  • Saving Millions of Lives: Time to Prepare for an EMP Now

Berman’s piece is a welcome contribution to the debate about the U.S. vulnerability to EMP. This ongoing debate has recently received increased attention following the presidential GOP debate hosted by The Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute in November.

The United States remains unprotected from an EMP effect, a high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the rapid acceleration of charged particles. An EMP would disable all electric devices within its line of sight, including electric grids, computers, cell phones, and means of transportation.

The congressionally mandated EMP Commission Report stated that EMP “has the capability to produce significant damage to critical infrastructures and thus to the very fabric of US society, as well as to the ability of the United States and Western nations to project influence and military power.”

An EMP could be created by detonating a nuclear weapon at a high altitude and would send the United States back to the 19th century. A number of U.S. adversaries or potential adversaries—including Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran—have already acquired or are trying to acquire weapons that would cause an EMP.

Short- and long-range ballistic missiles are the best means of delivery for this kind of attack. That is why the United States must continue to build up its missile defenses. The system would ideally be composed of Aegis ballistic missile capable ships; Aegis Ashore, the land-based ballistic missile component; and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle capabilities. These would offer a degree of protection against such an attack.

Unfortunately, the Obama Administration has curtailed U.S. missile defense development and killed some of the most promising missile defense programs.

An EMP, however, can be created by non-nuclear weapons (radio-frequency weapons) or geomagnetic storms (often called space weather). To protect the nation’s infrastructure against these threats, the public and private sectors can and should harden vital infrastructure to make it more resilient and resistant to EMP. The U.S. should also develop a national plan to respond to EMP emergencies. This would involve educating federal, state, and local officials along with the public about the risks and response options.

Such steps could save millions of lives. There is no time to spare.

"Unfortunately, the Obama Administration … [is completely hostile to America's defense interests]"

Let's just hope we can survive another year naked as a jaybird on this one.

The current Administration is so hopelessly behind on defense, the whole notion of funding something *proactively* is a lot closer to science fiction than an EMP strike itself. Just do a little research on the utter failure of Obama's White House to address cyber-security. Everything's a political campaign funding issue to them — if there's no funds involved, there's no focus.

    3. Jane Wegener says:

I find it terrifying that the current administration is ignoring this. An EMT attack would be the first thing on the agenda of any terrorist including IRAN. Most people do not conceive of the destruction to society here in America that would occur. Millions would die as our economy and way of life would stop instantly. Imagine no electricity, no means of communication eventurally not access to food water or gas. THINK ABOUT AMERICA. This threat IS real and could happen. The time is NOW to develop means to protect ourselves. Why has Obama curtailled missle defense?

Read the book " One Second After " – fiction, but very scary…

    5. chort says:

Hysterical much? Is there any threat, no matter how remote the possibility, that DOES NOT warrant spending hundreds of billions of dollars immediately? Do a real risk analysis and get back to us.

It's this type of attitude that got us a runaway DHS with a secretary who says "threats are threat" without any apparently weighting for probability or magnitude.

    6. WHICH WAY says:

THIS IS BEYOND COMPREHENSION,A SUICIDE STORY SINCE MOST OF THE WORLD IS DEPENDANT ON THE SAME TECHNOLOGY. SO DO WE ALL GO DOWN TOGETHER?IF SO THE USA IS THE BEST ARMED NATION IN THE WORLD WITH A GUN IN EVERY CLOSET FOR DEFENSE OF OUR FAMILIES. I HOPE SOMEONE IS THINKING ABOUT HOW TO "HARDEN" OUR FACILITIES AND HOW TO PAY FOR IT.

    7. Red Baker says:

We need some ideas on how to protect our homes, cars, computers, businesses, etc. Don't just wait on our genius government.

    8. kenwestisright.com says:

Let us not forget the planes dropping out of the skies as well as destruction of defence capabilities.

    9. Tea Bagger says:

So, does this mean the budget deficit doesn't matter any more?

    10. America WILL fall becaue it continues to vote in the same people who are bringing it to its knees. Vote Ron Paul……REAL CHANGE

      • This Guy says:

Scott, You are Correct, however, Ron Paul, Sadly, Is against Israel. He has the best constitutional voting record and very much so wants us to CHANGE BACK, however, he is Against Israel. That is not acceptable. We are to Stand with God's People.

    11. Bobbie says:

this is an area that effects the general welfare of the country! why is the government neglecting their constitutional duty while spending time and money mandating seat belts and endorsing electric cars just to add to the grid, etc? Too unconstitutionally busy deciphering what's "fair" for everyone's lifestyle according to their skin color, creed and culture? How condescending the president wouldn't see people able to figure out what's fair between people as we've done before his over ruling existence and as we know it is NOT HIS ROLE! Get him and all unconstitutional agencies out of our personal lives, please! Hold him to his constitutional duties!

    12. Homer N. Jethro says:

EMP is a real danger but please be advised there is a much greater probability of solar activity causing it than human warfare. When it happened in the 1800's it melted telegraph lines. The reason it was so limited in its scope was because there was so little electrical usage in the day. Today it will be Armageddon with a small "a."

The best solution for the "group" is to have small nuclear generation plants in each town across the country of the same basic design used by the Navy (remember, these units have been used over 50 years and seem quite reliable and safe). The real "small" grid application.

The best solution for the individual is to know how much energy one needs and what electrical equip one must have. Buy it, shield it, and have a plan to work with the neighbors. The damage can be very extensive and take quite a while to repair but it isn't irreparable.

    13. Don Ruane says:

Anyone who thinks that this is done out of stupidity is insane. The destruction of the American Way of Life is well planned and very well executed.

Thank you all for our great comments! I invite you to visit the EMP report at http://www.empreport.com with continued up to date articles, publications, reports, and related mitigation efforts and congressional meetings. We are currently working side by side with the top experts in EMP/HEMP threat mitigation technology and products and are also pushing for the true awareness of our frightening vulnerability and national security threat that we facing as an overall nation. Politics aside, it is our duty to keep our people and our children protected in the present and in the future as we exponentially become more and more dependent on electronic, computerized, and satellite run technology in everyday life. We also invite you to visit our website at http://www.hardenedstructuresofamerica.com for more information on EMP mitigation efforts. Stay informed and stay PREPARED.

No matter what your opinion and what your thoughts are, I think that you should go to EMPact Radio to listen to former Chairman Pete Hoekstra of the HPSCI talk about EMP's and other global threats this Wednesday the 11th. It should be an extremely informative and interesting show to listen to; here's the link: http://empactradio.org/pvp/episode83-congressman-
