  • Morning Bell: The Debt Is Not a Game, Mr. President

Well, President Obama asked for it. And last night he got it in grand fashion—a “clean vote” on raising the nation’s debt limit, free of any of the desperately needed spending cuts that Americans are demanding, conservatives support, but liberals abhor. And by a 318–97 margin, the House of Representatives shot down the President’s effort to authorize $2.4 trillion in additional borrowing by the federal government without condition.

The vote was introduced by the House Republican majority to send a message to the President in advance of their meeting today at the White House: There cannot be more borrowing and spending without significant spending cuts and reforms. But when asked yesterday about the vote, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney merely said, “It’s fine. It’s fine,” and assured reporters that President Obama will “definitely” win the debt limit fight. Meanwhile, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) decried the vote, calling it a “political charade” and a “30-second ad attack.” Rep. Hoyer and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) then joined Republicans and voted against President Obama’s wishes.

Unfortunately, all is not fine, this is not a game, and what the White House and congressional Democrats view as nettlesome roadblocks to the continued growth of government is a movement to at long last restore sanity to the federal government amid a fiscal crisis. And that movement is occurring in the utter vacuum of leadership centered at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

That failure to lead can be traced back to 2010, when the Democrat-controlled Congress did not pass a budget for the first time since current budget rules were put into place in 1974. And from there, a straight line can be drawn to last week, when the Senate voted 97–0 against President Obama’s fiscal year 2011 budget proposal. It is in this empty garden, left untended by leadership from the White House, that our federal government has been allowed to grow unchecked.

The federal government is borrowing 40 cents of every dollar it spends.  The accumulated national debt stands at nearly 70 percent of the country’s annual economic output, set to climb to 100 percent by the end of this decade. And according to some comparisons, the U.S. economy is already in worse shape than the stumbling economies of most European nations. But never fear: The President is holding a meeting with congressional Republicans today to “hear and listen to their ideas, their concerns.”

Mr. President, it’s not enough to simply “hear and listen.” Now is the time for you to lead the way in cutting spending and reforming government. Take the advice of more than 150 economists who authored a letter warning about the consequences of increasing spending without changes in the way government does business:

An increase in the national debt limit that is not accompanied by significant spending cuts and budget reforms would harm private-sector job growth and represent a tremendous setback in the effort to deal with our national debt.

And with yesterday’s vote, it’s clear that raising the debt limit without reforms is not an available option. The path forward should instead be one marked by substantial spending cuts designed to target our nation’s fiscal problems. Those cuts should be followed by crucial changes such as hard spending caps and entitlement reforms that would return the nation to fiscal sanity and keep it there. David S. Addington, Vice President for Domestic and Economic Policy at The Heritage Foundation, writes:

[T]the least acceptable outcome is for Congress to continue to raise the debt ceiling over and over, doing nothing to drive down federal spending and borrowing, and to pile trillions of dollars in debt upon the shoulders of America’s children and the generations to follow.”

While the White House warns that not raising the debt limit would be “calamitous,” “disastrous” and “catastrophic,” their end-of-days rhetoric is equally applicable to the present state of the nation’s fiscal course. In the absence of leadership from the President, conservatives in Congress have attempted to right the ship. It’s about time that the President get on board.

    1. Paul LaSalle, Aurora says:

The problem with the modern day politician is they throw around numbers as if they have no meaning. A billion here, a billion there, several hundred billion for this, a couple trillion dollars to our debt ceiling.

These clowns aren't treating this as numbers. A trillion is just a word to these guys and they do not have the capacity to understand the impact of the policies they want to ramrod down our throats. It's not a matter of if we'll default now, but when. Then what happens Mr. President? Do you even have a clue?

    2. Bette, NJ says:

Will we be able to survive until November, 2012 ? I am beginning to doubt it.

    3. Glynnda White, Orlan says:

For crying out loud! Everything the president wants to happen will absolutely result in the "Enc of the World!" if it's not passed! What ….is he chicken little????

