  • Morning Bell: The Fast and Furious Scandal Continues

A U.S. government gun-trafficking investigation gone horribly wrong has resulted in the death of a U.S. Border Patrol officer, some 2,000 firearms in the hands of criminals, and the dismissal of a 24-year veteran law enforcement official. This is the story of Fast and Furious, and yesterday the latest chapter unfolded when two top officials associated with the operation were removed from their positions, while a third individual resigned.

The story begins in the fall of 2009, when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) office in Phoenix, Arizona, began selling weapons to small-time gun buyers in the hopes of tracing them to major weapons traffickers along the southwestern border and into Mexico. Their efforts failed, the number of arms unaccounted for numbers around 1,500 as of late July, and about two-thirds of those guns ended up in Mexico, according to congressional testimony.

Tragically, the botched operation has had serious consequences. On the night of December 15, 2010, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shot and killed during an effort to catch several bandits targeting illegal immigrants in Arizona near the border. When law enforcement rushed to the scene, they discovered two of the killers’ assault rifles that were among those sold as part of Operation Fast and Furious. Additionally, 57 Fast and Furious weapons have been connected to at least an additional 11 violent crimes in the U.S.

In December 2010, ATF agent Vince Cefalu spoke out about the operation before the first reports on the story appeared in February. FoxNews.com reports that Cefalu said at the time, “Simply put, we knowingly let hundreds of guns and dozens of identified bad guys go across the border.” Other agents later came forward, congressional hearings have been held, and President Barack Obama called the operation “a serious mistake.” Cefalu, though, was forced to resign.

Yesterday, more Fast and Furious–related personnel changes came about when the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Kenneth Melson, the acting head of the ATF who presided over the operation, is being replaced and transferred to the Office of Legal Policy where he will serve as a senior advisor on forensic science. Heritage’s Lachlan Markay reports that “Melson bucked his superiors at DOJ in July by revealing details about the operation to congressional investigators in a closed door meeting with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), who have been investigating the operation in their respective roles.”

Also on Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona, Dennis Burke, announced his resignation. The Hill reports that “Burke oversaw the legal aspects of the Fast and Furious operation, providing advice to agents involved.” And The Arizona Republic reports that the lead prosecutor for Operation Fast and Furious cases in Burke’s office was also reassigned Tuesday. Issa, who has led the congressional investigation into the case, said that even with yesterday’s news, he will continue looking for answers:

While the reckless disregard for safety that took place in Operation Fast and Furious certainly merits changes within the Department of Justice, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee will continue its investigation to ensure that blame isn’t offloaded on just a few individuals for a matter that involved much higher levels of the Justice Department.

Meanwhile, the White House has said little about Fast and Furious. In June, President Obama said in a press conference: “My Attorney General has made clear that he wouldn’t have ordered gun running into Mexico. . . That would not be an appropriate step by the ATF.” He then deflected further questions by citing an “ongoing investigation.” And press secretary Jay Carney previously said that the President “did not know about or authorize this operation.” But as Heritage’s Rory Cooper wrote, “If that’s the case, how could neither he nor Attorney General Eric Holder not know about an operation that everyone else at the Department of Justice seemed to be actively involved in, including the Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Attorney and head of the ATF?”

And if the White House has been silent, so has the media. It has been 57 days since the press has questioned the White House on the matter, when ABC’s Jake Tapper peppered press secretary Jay Carney on the issue, asking why the public knows so little about the story, what the Administration is doing to get to the bottom of it, whether the acting head of ATF would go to Capitol Hill to testify on the subject, whether it is something the White House is worried about, and if the President upset about it. Carney’s reply: He referred Tapper to the Department of Justice and remarked, “I think you could assume that the President takes this very seriously.”

The President should take it seriously. And so should the American people. The ATF sold guns to criminals in Mexico, a life has been taken, and crimes have been committed with the weapons that were trafficked by the federal government. And yet, shockingly, questions remain under the Administration that called itself “the most transparent in history.” It’s time for more answers.

    1. Michael Paules says:

The bad guys should be FIRED, not reassigned !!!!!

      • Dennis Eck says:

yes, and lets get at the leaders that approved this idea rather than a couple pawns

      • Don says:

Typical government run around. The Peter Principle times 100. They are a pathetic bunch.

      • C A Buzbee says:

They should be in prison as this is a criminal offense. This includes Holder. The firearms dealers objected to the sales but were forced by ATF to make them. The reason seems to have been to create a situation to justify radical gun control legislation. There were already accusations that the Cartel weapons in Mexico came from the US through lax gun laws. All proved to be false.

      • azwayne says:

And imprisoned. They helped cartels buy guns with our taxpayers money, over $53 million, ask your representative how they approved these funds?"???

      • Gray says:

When will you guys realize that this goes all the way to the top?
Why would Oboma order southbound trains searched after the mexpres
        Visit

    2. Yeeeech says:

The main stream media has practiced, for 2.5 years, a kind of reverse discrimination when it comes to scandals, outrageous behavior, miscreants and failed performance by Democrats. Had "Fast and Furious" occurred under Bush or Reagan, the Democrats, liberals and media would be screaming bloody murder (appropriately) and asking for the AG's head., demanding investigations, interrogations and possibly impeachment.

      • Powdermonkey says:

Well said. I would also add that the same type of gross negligence by the national media is one of the reasons that too many people vote for liberal candidates and continue to keep their freebie-providing incumbents in office, leaving only the taxpayers to scream.

      • Colchic says:

I understand the anger an the frustrations, but we need to understand that not every ongoing operation of that type can be made public. The idea behind was not bad, only is the outcome. It could have been a successful operation as well. We know how things work in this world.

    3. nobama says:

This entire administration is a "clear and present danger" to the health of our republic.

