  • VIDEO: Indiana Priest Speaks out on War Against Religious Liberty

It’s a rare moment indeed when Catholic priests speak from the pulpit on political issues, but across the country, pastors and bishops are taking a stand in opposition to Obamacare’s attack on religious liberties.

Those individuals are joining with leaders across many faith backgrounds in saying “enough is enough” — they refuse to stand idly by as the White House mandates that virtually all religious employers, with the exception of churches, provide health care coverage for contraception — including abortion-inducing drugs — thereby trampling upon their constitutionally guaranteed free exercise of religion.

In the above video, Father Sammie Maletta of St. John the Evangelist Parish in St. John, Indiana, lays out the case on why the Obamacare anti-conscience mandate is so offensive to religious liberty.

    1. Good sermon. Well said. As Catholics we are not alone. Many other religious groups support life and oppose the progressive agenda. There is indeed a persecution of the Church in all of this but we need not speak of ourselves as being the "best" or the "only" but rather as a vital part of the overall opposition. Back to the positive and concentrating of returning to the works of mercy as we crush the foe. Don't be deceived, we know who the enemy is.

    2. Slartibartfast says:

If you want to impose your arbitrary rules on other people NOT in your church, that’s not freedom, that’s being a bully. And if you enter the political arena, you MUST pay taxes like the rest of us.

      • Ken Marx says:

You're missing the point, Slartibartfast. This is a constitutional issue. Specifically, the Obamacare proposal is an attempted abrogation of the first amendment as it relates to freedom of religion. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the tax exempt status of 501(C)3 organizations, including churches. Do your homework!

      • Steve says:

Another Constitutional scholar! Thank you for sharing your ignorance of the Supreme Law of our land. I don't blame you, I blame your parents and your teachers. Somebody sold you short.

      • O2BMe says:

All Catholic members and employees pay their taxes. Only the church its self is tax free. They also pay towards their health insurance. These are the people who are loosing their religious freedom in this.

      • FlexoRick says:

        arbitrary rules?
You mean like…Thou shalt not Kill, Thou Shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness…those arbitrary rules? or is it
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Is this the arbitrary rules you speak of.?

    3. Stanger says:

No sir, you are not the only one speaking out against the atrocities being perpetrated on the American people aand/or the church.

    4. frona says:

it is sad but the catholic fell like sheep for obama, i could not believe one word he was saying three years ago, why were you people so blind, i think it was the D at the end of his name democrat, well you got your change and how sad it is for you and all our country, you helped bring our country down with your vote;s god help us if you fall for his words next time around, we as a country has to stand together and vote in a republican, other than that kiss your faith and church good bye

    5. fred merchant says:

Fr. Maletta ,you are right on target. It looks like your Biship has some backbone> Well done. F. merchant

    6. Gary says:

Obamacare has already violated the 4th and 10th ammendments and now Obama wants obamacare to violate 1st ammendment rights. This president is a tyrant and William Penn wrote that "Unless man is governed by God, he will be ruled by tyrants". Wake up America, the tyrant is among us. He is Obama.

    8. RennyG says:

Am I missing something?? I have not heard anything in about a week, about the intrusion on the constitution forcing religious organizations to provide birth control for female workers. What the hell is going on???

      • Mark says:

You haven't missed anything. It's another non-issue used to fan the flames of the uninformed.

    9. Ester says:

Father Sammie, thank you for telling it like it is. Many people are hiding their heads in the sand and do not realize how nations are destroyed and taken over. :They need to read how Hitler conquered most of Europe, burning books, trying to eradicate religions. This, too, can happen in these United States of America and Socialism will be the rule of the country.

    10. ICEMAN says:

is a priest going to be the first new SONS OF LIBERTY….??? GOD, I HOPE SO…..

    11. ICEMAN says:

i submitted a comment, and got this reply:
Your comment must be approved by the site admins before it will appear publicly.
i call that 'sensoring'… obviously, this site is like obama, NO RESPECT FOR THE 1st AMENDMENT…

      • Bobbie says:

Maybe your first comment wasn't gotten to yet? It's commendable and noble for the freedom of an independent organization to conduct rules and terms according to their structure (not government rules by force) allowing you the freedom to comment based on their rules. There are other choices for you. Although You did express your first amendment "right" or you wouldn't have submitted to display your current comment. So there is respect you fail to consider…

There's no guarantee your 1st amendment right will be posted for the world to see and that you can grow up to accept. If you want to guarantee you have everyone's attention that promotes your 1st amendment right to express to the public, that's put on you. Here's advice, write it on a poster board and walk the public streets.

