  • Morning Bell: Obama's Friends Win Big in Budget

You don’t need to log on to President Barack Obama’s Facebook page to find out who his friends are, and you don’t need to read tea leaves, gaze into a crystal ball, or consult a psychic to learn where his priorities lie. No, you only have to take a look at his 2013 budget, just released on Monday, to see what kind of company the president keeps and to what extent he will go to lend his pals a helping hand.

The folks seated at the president’s head table haven’t changed much in the past few years — the only difference is how much is being served up in the taxpayer-funded buffet. As in the past, the president has plenty of handouts for his big labor buddies. His budget delivers a fourth consecutive annual deficit exceeding $1 trillion — and that spending goes to yet another round of not-so-shovel-ready construction projects and government “investments” totaling $178 billion. Heritage’s Patrick Knudsen writes that the spending includes the president’s favored road, bridge, and school construction projects, but “then they go alarmingly beyond the usual ‘infrastructure’ arguments to fund teachers’ pay.” In other words, unions representing the construction site and the classroom win big.

Other winners in the president’s budget are those who fit into the Administration’s vision of a green economy that is propelled not by the market’s demand, but by Obama’s whim. The 2013 budget proposes to spend $310 million to make solar energy cost-competitive without subsidies by 2020, $290 million to expand R&D on energy efficient manufacturing techniques, and $421 million in fossil energy research and development. Heritage energy expert Nicolas Loris writes that the budget “rejects the notion of a market-based energy industry and wastes taxpayer dollars at a time when we desperately need to curtail out-of-control spending.” In other words, he says, the president’s blueprint is all wrong.

There’s no clearer example of just how wrong the president’s blueprint is than his decision to increase subsidies for electric vehicles like the $41,000 Chevy Volt while ending funding for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (DCOSP), which gives low-income children in the nation’s capital a chance to escape underperforming schools. The White House intends to increase taxpayer-funded subsidies for those who purchase new-technology vehicles to $10,000 per buyer, up from $7,500. Keep in mind that the average income of a Volt buyer is $175,000 per year. That means that middle-class taxpayers are helping the rich buy pricy, politically correct cars.

With his other hand, President Obama is taking from the poor. The DCOSP provides $8,000 vouchers to 1,600 low-income children in the District of Columbia, empowering them to attend a school that they choose. The program has been a stunning success — though it has drawn criticism from the president’s teachers union allies. If the president gets his way, those children will pay the price.

They won’t be the only ones in their generation, though, who will suffer under the president’s budget. From a big picture perspective, the president’s budget rises from $3.8 trillion to $5.8 trillion in 2022. Putting that into context, that means outlays above 22 percent of gross domestic product — more than twice the New Deal’s share of the economy in its peak years. In constant dollars, outlays are more than three times the peak of World War II. With all that spending, someone will have to pay for it. Whose names will be on the bill? Those under 30 — America’s debt-paying generation. Their entire lives will be dominated by paying down today’s mountains of debt. And some of them are waking up to that fact.

“It will be my generation, rather than the retiring baby boomers, that will be paying off the national debt through higher income taxes,” says Amanda Winkler, 24, a Master’s Student at American University. Shaun Rabenius, 26, is a part-time construction worker and student. He says, “I have never followed politics much, except for when I vote. But in looking at the last decade, the presidencies, and the debt they have accumulated, I am scared out of my mind.”

They’re right to be worried. With a Senate that hasn’t passed a budget in well over 1,000 days and a president who seems intent on spending more, not less, without addressing the country’s underlying budgetary crisis, future generations will soon find that the winners today will make them losers tomorrow.

buying votes and publicity with our money, again.

    2. Dale Dawson says:

Why can't the Administration cut whole programs, Obamacare and retirement plans as well as phasing back entitlement programs now? They are taking more control of our lives and are "spreading the wealth" to not only citizens but also giving free rides to Illegals! We are being overrun by the FCC, HHS, Homeland Security as well as many other agencies to charge us and stop us from our free will! We will not survive as an independent nation if we do not stop this administration, the Congress and the Judicary!