    4. Derrill1 says:

Yet the people supposedly in charged were re-assigned rather than fired. How stupid can we be.

    5. CheyenneCowboy says:

The Great Coverup! More coverup stories from the king of transparency, the guy at the top, "the occupant," and his henchman, Eric Holder. They had to have know about F&F or they would not have been doing their jobs. Some low level peon did not approve this treachery and attempted deceit. This thing would not have been approved, if but not coming from the top tiers of our government. More heads need to roll on this one, starting with "the anointed one."

      • Powdermonkey says:

Obama and Holder continue to play the "blame game." "It's not our fault. We didn't know. We weren't informed." Hey: We pay plenty for these bozos to be informed. Nixon knew about Watergate, and the Washington Post found out about it. The rest is history. Where is the WP on this scandal? Where is the national news media?

    6. Dean says:

All the people involved in this operation should be put in jail for treason against the country, no matter how low or how high in the administration. WE NEED A FULL INVESTIGATION. CONGRESS?

      • Mary says:

I agree wholeheartedly, but who's going to have "guts" enough to do this? We need more people in Congress that have the cohonies that they had when running for election. Promises are just words.
I'd love to see them all in jail!!!!!!!

      • Karla, CA says:

I trust that Rep. Issa and Sen. Grassley are doing a full investigation. Once this is traced to Holder, he should be fired with no severance pay, no pension, nothing! He'll be paid handsomely, under the table, to keep him from pointing at President Teleprompter. I'm sure that the guy who was fired, and the two who were reassigned, have been paid a ton of hush money.

      • Steve says:

Same goes for Bush and Cheney for outing a deep cover CIA agent during a time of war

    7. Gary says:

I don't think there is any doubt why both the White House and the media are so quiet. There is no question in my mind that this leads directly back to Holder, and if it leads to Holder there is probably an Obama connection also. Whether the full truth ever comes out is questionable – the so-called "transparent" administration has been more like the "opaque" administration when it comes to disclosure. Also, the liberal media has had their noses firmly embedded in Obama's rear end ever since he burst upon the political scene. Anything that reflects negatively on Obama is not likely to get much press!

    8. Gramma says:

Why should we be surprised, since Obama has consistently said, "I was elected President," then he goes on to do whatever he wants, saying in your face, America and all of you dumb Americans who fell for my "hope and change" rhetoric and did not question anything about me because of my pearly whites hypnotizing you into fainting, then voting for me.

    9. BanderaBubba says:

It is incredible to me that anyone associated with this miscarraige is allowed to be "reassigned". Everyone involved, from those who did the poor planning, to those approving and executing the operation should be fired, and charged as co-conspirators in the death of the border patrol agent, and in each and every other crime where these weapons were found. Where is the accountability???

    10. jersey28105 says:

And press secretary Jay Carney previously said that the President “did not know about or authorize this operation.”

Only one possible response to this: BS!

    11. Frank says:

Another example of an out-of-control Federal Government that needs to be reigned in.

    12. Jeanne Stotler says:

This administration is SO out of touch with the rest of us. The AG and BHO are continually lying to us. In the 1800's we had troops on the border, it was called "Border dispute" John J. Pershing was in charge we fast forward and we find a POTUS who will not uphold the law and to compound it furnishes weapons that are used to kill Americans as well as others. Mr. Pres. and AG Holder let's put an end to this insanity and protect OUR Citizens stop bending laws in your favor so as to get re-elected, you are abetting lawlessness and causing a lot of unrest, this is TREASON.

    13. CBW says:

And the fix is in. The whistle blowers who brought this to light are saying that there's a cover up to protect high level political appointees. Keep drilling down, Issa and Grassley, and you'll find Eric Holder at the bottom, but it's going to take some work to get there.

    14. somnolence says:

The importance of this far supersedes the so-called "Saturday Night Massacre" of the Nixon administration in 1973, but you wouldn't know it if you had to rely on the traditional Big 3 broadcasting networks, or the front pages of the N.Y. Times or Washington Post. These hypocrites aren't even fooling themselves.

    15. milton says:

      articles should be shortened

    16. dibs says:

Finally!!, We are starting to get somewhere. We need to keep the pressure up until Eric Holder Resigns or is Fired. He must be held accountable for his actions  as the head of the failed plot to destroy our 2nd Amendment rights. This was his plan that he designed and implemented to take away yours and my rights to own guns. If Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry had not been killed by one of these weapons that was allowed to walk across the border, we probably would not have found out about this conspiracy until it was far too late to save the 2nd Amendment from complete destruction. This failed plot must be “totally” uncovered from its roots to its tips to see exactly who was involved. It is my firm belief that this goes all the way to the White House and was approved by Obama for his good buddy Eric Holder to carry out and implement the total destruction of our 2nd Amendment. They almost got away with it too.
      Almost..
      But they didn’t!

Now, it is up to us to make sure that they pay for their crimes! This was an illegal operation almost from the beginning to end. It actually started out as a legal operation under President Bush but was modified when Obama & Holder took power. The minute that they allowed guns to travel across the border into Mexico they broke the law. Not just our laws, They broke International laws & treaties that we have with the Country of Mexico. The fact that they let thousands of high powered military style weapons just walk across the border untraced is outrageous!! Our own government basically supplied the Mexican Cartels with the weapons to wage war against the Mexican government and they were (& are still) blaming it all on American’s like me & you!! By all rights,  whoever is found to be responsible for Gunrunner F/F should be extradited to Mexico to stand trial for being accomplishes to the murder of multiple federal and State authorities of Mexico. At the very least, they must ALL be fired and prosecuted for their participation in this illegal operation. If we let them get away with this, there will be no stopping them. They already think they are above the law-(because they are the law).
Keep contacting your Senators & Congressmen/women to let them know that “WE THE PEOPLE” won’t stand for this type of corruption in our government.
This may just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and brings Obama down from Power.