Nancy Pelosi is coming up for election next year and this is the only reason she voted for the debt ceiling limit…..let us hope that enough people in her district have enough sense next year to vote her out ….

In the meantime, Go Republicans! Stand your ground and elections will go well next year. Heritage I congratulate your efforts to make these things public, have been watching news for 45 minutes, haven't seen the story of this particular vote yet…..very sad

      Glynnda

    4. Dave W. Provo. UT says:

If this a national game of chicken then the losers will be the tax payers for generations. Time for a real President to step up and bite the bullet. Sadly I haven't seen one for a while.

    5. Robert, North Richla says:

Welcome to the front! While I personally do not want to raise the debt limit, the math is an issue. I wish Heritage had been around when the House whiffed on all three spending resolutions – instead of cutting their promised $100 billion or Heritage's recommended $300 billion – which would have helped a lot. The vote was a sham. The republicans will cave and give Obama some ridiculous "10-year plan" with trillions of supposed cuts against the baseline (meaningless). We should not give more than $300 billion per vote – and only with dollar for dollar real cuts in FY2012 spending – PERIOD.

    6. Ron in Saint Cloud F says:

How much could we save by repealing Obamacare? Nobody talks about it. Everyone seems to be concentrating on cutting our hallowed institutions – Medicare and Social Security. Why isn't the repeal of Obamacare at the forefront of items to cut? Perhaps we could keep Medicare and Social Security intact if we would eliminate the waste and fraud in both programs and repeal Obamacare, a program no one wants anyway.

    7. ThomNJ says:

Unfortunately – even with the votes in the Senate and the House falling the right way – I firmly believe that the majority of folks in the Congress voted that way only to save their chances fro re-election, and not because it was the right thing to do. Until we get people who are there to represent their fellow citizens and to do what is best for America, we will never escape the power hungry and the-hell-with-the-constituents crowd that so populates the Congress now and the rest of our government.

Ken Jarvis, you must have missed the item about the AMA, only 15% of ALL doctors belong to the AMA, the doctors you saw with BHO DO NOT practice medicine, they are not the ones giving hands on care. I am a member of the medical proffession and have talked to many MD’s who do give care to both Medicare and Medicaid, without a hesitation they say tey will quit taking patients from either and some say they will give up their practices. You do not know what they must d now as far as paper work and Obama care will make it worse, even for nurses we did not go into the medical field to file papers, we went into it to give care to patients, I’d rather hold the hand of a dying patient then write about it on a paper. This is not about care, it’s about the gov’t. having control over your life and YES your death.

      ===

      Thanks, Jeanne

If the doctors YOU talked to, if they give up their practice,

      WHAT will they do?

    10. clarence swinney says:

      Enjoy!

BIG DIFFERENCES–SOCIALIST DEMOCRACIES VERSUS WALL STREET CORPOCRACY

They take care of the huge Middle Class. We did until 1980 and since then a huge Redistribution of Income-Wealth to top 10% especially top 0.1% the Ultra Rich outer space wealth

Germany has strong Unions of the working class. Their Unions are by Industry not individual companies.

Since 2000, we a have had a a mass transfer of jobs overseas by WSA(wall street of america). 2,300,000 during Bush years.

Multinational Corporations have made Record profits during our worst Recession!

Rich investors have made 1000 Million + incomes during a Great Recession as 8 million lost their jobs

Money Velocity in an economy is indicative of success. When a Home is built labor and materials use money to purchase many things. Our Velocity of money diminished. How? The Wall Street Rich used the money to Gamble. Yes! Las Vegas Type Gambling. Bet on events. I bed Red you net black. Money moved from one hand to another hand not mass movement in the economy. The World Derivative Gambling Casino had 600 Trillion in action all over the world..Greek officials say one big cause for their economic disaster was Wall Street Gambling. The Banks around the world had deposits transferred to Wall Street and other major Gaming Houses. .That flow of money did not build anything nor did it create jobs. It was not used to buy stocks which helped expand businesses and create jobs.

