  • Morning Bell: The Last Incarnation of Barack Obama

If there was any doubt where President Barack Obama’s ideological heart lies, yesterday he let it be known loud and clear in a wide-ranging speech in Osawatomie, Kansas. President Obama is at his core a dyed-in-the-wool progressive who sees the federal government as the answer to all of America’s problems. And he is charging full steam ahead on this far-left course toward Election Day 2012, despite the total failure of his big-government policies and an American people who have flatly rejected the message he is trying to sell.

True to form, President Obama yesterday did what he does best: He delivered a flowery speech and flexed his rhetorical muscles. It’s a talent that won him the presidency, but unfortunately it hasn’t won the future for the American people. And that’s because the President’s underlying philosophy is terribly flawed. After three years of a massive expansion of government, the enactment of Obamacare, hundreds of billions of dollars in failed stimulus spending, government ownership of General Motors, a Big Labor/pro-unionization onslaught, threats of even higher taxation, the promulgation of more unnecessary regulations, and a total failure to confront the entitlement challenge, the verdict is in on President Obama’s record and the soundness of his statist, progressive philosophy. Deficits are soaring, the economy is stagnant, 13.3 million Americans are out of work, and job growth is flat. Not surprisingly, the President’s speech did not touch on those facts.

Instead of confronting the reality of America under his watch, President Obama hearkened back to the days of Bull Moose progressive Theodore Roosevelt, citing him as his model of good governance, quoting his 1910 “New Nationalism” speech and calling for “fairness” in America–along with more infrastructure spending, more federal education programs, more regulations, and higher taxation on job creators to redistribute wealth and pay for his big government programs. And in order to raise the temperature of his rhetoric–and inflame the passions of his audience–the President fell back to his class warfare ways, demonizing the haves in order to win over the have-nots while painting a picture of an America where “unfairness” reigns and opportunity cannot be found.

Matthew Spalding, vice president of The Heritage Foundation’s B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics, explains why President Obama’s reliance on class warfare and his perverted view of “fairness” is so contrary to what America is really about:

There are no class distinctions in America. That’s why Steve Jobs could start an adopted child in a broken home, start Apple in a garage and become a billionaire eight times over. The real distinction here is caused by the rise of a new governing class of experts, bureaucrats and political elites who insist on ruling us to enforce “fairness” rather than letting us govern ourselves under the rule of law.

Indeed, the new fairness inevitably leads to bureaucratic favoritism, inequalities based on special interests and undue political influence. The real class warfare, as Paul Ryan argued in his recent speech at The Heritage Foundation, is caused by “a class of governing elites, exploiting the politics of division to pick winners and losers in our economy and determine our destinies for us.”

Ironically, the President’s conception of America–that it is a land of no opportunity–stands in stark contrast to his own personal story, which he even trumpeted in his speech. Barack Obama came from meager beginnings and now sits in the Oval Office. There are countless stories of other Americans who have risen and found success on their own merit in this fertile land. But speaking to America’s rugged individualism and the notion of achieving success without the helping hand of the government would not serve President Obama’s progressive agenda. In his world, the government is the giver of all things, the defender of the middle class, and the architect of prosperity. Likewise, success is not something to be championed but to be demagogued in the name of the expansion of the state.

Over the past three years, we have seen the President articulate many ideas and cloak himself in many different philosophies. Of late, he has even called himself a tax-cutter and posed as a deficit hawk, all while calling for massive amounts of new spending. But with yesterday’s speech, he has emerged in his truest incarnation–a hard-line progressive to the core. The speech fits perfectly with reports that the Obama 2012 campaign has come to the realization that it will lose white blue-collar voters by large margins and is concentrating instead on cobbling together a coalition of culture elites and racial minorities. The abandonment of the middle class–or, rather, the fact that the middle class has abandoned him–puts in context this latest incarnation of the President as he prepares to run next year.

This is not the way to lead America to prosperity, to stand the economy on its feet, or to put the millions of unemployed Americans back to work. Rather than make government bigger and more intrusive, now is the time to make it smaller and more responsible so that entrepreneurs can achieve what Washington cannot manufacture: new jobs, new ideas, and a better America for future generations. But that America is quite different from the one President Obama envisions.

    1. Melissa says:

As if we needed this speech to "out" the President. He is a disgrace to his country. Go Newt!

    2. Carol says:

Obamas fairwell wave as he leaves office.

      • Stephen says:

Can someone wise me up. Time after time after time I read from a myriad of reporters and pundits of the rejection by the American people of Mr. Obama's policies, yet the progressive, nearly socialist destroyer appears likely to be re-elected. Where are all these people. There seems to be no republican contender. What am I missing.

    3. Brian says:

"That's why Steve Jobs could start an adopted child in a broken home, start Apple in a garage and become a billionaire eight times over." And Steve Jobs started Apple during the Reagan/Clinton years. So my idea…go back to the tax rates of those times!!!!