    17. Susan says:

That is what happens when you have a bunch of Liberals that care more about their agendas, than they do about Americas' citizens. Obama's cabinet, etc;, have never been anything but, academic professors and promoters of Socialists agendas, so they have no idea and do not care how the a real Government is suppose to operate. They only follow their agendas with no care of what damages or possibly lives, these agenda can do to America and American citizens.

    18. Mike, Wichita Falls says:

AG Holder, who dismissed the lawsuit against the Black Panthers for voter intimidation in 2008, has been packing left-wing idealogues into civil service positions at DOJ's Civil Rights Division according to pajamasmedia.com. Civil servants are immune to the changes likely made by new political appointees such as will hopefully happen in 2013. Are not Melson and Cefalu ATF civil servants? Are they not also immune from removal or demotion? If Holder can remove or demote them, and I'm sure he knows about that, then why can't the next AG, someone actually interested in justice, remove civil servants who undermine the rule of law and not carry out the directives of the political appointees?

      • Kelly Crist says:

There is a way of removing them. It's called Federal Criminal Indictment and serious time in Federal prison.

      • Karla, CA says:

Glad you pointed out PajamasMedia.com. They've done a series of 8 articles (maybe more to come?), exposing the recent appointments of a couple hundred new lawyers. Each article focuses on a different division of the DOJ (only one is on the Civil Rights Division,) and resumes and backgrounds of each individual are given. The info was only released by the DOJ following a lawsuit by PJM citing the Freedom of Information Act, and even then, much was redacted before finally turning it over. Every single new hire is a radical, left-wing, racist. Yes, every single one.

    19. John Butler says:

Keep hammering on this issue. Holder must go!

      • Gary says:

I was a young man when the Watergate scandal broke out in the news. Granted it was not the most ethical behavior by a president, but all Nixon really did was some political spying. Once the Dems and the liberal media got wind of it, they appointed the special prosecutor and were going to hound him to the end of the earth until he finally resigned.

        • Gary says:

The end of my reply posted above got cut off. The political spying by Nixon was nothing compared to Fast & Furious. Although it was unethical it did not result in the transfer of dangerous weapons or result in the deaths of human beings, including Americans. If Watergate was worthy of a special prosecutor, then Fast & Furious is worthy of some lonnnnggggg jail terms for some of its participants.

    20. Ric Farrah says:

Well we know there is a White House connection. F&F was financed with money from the Obama stimulus package that VP Biden was overseeing.

    21. John Butler says:

I appreciate your efforts to air this issue. The media is giving it a pass as usual.

    23. Bruce says:

the Fast and Furious personnel changes are such an blatant, obvious cover up for " higher ups " and the white house it is insulting to all America that there isn't more " noise " about it.
I sure hope Issa brings much greater pressure on all involved

    24. Johnny says:

All who had knowledge of this idiotic and illegal operation that did directly result in the death of an American border agent should be in jail. Regardless of their being in the justice dept. , the white house or any other arena of government. They should be charged at the very least negligent homicide of a federal officer. This includes eric holder and obama. The entire obama administration should be arrested by any sheriff in the nation.

      • Patricia says:

wish they would arrest all the political crooks. jail and deport. after the election, it will be a pleasure to watch them walked to regular jail. close all the special federal ones. save that money. about time, the bad guys lose. tired of oblabla lies and corruption. hate hill and UN antiAMerican actions and jeers. Deport them too. No federal reserve, no IMF, no epa,no commerce(need 60% tariffs on everything, and buy American) and no energy unless let Americans start drilling in Anwar for Americans, more coal, more shale, more nuclear (Palin could fix that dept) and deep, deep cuts in all spending, then cap and balance every budget at lowest amounts.Past time for some money sense. Do not overspend. Pay off debt, principal not just interest. No more giveaways. No foreign aid to anyone. Conserve. Deport all illegals and criminals now.Up the ante.

    25. Stratselmer6 says:

This report is all well and good but Eric Holder should be the first to resign and if not, fired.
Ignorance in a key leadership position is not a defense for something that happens on your watch.
Responsibility is not a trait of this administration, as we have dozens of examples.

    26. Mike says:

This reminds me of the operations in Central America when the Reagan administration supplied guns to the "right wing" Contras. Of course that was eventually brought to light and was even adjudicated in the international Court of Justice, the appropriate legal venue for these types of activities. Of course Oliver North was convicted of lying to congress and even did some prison time for his part in the fiasco.
The salient question asked by Mike Brownfield is "where is the media in the fast and furious case."
Well I can answer that, they are chanting the mantra that Fox News isn't fair or balanced; that the Heritage Foundation isn't credible and that Obama and Holder are saints.
The press have really missed the point here. Agencies of the US Government were involved in the sale and importation of arms into a friendly foreign country for the use by criminals to commit crimes. This is an act forbidden by international law and certainly warrants a more robust inquiry. Seriously, are we to allow DOJ to handle this matter internally and not even report the efforts by The government Oversight Committeemen to do their jobs? Instead the New York Times does a hit piece on Senator Issa, the head of the committee.

    27. Frank25 says:

This does not pass smell test. U.S. Government officials knew illegal trade existed across borders with another country, and actually facilitated it without approval from President, Congress, and Cabinet Officials. Wars between countries have been fought over lessor stuff in earlier years. I just do not believe ATF official (acting director) would make any such decisions on his own, or that other officials would cooperate without notifying their superiors. Definitely into and through Eric Holder and into White House itself. This is not the transparent government campaigned for. And this needs much higher officials in the witness chair. Not a Republican-Democrat issue. Honesty in Government, not putting our citizens in danger for hair-brained projects.

