  • Administration’s DREAMer Policies Fail to Solve the Nation’s Immigration Challenges

Today, the Obama Administration’s policy of deferred action for so-called DREAMers goes into effect.

The policy, announced by President Obama on June 15, will allow as many as 1.7 million illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as youths to apply to stay in the U.S. for two years without facing deportation.

While praised by some as “one of the most sweeping changes in immigration policy in decades,” the program (dubbed Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) does little to actually solve the nation’s immigration challenges.

Rather than unite the nation with solutions to an important national problem, President Obama chose undercut the legislative process and abuse the latitude the President has under existing law in an attempt to effectively implement large portions of the DREAM Act legislation that has been considered and rejected by both Democratic- and Republican-controlled Congresses.

As a policy matter, there are reasonable ways to address the cases of children who were brought to the U.S. illegally at a very young age by their parents—ways that are consistent with conservative principles of immigration reform. Indeed, the U.S. immigration system is broken and in dire need of reform. Our nation’s leaders should work together to find effective, reasonable, and pro-immigration solutions to safeguarding the nation’s borders, promoting the rule of law, and administering a fair and positive immigration and naturalization system.

This should include reforming the visa system to make it easier for immigrants to come to the U.S. legally, expanding temporary worker programs, enforcing laws on the books, enhancing U.S. border security efforts.

Policies that circumvent Congress, however, are not the answer. Indeed, as Heritage’s Matt Spalding explained:

Finding an actual solution through the legislative process would give the law legitimacy and more permanency, and it might even result in a bipartisan agreement.

Instead, the Obama Administration’s deferred action policy serves only to poison the well looking at collaborative solutions for the way forward.

Any hope for true solutions to our nation’s immigration challenges should begin with respecting rule of law.

The president said that this is NOT a path to citizenship, and if that is true then what is it? Is it just a path to government handouts? You see the government out there now advertising for people to go on every program they have. Is this just another way for government to justify even more government workers? Another administrative office to manage the semi illegals?

What was the point of illegally changing immigration laws Mr President?

    2. Lloyd Scallan says:

Obama's policies are not failing according to Obama's agenda. The immigration problems are not to be solved, but to gather more Democrat votes and at the same time add more chaos to the nation. Slowly, more and more Americans are starting to realize the true intent of Obama and his policies. Many, including some in the so called "conservative" media, still refuse to openly admit what is Obama and his final agenda for this nation. These are the ones that must stop hiding under theie desks and start reporting the turth about what is Obama's end game.

Obama is playing Chess while all the rest are trying to play checkers!

      1. Get a bunch of illegals to sign up!

Thus admitting they are illegal and broke a law.

      2. Sentence them for their crime of illegal entry.

Now there is a list of criminals to work from.

      3. Pardon them of their crime.

      4. Make them a citizen!

      5. Give them a SS# , a voter ID card.

Just in time for the elections

      6. Then lets keep the family together and give them all a SS#

and all the hand outs they can carry!

      7. The face of the United States will be changed forever!

      For the worst.

Another way for parents repeatedly deciding to break our laws to dump their children on the U.S. system. We don't have enough jobs for legal U.S. citizens from the ages of 16 to 30. THEY ARE OR WILL TAKE 1.8 MILLION JOBS AWAY FROM LEGAL CITIZENS. Plain and simple.

I feel badly for these young people, unknowingly becoming criminals due to the the actions of their parents. They need to go home and wait in line like all the legal immigrants did.

Calling for "our nation's leaders to work together"? I'm a moderate Independent voter– but it sure looks as if that's exactly what the Dems have been doing for the past 4 years, while the GOP has foot-dragged, filibustered, and farted around! Come on now… Yes, we absolutely need bipartisan work, on this and other issues. But it's either naive or cynical to pretend that anyone except the Democrats has been willing to do that.

    6. Bobbie says:

It's very disgraceful and underhanded of a desperate government to continue to impose this tremendous financial weight and burden with massive contentions on the people of this country whose taxes are spent by egregious government acts to benefit violators of America's principles and law. 31years in America is quite an age not to know your parents did wrong… 31 must be the deal he made with LaRaza.

When will America know people new to this country are doing their part paying the fair share the rest of Americans pay? In the bible it states foreigners are suppose to pay the taxes because they chose to leave their country of origin! Obviously it started out that way in America but didn't stop with American born and all of a sudden whoever the unconstitutional acts and abuse of government authority deems, is now tax exempt?

In today's world of evil acts by humanity, people have to prove they want to live in America to solve the nation's immigration problems America's government laid on us by government's intended failure to enforce it's own law! Whew! One way to prove is respecting the laws. The other is paying your debt to society! Then under common law we can all take a deep breath and mind our own business in appreciation of each other using our own personal, positive respects and getting to know each other if it happens to come to that. America is open to all people, just not ones that like to complicate America. America's government is unjustly and wrongfully open to those.

    7. Ronny Perkins says:

Will this cause SS to go broke even earlier? Wow! What a plan. Now everyone will be in the same mess.
