  • U.S. Embassy Attack Exposes Obama Administration’s Failed Syria Policy

Monday’s attack on the U.S. Embassy in Damascus—by a mob orchestrated by the Syrian government—underscores the abject failure of the Obama Administration’s strategy of engaging the brutal Bashar al-Assad regime.

The Administration naively sought to upgrade diplomatic contacts with the Syrian dictatorship after abandoning the Bush Administration’s policy of mobilizing international pressure on Syria to halt its support of terrorist groups that murdered civilians in Lebanon, Israel, and Iraq, as well as U.S. troops in Iraq. It reversed the Bush Administration’s 2005 withdrawal of the U.S. ambassador to Syria following the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who courageously opposed Syrian domination of Lebanon. When Congress balked at confirming a new ambassador, the White House did an end run around it last December by appointing Robert Ford as the new ambassador while Congress was out of session.

After the “Arab Spring” brought pro-democracy demonstrations to Syria that were violently repressed by the regime, the Obama Administration was slow to criticize the Assad regime, which it hoped to draw into peace talks with Israel. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton even appeared to defend President Assad in an embarrassing March 27 interview in which she said, “There’s a different leader in Syria now. Many of the Members of Congress of both parties who have gone to Syria in recent months have said they believe he’s a reformer.”

Clinton at last appears to be wising up about the nature of the Assad regime, which has ruthlessly ruled Syria and killed tens of thousands of Syrians since Bashar’s father, Hafez al-Assad, seized power in a 1970 coup. On Monday, Clinton showed signs of finally abandoning her wishful thinking, weakly opining that “From our perspective, he has lost legitimacy,” marking the first time the Administration has called into question the dictator’s right to rule.

This is a small and belated step in the right direction, but the Administration has a long way to go to correct its ill-advised efforts to seek better relations with a gangster regime that has murdered more than 1,400 of its own citizens in the last four months; thrown more than 12,000 in jail; served as Iran’s chief ally in the Middle East; supported a wide array of terrorists against the U.S. and its allies; and conspired with North Korea (and probably Iran) to illegally build a nuclear reactor designed to produce fissile material for a nuclear weapon.

The collapse of the Obama Administration’s Syria policy is yet another example of how the Obama Doctrine has undermined U.S. national interests in a naïve effort to engage a despotic regime. Now that the Administration’s timid and weak policy toward Syria has emboldened the Assad regime to attack the U.S. embassy, it is time for President Obama—who has said surprisingly little about the serial massacres in Syria—to replace his myopic engagement strategy with meaningful efforts to help the Syrian people oust the predatory Assad regime.

I wonder what the true details to this story are? So simple to malign our president for outcomes that may have played out in other ways. The President has shown time and again that he's an intelligent thoughtful leader. The world is a very very complex puzzle. Of course if you're George Bush . . you simply declare a country has WMD and then manipulate data to support your assertion and then throw our nation into a massive ground assault that has no clear end-game and produces thousands of willing mini Osama Bin Ladens in the effort of so-called making us safer. Then you simply put the cost of the war(s) on a back burner and later charge the present administration of running up the debt. We've seen how the GOP tactfully deals with conflicts. . I'll take my medicine every time with the present administration.

Hey Jeff, if you think Obama is any different than Bush or has real interest in democrtizing Syria, you better listen up and do your homework. Obama is asking for an increase in the debt ceiling that is three times what we actually need. He has plans for a full on ground invasion in Libya right now. Remember, the President, at least the past several have nothing more than puppets doing the will of the One World order gang and Hiliary is part of it. You need to wise up. If you think for one minute that Obama does anything that is motivated by his love of America or because he is very wise then you are sadly misinformed and have been drinking too much koolaid.

One can only assume you have been asleep for the past three plus years like Rip Van Winkle!!! Certainly you have to be kidding, right? One thing that remains consistent is the fact that we can count on liberals to once again REFUSE to accept responsibility . . . if something turns out badly, like Syria, it must be the former President Bush's fault. Perhaps if you all spent more time LOOKING for real solutions instead of playing the blame game and the race card, our country wouldn't be in such terrible trouble, here AND abroad!!! And by the by, what EXACTLY was Big O's "clear end-game" for his invasion of Syria . . . better get ready to take some of that "medicine" that you brag about taking for the current President and his henchmen. Might want to hire a taste tester first to make sure what is in the cure isn't going to do you in!!!!

When Clinton let the people of Somalia down in "93" or "Blackhawk Down", that's when the mayhem that Bin Laden's began, U.S. Cole, embassy bombing's, planes blown up around the world, Afghanistan, Twin Towers, and more I can't remember.
Thank you ex president Clinton, for you showing the world what a coward you are, your the man that in December of 69 skipped your draft date and took off for England,
He bombed Cervia (sp) from 30,000 ft., his general blew up the Chinese Embassy.
Liberalism has been the most damaging thing to America and the world, especially in global problems, it doesn't allow people to become free, or even willing to assist those people's who are ruled by Tyrants, dictators and warlords, Liberalism is cowardliness!

    3. Slugger says:

You want the TRUE details of what really happened? Then you better not rely upon the President or his administration because ALL Americans know that this man and his spin machine wouldn't know the truth if it bit them in the butt!!!!!

    4. Carlos says:

The fact of the matter is that he is not a leader. We wanted to portray himself as a citizen of the world but the reality is that he does not know how to lead.
