  • Chart of the Week: Obama Makes Defense the Lowest Budget Priority

President Obama’s budget proposes a sharp increase in entitlement spending and more outlays for domestic programs and interest on the national debt. Defense spending, meanwhile, takes a backseat to Obama’s other priorities.

The long-term outlook: Obama would make defense the lowest budget priority among the major categories of spending in the federal budget.

“The combination of the budget request and the Budget Control Act of 2011 would reduce the military’s personnel levels and force structure to the point that they could no longer protect U.S. vital interests and keep U.S. security commitments around the world,” Heritage’s Baker Spring wrote last week.

Heritage’s analysis of Obama’s budget reveals that by 2018, the United States would spend more on debt interest than protecting the country.

Obama has blamed defense spending for the federal deficit. But according to Spring’s research, that’s an incorrect assessment. Spring notes that defense spending is a relatively small share of the overall federal budget. And each year since 1992, it has actually represented a lower share of overall federal spending.

This is what the liberal progressives have wanted forever, a United States that is no better then the rest of the world militarily.. But the same Entitlement Nany State governments that are known for income redistribution and crushing regulation.. It's taken them roughly 100 years of trying (since FDR).

Europe and the rest of the world should start realizing that at some point they will have to support themeselves militarily because our debt will make it impossible for us to foot the bill anymore. Our Senior Citizens should also realize they are in the same situation, that any promise made by a government can and sometimes is undone by reckless government spending.. Look no further then "Greece" for cuts to retirement and pensions for an example of what government will do.

    2. Blair Franconia, NH says:

      Welcome back, Carter.

    3. Herbster says:

No surprise here. While China triples her defense budget, heads towards A 600 ship navy, etc., the present occupant of the White House is concerned more with phoning a "Student" who has problems with birth control not being paid for by taxpayers.

      • Margi says:

Yes, isn't that just so off the wall? This president does not deserve the title. The subject itself tested my credulity….whatever happened to being responsible? This man does not behave like a president, does not speak like a president should; I change channels when I see him on tv. Most people I know can't stand him. I think he is getting ready to do something to be able to be there for another 4 yrs. I do not trust him.

    4. Fatunsassy says:

Obama is such a "Two-Faced" liar.
I don't think he knows the truth.
He wants to cut the military, and at the same time he expects them to cover his mistakes!

    5. TaterSalad says:

Wake up America before you lose your freedom. Remember this: Barack Hussein Obama was a mentor as a young man, studied under Frank Marshall Davis who was possibly his father. He was a communist. Everything that Barack Obama has and "still" wants to accomplish leads you to this conclusion in this very powerful video. This can NOT be disputed. The laws and agenda that are already in place with this government are indisputable. Don't let Obama's "smile" fool you. This is "for real" and the consequences are "for real".

I don't believe anything that Obama and his administration says, they are ALL LIARS!

    7. KJinAZ says:

Obama need more for his Obama stash, so he can hand it out to failing green businesses.

    8. Ron Stewart says:

Defence is why we have been a world power. Cut out the waste but keep us powerfull. It takes money to be powerful. We waste sso much money in other places. Its so ovious. Lets reduce everything and raise defence spending. Our defence technology is a big part of our survival.j

    9. Brian says:

We can't spend enough money on other countries infrastructure, foreign aid, and the like, all under the guise of our defense budget. But when it comes time to spend money on OUR people and OUR infrastructure, we're told no money exists and everything from road construction to entitlement programs are "waste" and "earmarks". How about we spend OUR money taking care of OURSELVES and only after we do that, we can spend money on foreign interests?

    10. Lloyd Scallan says:

WOW, what a surprise! Ask the question. When out tax dollars are taken from defense, where does they go. Of course to the intitlement system that translates into more welfare votes for Obama and the Dems. This is the plan America. Wake up before it's too late.

    11. Bobbie says:

Mr. President has to stop doing us any favors regarding our personal livelihoods and focus on his duty! Why would the President of America wait until now to put blame on his oath of office? Amongst many unethical acts, if he can't handle his own vowed duty without increasing his intentional level of sacrifices his incompetence and ignorance puts on the people, impeachment is necessary.

Insulting the human intelligence with unconstitutional government "domestic" programs that limits ones mind from taking on the natural instinct to provide for ones own by using ones abilities to think for oneself as America's government respected to govern in the past! hence, building self esteem! People are being cheated of their own dignity and human intelligence taken over by a government with a "controlling agenda" very familiar to immigrants from 3rd world leaderships…

    12. Wes Cornell says:

In a few short years we will be unable to defend ourselves.
But we will be able to drive 50 miles in our battery powered hupmobiles.
Maybe we could mount machine guns on our green machines.
Yeah, the Libyans put theirs in pickup trucks.
Look out Russia and China we're coming at ya !

    13. carolyn kirkland says:

ELECTIONS MATTER!!! We asked for an "empty suit" and we got one. We also got someone who is not committed to THIS country.

    14. Margi says:

Congress should be doing something about this "president". There are many more reasons to impeach him than there ever was for Clinton. I'm disgusted with the lot of them.

    15. Hick'ry says:

If America wakes up now, it's about 100 years too late. The "progressives" have been busily chiseling away at the underpinnings of freedom, and taking control of education, the media, the legal system, and now finance and medicine. It might take another 100 years to undo the damage.

    16. Guest says:

      (6) The President requested the promised $7,600,000,000 for weapons activities of the National Nuclear Security Administration in fiscal year 2012 but signed an appropriations Act for fiscal year 2012 that provided only $7,233,997,000, a substantial reduction to only the second year of the ten-year plan under section 1251 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 (Public Law 111-84; 123 Stat. 2549).

      (7) The President requested only $7,577,341,000 for weapons activities of the National Nuclear Security Administration in fiscal year 2013 while the President’s section 1251 plan promised $7,900,000,000.

      (8) The President’s section 1251 plan further promised to request $8,400,000,000 in fiscal year 2014, $8,700,000,000 in fiscal year 2015, $8,900,000,000 in fiscal year 2016, at least $8,900,000,000 in fiscal year 2017, at least $9,200,000,000 in fiscal year 2018, at least $9,400,000,000 in fiscal year 2019, at least $9,400,000,000 in fiscal year 2020, and at least $9,500,000,000 in fiscal year 2021.

      This chart is a lie!!!
