  • Poll: 'Occupy' Movement's 'Radical' Agenda Way Outside the Mainstream

Democratic pollster Doug Schoen has conducted what he calls “the first systematic random sample of Occupy Wall Street opinion.” The survey’s findings suggest that the protest movement that has “occupied” New York City’s Zucotti Park for a month and spread across the country is not only unrepresentative of “the 99%”, but is actually far outside of the mainstream of American public opinion.

Scribe noted a pair of polls yesterday showing that Americans, by and large, consider the federal government more to blame for the state of the economy than Wall Street. Schoen’s poll dovetails with those findings, which suggested that the “Occupy” protestors – who invariably reserve most of the blame for Wall Street – are out of step with the American electorate.

Schoen detailed his findings in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday:

The protesters have a distinct ideology and are bound by a deep commitment to radical left-wing policies. On Oct. 10 and 11, Arielle Alter Confino, a senior researcher at my polling firm, interviewed nearly 200 protesters in New York’s Zuccotti Park. Our findings probably represent the first systematic random sample of Occupy Wall Street opinion.

Our research shows clearly that the movement doesn’t represent unemployed America and is not ideologically diverse. Rather, it comprises an unrepresentative segment of the electorate that believes in radical redistribution of wealth, civil disobedience and, in some instances, violence. Half (52%) have participated in a political movement before, virtually all (98%) say they would support civil disobedience to achieve their goals, and nearly one-third (31%) would support violence to advance their agenda…

What binds a large majority of the protesters together—regardless of age, socioeconomic status or education—is a deep commitment to left-wing policies: opposition to free-market capitalism and support for radical redistribution of wealth, intense regulation of the private sector, and protectionist policies to keep American jobs from going overseas.

Schoen’s conclusion: the president and liberals in Congress should be wary of throwing their support behind these protestors, for fear of alienating the political center.

Rather than embracing huge new spending programs and tax increases, plus increasingly radical and potentially violent activists, the Democrats should instead build a bridge to the much more numerous independents and moderates in the center by opposing bailouts and broad-based tax increases.

Put simply, Democrats need to say they are with voters in the middle who want cooperation, conciliation and lower taxes. And they should work particularly hard to contrast their rhetoric with the extremes advocated by the Occupy Wall Street crowd.

    1. Rather than advise the Dems, let's just allow them to shoot themselves in the foot.

    2. Alice Harper says:

the longer this goes on the more extreme it will become because they will always have to 'keep your attention'….OWS will not end well. The part that bothers me most is that our President praises this and the Democratic leaders support it. Wonder how Nancy Pelosi would like her 'wealth' redistributed. Maybe Harry Reid would have to give up his bushes that were bearing some kind of fruit….OWS would divvy those up too…..All I see is a bunch of non working, whining individuals wanting to take the money you made by working while they gripe and complain.

    3. Paul says:

Hmmmmmmm…..no people of color! They must be racist! Sorry to play the race card, but Ive seen waaaaaaay more minorities at Tea Party rallies! ironic. Of course, there were waaaaaaaay more people at the Tea Party rallies too!!!!

While a guest on The Factor, Marc Lamont Hill explained the absence of blacks at OWS. He said that Blacks don't protest unless it fits a 'Black' Movement' or agenda. In other words Blacks only care about Blacks.

        • Bobbie says:

Please don't suggest that's the attitude of all "black" people, as Marc Lamont Hill I'm sure did. All "black" people have been socially conditioned to focus on victimization over time and now by the ugly leads of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louie Fraudacon and the like, to the extent of subliminal thought control in public (van jones, jeremiah wright) and in public education (government schools.) Men of the 21st century? how unfortunately pathetic!

Telling people what to think (false, personal perceptions) instead of respecting people's ability to think for themselves to see for themselves. The real funny part is, they're paid with the "white" man's dollar even though it's the "white" man they despise so much. Men of the 21st century? how unfortunately pathetic! Scums of scams.