    28. Duelles says:

The coverup! It will bite Holder in the butt – It is the dog that hunts.

    29. toledofan says:

Great article and, again, where's the mainstream media? When you put this into real world context not only was this a bad idea; the weapons were used against American lawmen, and it sounds like we actually don't know where these all went to. When you compare this to the Iran Contra scandal, this one is far worse. I think that every Congress person should be held to account on this and they should be busting down the doors at the DOJ to find who was involved, the extent and who goes to jail.

    30. J Miller says:

Just more of the Obama administration at the behest of the Muslim world and George Soros goal of destroying America. Citizens, come to your senses and throw them all out election day or we won't have an America, the greatest nation ever conceived.

    31. Kelly Crist says:

Not only is it time for more answers, it is time for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate ans start charging these people with felony indictments. I will not accept the mere "reshuflfeing of the deck" as the be all, end all to this mess. People need to go to federal prison. When I read headlines like Dick Cheney being worried about being prosecuted, where is the equal application of the law? I personally feel this was a "gin up more gun control" scheme gone completely out of control. Thankfully, the NRA and other pro gun groups will not let this go. All law-abiding Americans need to put the full court press on their Congressmen and Senators.

    32. Steven Coy says:

We the People should Demand our Congress to Remove Obamanation from Office, he has not shown proof of legal Constitutional eligilability to be President, McCain had to prove his Citizenship when he ran for President. If the Congress won't do it then we the People better do it for them by marching on Washington (The New U.S.S.R.) and removing them all.

    33. JOSEPH FRROM JERSEY says:

This was another way for the government to try and come after our weapons….But as usual they screwed up..everyone who had knowledge and who participated in the boondogle should be arrested and held for treason against the american people..This should go to the top because the attorney general who has the ear of the pres.and no matter what they say(denial) they surely knew about the plan to turn this around on the ones who sold the weapons legally…and since when do the pres. attrny/ gen. head of the fbi atf and local official in the know are above the law…….This administration has to be stopped what they are doing is aidieing and abetting the law breaking persons coming into this country and also they are aloowing the drug cartels of mexico to profit in ways that you and I are paying the price….arrest the bunch now and stop waliking on egg shells and get the intestinal fortitude and do it now…Just one mans opinion

    34. Tony Bunn says:

      Agreed.

    35. Clearhead says:

MY attorney general? MY ATTORNEY GENERAL??? Well how about sending YOUR attorney general to GITMO and bring the UNITED STATES ATTORNEY GENERAL to task? That will never happen of course, The idea is 'WAY too logical. (Just think of all the electricity and time that could be saved if somehow we could eliminate all the first person personal pronouns from obama's teleprompter. For that matter, Holder's vocabulary also………as in "MY people").

    36. Cravczec says:

This is more serious than Watergate. The President, AG, DOJ and ATF were trying to boost the number of guns being sold in Mexico in order to enhance their anti gun agenda. They have already put onerous regulations on border state gun shop owners because of this conspiracy. The ATF is notoriously anti anybody having guns but them.

    37. Felipe says:

This entire fiasco wasn't hatched in a vacuum. No one has spoken about the role of the US State Department in this ill-conceived operation. Any military or law enforcement operation that goes beyond our borders is also coordinated withe the US State Dept and that of the other country. Thus far, the US State dept has flown under the radar. The US AG's Office is in it up to their neckties.
Fast & Furious was an attempt by the Obama administration to "set the table" for a crisis so that Obama could make good on his pledge, of which he openly spoke about, to sign onto a treaty with Mexico's Presidente Calderon, which sharply curtails the 2nd Amendment rights of US citizens. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in a separate approach, has said that the US would sign onto a United Nations treaty that bans private ownership and possession of firearms. A double-barreled approach if you will. So, where's the call for a Special Prosecutor and a Federal Grand Jury? This goes right to the desk of the President.

    38. Barbara says:

Basd on the general, open-to-interpretation comments from Carney and the President I'd say the White house knew about this dumb Fast and Furious Operation. The media isn't doing its job in this criminal matter.

    39. Aqualung says:

I believe counting the recent violence in Mexico more than one life has been taken……

    40. Keith says:

Why was it not suggested in this article that Holder should be fired and also his actions or inaction should be investigated, with criminal prosecution in mind. I have seen notes regarding this since the very beginning laying the blame at his door. I would also suggest that for the security of our country, his boss should be suspended and investigated by the highest authorities. Oops!!!! He is the highest Authority in his mind. Anyway it would be no loss to have our so called leader arrested for crimes against USA.

    41. JDB says:

They don't dare just fire them. They reassigned them so they can make them keep quiet. If they had fired them, then they could have spilled the beans on who knew when, what and where as part of a deal. Just another facet of covering it up. There are those that say this plan was brought into affect so that the OBama administration could start calling for stricter gun controls and maybe make it stick by "proving" that guns come from the US that the drug lords use to commit murders.

    42. Lloyd Scallan says:

Does anyone realize the total naiveté of the bunch that is conducting the so-called investigation. Sen. Charles Grassley cut a deal with Eric Holder. In exchange for his (Holder's) FULL testimony in front of the Committee, Grassley would vote to approve one of Holders nominee to serve in the DOJ. After Grassley vote to approve, Holder regened on the deal when he deliberately held back answers to direct questioning by committee members.

What so appalling is first, Grassely voted to install another leftist into Holders DOJ, that he (Grassely) would not have otherwise approved. Second, the absolute stupididy of Grassely to believe Holder would honor his commitment to his part of the deal. How do we, the citizens of this country, expect the true facts of this investigation, when those like Grassely, who is actually running the investigation, are so blind that they cannot understand that this entire Obama administration and Holder's DOJ have no honor. They do not tell the the truth. They will not cooperate with any person or committee that could expose their agenda. How can a sitting Senator be so incompetent as to think that this bunch of socialist will ever be honest.

