  • VIDEO: The Real Legacy of Margaret Thatcher, Britain's Iron Lady

As moviegoers head to theaters this weekend, many will want to compare the person they saw on screen to the real woman. As we explained this week, there is no resource better than the Iron Lady’s own words. Our new video attempts to shine a spotlight on her important legacy—one that continues to inspire.

Like President Ronald Reagan, her political soulmate, she came to power at a desperate time in her country’s history, when real leadership and bold ideas were most needed. And by applying conservative principles to the challenges she faced, she was able to achieve real and lasting success. Then, as today, she faced an extraordinary set of challenges and a chorus of voices saying her country’s best days were behind it. Thatcher’s successes are a comforting reminder of the power of a bold, conservative vision at work.

Margaret Thatcher is one of the greatest champions of freedom of the 20th century.

    2. John Norkus says:

Don't think I'll be seeing Meyl Streep's portrayal of the Iron Lady. I prefer the real thing. Great wisdom for our time.

    3. buck says:

I loved and respected this great lady just as I loved and respected Ronald Reagan . If all the worlds leaders were as great and as astute as these two we would actually have a peacefull , and economicaly stable world .

    4. Carl Hogan says:

The economic travesty that Great Britain and much of the rest of Western Europe has become since Mrs.Thatcher's time in public office only serves to prove that she was right – Socialism fails everywhere it is tried because sooner or later, you run out of other people's money. And the real tragedy for America is that we have put an administration into power that is leading us at lightening pace down the same road. I long for the days when true conservatives like Ronald Reagan & Margaret Thatcher could stand before a microphone and clearly articulate conservativism. Unless we groom leaders to do the same today, we are lost as a nation.

      Thank you for posting this!

    6. Bobbie says:

      "principle, not politics!"
the world is crumbling because of it's absence of civilly principled leadership. the pompous thugs are in the way of the good of humanity!!! Lady Thatcher, bless her heart! An inspiration of strength and principle to women of today…

no man will rule over another. no government will rule over man's self governance…

    7. Commenting on the Heritage tweet: “Margaret Thatcher was greater in person than Meryl Streep could EVER portray.”

Look — I think Meryl Streep would fully agree that the greatest actor in the world, working on stage or film, could never surpass the real the human they're playing. Even the greatest painters never thought their creations surpassed nature itself.

Don’t like the film because you feel it didn’t do justice to MT? Go after the producers (and to a lesser extent, the writers) for the film, but why go after an actress who’s job it is to say the damn lines they give her, and say them believably. That’s her job. If you don’t like the dramatized character, go after the writer and producers. Leave the actress out of it.

    8. The recent release of "Iron Lady" is another example of Hollywood's political bias. It is unfortunate that Meryl Streep agreed to play this role.

    9. winston says:

I won't be seeing the movie.

    10. Dave L says:

I won't support anything MS does.

    11. Anne says:

      Nor will I ……..Anne

    12. David says:

I grew up in Liverpool England in a poverty stricken area. My family and relatives were true blue Labor party socialists. Even at a young age I couldn't wait to escape from that mind numbing mentality. I have lived and succeed in business in 4 different country's with large ups and downs, but Ive never lost the zeal for a positive life, the love of freedom or a steadfast self reliance and that's what great conservatives have always preached. When Margaret Thatcher became the PM in the UK I celebrated, she did not disappoint me and single handily dragged the UK up by it's boot straps. The double combo of conservatives like Ronald Reagan & Margaret Thatcher was a great thing for the whole world both have my undying gratitude, admiration and love. Meanwhile the rot and stench of socialism is alive and well in a decaying western world, we desperately need the likes of Regan and Thatcher again, one person can save a nation and the world or destroy it. We must fight these bloody minded soul destroying socialist with all of our might that what Ronald Reagan & Margaret Thatcher did for us.

    13. David G Emmett says:

Tell the miners, steel workers and the other industries that she lied to when she promised to invest and keep the going.

Now we buy coal from Poland, Steel owned by India and numerous industries lost.

She sold all of our playing fields and yet we are staging the Olympics. Where are all of our future athletes coming from.

Remember also 15% bank rates and above.

    14. Penny says:

Baroness Lady Thatcher is one of the greatest leaders in the history of the world. The movie was just an example of Hollywood's left wing bias and ignorance towards history proper. She had a great relationship with the United States of America and for that I am very honored and grateful. Her stand for the human rights and freedoms of the people of her country rather than her predecessor's treatment of the UK people as subjects/servants of Socialism make her a hero of Democracy and democratic societies around the world. She was a tough woman and a formidable force….and she rocked! I doubt any "actress" could possibly portray her essence. They need to take the movie down!

    15. Samatha says:

      I love her
