  • Obamacare Mandate Forces EWTN to Pay 'Fine on Faith'

The leading Catholic media organization in the world, Eternal Word Television Network, is prepared to pay a “financial fine on faith” likely to exceed at least $600,000 per year rather than comply with Obamacare’s anti-conscience mandate.

EWTN is suing the federal government over the anti-conscience mandate, which requires religious institutions to provide “preventative” services — including abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilization —  in its health plans, regardless of the institution’s moral or religious objections.

This global company — comprised of Catholic Television, Catholic Radio and Catholic News Network — faces significant penalties but won’t violate its principles, according to EWTN counsel Kyle Duncan of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

“We are agreeing to violate the mandate as we are preaching it,” Duncan explained. “This is probably the case for other religious broadcasting stations that we don’t represent, but it’s particularly the case with EWTN.”

This non-profit, tax-exempt organization receives no funding from the Catholic Church or from the cable systems and satellite providers that carry it. Since EWTN relies solely on its viewers for funding, the $600,000 minimum fine threatening the organization under Obamacare’s anti-conscience mandate may especially impact the network.

“The whole mission of EWTN is to propagate and popularize the Catholic faith,” Duncan said.  “Its religious faith is intertwined with its mission. If it had to comply with the mandate, it would essentially be destroying its own ability to comply with its mission. It would be labeling itself as a hypocrite if it said, ‘We exist to promulgate the Catholic faith, and yet, we are acquiescing to practices that violate the Catholic faith.’”

Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, affiliated with the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, recognized the influence that television may have in spreading the Catholic faith. She started EWTN in 1981 by converting a garage behind the cloistered monastery where she lived in Hanceville, AL, into a television studio.

Today EWTN is available in upwards of 150 million households in more than 140 countries and territories. It is notable for its holiday-specific programs, coverage of the Vatican, holiday Masses, and World Youth Day, among other noteworthy events in the Catholic Church.

EWTN is more than a news network. Pilgrims travel to its headquarters in Irondale, AL, to worship in the chapel and attend the televised daily Mass. They also visit the famous Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament and the Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration, a cloistered community, one hour away in Hanceville.

“EWTN itself is a pilgrimage site for people,” Duncan said. “People go and visit the EWTN studios. EWTN has a chapel in its studio. It is a television radio ministry more than just a broadcaster.”

Now the Obamacare anti-conscience mandate threatens to hinder EWTN’s mission to spread the Catholic faith.

Good. I'm glad they are getting fined and thank them for the 600k a year. It will help pay for coverage for many others. Thank you EWTN…i hope many other organizations do the same! All orgs shoudl get fined for refusing to accept science and sticking with silly beliefs…should change the name to 'gullibility fine.' What a bunch of dopes.

      • Steve, OH says:

So, what "science" are we to accept with Obamacare? And how does that impact what religion you practice? You conveniently failed to mention which faith you follow, so that the rest of us can insult your "silly beliefs". Or did you forget that the Constitution guarantees EVERYBODY'S rights to practice whatever religion they want? Talk about dopes. Get an education in our government, then get a life.

Why should someone pick up another person's coverage? In more cases than not, people could work and pay but they choose not to. They live off others paychecks and hard work. The fact is illegal aliens and many young people live off welfare,EBT,WIC, and other handouts because its easier than doing something for themselves. Personal accountability and responsibility are disappearing. Its sad really. We are Nation headed for Socialism.

Your thanks to EWTN overlooks the basic fact that EWTN is being asked to comply with a law that it finds morally objectionable. Students of history will recall that this country was founded because the citizens of the American colonies refused to submit to taxation by the British crown without equal representation in the British Parliament. Not to mention the fact that the American colonials were expected to house and feed the British soliders, who could enter their homes without warning or consent, (among other breaches of liberty), If the government is now allowed to define the exercise of religion, which is a basic freedom guaranteed under the First amendment to the Constitution, who knows what freedoms could be the next to go! Aside from the fact that some of the basic elements of Obamacare that EWTN and other faith based organizations (of all faiths), are being asked to provide such as payment for sterilization and abortion inducing drugs, have been against the tenants of the Catholic faith long before religious media existed. . Think about it, and ask yourself, What if my freedom is the next to go?

And may you die in hell

        • Mustang says:

I would expect nothing else as dying in hell is much more serious then an SOB challenging the Faith of God

    2. Conrad says:

We will do everything we can to never elect a Democrat again.

    3. Bobbie says:

Why such a difference in penalty fees? What harm is EWTN causing and why is non-constitutional government discriminative and overlooked to get to this point?

    4. LF Mazzuckelli says:

Fine??? Isn't it a tax? And if its a tax it can be be repealed by Congress and challenged in court. Yes I know that the Senate is controlled by the D's —— for now.

    5. Rich Pedersen says:

Don't pay the tax. Force the federal government to come after you with armed troopers. Resist.

    6. Irene says:

If EWTN is tax exempt, DON'T pay the tax!

    7. Ron Wieder says:

Obama was legally ineligible to run for or be president. The information is being kept from the Public but even the Democratic National Committee is aware of this. This is Censorship. We cannot allow him to be elected for a second term – in order for our Country to survive. He is gradually bringing more and more Socialism to our country ! Wake up folks !

    8. M. King says:

The Supreme's allowed the bill to stay a law based on the individual mandate being a tax. Since EWTN is tax exempt, there should be noo question. They don't owe a penalty since the court deemed it a tax. That's why the White House is trying to say it is not a tax. Can't have it both ways!

    9. Tom Sullivan says:

There are no Democrats anymore, not the professional Democrats anyway. They are all socialists now. Buying votes with your money, just like in Europe, and well into national bankruptcy.

    10. O2BMe says:

Why do people who call themselves Pro-Choice don't honor everyone's choice? If I don't feel than a baby is or the pregnancy is a disease shouldn't that be a choice I can have? If I want to believe that health care insurance should be just for health purposes isn't that OK? If I don't want to pay for your birth control shouldn't I have that choice? I paid for mine and didn't ask someone else for the money. The only way I can consider the pill a health need is if they ever make it so that it prevents STDs and HIV.

    11. RennyG says:

I wonder if "illegals" are going to have to pay the "tax/penality?? Or are they exempt because of their voting status? You got to give this "guy" credit, he will get "HIS" job done, the Alinsky way!!! Anyone remember Hitler???????

    12. Emerald says:

It is injustice to impose a fine. Any government has the right to impose their ideas to any person or institution. If any person or institution act against their mission and principles just for money, ha!!! what can we expect?

    13. CforUS says:

Thank GOD for EWTN. Ooops, did I just commit hate speech?

    14. John says:

EWTN and the Catholic Bishops continue to take inconsistent positions in the name of their view of morality. They oppose a small part of a health care law that will expand insurance coverage for millions, thereby saving lives. The United States ranks 30th in the world in infant mortality. You cannot call yourself pro-life while opposing a law that will expand access to health care and hopefully improve that dismal statistic. You also cannot call yourself a defender of religious freedom while opposing the rights of those who believe differently the freedom to marry. I would respect a church that refused to perform a same sex marriage. I cannot respect one that would lobby to deny that legal right to everyone in the nation.