    43. June says:

Holder has to go and the investigation must continue until we have all the answers. No one would try this "experiment" unless it was authorized by someone high up the chain. The death of the agents is nothing less than murder and should be charged and tried as such. Holder had to have known about this and did Obama?

    45. T. Howe says:

What next – an executive order making Holder unaware?

    46. Anne White says:

There is a paper trail somewhere in all this mess. The president's signature has to be on some document. And Holder's files (if not "lost"0 have to show te record of orders, etc. Congress should demand and force answers since that is their job. Each senator and representative should be given notice that their constitutients are demanding answers- not form letters as replies. The "tide" is rising.

    47. June says:

We need to keep hounding the media for not reporting the real news. Where are the investgating reporters that used to bring out the truth? Why aren't they doing their jobs instead of slobbering over this corrupt administration? Who is going to believe them if they don't stand up and do their jobs? They don't really have the right to call themselves reporters unless they do their jobs. Of course their bosses have to be held accountable at the same time.

    48. B, L. Johnson says:

Maybe I missed something but I THINK in order to sell guns of any kind a person needs a Federal Firearms
License?? So first of all WHO in our federal gov. has a license to sell let alone transfer any weapons???So
this being what it seems, the people behind this have committed a felony and it is punishable by prison time.
As stated above Treason is also a crime and they should be tried for that. Lets get these low life self serving
      Cruds out of our gov.

    49. Melvin says:

I'd waterboard them……… maybe then we would really discover WHO knew WHAT and WHEN

    50. Richard Dawson says:

Don't let up on this. We need to demand that a full investigation go forward and those involved must be punished to the full extent of the law, not just transfer to another job. Lives have been lost because of this disgraceful act and the criminals must be punished.

    51. Daniel says:

"The ATF sold guns to criminals in Mexico, a life has been taken, and crimes have been committed with the weapons that were trafficked by the federal government." Hang on a second! There has only been "a life" taken that we know of. We do not know how many innocent lives south of the border that have been terrorized, maimed, or killed by these weapons. This administration is absolutely reckless. Under any other leadership there would be heads rolling. If there is not a double standard here then Iran-Contra never happened.

    52. YourDaddy says:

Holder & Obama have a lot to lose.
Don't be surprised if ATF's Kenneth Melson pulls a Vince Foster in the middle of the night.

    53. Jay MacDonald says:

Mike, this is a good summary column. BUT, I must quibble with several statements, which you must get right in your further reporting:
      1. ATF does not sell guns. They approve the sale of guns by firearms dealers to persons they deem as legal to own firearms. In this case, they encouraged and approved sales to straw buyers that many dealers knew were fraudulent and had specifically objected about. They also told their field agents to not follow up on these sales.
      2. Fast & Furious is not a "botched" operation. It went exactly as planned by ATF and by their master at DOJ, Phoenix US Attorney Dennis Burke. The only botching that occurred was that they got caught.

You are correct that a cover-up is going on. This scandal is at least as big as Watergate, and it should end the careers of many at DOJ, ATF, FBI, and Homeland Security. Instead the Administration is practicing "plausible deniability" by moving people around and giving them safe jobs as, probably, bribes for their continued silence. It is all disgusting.

    54. Chuck Yahn says:

Much like Obama, Holder has screws up about everyyhing he is close to and blames the continuous blunders on others. He needs to go now, 18 more months of him is unthinkable.

    55. L. J. Johns says:

With coming elections, the sewage in the US, from Obama on down, needs to be flushed! Pressure needs to begin for Holder to be immediately fired. Transferes?? Each needs to be fired! Lois J

    56. T in STL says:

The was not a "botched operation." Based on what I've read and heard about it coupled with the general anti-gun stance of the entire administration from the President on down, I believe Fast & Furious functioned exactly as planned. Even the murder of Agent Terry was a predictable and acknowledged risk of the plan (evidence one of the BATFE managers quoted by CBS to have said "If you're going to make an omlette, you have to break some eggs."). I believe the intent was to put guns in the hands of Mexican drug gangs so that the Obama administration, could justify new restrictions on American gun owners. The Obama administration sought to use this story line in the past by quoting trumped up statistics they said proved that guns were flowing from the U.S. to Mexico. When their numbers were disproven, they were driven to find a way to make them real. The result was Fast & Furious. Not only should culpability be established and careers ended, those responsible for the operation should be put on trial as accessories to the murder of Agent Terry. Fast & Furious is today's Watergate but we're too accustomed to the misdeeds of our politicians to see it that way.

    57. B Eric says:

I for one am getting very tired of this President , strike that, Dictator! Ok I will proove it. Congress rejects Cap and Trade so obams thru the EPA issues new regulations which implements all the provions. Congress rejects the Dream Act so obomba signs an executive order setting up a simllar plan. All of the so called Czars act without congressional oversight. I could go on and on but to tell the truth it's too painful. O I forgot the Health Care Plan which gives government the righ to force anyone to buy anything or pay a fine. Also establishes the IPAB which can determine who gets care and who doesn't as well as what the provider gets paid(sounds like a Death Panel to me). That enough proof for you?

    58. Marina Bundrick says:

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) please no stop until you find those responsible.

    59. azwayne says:

Is the nation of sheeple going to read, watch, and let this corrupt regime continue???? Demand your representatives respond to you, then get ready if we don't have responsible Congress, it is time for CHANGE.

    60. Mothergoose says:

Does "transparent" mean you can see thru the answers? Keep pressing! i like this and other fairy tales.