    3. Duncan Campbell says:

Remember the "Cloward/Piven Strategy of Economic terrorism"? Obama put this in place on his first day in office! Google that phrase. It will shock you! Now go check the amount of "We the people's national debt! Duncan

    4. toledofan says:

There is just no end in sight for stupidity in the White House. With all the spending, waste, fraud, and corruption in this administration, how can it be that there are still at least 48 % of the American people who think this guy is doing a good job, go figure?

      • Mark Philip says:

Unfortunately, the answer is simple; never underestimate stupid people in large numbers. Don't forget that there was a push in certain states like South Carolina to remove political affiliation designations from the ballot (meaning there would be no D or R next to someone's name), while the majority of the population supported and passed the legislation by state vote, the ACLU (All Criminals Love Us) threw a shit fit because, well, how would people who know nothing about the candidates and issues vote? Simple; by requiring people to LEARN about the things that matter you eliminate much of the political droneage and that is something the current administration is petrified of. God forbid, sorry, can't say "God" any more and politically correct, people actually inform themselves and not just follow the order of the hand out. NObama, thank you.

      • Clearhead says:

Take a look at the picture at the top of this article. Probably hundreds of adoring, single digit I.Q. zombies just swooning and reveling in their vacuous mental state. It's "crowd" or rather "MOB" psychology, Toledofan. These people, and others like them, are social lemmings who are following this clown right over the edge of the cliff as we speak. Adolph Hitler had a similar following last century. You ask, "…how can it be….? Yes !! HOW CAN IT BE? God has endowed us with eyes to see, ears to hear, and minds to think and reason. It is tragic that we refuse to use these assets.

      • liz says:

The people that love our president are those who want all the freebe's they will give them, that is the problem people want more and more never satisfied and could care less if others have to pay for it. We need to vote out this administration before he declares himself king and stops fair voting all over the country, there will be those that will love that. They want to be taken care of

      • It is not stupidity… it is design!

Look at the Abortion flap with the Church. The Pres. claims to have compromised… by requiring the insurance companies to pick up the expense. He is not empowered to do either!

    5. Griz says:

How do we as average citizens stop this? Can it be stopped? Will we even be able to make it to 2013?

    6. Obama_epic_fail says:

The Republicans are doing a very poor job in DC of getting this message out. Take off the gloves for Gods sake and expose these lies. Stop being afraid of Obama and his ilk. The only ones you will offend are the liberals who believe his lies. Bohner, GROW a spine!

    7. Ken Jarvis says:

Thank you – Yes, the country will win when the GOP join Obama to get THINGS DONE.
All of us should work With the Prez, instead of Spinning ever thing he does as bad.
Surely, the HF has enough $$$, they should be able to afford to print the TRUTH.
But, guess their Greed is to strong.

I will never again cast a vote that gives Republicans or Democrats control of the WH, Senate and the House of Representatives. I saw what happened when Bush had control and didn't like it and I was horrified when Obama had control. Paralysis in Washington is the only way to protect this country from the political predators.

      • sdfultz says:

Jarvis, looks like some just don't get it.

    8. Ihatelibs says:

If everyone refuses to pay taxes, Barry and his goons get nothing.

    9. Jeff, Illinois says:

I guess what it means to be a Republican, is to find fault with every possible effort by the other administration! Wouldn't it be better, for America, to find a way to support the president . . give him his due . . given that more than half the population saw him and sees him as a credible leader. Then when it's the GOP's time they get their due . . even if they put someone like George Bush in that position.

      • David S says:

Citizens of North Korea support their "dear leader" and look how well that is working out for them. "Give his due", you say. I say he is past due to be out of office.

        • Jeff, Illinois says:

I'm afraid you are a very poor judge of character and competence by making such an absurd comparison.

      • GDRN says:

No Jeff, it is the Republican intent to find fault with the faulty. Changing this country from the land of freedom and liberty to one of oppression and control at every level of your life is faulty and something that even you will not like when it smacks you between the eyes after it is too late to do anything about it. It is not more than half of the population of this country that sees him as a credible leader, but it is nearly half of the population that is riding the gravy train down easy street using the tax dollars of us who work for a living. That is what we all should be doing Jeff, working for a living, unless you are disabled beyond ability. You do work for your living don't you? If you do, I don't know how you can support the foolishness of the Democrat party unless you actually are a Democrat operative who has already sold his soul to the party.