The goal continues to be to build resentment between us and keep people who have suffered controlled oppression, from rising above. Many are realizing their individual dignity and rising above the ignorance and belittlement of those in (leadership?) roles. People have been and continue to be brainwashed by black and white people, some officials. Men of the 21st century? how unfortunately pathetic!

The "tea party" has more than "white" people in it because ALL people WITH rational minds knows, are coming to know, the respect and concept of the American way with freedom leading… we can get along without the PAID force of conflict (authoritative government and their van jones, juan williams, marc lamont hill,) brainwashed tools insisting otherwise!

outlook: the good people of the 21st century will inherit peace through individual dignity!

    4. gerbil says:

We need to build a NOAH's ARK for the democrat losers and give it a one way GPS to wherever tyrranical and communist government they choose to land. I'm pretty sure their COMMUNIST bretherns would SINK their ship once it arrives in their waters. Even REAL COMMUNISTS would probably would put everyone of these marxists in prison or SHOT! REAL communists believe in HARD LABOR not lazy LEECHES like all these liberal democrat drug addicts and welfare cheats! I have NORTH KOREA, CUBA and VENEZUELA in mind. I won't put CHINA or RUSSIA because they use CAPITALISM to make money and they WOULD sink their boats as soon as it leaves the harbor. These protestors would be used as TARGET PRACTICE by the more hardcore communist power house.

    5. guest says:

Suits me and I hope the democrats listen to this guy. I can overlook somebody's label if the person himself is sensible. There are a lot of democrats in the US, and better, smarter, saner democrats would help us all. The current crop is sheer looney-tunes.

    6. I agree, the more they speak, the "more stupider" they look.

    7. much of the OWS's anger seemed directed right at this administrations repeatedly failed policies to get the economy moving again. at present, the WH comes off as a bunch of third graders punching buttons trying to launch a space shuttle, oh wait, they killed that too!

    8. Shirley says:

Never underestimate these types of ideologues and their tactics.

    9. Ferris B says:

i think the dems are a lost cause, yes let them lean far left and watch the no longer silent majority vote these people out ! except for san fran, they'll keep voting for pelosi long after she's dead !

    10. Bobbie says:

what a simple and excellent piece of advise!

just to add, if there was ever a democrat to trust, it's Doug Schoen!

    11. Richard Lionheart says:

These people sadly have never learned anything about money or Corporations or perhaps even life. Don't like Corporations? Become one and mind your own business … that is to say, become rich and you won't hate the rich anymore. You'll understand why it's better to use the system to become rich than it is to sleep in the streets blaming anyone who isn't a spoiled brat. Democrats love these "Steal form the Rich, Give to the Poor" Robin Hood types. It makes for a whole new generation of dependent voters. Also, sadly it leads to the destruction of Society as we know it. Think Marx, Hitler, Robespierre. ….. THINK.

    12. LB1901 says:

Hmm. My 'human need' is heavily invested in 'corporate greed' via my 401 K and mutual funds.

Does this mean my invite to the hippyfest is rescinded?

      • chantel says:

just because you have a 401 k doesnt mean its corporate greed. People are all trying to find a way to make it and a 401 k is a big risk because there are ways a bankruptcy can easily take that away. Its happened before and it will happen again. Imagine if those dollars are worthless because all dollars are worthless? this will be the day the biggest ponzey skeme will be realized.

    13. Jim says:

I saw this same garbage in the 60's and it killed the Dems for many years. So let the Dems, the media, the teachers, the unions and the rest of the left embrace this. Maybe then we , conservatives, turn the country around.

    14. DAVID says:

does the fact that violence would be a viable option for 31 % surprise anyone when we have a President that was willing to endanger American lives by selling assault weapons to Mexican drug cartels in oreder to advance his agenda , that being , the passage of the U.N . SMALL ARMS TREATY