    61. jean says:

What ever happened to the transparent government he promised?! If Bush was in office, this would have been all over the news! It's really a sad situation this was allowed to happen and the death of an American border agent, who was doing HIS job, is a real tragedy. Something must be done to hold those responsible.

    62. ThomNJ says:

"…a life has been taken, and crimes have been committed with the weapons that were trafficked by the federal government…"

Left unsaid in this is the Rules of Engagement for our Border Patrol (and similarly for our fighting men and women overseas). Even with as blazingly stupid as this Fast and Furious plan was, Agent Terry might still be alive if he had not been forced by absurd ROE to engage armed bad guys with a damn beanbag gun.

Just why is our government so damn worried about politically correct rules that are clearly not reciprocated and NEVER WILL BE by the taliban, al qaeda, drug smugglers, etc? The politicians and bureaucrats who push these rules need to go out with the Border Patrol in dangerous situations – they need to go to Afghanistan on patrol in dangerous situations – with NO weapons and depend upon a Border Patrol agent armed with a bean bag gun or a soldier forced to walk patrol with an unloaded weapon.

    63. Bobbie says:

how can plans that involve LETHAL WEAPONS that induce extensive potentials of going wrong be conducted without the president's knowledge? "serious mistake" to be truthful under Obama. Serious incompetence and necessary reason to impeach. This was a set-up to guilt or fear America into government action/dependency/control! No persons of any nation deserves inherent deception from government -people are obligated to trust but are belittled to reckless treatment leading to inexcusable death and excuses of government authority.

No punishment to the truth tellers who've attempted to stop this death trap! just to those dismissing the truth tellers and those directly involved in this fast and furious promotion…

    64. Linette says:

It's very telling that Mr. Obama uses the phrase "My Attorney General…" . He's not "your" Attorney General. He's the "Attorney General of the United States of America" and therefore his boss is We the People and should represent the people of the United States, not the President.

    65. Ernest King says:

I have read all the comments to this article and found none that saw through the smoke and mirrors to the
truth. The entire purpose of this action was to blame everything on American gun owners and the Second
amendment. All the coverup coverage is attempting to say the initial project had a legitimate objective, but
it is so obviously a gun banner attempt to discredit legal gun owners. The totalitarians have not changed
goals since Mao said," all power comes from the barrel of a gun." So take away a free persons gun and you
      have taken away their power.

    66. Ron W. Smith says:

Operation Fast and Furious–quite a story of governmental "action" gone astray and with pretty unfortunate consequence.
What about "Slow and Tedious," though? That almost forgotten but still very costly story of governmental action, ineffective from the start, is a chapter in U. S. history that has cost tens of thousands of lives and continues to cost them at an alarming rate. I'm talking about our "war on drugs" and the price everyday Mexicans are paying for our combination of failed strategy and congressional inaction. The slaughter in Mexico is off most Americans' radar except when revived occasionally by such failed intentions as "Fast and Furious."
It is important to remember that we're the cause of the problem Mexico has with drug cartels. The cartels are filling a need across Mexico's northern border and don't want interference with their lucrative business. We solve the drugs problem in this country, the cartels lose their pipeline to riches, Mexicans sleep easier for the first time, and we finally can begin repairing the damage to our psyches guilt has accomplished.
Of course, there are those who say the problem in Mexico isn't ours, it's theirs. It's important to walk in Mexicans' shoes before pinning the tail of blame on Mexicans. Poverty promotes doing what has to be done for survival as sure as ready money promotes the need for more and conduct to fit.
What's been done to Mexico by our failures in "the war on drugs" is nothing short of criminal. We've disallowed every real solution in favor of costly and ineffective ones like criminalization of users, pushers, and producers. Legalize drugs and treat them like controlled substances, and a legal market will follow, free of criminal elements and essentially manageable the way liquor sales have been ever since the removal of that notorious Constitutional amendment prohibiting alcohol.
For whatever reasons, when we hear our "national interests" being discussed, the problem with current drugs policy in this country and the horrendous problems of our neighbors to the south never hits the top 5 list.
Yes, the United States is an exceptional nation–except when certain seldom-talked-about details are brought into the discussion. Exceptional except, in other words.

    67. gary sheldon says:

The BATFE is aggressively pursuing the death of the 2nd Amendment and should be eliminated from any Congressional budget consideration.

Why does obama even have a press secretary? All he does is perpetuate the dictator's lies and BS and tells U.S. and reporters it is sugar.

    68. carol,az says:

Yes, " the scandal continues" but a few facts to highlight your summary.
The reassignment of four W.. Blowers from AZ, to out-of-state positions and the re-assignment of Melson, we all assume, was granted a job, for his silence.
To state that, " the Pres. should take this seriously" is beyond sophomoric.
It's now up to Issa to hold the pigs feet to the fire, until Holder squeals or not.
Is that clear enough for you, since you stated that the American people should still be "concern" over this issue. OR are we all so use of the injustice from the DOJ, we no longer can differentiate between cover-up and the truth?. Maybe that's the back story, but you decide.

    69. rick says:

I don't believe for a minute that fast and furious was intended to trace drug cartels in Mexico. It was a back door public relations move. The obama administration needs public support to ratify the small arms treaty before the UN and to get congress to ban semi automatic weapons.

    70. ActinUpinTexas says:

This President….. This Administration…. This band of merry liberal knuckle draging morons need to be put behind bars. Every single thing that Democrats have touched has the oposite effect of the Midas touch, in their case everything they touch degrades to a pile of rubble.

We will never get justice served by DOJ Holder…. Not when it is he who has his hand up to his ears in the proverbial cookie jar. This administration will be historicaly recalled as a failure on every single front.