    10. Forhonesty says:

I have a brother in the Ahlzheimer's unit at a Florida facility. He entered this facility November 5 of 2010. His medical caregivers from April of 2010 are still filing medicare claims in excess of 5,000.00 for lab work. I have to wonder who owns the lab filing the claims? I am alerting medicare fraud about these very late claims. If fraud was eliminated in medicare the taxpayer would save billions. Where is the government watchdogs, like SEC employees and watching porn?

      • Mark Fey says:

It is probably Rick Scott that is involved in illegal gains from medicare fraud in Florida.
The people of Florida have a known medical defrauder as Governor. Go figure.

And file that notice of fraud!!

        • Jeanne Stotler says:

I got a notic of payment made today fom a Dr. I haven't seen in over 5 years, I called Medicare, their answer was to cal the Dr. and see if it was a mistake, Why didn't they look into it?? No I had to and of course they say it was an error. I just don't buy it, My file should not ven be active.

    11. Larry says:

When are we ever going to stop playing footsies with these libs who intend on taking us down. It's time to stop the mamby pamby and call them what they are. If your main interest is not scaring the independents away, maybe try calling the libs out and call the president as what he is instead, perhaps you'll actually attract more independents who actually care about the direction of the country.

    12. popularesmanducaresuos says:

This all ties in with the Comrade-in-Chief's radical new National Defense plan. Turn our country into such an economic wreck that no one would WANT to bother us.

    13. diane says:

The Republicans should just get with the President to "get things done"? Those "things" that will increase our deficit to the point where our grandchildren won't be able to pay it off? Get "things" done when there is a fundamental difference in the role and scope of the federal government? Get "things" done just like the Democrats give up all they believe in to come alongside a Republican president. Don't get me wrong. I don't believe the Republicans have done everything they can do to stand up for what they supposedly believe in. My hope is that someone will finally see that the size of our federal government is out of control and we can no longer afford the programs we have. And please, can someone have the courage to start to look at all the waste? Maybe then we can truly take care of those that really need the help and not continue to throw money down the hole of government programs. If we care about people the way claim to, then let's spend our money wisely the way a good steward should.

      • liz says:

Republicans can do nothing, they don't have the senate and as long as palosi and reid are in charge we will become a comunist state

    14. Jeanne Stotler says:

iF ALL NEWSPAPERS published the list of big donars and the list of BIG recipiants of goverment money than a lot of people would know what is going on in D.C., it's repaying certain organizations for their donations to BHO's re-election fund. I recently saw on from 2008, Sure shows elections are not fair.

    15. Carlene Meyer says:

I don't believe the president ever wanted his budget to be passed. I think he wrote something outrageous so it won't be accepted and it lengthens the time for them to have no budget accountability.

On the subject of religious violations in his support of free contraceptives, I think he wants to change the focus of his arguments from abortion to contraception and create the impression conservatives want to outlaw it. When will he start the "bedroom police" squad so he can make sure they are being used? He has invaded every other aspect of our lives, why not that too?

      He needs to

    16. comeuppance says:

To those of you who want the GOP to support Obama – why do you think Repuplicans were voted in with such big numbers??? We have a country and its rule of law to support and defend. But should everyone who supports Obama like to give him more tax dollars to spend "in our best interests" then I say send home all those who "sit'" in the Senate and House, take all those salaries and the offices they support and hand them to Obama and let him reign as king – as he thinks he is. Would the Obama lovers be happy then? Is that the kind of rule they want?

    17. David says:

The only wrinkle in this plan is that this budget like ALL of his other budgets will be shot down. So it's really just smoke and mirrors. Much like his campaign in '08.

