  • Top HHS Official Likens Obamacare to Civil Rights Act

A top advisor to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently compared opposition to the administration’s new health care law to opposition to the 1960s civil rights movement, Politico Pro reported:

Jay Angoff, special adviser to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, drew parallels between the two contentious efforts during a panel presentation in Baltimore. He said pushback from state governors over implementation of the law mirrors the acrimony held by many state lawmakers decades earlier when they had to adopt the civil rights package.

“The states fought the civil rights bill,” he said. “When we see some of the opposition to this law, we really ought to go back and remember the opposition to the civil rights law in the ’60s to see what we’ve come through and to see that the fight’s worth it.”

The comments were made Monday at a briefing with health care providers organized by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.).

“I don’t want to say that the health care law is as important as the civil rights law,” Angoff said. “But there really are some analogies.”

It is telling that the comments came on the same day that the Kaiser Family Foundation released a poll showing that Americans disapprove of the law by a 44/39 margin. Rasmussen’s tracking poll, meanwhile, shows that 57 percent of Americans favor repealing the law. Only 37 percent, according to the poll, want it to remain on the books.

If Angoff’s statement inflates an unpopular, ineffective federal entitlement, it also debases a movement focused on granting core liberties to all Americans. That he would conflate the two speaks volumes about this administration’s flawed conception of “rights.”

whoever represents Americans that isn't in opposition to this unconstitutional mandate is drawn to it's corruption then our protection from it's force. obamacare denies civil rights of a person to conduct their livelihoods freely without government intervention imposing health regulations.

the government complains about the costs as if it was always their responsibility? that of course they've proven incompetent, but avoids to share the fact that it would be at no government costs if everyone took the responsibilities of their own expenses. mandate the expense of individual livelihoods be at the individuals expense!

obamacare is more liken to remove or replace civil rights THEN LIKEN TO ANYTHING ELSE!!

This insidious argument should be taken on immediately and loudly by conservative leaders bold enough to point out the fact that DEMOCRAT Governors, senators (like Al Gore Sr.), and congressmen opposed the 1960s' Civil Rights Act in order to DENY rights to a minority.
Those who currently oppose the president's health care plan do so in order to PROTECT the rights of all, including minorities.
It is time for conservatives to take a stand for truth and to not look the other way when democrats blatantly rewrite historical fact for political gain.

    2. George says:

According to the progressives, we have a right to be "free from want." The problem is, this subordinates another's right to their life property pursuit of happiness to make sure that everyone is free from wanting a plasma tv, beach front house, super car. This is certainly a flawed conception of "rights."

    3. Is Kathleen Sebelius for real ?

    4. @pjcostello says:

This administration considers something to be a 'right' only if they have deigned to grant it to you; otherwise, sit down, shut up, and eat your peas.

    5. Tim AZ says:

All these socialists have left to defend their policies is to accuse any and all who appose their policies with the excuse that rejection of socialism is deeply rooted in racism. The good news is this strategy is tired and warn out, falling on the deaf ears of those Americans that choose freedom over servitude and perpetual debt.

    6. Lloyd Scallan says:

Yea, look what the "civil rights act" go us.

    7. commonsense247 says:

what a ridiculous, flawed line of thought.. that argument can be made for whatever anyone desires to inflict, support, oppress, or enact.

    8. Michael Wise says:

Hahahaha. Laughing at stupid things liberals say.

    9. Mike, Wichita Falls says:

It sounds like Obamacare's proponents are getting pretty desperate if they have to play that card. All it takes to right this country is an informed citizenry…and politicians with the will to repeal the bad laws and enact the good ones. Repeal Obamacare!

    10. West Texan says:

Talk about a contrived comparison. The civil rights movement recognized freely inherited natural rights. It had absolutely nothing to do with undermining federalism.

    11. marcustullius says:

My, that is the same line Al Gore is using for global warming. Are they reading from the same play book?

    12. West Texan says:

PS: Today's far left progressive sings the socialist mantra. The recent popularity of “Che” Guevara apparel tells all. To these social justice gurus, everyone has an absolute right to tax supported public services like personal police protection, higher education, comprehensive healthcare, free housing and anything else that fits their oversimplified world. The grander and more powerful government is over people‘s personal affairs, the better for these leftist wing nuts. Such are Obama’s enraptured supporters.

    13. Drew fm Downey says:

This is what you can expect from "the credentialed elite".
Now, if we can only get back to being served by those who are edumacated.
      What a Maroon!

    14. Lee_Fox says:

America went through significant pain to expunge racist laws that were keeping minorities 'in their place' and to empower minorities with the rights that were being denied them.

Now, the left wants to compare that righteous struggle with their insidious, incremental enslavement of doctors?

    15. Steve Yates says:

      Steve from Central Georgia
If this freight train of entitlement status isn't stopped soon, we may not have a shining city to even dream about. Democrats have one goal and one goal only. Incite as much animosity between the classes and keep dumming the dummer down. And that's all I got to say about that.