    71. Minuteman55 says:

The government officials shouldn't be just fired or allowed to resign or reassigned, they need to all be prosecuted. I am sure this will not happen while this president is in power. The Tea Party and the NRA need to call for a boycott of all the major media that refuse to tell the truth about this travesty to the Amerian People. Where is 60 minutes? Where are the rest of the media investigators? If this was under a Republican administration they would be all over it. You would think the they were assesories to murder or something.

    72. LibertyAtStake says:

"[BHO] then deflected further questions by citing an “ongoing investigation.” "

This sentence will take on a different meaning when the subpoenas are issued …

“Because the Only Good Progressive is a Failed Progressive”

    73. Al Connelly says:

How can be surprised that the President pleads "no Knowledge"? This is the most dangerous politician this country has ever seen. He refuses to take or allow actions to protect this country from illegal immigration especially as concerns Mexico and his recent act to require investigation into 300,000 convicted criminals that were scheduled for deportation. He obviously is in dire need of illegal immigrant and legal Hispanic votes and will continue to put his political aspirations ahead of the american public needs.

    74. Roger1 says:

How much longer can obama and Holder hide and where are the democraps and Republicans who should be all over this. Business as usual under the most corrupt administration in History in my opinion

    75. Jeff Dover says:

Yes, it's way past time for more answers from the White House. We might also ask the White House to tell us what became of $25 million that went to Seattle for "home weatherization". I believe that 14 people were hired and only 7 homes "weatherized".

Where's the money? Let's get an answer now.

    76. Rose Johnson says:

And what about the field supervisors who were granted promotions….Promotions! They were an active part of this fiasco and they were promoted? At least Senator Cornyn is asking this question, why isn't there a unified question coming from Congress? Maybe I am misinformed, but I thought whistleblowers were protected, why did agent Cefalu have to resign? This entire situation "stinks".

    77. Paddyo says:

LET'S HOPE THEY NEVER WANT TO FIND OUT WHERE NUCLEAR WEAPONS MIGHT END UP!

They also told their field agents to not follow up on these sales and to let the guns "walk."
      2. Fast & Furious is not a "botched" operation. It went exactly as planned by Phoenix ATF and by their master at DOJ, Phoenix US Attorney Dennis Burke. The only botching that occurred was that they got caught doing something really stupid.
      3. Besides the two agents we know have died, it is probable that many (hundreds?) Mexican citizens have died as a result of these guns getting to Mexico. Other lives ruined will likely be more ATF field agents, who will be retaliated against, as per ATF culture.

You are correct that a cover-up is going on. This scandal is at least as big as Watergate, and it should end the careers of many at DOJ, ATF, FBI, and Homeland Security. Instead, the Administration is creating deniability by moving people around and giving them safe jobs probably in exchange for their continued silence. It is all disgusting.

    79. Armin Feger says:

And the only reason that this gun-trafficing story isn't a top of the fold newspaper and TV news story, a la Watergate, Valerie Plame, et al story is because the Main Stream Media is in the tank with the Democrats and Obama. Had this very same story come out during the President G.W. Bush administration, there'd be headline news, calls for impeachment, Ashcroft would have been fired and probably on trial, all kinds of Senate and House hearings (all televised), and hundreds of "investigations" by every news outlet in the country.

    80. Rich in Illinois says:

So, the whole false flag operation on our southern border staged to scare the hell out of everyone with daily demilitarized zone news and the rape trees and kidnappings is now being chocked up as an oops by the b.a.t.f.? Are we supposed to believe that this was all just the federalies and cartel's version of burning man on the border? Give me a break, this government has become the enemy of the people… all people, and anyone who does business with or takes a single entitlement from the government enables it. What's so hard to understand about this? The cold war with the government is over, it's time to pick a side. And furthermore, for all those people who think the current shenanigans can be chalked up to the party in power… Your party is only the opposing team when they entertain us with the scrimmage matches you call elections.

    81. Sally says:

The people of this country should be totally outraged that this not only happened but that the people responsible have only been reassigned not fired. I did not read that their new positions would be at a higher salary but isn't that the way it usually works?

    82. John Stewart says:

This is becoming a typical amateur hour event for this administration. I have no idea how far up the chain of command this fiasco went, I have my opinion. But even a private in the armed service has the right to refuse an order if it is basically illegal and idiotic. Someone in this chain of events should have screamed bloody murder at this foolish and deadly game they thought the would play at.

    83. John Stewart says:

Someone knew at the outset that this was a bad game to undrtake, these illegal arms dealers are not stupid.

    84. John Stewart says:

This fiasco calls for more than resignations, no matter where it leads.

    85. John Stewart says:

Ignorance has its fingerprints all over this so called plan.

    86. C. Huey says:

What a slight of hand comment. For that matter, nor would Pee Wee Herman have authorized the selling of guns into Mexico. This little event stinks to high heaven. Truth be known this was nothing but a ruse to further push gun control. Don't you find it ironic that a philosophy that proclaims everything it can to control guns gets caught selling them. And, selling them to criminals. Beautiful. Only glitch, they never planned on one of our own agents being murdered with one of the weapons. If the DOJ wants to track down drug dealers, follow the money not the guns. Or buy a lawn chair and watch the drugs as they walk across the border.

    87. Rose Ann King says:

Let's keep this pot boiling! At some point the rest of American will wake up to what's going on. The Administration may want it over and done with…but that's not going to happen. Keep it going & thanks for all your efforst.

    88. Helping a neighbor says:

Thinking that "ANYTHING" will be done, other than giving the boss a new office is laughable. Does anybody think the president really cares about the death of some lowley officer doing his job. This would just be a bit of news he would have to endure while on vacation.