    18. liz says:

He laughs at us stupids all the way to the white house, he is accomplishing all that he wants to accomplish because most people don't do there home work

      • GDRN says:

Show me someone who after three plus years is still standing around with the hands out expecting Obama to help him while still telling us to "give him a chance", and I will show you a hoplessly stupid being. The sad thing is that such people vote, and that is what is truely frightening. It is the stupid ones, who prefer to live in their ignorance, who put Obama where he is and want to keep him there, that are to be feared, because they are the ones who will bring this country down. Obama can't destroy us without the help of the "useful idiots". That term, by the way, was used many years ago by one Joseph Stalin while using people to solidify his power in the old USSR, and shortly before the bloodbath that killed millions and sent hugh numbers to the gulags in Siberia to be readjusted. Even then, some of those "useful idiots" never connected the dots.

    19. Part 2.
The Washington Times reported on January 14 that Obama won "60 percent of his proposed cuts" and also managed "to get Congress to ax several programs that had bedeviled President George W. Bush for years."
      source: http://mediamatters.org/research/201001270003

True, Republicans took back the House during the 2010 midterm elections on those claims, but the claims were made up completely of false statements about stimulus failure and inaction from the president. All the while, these same Republicans were quietly applying for stimulus funds for their home districts (here’s looking at you, Rep. Michele Bachmann). No hypocrisy there, right?

And, as a final note, when the baby boomers die, and that will be soon – thankfully, we will have significantly less debt to deal with because the cost to take care of the people that have ruined our way of life with their greed, are not going to be using our resources any more.

      • duh says:

Oh my god. THANK YOU! Not only will the BB's take that debt with them, they'll be taking a LOT of the small-minded ignorance we see so often these days with them as well.

        • gregio says:

OMG, apparently you don't understand how the Fed works, the money we are borrowing from China doesn't get written off because one generation dies off. That debt will have to be serviced and rolled over for YOU and the next batch of suckers to wrestle with. You need to read some of the interesting stories about Greece and how they are cutting EVERYONES salaries by 25%-50% so they can service their debt and their future doesn't look good. That is where YOUR generation will be in 20years if you don't start asking why we are wasting so much now.

      • Jeanne Stotler says:

How ignorant are you,? Those of us who are in our 70's and 80's grew up during 1st a depression, where we did survive on what we had and WE WORKED, the came WWII, rationing, a lot of us went off to war, either WWII , Korea or Viet Nam, the boys came home and most WORKED, Some do go to school but then to WORK, we didn't sit with our hands out , we worked hard to buy our house and WE PAYED INTO SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE, if these were privately funded org. and they did what the Gov't has done, they'dbe in JAIL, besides we could have lived off the interest if handled properly.

      • GDRN says:

And who was it that said' "Republicans just want people to die and die quickly"? Thats right it was Democrat Alan Grayson of Florida. Not one word from the press over that sad attempt to villify Republicans. Some of us don't buy into your foolishness and stupidity that easily, but it does seem due to your own words, that you Democrat operatives are really the ones who would like to see a lot of people die, and soon. Could that be the reason for the death panels as part of Obamacare?

    20. Part1A.
Ramped-up fraud-fighting efforts led to a 50% increase from 2009 to 2011 in judgments and settlements of payments fraudulently obtained from Medicare and Medicaid, according to the Justice Department and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

On the presidents accomplishments, to date, conservatives and progressives alike do seem to be in agreement on one aspect of the Obama presidency: one hundred days into office and a lot has been done.

    21. Part 1
I've posted a few facts that might shed some truth on what I've read above. I've used republican leaning, democratic leaning, and independent news sources, so that you will be unable to claim bias on my part. Hopefully enough of us will remember who put us in the situation we're in when we vote… it's obvious you commenters have either forgotten or have been unable to grasp the storyline… enjoy!

The federal government recovered $4.1 billion in fraudulent healthcare payments in fiscal 2011, the largest amount ever collected in a single year, federal officials announced Tuesday.

      • The 2007-2008 "Bush Budgets" were voted in by Obama and the Democrat majority Congress. It's not just a 'Bush mess', it's a 'blame Bush' mess that the Dems authored!

    22. lizaz says:

Don't listen to what he SAYS, watch what he DOES !! If he is reelected, all these promises will go away….he won't need votes then!!!

    23. Michael A. Gabel says:

      Dear Amanda Winkler,

You are right to be scared out of your mind. In addition to our federal government spending more money than it could ever reasonably tax to pay back, it has far overreached into our lives as free Americans.