From 2002-2007 the Top 10% took 100% of our Income Growth. They included the 2% who got huge Tax Cuts from Bush. The same poor 2% own 50% of all our Financial Wealth and take home 30% of all our individual income That same 2% had incomes in one year of 4000 Million, 3000 Million, 2000 Million, etc..That same 2% have been instrumental in buying our government. That same 2% have been instrumental in taking our Equality of Income and Wealth to where today we are one of leaders in Inequality of Income and Wealth.

Just picture America with no Democratic Created Safety Nets for the Middle Class And Poor. I see 120,000,00 workers marching on Washington and local/state  governments.

I place MOST blame on Republicans in Washington..Their Ideology of Trickle Down has never worked expect to get Revolutions. Les Miserables! They gave huge tax cuts for Top Incomes. Reagan Press Secretary Larry Speakes in his book "Speaking Out" said the Reagan Tax Cut was general but a Trojan Horse hiding the true purpose to get the Top Rates Reduced. Reagan gave the 2% a 60% cut in Taxes

Bush gave rich 2% Tax Cuts whereby top 2% got four times as much as bottom 80%.

.From 1980 to 2009 the top1% had a 281% Increase in Income and Middle Class 120,000,000 got 24% which was below rate of inflation thereby a decrease in spending power

Today Inequality via Monopoly when 10 Banks own 80% of Deposits in 7600 Banks–Middle Class own practically none of Stock Market, 10 own most of Oil companies, 10 own most of health insurance firms, 10% own most TV and Radio firms, and 120,000,000 look on and half  vote for same 10's who have RAPED them in broad daylight on Main Street . Cheered on by Ministers in Mega-Churches and pastors. Jesus must be proud of them?

    11. Mike, Chicago says:

Many liberals want to see spending cuts, even deep spending cuts, to balance the budget. We just want to cut spending in areas that don't benefit the country, and those cuts are not an option to the neoconservatives since they involve cuts to the military.

    12. Rick West, MN says:

Ah, political common sense for a change – maybe, just maybe, it's not an oxymoron this time.

    13. Bob, Raleigh, NC says:

The operative word regarding the now critically out of control Federal debt is "unsustainable!" No longer can our esteemed Congress Holes continue to simply kick the fiscal responsibility "can" down the road for succeeding administrations to later deal with. This mounding debt is consuming us as a free people and a free nation. It is weakening our national preparedness to defend ourselves against intrusive attacks or evil wills determined to destroy our way of life.

I reiterate time and again, we must subject our entire pool of Congress Holes to TERM LIMITS!!!!!!!

    14. George Colgrove, VA says:

"The Debt Is Not a Game, Mr. President" Nor is stopping the growth of that debt politics as democrats have alleged. It is serious business that if not dealt with will have lasting damaging ramifications.

Everyone receiving a federal paycheck and who has given the oath of their office will be criminally derelict in their duties if they did not start reducing the cost of their programs and project today!

Today we are going into debt by another $4 billion.

    15. Scott Boise ID says:

The debt limit should not be raised under any circumstances, even with "spending reforms". These clowns have never run a business and never balanced a checkbook. Balancing a budget is just not that hard. And they play games with a monetary system that is the foundation of liberty in our country. It's criminal. And if they were private sector folks, destroying the retirements of their employees, they'd be in jail. Which is where most of our ex-Congressmen ought to be right now.

    16. MrShorty, Cave Creek says:

Why are the Republicans messing around with comments like "it will lay a debt burden on our children and grandchildren". That is BS. Without massive changes to government spending, there won't be a USA for our children to live in. Forget about a debt that will be impossible to pay off, we'll be a new country that won't resemble the USA and under a new form of government that won't be anything like what our Founders designed.

    17. Lloyd Scallan (New O says:

It is hard to accept that the author of this article actually believes this

"distraction" amounts to anything but political cover to both Dems and Repbs.

For the first time, I agree with Hoyer that this is nothing but a "political charade".

Don't we get it yet, this bunch in Congress, on both sides of the isle, are pulling another fast-one to deceive the American people into thinking they are doing the people's will.

