Latinos Favor Tax Cuts for All, Including the Wealthy

Are Hispanics—the fastest growing demographic in the country— on their way to becoming a reliably voting liberal bloc? Not so fast, especially considering a recent McClatchy-Marist poll [2] that found that Hispanics, by a margin of 62 percent to 36 percent, favor extending tax cuts for all Americans—including the most affluent.

The findings of this poll are clearly a roadblock for liberals’ visions of indoctrinating Hispanics into believing that the government has every right to take more of our hard-earned money to pay for an endless stream of government goodies and services. The poll was particularly encouraging that Hispanics are seemingly not buying the President’s constant class-warfare arguments that taxing the wealthy is a question of “fairness.”

Class warfare makes great political fodder—especially in campaign season—but lousy policy.

In fact, it wasn’t too long ago that President Obama himself told us that “the last thing you want to do is raise taxes in the middle of a recession, because that would just suck up—take more demand out of the economy and put businesses in a further hole.” However, President Obama is choosing to ignore his own sound economic advice in favor of calling for higher taxes on those earning above $200,000—even if it means this policy would adversely impact more than 1.2 million U.S. businesses [3].

Raising taxes on American businesses defies logic, especially when the Hispanic unemployment rate remains in double digits [4].

Rather than punishing successful businesses through punitive tax measures, Congress and the President should look for ways of reducing the regulatory red tape [5] and onerous taxes to reward ingenuity, creativity, and hard work. For many Hispanics, the American experience is a testament that hard work is rewarded in our country, and it is why many of the best and the brightest Hispanics chose to leave everything and everyone behind to come to America.

It’s encouraging to read that Hispanics are not buying what the President is selling when it comes to lousy economic policies packaged under the guise of “fairness.”

If America is to remain the beacon of freedom and the leader in ingenuity and economic prowess, class warfare must be stopped in favor of sound economic policy that allows all Americans to keep more of our hard-earned money.