    4. Amazing. They know no bounds or limitations

      • redhawk says:

Ceratily have NO knowledge of Economics… but tyhen Empty suits have NO knowledge about anything but Socialistic Entitlements…

    5. JWS says:

The reason why President Obama gets away with all his rhetoric is because we have a largely government educate populous that has been indoctrinated to believe that one part of the citizens owe them a living. With close to 50 percent of the supposedly tax paying population not paying any Federal Income Tax, is it a wonder that that they like the receiving without having to contribute.
Have you ever noticed that the President never looks at the camera during a speech but only moves his head from one teleprompter to the other? I was taught as a kid to look in to the eyes of the person you are talking to but he seems to avoid that at all cost. He can't be trusted but some on the otherside of the political spctrum are no better.

    6. Stepehen Scheu says:

      Lets hope so…..

    7. weedpuller says:

Didn't work in the 1930's either.

    8. Victoria DeLacy says:

Obama must think he can fool midwestern America – he has a rude awakening on the way. They have seen the economy tankl under his administration's unwise policies. I lived in red state Kansas for a dozen years before moving out here in early 1984 and the city of Osawatomie is where they have their big psychiatric hospital – perfect place for Obama to give his speech…he should have stayed there!

    9. MJF in CT says:

Now that Mr. Obama has uncloaked himself, we should defy the orders from the top of the Republican Party and totally annihilate any chance of Mr. Obama's re-election. All the gloves should come off and we should be playing this angle to the American public right up until election day, 2012.

      • FalconFlight says:

Indeed my friend because I do not see anywhere within the establishment GOP (Loyalists) an once of conviction, or defense of our heritage, and most of all our Constitution. How easily the nation surrenders its birthright. We won't let them…

    10. John Galt says:

This article is spot on. I listened to Obama's speech and could not believe the things he said out loud. It was like listening to Hugo Chavez.

      • Mike says:

Obama has great role models doesn't he: Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Che, Vladamir Lenin, Soros. If Obama wins a second term and goes far enough with his agenda we may see him invoke the constitutional provision of "a national emergency" and dismiss congress. That is what Chavez did in Venezuala.

    11. Gayle says:

I read where he started the speech "good to be back in Texas". Who are these people that listen to him? Can they not see the destruction behind his lies? I never thought he was a good orator as he sounds like a revival preacher and talked down to the audience. I only partially watched a speech once when he campaigned. His name alone kept me from thinking he was American. We've got the fight of our lives on our hands. The very least his admin has done for us is show us who our reps really are.

      • Elizabeth says:

I couldn't agree with you more. I always thought he sounded like a "fire and brimstone" type of preacher not a politician. I guess that also stems from him being catapulted from a fledgling political career to the highest office in our country. Please Republicans don't shoot ourselves in the foot with these primaries so we can get this poser out of office!

    12. Marilyn says:

A more poignant article could not have been written on Obama. Unfortunately, articles such as these should have been written 4 years ago. Everything that was pointed out here could have been discerned by doing just a little research about what this man believes. It was there for all to see – if your eyes were open. Unfortunately, the media and the politicians decided to hide his background, not question his eligibility and wanted to undermine the American dream in favor of socialism. Even more unfortunate is that this bell will be hard to unring. Just look at the damage Jimmy Carter did to this country in 4 years. This next election will be the LAST one that will be even close to electing a conservative. The demographics have changed and the have nots will out vote the haves. Goodbye America.

      • Barbara From Harlem says:

I feel your pain too. We can't give UP. America, as we have known it, is worth the fight and worth the struggle. First, we must rid ourselves of Obama and as many as we can identify that think like he thinks — SOCIALISM – SOCIALISM and more SOCIALISM. Don't get discouraged, your're not alone and we, the patriots of America, are in the trenches with you.

    13. Jill Maine says:

I am looking so forward to this guy's defeat. If he ever gets reelected we are doomed.

      • Scotty says:

We could be doomed if the LIBERAL MEDIA support continues and IF the have nots turn out to vote. Every conservative vote will count! We must get our Country back.

      • Gustyj says:

We may be doomed then because he has given ACORN $15 billion for another fraud election just like 2008.

    14. Lloyd Scallan says:

If this nation is to survive, we all must realize Obama does not want America to improve. He does not want prosperity. He does not want jobs, He does not want the economy to improve. To the contrary, every one of his policies are specifically designed to continue to destroy our American way of life and drive us into total socialist government control. What is so shocking is that so many citizens still support Obama, despite the open evidence of what is his agenda.

      • james says:

Umm, prosperity, jobs, the economy, and the American way of life were shot to pieces by the last Republican president. The GOP fights Obama at every step because THEY do not want things to improve because whatever is bad for an Obama reelection is good for THEM. Filibuster that Lloyd. This website is a friggin' rabble convention lol.

    15. Mustang says:

Your title should have been, “The latest Incarnation…” Mr. Obama does have one thing in common with Theodore Roosevelt —National Socialism. And while it may be true, even Mr. Roosevelt would be aghast at how far the progressives have taken socialism in America, the fact remains that Norman Thomas was correct in his predictions: America has happily accepted socialism under the guise of progressive liberalism. I must say that I believe conservative intellectuals do America a disservice by referring to socialists by their preferred name, progressives. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking and we as a nation are not getting any smarter about confronting this foreign ideology.