    89. DirectorBNI says:

There are several inaccuracies in this article..ATF Special Agent Vince Cefalu was not forced to resign, but has been given no duties and suspended..He is still an ATF Agent!..
U.S. Attorney of the Phoenix Arizona office Dennis Burke resigned because his testimony to the Congressional Oversight Committee was supposed to be kept quiet until another set of hearings took place, due to the fact that he rolled over on Eric Holder and Obama as well as others within the DOJ..His testimony was leaked to the press and I suspect to the Obama administration by a democrat on the Oversight Committee…Dennis was supposed to remain in his position until later on unless his testimony was leaked..which unfortunately it was…The House Congressional Oversight Committee has a mole and this needs to be investigated as well…

    90. Brenda says:

This Administration's lack of concern and involvement is unbelieveable..He will go down in history as the "Teflon President". Nothing sticks to him. I'm sure somewhere in here it is George Bush's fault or the Tea Party or the Terrorist Republicans..What in heaven's name is wrong with people? News media has no scruples. None of his gaffes are ever reported or investigated..no one dares. I am sick of it. His actions and the actions of his cronies are unconscionable..

      WHAT WILL YOU DO????

      WHAT WILL YOU DO?

      What will YOU do……..

    93. Denver says:

This is Obama's Watergate and some media group needs to make certain that it gets that much attention. If it can be proved that the Pres. knew and approved of this disgraceful effort against the second ammendment it is an impeachable act. It was also an assault on national sovereignty.

    94. Norman BenEzra says:

Get Eric Holder in front of a Congressionlal Committee under oath. Let him face jail time if holds back on the truth. It's impossibel that both he and his boss were unaware of Fast and Furious.

    95. This was Holder and Obama's botched scheme to gut the second amendment by flooding guns into Mexico and claiming it couldn't be controlled. If you recall they and the there lackeys in the media were beating that drum almost on a daily basis while it was going on. It never had anything to do with tracking guns or cartels. It amounts to high crimes and misdemeanors and fits Chicago Politics to a tee. Furthermore the silence from the mainstream media on this theory is deafening.

    96. 1775 Concord says:

      1. Obama refuses to protect American citizens by stopping illegal immigration.
      2. Obama wants to make illegals "legal," as potential/undocumented Democrats.
      3. Arizona passes laws to protect itself, as Obama will not.
      4. Obama/Holder sues Arizona for trying to protect itself, which Obama/Holder is a failure at doing.
      5. Obama/Holder sells guns to illegals so that they may kill Americans more easily.
      6. Jay Carney? He lies every time he opens his mouth. He speaks fabricated and untrue stories every day. His anti-truth rhetoric is disgusting.

    97. kyle says:

The coverup proceeds in earnest! So when, if ever, will we learn the truth of this tragedy, and Eric finally be impeached?

    98. James Snyder says:

If you want more answers from this administration, ask tthe ouestions with a telepromter.

    99. Powdermonkey says:

All/most of the posters here seem to be on track re the full investigation by Congress that would surely result in the firing of AG Eric Holder, or at the very least bring it to the attention of the American people (well…maybe. The media would not be too willing to participate). I would encourage all of you to write your reps, demanding that they participate fully in any investigation, and that you contact Darrell Issa and give him your support. No one else is going to do it, and so far, it appears that he may be the only one to prove that Obama's promise of "transparency" was just another lie.

    100. rudi says:

perhaps if the president spent more time on the job he would know what is going on ,or does he care?

    101. Betsy Ross says:

Nixon's Watergate scandal was a picnic compared to this and it brought him down! So what is preventing this F/F from bringing down the Obama administration? The media, that;'s what!! Pravda and Izvestia were less loyal to the Soviets than ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, WP are to Obama and his leftist agenda. Shame on all of them for not informing the rest of the country what we, who are paying attention, know. The next election, if it is not "stolen", will allow WE THE PEOPLE to clean house.

    102. Dr. Henry Sinopoli says:

In any other administraton Eric Holder would be in jail.

    103. Barbara G. says:

The psychopathic lying of this administration continues. Not only was there blatant disregard for safety, there was little regard for human life. No one will be punished for the slaughter of the U.S. Border Patrol officer. The scapegoats will drop like flies, but no one will be charged with any crime. And the Attorney General whom the President calls "My" Attorney General, is the Attorney General of the United States. He is not the President's personal Attorney General. He answers to the American legal citizens. But he has demonstrated more than once that he is incapable of answering to Americans nor has he shown that he is capable of accepting responsiblity, especially in the Fast and Furious operation and a yound life lost because of it.

    104. ckirkland says:

How do they get away with so much?? Are they beyond the law??? Where are the Republicans out there screaming and shouting for Holder to resign? CK

    105. RME KRNL says:

    107. betsy white says:

Who will the Democrats put up to run for president when the American people discover the huge coverup that is the scandal of fast and furious, and we thought the Supreme Court throwing out most or all of the health care bill would be the big thing. From now to November should be very interesting for the Obama administration. Their worst nightmares are on the horizon. It has been said that Watergate looks like child's play compared to the fast and furious scandal, which ended up with two people dead. When they invoked executive privilege everyone will be investigating the shananigans of the Obama administration. It will be big news from now on.They really blew it. We all know what happened to Nixon and his people. It is not the crime, but the coverup that always gets you.

    108. Bruce G. says:

I don't even know where to begin. This whole 2nd Amendment thing is out of control! Because a sting operation between the ATF and the Mexican Government to get to the cartels goes awry, our 2nd Amendment rights are in jeopardy? That's a stretch! Gangs and criminals everywhere have access to unlimited amounts of weapons, even more than our police forces (which is why so many law enforcement officers are retiring early). And American citizens are not allowed to own a hand gun? Just another example of liberalism and governmental control designed to make us weak and unable to defend ourselves should we find ourselves in a threatening situation. Should we tell an armed home invader to wait for the police to arrive? An entire family can be eliminated in a matter of seconds. At least with a weapon, we have a fighting chance.
