Washington in a Flash: Will Congress Cut, Cap and Balance?

Sen. Jim DeMint [2] (R-SC) visits Heritage today for The Bloggers Briefing. He will be discussing his new book, “The Great American Awakening: Two Years That Changed America, Washington, and Me [3],” which highlights the birth of the Tea Party. He will be joined by American Legislative Exchange Council [4] Senior Director for Public Affairs Raegan Weber and Tax & Fiscal Policy Director Jonathan Williams. Listen to the podcast on BlogTalkRadio [5] or Ustream.tv [6]. It starts at noon ET.

One topic likely to come during DeMint’s visit is Cut, Cap and Balance [7] — the conservative budget proposal up for a vote in the House today. The bill [8] would make substantial cuts in spending, implement an enforceable spending cap and balance the budget. With a veto threat from President Obama and less support in the Senate, it’s fate is uncertain.

Heritage is hosting two noteworthy events today. First, the Military Voting Rights Conference will examine the obstacles overseas servicemen face in obtaining and returning ballots for elections. The conference will feature opening remarks from Edwin Meese III, Ronald Reagan distinguished fellow in public policy and chairman of the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, and a keynote address by Sen. John Cornyn [9] (R-TX). It runs 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET. Watch it live online [10].

The Centennial of the 1911 Revolution is a significant milestone for Hong Kong. Alan Leong Kah-kit [11], member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, will discuss what the turning point means for the future of political and civil society in Hong Kong and China. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. ET. [12]