      • FalconFlight says:

Spot on! To call them Liberals or even Progressives is to turn a blind eye to the political genocide being committed by these people who are no longer Americans in thought or action. There can not be coexistence, one ideology must win and one must lose. They themselves, or at least their ideological mentors always declared that coexistence was impossible, and I believe that.

      • Mango says:

Well said, Mustang. I am heartened by the number of Democrats and former Moderate Republicans who are now wide awake. In my area they are leaders in groups such as the Tea Party, intent on educating others and making the necessary changes. They have no problem calling a PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL BY THEIR TRUE NAME, SOCIALIST. It is a tough uphill fight, Semper Fi

    16. Lynda says:

I listened to soundbites of the President's speech on the evening news last night and did a slow burn.

Having been born in the 50's I grew up being told that "Life is NOT FAIR," and that if you want to be successful you have to earn it.

If you turn Obama's logic on its head, on one side he is saying…the government will make everything FAIR; BUT, if you dare to rise outt of mediocrity and become successful we will punish you with higher taxes and single you out as greedy.

Question? How FAIR was it for the Obama administration to give millions and millions of taxpayer dollars to Solyndra just because it was one of his handpicked "green" energy projects?

I guess this administration gets to pick and choose life's winners, but if the American people are smart, come November 2012 they will choose to elect another President that believes in American Exceptionalism not Socialism!

    17. JJR says:

It would be interesting to have access to the marching orders that POTUS receives telling him what to distroy next, what crisis to create where, and how to manage his administrative czars. Some people may believe he has "golden-tongue" speech, but they are the ones with itchy ears ready to promote the hype and chains from dishonest rhetoric.

    18. T Coyne says:

A true vision of Juan Peron.

    19. bassboat says:

If the man-child is re-elected John Galt will have to return. The producers will need to shut down. They will be shut down by the government on the government's conditions or they can do it own their own and dictate the terms. Either way is bad. 2012 is the election year for the economic soul of our country. If obama is re-elected one might as well quit his job and sign up for welfare, free cell phones, and food stamps. We are entitled to everything for free aren't we?

    20. Stirling says:

This president has just "Come out of the closet" in reguard to his intentions.. Those who think he actually is just "mistaken, but with good intentions" should take note of the word "FAIR" which was used nearly every other word in his speach.. The word "Fair" in Socialist/Marxist terms has different meaning then what America has understood the word "Fair" to be. Look to the dictators (Musolini, Stalin, Hitler) in the past that have used this term to manipulate the population to belive the propaganda, which ultimately lead to loss of their freedoms when the regeims turned on it's people. Don't buy into "Hope and Change" part 2 this time arround.

    21. Clearhead says:

We are all amazed that the 'president' PUBLICLY, LOUDLY, and FINALLY blurted out in a rare moment of truth, his real agenda of the subjugation of America. Now we have heard it from 'the horse's mouth' and if we ignore it we will not be able to blame our imminent slavery on Bush, obama, anyone or anything else. Only on ourselves. America — the bell spring on your alarm clock has completely run down. Either get up and face the day, or roll over and go back to sleep fantasizing that 'Nanny' will take care of you when you elect to get up.

    22. MJP says:

What's the old saying? Wake up America. Maybe we should apologize to the world for Obama.

    23. Obama's philosophy, has failed and will always fail. All one, OBAMA ESPECIALLY has to do is look at what has happened to the economies in Europe to see how big government and socio/communist agendas doom all to failure.

Congress controls the purse strings and Bush tried to warn U.S. about "Frankfurter and Dodd's" manipulation through Fannie and Freddie which started w/ threat of prosecution of banks by by the DOJ under RENO/ CLINTON who reminds me a bit of Holder somehow. Smoke these facts pal.

      • Barbara From Harlem says:

How sad and untrue. Remember the Democratc and how they stop any and all regulating of Fannie and Freddie which caused a domino effect on our economy. What about the trillions that he was suppose to Stimulate the economy with? Does it even matter to you how he tosses tax-payers' dollars overseas for abortions and protecting the rights of homosexuals? Meanwhile, Americans are out of work, on food stamps, paying more at the pump and in the grocery store. Opps – forgot – liberals don't like truth, facts or reality.

      • FalconFlight says:

Worthless out of context bilge. The budget, the deficit has growth without interruption, as does the massive intrusion of a soft tyranny…for now.

      • stan says:

Ronald Regan is the reason there was a surplus for Clinton!!! He could do a better job as a dead man the Obama ever could as a live one!!! And Bush the 2nd was a fiscal moderate, not a conservative!! He spent way too much!!! We need a man who empowers the people to provide for themselves, not a politician who teaches people someone owes them something and expects "Bib Government" to take care of their needs!!! Get off you butt and take care of business!!!

      • TheBeagle says:

Don't worry about laying out the facts to these folks Clarence. They don't want to hear it. They certainly don't want to believe it.

      • bellicus_pium says:

Newt Gingrich and the '94 Revolution FORCED William Jefferson Clinton to balance the budget.
Can ANY liberal be intellectually honest?