To write that "Hoyer and Pelosi then joined Republicans and voted against Obama wishes", ABSURD! When have these dedicated Obama lackeys

ever "joined Republicans" or"voted against Obama"? Do you not yet recognize this continuing ploy the Dems have used for decades is just another way they distract from the deaster that faces this nation.

How many times must Obama hold a meeting with Repbs to "hear and listen".

When will we understand that Obama will not "hear or listen". Obama has an

agenda. He will continue to say anything and everything. He will continue to lie, distract, and devert from reality to complete his socialist agenda for this country.

    18. Steven Coy Westminst says:

To the editor of this article, B.S., cut spending and then raise the National Debt limit is a PONZI scheme. Cut the budget by $1.5 Trillion dollars by cutting welfare, food stamps, state aid, Illegal's getting free schooling and our JOB'S. Take all of the Illegal's out of our prisons and send them back from their Country of orgin (murder's executed) and get rid of some 150 government agencies that we don't need. Get rid of the I.R.S. and start a national tax of 7% and cannot be raised except by a super majority of public vote not our corrupt Congress voting. Fix Medicare so it will be around for people in the future and pass an ammendment to force Congress and the Morons in the White House to Balance the Budget or leave office permnantly.

    19. Basia says:

When will Americans finally going to realize that Barack Hussein Obama is DELIBERATLEY trying to destroy this great country with his policies? He has done a excellent job of it in just the first half of his first term. He is a puppet of radical left billionaire George Soros and it is all a master plan to bring the USA down to its knees, cut it down to size and collapse our economy so that their leftist marxist form of government can be installed. They wish to bring us Americans down to our lowest economic standing, make us all dependent on government and then they have full control once and for all. Is that the America we want? Seems to be that the entitlement figures have skyrocketed under Obama's regime. That is exactly what he and Soros want. Don't believe it? Go research George Soros's pasttime of collapsing countries' currrencies like a fun game. The USA is on his hit list and Obama is his well paid puppet.

    20. baba ganooch, beirut says:

why do you think he's playing an arrogant game? why do you continue to think he's just stooopid? drain America's resources, drain America's assets, drain America's energy, drain America's will. the plan is going splendidly, you ignorant, naive, cowardly, embarrassed republicans. never mind, just get out of the way.

    21. Steve, California says:

"Well, President Obama asked for it. And last night he got it in grand fashion—a “clean vote” on raising the nation’s debt limit" "Meanwhile, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) decried the vote, calling it a “political charade” and a “30-second ad attack.”

Gee, give the Dems what they ask for and it's a political charade, doon't give them what they ask for and they decry you for being radicals.

      Cut the unsustainable spending!

Social Security and Medicare both have their own "dedicated" income streams from the taxes we pay into them. Quit tapping those streams for other uses, pay back into them what the government has "borrowed" from those trusts and they might last a while.

    22. M. Woods says:

The newsletter by Dr. Walter Williams of George Mason Univ. is going around and it's enlightening for those who aren't keeping up. I didn't and will not vote for Obama, nor the Democratic party..however, what Dr. Williams says makes so much good sense, it's downright scarey. Pay attention. Gingrich and Palin are out of the loop, that leaves Romney and Cain….let's wait and see.

    23. Barbara says:

Not sure the Republicans are up to the redicule and blame game Obama and his group will hurl at them for not raising the debt ceiling without spending cuts. They are street fighter and the Republicans are still in the palor drinking tea.

    24. Basia says:

When will all Americans finally realize that Obama is on a fast and furious mission to socialize this country and make it into his marxist dream utopia ? He wants all of us to be dependent and grovel for all that the government will give us while he, his cronies and puppeteer George Soros will be eating kobe beef and sipping the best champagne. But first he has to destroy our economy and way of life and bring this country to its knees. He has been doing a good job of it in such short time that in the next year and a half he may well finish the job precisely to his and Soros' plan. All one has to do is educate oneself on Soros's past financial dealings and his euphoric enjoyment of ruining various countries' currencies into the ground. That's no secret. In the end, Soros and his well paid puppet Obama will be roaring with laughter as the rest of us grovel for our government tossed scraps to survive. THAT explains Obama's 1000 mph driving up of our debt since he took office.