You should know that I, a CPA and family man in NJ, and many Americans understand that our liberty and our nation's survival is at stake. We are doing what we can, while raising our families and tending to our careers, to be active in the political world, to elect conservative leaders.

Please join us and please inform your loved ones and friends, as we steer our country back to its beautiful founding principles of individual liberty, self-reliance, representative and limited government, private property rights and personal responsibility.

    24. Tom Howe says:

"…the largest amount ever collected in a single year…" Hmm… I wonder how much more was spent that year than any single year???

    25. Alcon says:

Impeachment is the only thing that can save our country. This president must be stopped before he totally destroys our freedoms and way of life. We can not risk re-election he must be held accountable for violations of the constitution now!

      • GDRN says:

If we did not have so many brain dead individuals who decided to keep the Democrats in control of the Senate, then impeachment probably would have been accomplished by now along with repeal of Obamacare. However, Obama's useful idiots again voted to keep their gravy train rolling at the expense of the tax payer. Add to that the voter fraud by groups like ACORN – they are not gone, only the name – and in states where Democrats have prevented laws requiring positive ID in order to vote, and Obama's chances for reelection are pretty good inspite of his undefensible record of corruption and job destruction and fiscal abuse. We must control the House and the Senate or we are finished.

    26. Lloyd Scallan says:

Do we all not realize this is Obama, from day one. Why should anyone be surprised that he is doing exactly what he said he would do when he used the word "transform"? The left understood. Why the majorty of American did not? Because most Americans cannot fully accept the fact that any president of this nation would cause it's collapse. Well it's happening, thanks to all of those that felt good about voting for a black man, instead of looking past his race to understand his ideology and agenda.

      • Jeanne Stotler says:

I didn't drink te Kool Aid, and from the first time I heard him I knew what he was, others believed his lies and sadly there are some out there who will vote for him again and thee are those who will support and aboet illegal ways to get him in. It's vitally important that we ALL stand up for varification of the right to vote and make sure that all the fraud is supressed, what's more the ones initiating it be jailed. NOW IS THE TIME FOT THE 2ND REVOLUTION. we ca do it without firing a shot. Proud decendent of the first Revolutionist

    27. Ray says:

      Fed Budget Vs, Household Budget

household income of $55,000 per year
      spending $96,500— <$41,500 more than they made>
That means they’re spending 175% of their annual income!
In 2011 they’d add $41,500 of debt to their current credit card debt of $366,000!

Who in their right mind thinks this family can spend itself out of debt. Here we are using thousands. The govt spends trillions. Add 7 zeroes to the figures and see where the govt is and where they are going.

The federal government will take in $2.173 trillion in 2011. That’s their income, and it sounds pretty good. Until, that is, you factor in that the federal government will spend $3.818 trillion during the year. So, just like many families, the government’s outgo exceeds their income—to the tune of $1.645 trillion in overspending. That’s called the deficit. Altogether, the government about $16 trillion in debt.

    28. KC-NM says:

Obumers actions continue to be CYA type actions. His budget is a joke. The Senate and folks like Ried and Pelosi have destroyed this country. As I stated a few days ago, we must flood the Obama Truth sites with the real truth and then be prepared to tackle 1st amendment rights. My bet is that these "truth" sites of Obama's campaign will not publish what is sent by conservative America.

    29. JOE says:

Guess what people! All this and his approval is going up. REPUBLICAN'S ARE THE BLAME. They have no courage. They have stood by and watched the left do this to us for decades. And they still are. Republican's don't know how to fight these people so they cave in to them. If they made him defend his record and unconstitutional MANDATES, he woud be lost. THEY WON'T DO IT,AND NEVER HAVE. What are they afraid of????

      • gregio says:

Dear Joe, the "republicans" conservative Americans don;t run our colleges and schools. They are 85-90% democrat leftist liberal socialists. You can blame republicans forever but their only "agenda" is to get our lawmakers to follow the constitution not use taxpayer funds for slush funds for getting votes. The Media and the popular leadership are mostly liberal so our ship of state has plenty of pirates aboard and they have already got most of the conservative crew locked up. If the ship withstands this latest blackbeard it will be a miracle.

