  • Reagan's Legacy to 'Preserve the Constitution'

Ronald Reagan communicated timeless truths about America— truths about freedom, limited government, hard work and opportunity—and these truths guided him while he was in office.  A thinker and avid reader of history, Reagan was guided by the first principles of the American founding, especially the idea of ordered liberty in our nation’s charter—our enduring Constitution.

In the opening paragraphs of his first inaugural address in 1981—much of which he personally drafted—President Reagan echoed the preamble of the Constitution, calling on “We the people” to do whatever needs to be done to “preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom” —America.  He understood our founding principles, and reminded us in that historic address that “Our Government has no power except that granted it by the people.”

Eight years later, in his farewell address to the American people, the President said that the American Revolution was “the first revolution in the history of mankind that truly reversed the course of government, and with three little words, ‘We the people.’”

Reagan read and understood the United States Constitution.  It was his North Star, and guided him in his decision making before, during, and after his presidency.  In his State of the Union speeches, Reagan referred to the Constitution more than any other president in the preceding 50 years—an average of 16 times per speech.  A survey of his presidential papers reveals 1,270 references to the Constitution during his eight years in the White House—and another 113 mentions of the Declaration of Independence.

Join us this Friday, September 9th, as two former Reagan cabinet members and two published Reagan historians discuss how the principles of The Founding and the Constitution provided the foundation for Reagan’s presidency and influenced his every decision.  Discover, for example, how and why Reagan chose Antonin Scalia for the United States Supreme Court.

Join us for this historic event as we celebrate President Reagan’s Centennial, and explore the philosophy and principles of the man himself.

I like to imagine how strong America and Americans would be today (especially immigrant) if government members after Reagan understood and respected American principles and his philosophy! Then I like to imagine how easy it is to turn around the undisciplined mess government control caused if the government administration today sincerely believe in America and had respect for the freedom and liberties of all respective to their individuality and understood to comply with respect of the founding documents. God Bless the American Constitution, God Bless Reagan for conducting his governance with respect in accordance. It's expected and required by American government, no questions should have to be asked. Reprimand is ethical to discipline the unethical government abuse of authority!

For the life of me, I can't understand how — if the National Debt skyrocketed from $1.137 Trillion when Reagan took office to $2.867 Trillion when he left Bush Senior with the mess — how Reagan is considered a fiscal whiz and some kind of hero???? He more than doubled the debt?

        • Bobbie says:

Reagan cleaned the mess from the democratic carter administration. Maybe for the life of you, you should consider more then numbers the socially indoctrinated only use for spin and consider the fact more people were living free and independent, which is what America stands for and what good leadership shows! Today's administration spends your money in favor of preferential lifestyles and protections of people government has no expectations in living for themselves. NOT AMERICA!! NOT THE ROLE OF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT! it's called take-over!

You say Reagan: "He more than doubled the debt?" Obviously the American people were much stronger with no sign of failure to cause crisis! Today's America, if it isn't someone being offended, It's a government program to pull their pants up…

America has been infiltrated by human weakness!!

I pray for the life of you, you start to think things all the way through! Learn the Constitution and the American government's proper role! take necessary considerations into account when comparing yesteryear to today! Know what freedom is and what it means that everyone that chose to live here, and by government influence, is dumb to know. Thanks!

Reagan has a legacy so distorted by the Conservative idolization of him that we may never have a clear picture of the real man behind the television. Did he rid the world of commie scum?

I would just like to say I MISS YOU MR. PRESIDENT. People will argue whether you were wrong or right on many subjects. But I believe you will go down in history as one of our BEST and SMARTEST Presidents. And FAIR. President Regan will also be known as one of our most BELOVED Presidents. My heart aches for those that knew him personally and loved him. Especially Fisrt Ladt Nancy Regan. I pray for them everyday. She was a great first Lady to share her wonderful husband with all of us. It was a great sacrifice for her. They had a wonderful life and could have done anything they wanted. President Regan sure did not take on this task for the money. They had all the money they needed. Ronald Regan did what he did because he was a great American and came to the rescue of this nation. I loved him then and I love him now. God Bless Nancy Regan for her sacrifice and standing by his side and helping this great man be a GREAT PRESIDENT.