    25. Basia says:

Sorry for the duplicate responses. The first comment did not look like it initially "stuck". Message is essentially the same.

    26. Fred, Wa State says:

The letter will have no effect on on Obama.

These economists are not from Hahvud.

    27. James Michael Tierra says:

Do not raise the debt limit repeat no debt limit increase. Our government take in over 2 trillion dollars a year, pay interest with principal, along with our constitution obligations and cut across the board on everything else.

    28. Roger - Chicago, IL says:

I see Paul Ryan on the news this morning saying that they won't agree to raise the debt ceiling unless there is at least the same amount of cuts +. How does this solve anything? You raise the debt by 2 trillion and you cut $2 trillion and one. We are a dollar ahead. Nothing stops Congress from then increasing spending in it's next breath. The only solution is to lock the debt ceiling and start living within our means. But that's too simple I guess.

    29. J.L. Tharp says:

Why would a Marxist socialist progressive like Obama voluntarily get involved in reducing our national debt? How is it that we can expect leadership from someone who apologizes for Ameican exceptionalism? How can we trust a man who surrounds himself with marxist radicals and socialist revoultionaries? Does capitalism exist in muslim controled nations?

    30. Mike from Long Islan says:

I am beginning to think that, like Mikail Gorbachev who brought down the USSR, President Barak Obama has a secret vendetta with our federal government and is trying to bring it down. Our Congress should not pass a bill to raise the national debt until it has passed a bill to cut spending, sent it to the President and the President has signed it into law. This is the only way that the people will know that we are protected from this headlong rush into national bankruptcy!

    31. Carol USA says:

The whole presidency is a game to Mr. B HO. While he spends our money like a theif, putting us deeper and deeper in debt. Further more he is campaigning on our money. Every time he takes Airforce One for a joy ride it costs us way too much money. He is partying and spending, spending, spending he is eating $125.00 a lb. or oz. steak may even be more if imported. While we can not afford hamburger.

So his very actions speaks volumes about the disregard he holds for the office, the country and the people. He cares about nothing but himself. He has been taught to play the game and he does it very well except he is doing it on the lives of people. Real people and he is destroying some of them but he doesn't care.

    32. Norm LA says:

As the economy continues to deteriorate the Republicans will get the blame, irregardless of whether they vote for the increased debt limit. If they should win the Senate and WH in Nov 12, the you know what will have hit the fan by then. The media is gearing up for their campaign to re-elect the architect of the decline. If they paid attention to their primer by Heritage, through the coming onslaught, they will be the victor, while our grandchildren will pay the bills, for the spending this far. The ploy about the Repubs are bought by the corporations is a good one, after Obama has shown his favoritism by picking the corps who supported him and dumping the others.. However the sheep in this country, some of whom post here, and believe the predicted surplus actually existed, will fall for it all over again. Spending cuts should equal the debt milt increase [and not a measly million or two all over again, there Mr. Boehner.

    33. Frank, Florida says:

      1. As a retired physician, I agree with Jeanne Stotler's comments above. An article in "Investors Business Daily" confirmed that point of view. In the same article it was found that it was almost unanimous among foreign born doctors who came to the USA from socialist countries (or US citizens who trained abroad) that they were opposed to ObamaCare. Many elderly doctors are seriously retiring early, rather than endure ObamaCare. Only younger doctors who have not yet had a chance to save up for retirement will be forced to participate in US brand socialized medicine. ObamaCare is simply another nail in the coffin of a once great & free USA.