Bush's "No Child Left Behind" is a disaster.
The Medicare Prescription Drug entitlement is a disaster.

You see Clarence, CONSERVATIVES will not just drink the Kool-Aid like you "P-R-O-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E-S."

Would that be Marxist Grape or Socialist Orange?

    25. Rose Hammer says:

      • Bobbie says:

gosh Mr. Swinney, you need to settle down. Bush AND his democratic majority also left Obama a number of excuses at Obama's convenience.

      • David says:

Same old BS, it's all Bushes fault. Obama will go down as one of the most divisive and destructive presidents of all time. Bush was a bad president as well, what does that have to do with the fact that Obama is a wrecking ball?

      • Steve Chapman says:

Something tells me you don't like Bush. Good God, look at the mess BHO is going to leave to Gingrich!

      • DriverDave79 says:

Don't disagree with your numbers, Mr Swinney; however, you have to put them into context.
Clinton presided over one of the greatest expansions of our economy ever … thanks to the twelve years of groundwork laid by his predecessors. During that time, the Dem's implemented rules that forced mortgage companies to accept sub-prime loans … and then they turned those loans into caustic investment vehicles. The house of cards could not stand … not because of President Bush's policies, but in spite of them. Wake up sir … you are as deluded as the president himself if you believe HIS policies can lead us to economic recovery.

    27. Robert A Hirschmann says:

I, for one, am ashamed to admit that the people elected this man to be the leader of this great (or once great) country. He totally ignores the will of the people he is supposed to lead. Even if I ran against him I would win because he is a born loser in the eyes of the people. Everything he tries is a failure and he keeps on pushing his insane rules and regulations on this country. If he, by some miracle, gets re-elected we are doomed. Furthermore, if we elect another RINO into the white house we will not be much better off. We have to get back to the Constitution. That's why I'm voting for RON PAUL even if I have to write him in.

      • zelda lee hoover says:

So right!!! If he is reelected, we (all true Americans) can truly be ashamed… Pray daily for our country… We desperately need an American patriot, a true American, to LEAD. Not dictate.

      • Karla, CA says:

A write-in would assure an Obama victory. Are you sure you want that?

    28. Basia says:

Obama's true colors showed in technicolor in yesterday's speech. To simply call him a progressive is an understatement and much too polite. It is quite clear that he is an avowed Marxist and is dangerous to this nation and what it stands for. He has nothing positive to say about this great nation and its people and I for one am getting very tired of his negativity and division. It is quite obvious that he disdains this greatest country in the world and cannot bring himself to say anything good about it.

    29. Brad Kelley says:

O'Bama is all too predictable these days, if you are familiar with the Saul Alinsky play book.

    30. Dan says:

Unfortunately there is a growing number of Americans who totally subscribe to Obama's ideals because they are dependent on government for their income. It's a growing monster and I fear if it is allowed to get much bigger we will have reached the tipping point. Is there enough of us left who believe in the Constitution to pull us back from the edge or socialism?

    31. Jim Buzzell says:

      A criminally corrupt administration!

    32. bentonmarder says:

Dr Johnson once noted that "fanatics, when proven wrong, redouble their efforts". In our own time, we saw the collapse of Soviet-style socialism, the transmogrification of Chinese-style socialism, the growing insolvency of Europe due to European-style socialism, the failure and misery of other socialisms—and Obama and the Democratic Party redouble their efforts. 'The Illusion of the Epoch' becomes 'Obama, the God that Failed".

    33. Diane says:

If there is one thing I remember my parents saying that resounds in my ear to this day is "Life isn't fair."

    34. Kevin Kirkwood says:

President Oboma got rid of the American made SUV and mini van. It seems they have been replaced Asian made SUV's and mini vans. Were Asian car manufacturers contributors to his campaign?

    35. Jim says:

Prezbo is once again spouting his 'fairness" routine. so let's take it to its next step, that the gov't knows best. It is the gov't that should determine who gets into college and which college. No special exemptions for alumni, big givers, etc. everyone gets a 'fair" shot at admission. You think the Ivy League schools would like that? LOL

    36. This is really pathetic. The man cannot even hide his disdain for what made America the greatest country in the world. He is really telling us, the majority of Americans still loyal to the idea of American Exceptionalism, that we should join him in his continuing, unrelenting, dogged crusade for transforming America because America, in his eyes, is NOT good enough. Life in America, today, is NOT fair. Occupy Wall Street is right on. The Tea Party is wrong. Obama Care is right. A balanced budget is wrong.

    37. d.stout says:

Wow, soooooooo true. We can only hope and pray that the majority of voters see through this veil of lies and half truths spewing from the commander in deception. Many americans are blinded by the class warfare rhetoric and fairness crap. We have our work cut out for us. "Lets roll"

    38. deanotow says:

I don't know how you could describe Obama any better, unless he's hiding another person under his policies and politics.

    39. Rod says:

Since when did the Heritage Foundation fall into line with the politically correct crowd and start calling liberal thinking "progressive" ? Of all the organizations that should call a spade a spade, Heritage should be the one. Your lack of accurate characterization is disgusting to me.