    12. Thank you Father Maletta! This homily was perfect and courageous. If you want to see and hear how this de-moalization happened to this country, please take 18 min. to listen to KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov in an1984 interview explain it.

    13. Cindy says:

I am not a Catholic but I do believe that life begins at conception. I am proud of this priest who is telling it like it is! No church or individual should have to go against their conscience regarding anything! The government of the United Sates has no right to force people to go against their moral beliefs or conscience.. It is beyond belief this is happening in America.

    14. Randy says:

In less than a year we will know how deep the stupidity of the American people goes including Catholics. I have hope and pray that hearts and minds will be open. If things don't change this is the beginning of the end for a great nation. God Bless this priest…….I'm waiting on my pastor and others pastors in our city to step up to the plate. Read….Listen To My Prophets…by Fr. Ed O'Connor….it's an eye opener…you will truly understand what is happening to our world after reading this book. God will not be mocked….it's the final hour my friends.

    15. lIbertas says:

Unless Obama capitulates, I guess we're going to have to take our western civilization and go home.

    16. RMike Loyson says:

As a fellow priest, I am inspired by this homily. Thank you for sharing it. I pray all Bishops would support priest speaking like this from the pulpit.

      • WeeToddEdwards says:

If you are a priest. I would like to know what you think about this so called "christian" comments:

      • john speaker says:

bravo to all who still beleive in god and life the government has far to long overstepped it s boundaries and the progressive movement has been left unchecked for to many years why are our pastors and preists and religous leaders not allowed to have an opion from the pulpit ? are you progressives afraid they may do their job and lead their flock. and as for debbie try a little restraint or better yet abstanence…….! signed firewalker.

    17. Debbie says:

If birth control is a prescription why shouldn't it be covered by health insurance? Would you rather provide the money to raise the children?

    18. bill says:

father sammie is right, on everything he said. why Obama, why are you anti-catholic and anti-christian. there is nothing wrong with our priest speaking on these issues from the pulpit. these issues affect us all GOD bless our priest and please keep speaking out. if any of you don't like it go to another church or join the anti-church of obama.

    19. Peter says:

This Priest did a fantastic job of creating a straw man, then tearing it down. The Catholic Church is NOT forced to use the Insurance exchange set up under the Affordable Care Law.
The Catholic Church is free to self Insure/self underwrite if it so chooses. Government can't stop them.
Should the Catholic Church CHOOSE FREELY to use the exchange, then it should be subject to provide the standard of care that the Affordable Care Law Requires for all insurers listed ON THE EXCHANGE provide. Should the Church however, CHOOSE FREELY to Self insure/self underwrite, they then would not be subject AT ALL to provide the standard of care that the Affordable Care Law requires insurers ON THE EXCHANGE to Provide. The Catholic Church, as it's own insurer, would be free to provide/not provide whatever coverage it so chooses. Government isn't forcing the Church to do anything via the Affordable Care Law. The Church is FREE to CHOOSE to opt out and SELF INSURE.

    20. Patricia says:

We pray that our Nation will be "One Nation Under God' once again. Let us all pray daily until Obama no longer can dictate to us as to how we can worshiip and protect our unborn children.

    21. A.Wing says:

And so,once more you hide behide your God and church. Is it not time to face the fact that it is a matter
of choice for your parishoners or do you fear lossing your authority over them.Obama is not the tyrant
in this case.Get a grip on reality!

      • vicki says:

These people are in the pews because they believe in the authority of the church as given it by Jesus, our Savior. They want to know the truth of what Jesus teaches us and they want to know the truth of what is happening in our country. They have free will because we are given that by God. The people hiding are the ones who want what they think the government will give them instead of living lives that do for others , and ourselves what our Lord teaches us to do. I have not seen true love for all others anywhere outside of the church. Even you are loved and your life valued.

    22. @undefined says:

God Bless him – the NEW BLACK ROBE REGIMENT has ARISEN – Folks who complain about this sort of talk, or who claim America is not a Christian Nation, or that our Founders were Deists or something, need to research the history of the Black Robe Regiment