      2. Yes, the debt is not a game. Time has come for all to take it seriously and I was glad the House offered a "clean" bill to raise the debt ceiling as asked for by Obama, and it failed miserably. Nevertheless, both RINOs & most Democrats are still playing games with it. We need to balance the budget ASAP & start to actually pay down the debt again. My financial advisor stated that will require a cut of $1 out of every $3 now spent by the Federal Government and ALL items (including defense) MUST be on the table. We need to make a priority list and only fund those things most necessary by the Federal Government as envisioned by our Founding Fathers. We also need to get rid of the corrupt private banking cartel, the Federal Reserve. The debt based Federal Reserve Notes need to be phased out so as to go to either a non-debt based new fiat currency under purely Congressional control or back to a dual gold/silver based currency in the ratio of 1:16, like before the Civil War (IF the USA still has control of the gold that was in Fort Knox & IF enough silver can be obtained, since the USA foolishly sold all its silver reserves already). We should avoid a simple gold standard, as gold can be cornered by central bankers. We need to avoid US monetary control by corrupt central bankers abroad.

We are in a financial crises of our own making and we need to face it and fix it. Look to history for lessons and to our Founding Fathers best wishes & ideals.

    34. Jeanne Stotler,Woodb says:

1st. Ken J. The doctors I talked to will for the most take an early retitrement, some will just do consultions. The shame is that these are D__ good Dr's who take time and listen to their patients and do hands on care not relying on someone else to take vitals and listen to the lungs and heart. They carry on conversations with patients and listen about what is going on in their lives. When I went to GU, the first thing one Prof. told us wa to listen to the Patien, as they might drop a clue as to what really was the problem or what led up to the sickness. This has gone to the side as more test at high cost are ordered. 2nd. Now the debt, when my money runs out I can not go shopping, I have to wait for the next py check, the country needs to do the same thing. We as a country CANNOT continue to bail everyone else out. My sainted Mother said and it's so true, "Charity egins at home" We have homeless that are Vets suffering from PTS, and we do nothing as a nation, we have adoptable babies, yet we give extra money for someone to adopt an infant from China, we give money to corrupt nations to rebuild after a tornado or earthquake, fully knowing this will go into the pocket of a corrupt politician, then we turn around and borrow more from a nation that wants to bury us. It does NOT make sense, yet they continue t play the game.

    35. Ardath Blauvelt, Hol says:

Surely the irony of a president who has blown the budget up, pretending to seek fiscal discipline is not lost on anybody. There is nothing so far that he has not used to wreck this country — and he intends to continue to do so, apparently. He's leading all right — leading us all right off the cliff.

    36. Oscar says:

I will ask the khan academy to post daily you- tube calcualtions to educate the world about the spending – do the math, and watch the numbers daily.

Show the different pieces of the federal "pie" each budget, show what comes in (Taxs), show what debt plus interest, and do the math. This visible, posted, model for all of us to WATCH, will but at the US "kitchen table" to work the US budget. Once it is visible, day to day tracking we will see where the waste is and call our leaders on it. None of us want to lose our individual financial freedoms. It is time to become empowered.

In my job I try to do everything at less cost by being creative.

    37. William J. Parker He says:

The only statement George C.Wallace made that I ever agreed with was "There ain't a dime's worth of difference in Democrats and Republicans" The establishment elite in this country is fully to blame for the financial condition we now face. A true patriot would work to restore our constitutional values by voting them all out of office and replace them with persons of honor and respect for the American citizen.

    38. mike hutchings says:

they are not interested in a solution that benifits the nation….they want to change the social and econmic fabric to suite their vision of utopia….a top down centrally planned directorate….that will impoverish everyone but them….lets hope they do not pick our candidate this time……….

    39. mike hutchings says:

it is a game to them with no conseqences………………

Your title to this article is indicating "this is not a game" Your right it's not a game to our "glorious leader". He and his administration know exactly what they are trying to do; destroy this Great Nation by bringing it to its knees. I sincerely hope and pray that the "brain dead" in this U.S.A. awaken before it is to late.