    40. Randy Howk says:

Wow; This was a true" Marxist Call to Action". This speech has been give by Lenin, Mao, Stalin, Chavez and Castro, just sub proletariat for workers and bougoise for capitalist. B HOs' coming out party. Hang on folks its gonna get messy! He actually said," our Country, as founded, (free markets) doesn't work and has never worked!"

    41. Wayne Peterkin says:

Mr. Brownfield has written a very good article. Erick Erickson of Human Events said it far better than I could. I quote him:

“When the top 1% generate 20% of the income and pay 40% of the taxes in this country, what exactly is their fair share?”

I would like to hear Obama's answer to that question.

    42. Leftshot says:

Last night I had dinner with a family that emigrated from Hungry in the early 80s. They spoke passionately of how the United States is quickly becoming politically like the country they fled. They are alarmed! It's the same story when I have contact with anyone who emigrated from Eastern Europe, the USSR, or another of their satellite countries.

      We better listen.

Why would we think that someone who believes in Marxism, Communism, or is a 'liberal' or 'progressive' (which are just other labels for the same thing) why would we think that someone who believes in these things is qualified to lead and govern in our Republic? The answer is they aren't qualified. They don't believe in the 'Rule of Law', the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights. They are fundamentally opposed to our freedoms and our form of government.

Why would we think that any of these people are qualified to write our American history textbooks, or select them, or to teach them. The answer is they aren't qualified. The 'liberal-progressive-communist-Marxist' will say, 'But that's discrimination', which only goes to show how foreign their thinking is to the American Ideal. Where people of all colors and races from all nations are welcome to come and join us. But to join us means to learn our ways and ideals and to take oaths to uphold them. America has been a place where character, and merit, and allegiance to these American ideals matter to our core.

But 'liberal-progressive-communist-Marxists' believe none of these things. They are the enemy within.

    43. ron says:

Why does Heritage and other conservatives play into the liberals game by referring to them as
Progressives?? We should call socialists, socialists or communists which ever applies at the time.
We accept media terminology so that the public can for the most part not understand what is being said and
      done to this country.

    44. dlt58 says:

Obama: "And we have to admit, it’s one that speaks to our rugged individualism and our healthy skepticism of too much government. That’s in America’s DNA. And that theory fits well on a bumper sticker. But here’s the problem: It doesn’t work. It has never worked." FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WILL THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL SUPPORT OBAMA ACTUALLY READ/HEAR HIS WORDS?

    45. Phil says:

Once again, Obama is showing the nation his true political roots. The thing that scares me most, is that the Republican voter will not show up election day because of the possible candidate on the Republican side. I would vote for Daffy Duck if it would ensure that Obama would loose the election in 2012. There is nothing good about his presidency.

    46. Jack Woodhead says:

Success' not "fairness," is a reasonable goal.

    47. FlaJim says:

We need to stop using the euphemisms and start calling a spade a spade. The White House occupier is in no sense 'progressive.' In all his actions and words he's regressive and demonstrable socialism, if not Marxism, are his guiding principles. He's also clearly anti-American, something that shouldn't be surprising in one from a Marxist family who spent his formative years in countries or enclaves where things like saluting the flag or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is a foreign concept.

The boy in the White House has constantly advocated a complete change in how our government institutions are run and our society should be organized. A news alert to the little man: With few exceptions, we got along just fine for over 230 years, without your way of thinking, and became the envy of the world. We accomplished that with hard working people who were self reliant, didn't rely on government, and embodied American Exceptionalism. Now, get out of the way and stop bothering us.

    48. Reuben says:

In the picture of this article, you see Barack Obama raising his hand, but in the background of that hand, you also see a woman in prayer.

Prayer is the communication from us to GOD. When GOD has been given a new meaning so that one cannot express prayer openly, then oppression becomes apparent.

Yes, jobs are important, money is important, health is important, but where is GOD in all of this?

    49. gary sheldon says:

God bless our troops and save the Republic.

    50. Grasshoppus says:

Interesting that in an article entirely about the president's speech, there was not even a single quote about what the man actually said in his speech.

    51. Richard B says:

"If there was any doubt where President Barack Obama's ideological heart lies,"

What is it that Barack Obama is President of?

    52. stroud says:

After saying that the rich only paid 1% in taxes in this speech, the White House later in the day said that this was wrong. So the liar-in-chief does it again! He will say anything, lie, cheat, encourage the stealing of votes (Indiana has just revealed how people's names got on the petition in 2008 to get Obama on the ballot in Indiana &;when interviewed the very ones whose names appeared said they did not sign it and the person who is behind it wouldn't comment) and do anything to stay in office and get more power. We need this like we need another problem!!!

    53. RENEE BAUM says:

    54. toledofan says:

Well, I have to say, this speech, was probably one I thought I'd never hear from the sitting President of the U.S.A. It is just down right depressing to listen to this guy put the country down, talk about all our failures, and how bad a place America is. We need to call him what he is; a socialist or even a communist and not try to flower the smell. What is odd in all of this is that Obama still has about 30% of the people or more who support what he is doing.

