Potentially, how much money would be saved by the govt, ie taxpayers, if wealthy seniors were allowed to choose to op out of Medicare (buying a Private Medical Insurance Plan) while still keeping their Social Sercurity benefits? This option should be included as part of any Medicare restructuring/reform bill.

Interestingly, we have private insurance. My husband is retired after having 20 year retirement from public service. He served 28 years. He's nowhere near being eligible for medicare, AND we pay half on our medical insurance. His retirement asks him about four times a year to "apply soon for medicare" or "isn't it time to apply for medicare?" They can't wait to toss us off their private insurance and onto medicare. SO, while that would be a "good idea" for seniors to opt out, in OUR experience only, I can see issues with it since most private insurance companies want the older (and more costly) individuals out of their system as quickly as possible.