To paraphrase a well known quote, you can take the man out of the country BUT YOU CAN'T TAKE THE COUNTRY OUT OF THE MAN. He was reared in a Muslam and Socialistic environment and resents our Capitalistic way of life. For those of you who read this comment, here is a thought; Look up H.A.A.R.P. and see if you agree with me about the weather this country has been having and the devastation it has caused to the many thousands of people. Do you not think that all of the later will inevitably create more dependency upon our Government for help. It is destroying our land, our food supplies and eventually our moral Just blame it on another scape goat like "Global Warming".Another spin on the "facts" Divert our attention to Mother Nature Why NOT??? Most will accept it as a "normal event" in the scheme of things. You will find out that the HAARP is a top secret military project run jointly with Russia and the U.S.A. Governments designed to dramatically change weather conditions anywhere on the planet and it can be used as a military weapon etc. We really need to awaken the dead in this Great Nation, get rid of this administration and its czars ALONG WITH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. THEN, MOST IMPORTANTLY bring back to life FAMILY VALUES, MORALITY AND OUR RELIGIOUS VALUES. We need to stand together for strength in numbers and to save this Capitalistic Society of ours with the guidance from the Laws in our Constitution. G_D BLESS AMERICA

    41. Stop NationalDebt, U says:

There won't be change until the public truly gets how bad US finances are. The public yawns when it hears $trillions in debt thinking "big number, but its a big country". since they have no perspective. We need to rephrase the issue:

The federal government will need >$1 million per household to pay its IOUs!

      > $116 trillion ="official" debt plus money  short for future social security, medicare, etc

Even its "official debt" of $14.2 trillion  is $123,754 per household!

Details at http://StopNationalDebt.com with links to contact congress & complain.

    42. Donald Greene, Goody says:

I disagree that the Obama Administration's end-of-days rhetoric regarding failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to raise the debt ceiling is "equally applicable to the present state of the nation's fiscal course," as stated in this report. Rather, it is ONLY "applicable to the present state of the nation's fiscal course." The terms “calamitous,” “disastrous,” “catastrophic” and all the rest of the Administration's end of days rhetoric concerning this matter, in fact, have ZERO applicability to a failure to raise the debt ceiling.

    43. HARLEY SPOON says:

No..the debt is not a game to Democrats but it is to the Teapublicans.

    44. Victor Barney, LeHig says:

Hello! Like his father, he knows it well! The difference is that America really is Israel through the Tribe of Joseph and Obama is not only the forbidden foreigner put in over u.s. by our women, but also the Anti-Christ of Revelation! After all, 6,000 years is about over, isn't it? Watch!

    45. Rick says:

It is sad to say but we have no president. The man there is nothing more than a puppet who pulls his strings are those who put us in this mess the problem being is all politians are blind to the real america they all are corrupt and when they vote it is for there good. We the people are who pay there bloated salaries and wrong doings. This country is in such bad shape because of these people. If they raise the limit it will be the end. The people will stand and abolish this goverment because we have no choice we don't get raises when taxes are put upon us and to be honest were so over taxed and we get nothing in return but debt. The politians and there corupt unions and friends take it all. God bless the people and to hell with public officials

    46. Al from Fl says:

So long as the polls, if one believes polls, show Obama with a favorable rating above 40% you have to wonder if the people are paying attention. They either don't care whether this is a socialist country or they are ignorant.

    47. Dan, Georgia says:

If you are debt free, then you can, and must, insist that the government represent you. If you are not debt free, then you can keep you mouth shut. For if you do not keep you mouth shut and complain about 'their' irresponsibility, then you …are a hypocrite. For those who complain about government spending, do you give as much energy and vocalization to your own over spending? We are debt free, therefore, I expect and insist that the government be debt free. My elected officials should represent me and my house.

    48. Bobbie says:

For a president that INHERENTLY fails to think things through in regard to the effects his actions put the people he serves through, he has absolutely no concern. He's not going to suffer the consequences he deliberately governs on those he wants to see struggle. When Obama said "we all need to sacrifice." isn't it obvious the only part of "we all" he refers to omits himself and and his favorites he entitles? Oh and more of those unknowns pulling his strings? They're not sacrificing, they're getting paid to help further the presidents (superiors) cause.