    55. Greg S. says:

Thank you for a great article! When the American people look at the problems in the European countries created by "big government" and the high levels of debt, taxes, entitlements, etc., we can see the direction Obama is taking us……and we do not want it! – Greg S.

    56. Scott D says:

A recent Clarus Poll found 78% of voters believe there should be “less regulation of how people make daily choices in their lives and jobs.” And the President thinks a winning strategy is calling for even MORE regulation? Really?

    57. coertel says:

a wolf in sheep's clothing….shame on him the first time…shame on America if there is a second time!!

    58. Jeanne Stotler says:

You want to know what I think is "fair", I think it would be "fair" if I got to keep more of what I earned, I think it would be "Fair" if people who are able bodied and on Welfare be required to do community service and attend some kind of training program and a limit to how long they keep on Welfare. I think it would be "fair" if people hiring illegals would be fined heavily, ICE could be checking, It would be "Fair " if the laws were upheld evenly and rich were no in cushy prisons. BHO talks about doing "FAIR" share, most people I know do more than their fair share so those on the dole can sit around and smoke dope and not do a thing, I worked 60+ hours a week for over 20 yrs., I had to in order for my kids to live as they did before my husband died, I think I did more than my "fair share", now I'd like to see BHO do his fair share and stay off of AirForce 1 and work for this country instead of sayoing we are "Lazy and soft'.

    59. Bill says:

In his broadcast today, Rush Limbaugh was even more critical of Obama's speech in Kansas.
Why can't the RNC personnally attack Obama with his OWN words from yesterday's demonstration of his incompetence.

    60. H Vern says:

Instead of using the term "progressive" to refer to the lkes of Obama and his supporters, call them what they are: Socialist, Neo-Marxist.

    61. tomten36 says:

What does this writer mean by Obama's "…cobbling together a coalition of culture elites and racial minorities" ?? The culture elites (millionares) are the ones Obama hopes to hit with a 1.9% surtax. They will not be part of his coalition.

    62. redhawk says:

One More the Programmed Anti American proved that someone forgot to program "INTELLICENCE IN ECONOMICS" in his Tape which he recites rather Glibly but totally STUPIDLY!
May be American Economics was asubject that he skipp4ed while "toking" or Main Lining at College????

    63. Retired Lady says:

Truly amazing this speech! Clearly this speech sets for all time the clarity of Barry's vision—socialism! Yet Barry, who some think is the "smartest man EVER to occupy the office of the Presidency," is clearly defining his ideology—socialism! Hopefully this speech will be published broadly so some of the 30% still thinking Barry is the Messiah, will finally understand him for what he is, a socialist! A socialist who has NEVER believed in this country!

    64. West Texan says:

Although not my favorite founder, Alexander Hamilton said as much in his general introduction to the Federalist commentaries. " … those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun their career by paying an obsequious court to the people; commencing demagogues, and ending tyrants." America cannot afford an another Obama term. He needs to be voted out this November

    65. Dave says:

If that performance yesterday was supposed to be a campaign speech its only effect will be to help the campaign of whoever ends up running against him.

    66. Jeanne says:

All the above having been said… did you hear how the people were cheering him. That's what is so scarry. I'm not so sure anyone can defeat him to 2012. He has his tentacles wrapped around just about everything. His agencies like the EPA now work around Congress to enforce more and more regulations. What he can't have passed in one Bill, he just hides in a different Bill and he uses a technique of stages, such that Stage One sounds like it may be something good but watch out for Stages 3 and 4. What he couldn't get past in the Healthcare Bill, he hid in the Stimulus Bill. The creation of a healthcare "Comparative Effectiveness Panel of Experts" is one example. In 2014, it is this Panel that will or will not approve a procedure and if your doctor refuses he will be fined. Obama is someone to be feared… someone who knows how to use power…and someone who is definitely not inept.

    67. Ronald Ceres says:

Obama and Chavez two traitors perfect together but not for the U.S.A. We must defeat this Marxist and undo so much of what this pretender to the throne has devised.

    68. Rusty says:

I am embarrassed to have Obama as our President. I will never ever again puchase a GM car or for that matter anything that is made by a UAW worker. The UAW supports Obama and I don't!

    69. Citizen Dave says:

Obama and "progressive liberalism" are anachronisms, vestiges of a by-gone era. There was a time when excesses of capitalism, the robber barons, child labor and the dangerous work conditions of a new industrial age needed reform. But this is not the times we live in and the rhetoric Obama tries to resurrect does nothing to address the real problems. I am not sure Gingrich can do it either, but so far he sounds like the only grown-up in the room.

If I were on Newt's team I'd tell him less is more….i.e. fewer ideas, but critical ones well staked out and repeated over and over and over again.

    70. Searcher says:

What is meant by "fairness" in the syntax of this reactionary socialist? I think that it means "more" from those who have to be given to those who demand it. Always more. Perhaps "moreness" would be more appropriate than "fairness".

    71. Curt Krehbiel says:

"President Obama is at his core a dyed-in-the-wool progressive who sees the federal government as the answer to all of America's problems. And he is charging full steam ahead on this far-left course toward Election Day 2012, despite the total failure of his big-government policies and an American people who have flatly rejected the message he is trying to sell."