    30. allen says:

We should have a list when anybody is Elected to Congress. Thier total worth, after leaving it should be published what that person made while working for the People ,anything over thier salary should be returned and a hearing how the money was made. If insider trading, etc. could be Jail time. Ahhh,What the Hell nothing is going to be done. Look at the Rep. Speaker Denny H. slipped away nothing ever done, But one thing these people don't last to long which is due process. At least the Good Lord can have the Last Laugh.

    31. Ron W. Smith says:

Mike Brownfield's take on a few things could be debated, but for now let's just focus on what was left completely out.
Any discussion that involves spending by the U.S. Government and our growing National Debt requires attention to the biggest driver of the debt and deficit: spending on National Security. How can it be overlooked when the annual expenditure on National Defense, Homeland Security, Foreign Aid Designed to Gain the Cooperation of Other Countries, Nation Building, and Veterans Affairs exceeds the total spent by the rest of the world COMBINED every year? It's an annual $1 trillion plus that almost matches the annual $1 trillion plus deficit! And we wonder where the National Debt came from?
Those who argue for a strong National Defense have no opposition at all from me. It's very important. However, maintaining more than 700 military installations around the world, on land and at sea, is far more than National Defense. It's an extravagance left over from earlier flush times in America and is the result of a series of Foreign Policy decisions that have made us the world's Hegemon or, as I often say, the world's SuperPower on Call. We've not been been dragged kicking and screaming into that role. We've chosen it, and it has made us an international target, led us into war after war, intervention after intervention.
Any who are hawkish on the matter of American power have a right to that position. They don't, though, have a right to ignore the consequences which every day burden the American economy to the point where domestic needs are neglected in favor of debt service and the care, feeding, and exercising of our enormous military/industrial complex. Without the projection of our power into every region on earth, without the constant and costly need for homeland security against enemies whose backyards have American presence, without the constant intervening and war, without the ever-growing number of veterans in need of services through the Veterans Administration, and without those huge outlays in foreign aid meant to secure cooperation so necessary in keeping open supply lanes and all those military installations–why, we'd be like so many other countries where domestic needs are actually and always met and the money saved on debt service (now $300 billion a year here) put to good use.
Are there other countries which have Nation Building expenses like ours in their budgets? Or Homeland Security expenses like ours? Or . . ..
We have chosen the path to our $15 trillion National Debt, and its time to begin eliminating that debt in response to the leaner times that have been upon us for almost a decade. It's time to begin a national discussion and debate of our Foreign Policy open for all to hear, see, and participate in. The flush times that made SuperPower on Call possible are behind us. It's time to start acting like they are.

      • Jeanne Stotler says:

There are a lot of gov't agencies that can be pared down or closed, TSA is a joke, they pull 80 Yo's out (Me), and check the depends of a wheel chair bound woman, pat down a 4 Yo, give me a break,, I don't care if it's profiling or not, was the guy in Yemen, Pakistan etc several times recently, was he raised in those countries or have ties, is he a member of the Mosque that preach hatred?? let's get real and look at the past and prevent another 9/11, Let's not put us in nucleur deficinticy so our enemies will know they are free to attack us.

    32. Richwood7 says:

And Republican reward the aristocracy who already have seen their income and assets skyrocket. Republican have already banished freedom of religion and look more like Iraq imposing a religious tryanny. So what is new?

    33. Robert says:

It is Obama's own variation on treason. He could only want to destroy this fine country as I can imagine no other motivation for such reckless and useless spending.

So far it seems that the character of the man, who fails to uphold, support, and defend this Country's Constitution and forever sees its bindings as a major obstacle to him personally, is well displayed in the symptoms of his persuits. If anyone would consider facts that are available and known about this man's origins, admissions and sympathies; then it becomes clearly obvious to the most casual observer what this man is attempting to create. A crippling of the United States America. A Nation whom will soon be unable to defend itself from any enemy, foreign or domestic, because of its tremendous burden of dept and disfunction. America is being dessolated from within by a man of a different belief system than what is Patriotic. Than what is American. It is a reproach on all of the Citizenry, their liberties and freedoms.
