pursuing a career in politics and television broadcasting. He just won CNN’s iReport contest with a video he submitted and will be sent to the Republican National Convention to report for CNN iReport.

    1. Donald John LeFante says:

I can't remember one article from Heritage about the Federal Reserve and the Fed is not mentioned above in teachings to the students. Very suspicious. Do you have a link to the CFR? Please validate my trust in Heritage by writing about the Fed, the IMF, and the World Bank together to show the collusion.

    2. Bobbie says:

too much government adds work and burden, creating more costly and needy than the people they govern, defeats the purpose of government!

Private market is pure and simple, dignified and honest. Their freedom to exist proves it by the freedom of consumers to choose. Obama's Government market is ideologue used to collapse the private, free market and made not to work. Quality of service in government is whatever you can get from people that couldn't or didn't make it in the private sector who aren't held to accountability. We don't value government low quality services at irrational wages or the price controls set by abuse of government authority and the costs of government to control prices unconstitutionally in the private, free market. Where the service is accessible in the private sector, there's no constitutional need for government services coming out of the private sector pockets!!

Government services should not exist at all!! it's unfair!! the government contradicts the rules that sustain the economy dumping government consequences on the private sector!

Clearly noticeable in republicans, they want to work for the people to fix the problems America's government caused, not capitalize on the governing that caused them like the President is with devotion, since he's been in office.

The President says Mitt Romney should reveal his tax records like Presidents previous have done for decades? Why does the President have all of what the people want to know about him, hidden and kept hidden? Keep this contradicting ignorance away from humanity. Why isn't Obama held to the equal standards of a man? More relevant to the highest position is the good will of a man's life's history then what he is able to do with the tax code of the time, unless it's dishonest which Mitt Romney shows no sign of and his background shows no reflection, where obama's hidden one does.

Great video! Congratulations to the Heritage Intern Award winners!