"An American people who have flatly rejected the message he is trying to sell" but sadly enough perhaps not enough American people to defeat him in 2012. The people that pay no income tax and are loving the extended unemployment benefits, the illegals that Acorn will assure get to the polls to vote for Obama, the union members, the welfare recipients, the uninformed that always vote Democrat, ad infinitum, constitute a voting block that may give him four more years to complete his transformation of these United States to his socialist, if not communist, ideals.

    72. Leith N. Wood says:

After Obama's disgusting speech yesterday, no thinking American, who loves his or her country could possibly vote for him again. Culture elites and racial minorities may continue to overlook the facts or admit that socialism or in some cases communism does not work and never will. However, there are a huge number of Americans, who recognize the truth and are working to take back their country and the freedoms thrown away by Obama and his motley crew.

    73. Dave O'Connor says:

Of course, he identified with the country's premier dysfunctional political family.

    74. Leith N. Wood says:

Please print my comment. Thank you. Heritage helps keep me sane.

    75. kent says:

An incredible article. This should be published in every newspaper and magazine in the country. Let the entire country read how this man has dismantled the United States.

    76. Big Money says:

Best article I've read in a while. Well articulated, and so true.

    77. THE SOOTHSAYER says:

More discomfort, I want to read that speech without going to one of his campaign prompts. "Meager beginnings", I am the son of a chicago physician and business investor lucky to visit Indiana let alone live in Indonesia plus the Poukeewookee private pay prep school in Honolulu, who paid the ticket there? Next off he goes to Occidental College, a third tier private, in Los Angelus on someone's dime because there exists nothing that suggests high SAT's or high school super academics to earn full boat academic scholarship dollars. The questions surrounding his acceptance to and means of support at Columbia are insane. During the 1980's college, tuition, housing, transportation, food, life costs in New York City were $20,000 per year minimum, $400/weekly.

    78. J E Houser says:

I can NOT answer without extreme PROFANITY: so, I'll say nothing.

    79. Wayne Grievo says:

Obama is the greatest threat our nation has ever faced. He hates the Constitution and he hates America. He belongs in jail. Lied when he took his oath office. He swore to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. He has by passed congress and all of us by using "REGULATIONS" ie, edicts from the ruler of the known world. He is a liar, a thief (his mortgage) and will do anything to weaken WE THE PEOPLE. God help us, but first lets help ourselves. Stand up every chance you get and tell the truth: The Queen has no clothes on. Say what you see with your own eyes, hear what your ears are telling your heart. This man is an enemy to our country, our economy our military and all of our rights under the constitution. Vote him out. He should be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors against the USA and all of us. Be carefull, he has a high IQ with no heart or common sense. He is a fancy bomb thrower. Very dangerous. EVIL

    80. Blair Franconia, NH says:

Barack Obama doesn't care who he hurts.

    81. einodmilvado says:

"This is not the way to lead America to prosperity, to stand the economy on its feet, or to put the millions of unemployed ." What makes you think that is what he wants to do? He is out to destroy this country, make no mistake. Don't be so naive.

    82. PADDY O says:

    83. Hharry says:

I keep remembering about the GOP legacy of 2008 and think at least my 401 K is no longer a 201K.
To bad the past GOP leadership is still there.

    84. Rusty says:

      Mr. Swinney,

You failed to mention how much trillions debt Obama has piled up in the last 3 years on his own as far as the eye can see. How much debt is he leaving to himself or whoever takes over? These are numbers, not opinion.

    85. FalconFlight says:

We cannot just defeat this Enemy of everything Americans believe in, but the DemProgressive movement that we know is simply Marxism. The GOP is pretty quiet again, seemingly without conviction, no matter the provocation. I have never been so ashamed. How could so many be so unaware of this man's intense, viseral animus of the nation that elected him to in fact represent the entire nation.

    86. Jeanne Stotler says:

16 times he said FAIR, If everyone was paying "Fair share' THEN ALL WOULD PAY SOME FED iNCOME TAX, if allwas fair, welfare recipients would do community service in exchange for Welfare payments. If all was fair and everyone got a "fair shake' THEN RETURNING GI's would be welcomed home and give the medical care promised them, and all senior's relying on soc. sec. that they paid for would not be made to feel that they were being dumped. Life is not always fair BUT then the goverment needs to be fair first.

    87. DriverDave79 says:

" … as he prepares to run next year." Are you kidding? Looks to me like he's ALREADY vacated his day job for the campaign trail. And the GOP had better be very careful, lest they incite the ire of true conservatives and cause a Ross Perot-like debacle because Palin or Trump were so appalled at the ticket that they couldn't resist jumping into the race as a third party alternative.

    88. Dana Saylor says:

It is not only BO that we sould be worried about, its also the people who elected him!

    89. Pat from Texas says:

This is so typical of BO's speeches. He simply sees the world as a different place than we do. What a farce and what a clown he is to think that anyone over ten years old would believe anything he said.

    90. Heritage Foundation's reticense to attack the Obama Administration is one of the distinctions between Consevatives and Liberals (remember when liberal meant laissez-faire ) or Democrats, or Progressives or Socialists or Communists or Maxists…Human Dignity. Or tactically speaking, give him enough rope to let him hang himself. _ Anyone who doesn't understand how dangerous President Barack Hussein Obama's is to American's Freedom after yesterday's speech should be assigned remedial history reading such as_last weeks Wallstreet Journal's reports on European Economies (all forms of socialism), watch in real time their failure._We can still prevent that failure in America

    91. Sarah Southall says:

My comment is really a question:
How is it legal, much less ethical, for Congress to continue to approve the spending of money–with the tacit requirement to borrow almost half of it–when we all realize we are never going to be able to repay 15 trillion dollars of debt? I'm surprised our credit rating has not seen additional declines but I can't believe that is far off.

Let's close Congress for a few months along with a demand of 30% reduction in next year's budget using 2008 expenditures as our base. That might wake folks up to the seriousness of our financial plight.

I like Perry's idea of a part-time Congress so they have less time to spend our future– Perhaps if they were working for a living they'd be more understanding of our objections to the way they are doing business and they'd prioritize how they would spend their time and our money.

    92. Seafarer20 says:

      Americans Be Afraid!!

    93. Zac says:

Yeah because the president is 100% responsible for the laws that congress passes. Taxes, Budget, 'Obamacare', stimulus. All must be approved by CONGRESS, before the president signs it. Also, I find it VERY peculiar that the Heritage Foundation is displaying this giant front-page article trashing Barack Obama for big government and the undermining of Liberties, yet they remain completely silent about the 60 Senators who just voted to allow the indefinite detention of American Citizens without trial in the name of 'Counter-Terrorism.' How much more one-sided and hypocritical can you get? Sheesh.

    94. Gil Searcy says:

Great summary of our current President.

He will be voted out of office very soon and we can start America back to becoming the "land of opportunity" and a leader in the world.

    95. Illusionaryr says:

Lets be honest folks. Obama has flat refused to do what is necessary to rebound the economy. Bush only did the first half of what was necessary. He cut taxes. Unfortunately, what he then went and did was not to cut spending but to increase it. That being said, Mr Obama makes bush look like a penny pincher. That man increased spending by a larger margin in his first year then Bush did in his entire presidency. failed stimulus packages, obamacare, continued efforts in war he was supposed to have ended ( even if I dont think they are finished cause they are not). This man wants more spending and higher taxes. Think he will get away with it by taxing the wealthy. True business men dont pay their own taxes, especially not corporations. the price get added to the price of their products.

    96. sharinlite says:

The difference with Barack Obama is that he was "taken" under the wing of his progressive mentor and from that day forward was tailored to fit the moment when his mentor and his cronies could devise the prospects for his election to the Presidency. They had, after all, been attempting to achieve the ultimate position of power in America. A power they had been focused on since the l800's, perhaps earlier. Power they could not gain since Lincoln had won the Office of the President. Their merger with the Democratic Party was at final push to gain control of the USA. To this end, they were industrious until the McCarthy era when they too, were demonized. As it turns out, McCarthy was right but that is only now being a glimmer of attention. Because the progressive left fought tooth and nail with intimidation and threat they escaped too much attention. The l960's was their time to begin the transform America and it was not until 2008 and the destruction of Hillary Clinton's chances that they took control of what was left of the original Democratic Party and with very close attention to Alinsky tactics won. I believe that they were not really prepared to win in the 2008 election. But, they did. We may be grateful someday that because they were not as completely prepared as they wished, they won the fight but lost the war. That is why the election of 2012 is so vitally important. Because 95-98% if media, academia, educational and union apparatuses, by their own admission, are uberprogressive, extreme leftists,it will be very difficult. If the American people want a free society without government taxes and laws that will hold us all to mediocrity, they will vote for the only candidate that can save us: A Republican!

    97. Theoldstoryteller says:

President Obama constantly violates his oath to defend the constitution! IMPEACH HIM ALREADY!!!!!

    98. Theoldstoryteller says:

As much as I hate to admit it Bachman or Santorum are our only choices! Newt talks an excellent game but cannot be trusted. Romney is too Liberal. Ron Paul will assure Nuclear War. Perry is as lost as a ball in high weeds!

    99. Moozmom says:

I believe George Soros bought Obama's 2008 election and he will buy the 2012 election also and manipulate the results; Soros has already commented that winning the general election doesn't mean a thing. Obama sincerely believes in an ideology foreign to the Republic's principals. We have allowed our government and educational system to co-opt progressive, statist agendas and are now suffering for it.

    100. Blair Franconia, NH says:

Obama wants big government. He wants to make us into a European style social democracy. Ain't gonna happen.

    101. emily cinicola says:

God help us all if the citizens in this country don't vote this Obama out of office and take his crew of Liberals and czars with him. It is totally up to all of us to get this man out of office and we sure better pull together doing it, no matter what party affliation your with. Lets us citizens stand together for all our sakes and vote these idiots out of office. Please!!!!!!