Spoiled brats can talk all they want, but they don't sacrifice, they cry for more until they get it! These brats are dangerous to our very existence. We'd like the strong, sound, principled, civilly respecting country back, we've become accustomed to that's been confiscated by perilous conflicts of authoritative interests.

    49. Dr. Henry D. Sinopol says:

If writing helps, I sincerely hope Heritage has some influence on Obama. He is like a 3rd world leader, spend, fly around on OPM (other peoples money), party and live the good life while living in subsidized housing. He's not going to change, hopefully the voters see through this electronic podium speaker….

    50. Leon Lundquist, Dura says:

I suppose you will believe me now when I say it is a Demo-crat secret weapon "Walk Away!" These Infiltraitors are destroying Representation by 'doing nothing.' So, they aren't 'doing nothing!' They are destroying Representation by 'Doing Nothing!' Obama 'leads from behind' like some derelect jabbering into a mirror! It is Obama's Precedent! His Precedent is deadly for America! Please, Impeach SOME body, ANY body in the Administration. Seriously! Go RICO on them! Right Now!

    51. gailflaherty says:

TO: heritage foundation I would like to see john huntsman & john bolton, (both ambassadors) be on the sean hannity tv broadcast & sean's radio broadcast; I feel they are the only sensible candidates we have that are truly conservative! I don't think that the rest of the republican candidate up for president will be able to go toe to toe with obama & actually beat obama in 20l2; either send me something in the mail regarding this subject or email me something regarding this subject!!

    52. Raul Allegre, St Lou says:

What everyone has to understand is that our entitlement programs MUST be reformed. Period, end of story, that's all she wrote. They are skyrocketing out of control at such a pace that none of the usual solutions can change things. Taxing the rich, cutting defense, elimintating fraud, waste and abuse, etc…, forget all of that. We all need to get on the same page and start to slowly wind these programs down or the country will collapse. Keep the programs as is for those in them or soon to be in them, but for everyone else let's develop a market-based, patient-centered program. Vote out any politician who proposes just kicking the can down the road for future politicians to deal with. They are not serious statesmen who have the best interests of our country in mind.

    53. Ray, Green Valley, A says:

Facts from the Bureau of Labor Statistics – total non-farm employment in January 2001, when President Bush took office was 132,469,000. In 2006, the Democrats seized control of Congress, and that is when the Great Recession started. In January, 2009, when President Obama took office, total non-farm employment was 133,563,000. In spire of two years of recession, President Bush added over two million jobs. In April, 2011, total non-farm employment was 131,028,000. In a bit over two years, President Obama's policies destroyed over 2.5 million jobs. All numbers are seasonally adjusted. In addition, he has added more debt than any other President, alienated our allies and kowtowed to our enemies. This administration is an unmitigated disaster!

    54. Judith Wolfe Commerc says:

Of all the comments listed the only one that tells it like it is goes under the name Basia. You are exactly right when you say Obama was put in position to destroy this wonderful country. One only needs to read Audacity of Hope and Dreams of My Father to realize what George Soros saw in this individual. He saw in Obama what Germany had come to recognize in Hitler a vicious narssitic power hungary man who cared not one whit for life or liberty. A man so consumed with the dream of creating a perfect human being, something he was not, and a country where the government was the religion. This is what George Soros saw in Barack Hussein Obama. He realized that because Obama was the first black man to run for the presidency many would vote for him just to prove they were not racist. I would go so far as to say that those who voted for Obama had no idea how dangerous this man really is. Our first example of this was Obama care. A health care program set up to virtually take over our government and take over the people of the United States and decide their destiny by inserting death panels into the bill. We can only hope and pray those same individuals who voted for this racist man (hence his hatred of the Jews) look closely in 2012 and examine their conscious for the sake of their wives, husbands, children and grandchildren. Read his books before the library retires them as they did for Mein Kaumpf in Germany. Just as Hilter set out his blueprint for Germany so has Obama for the United States. READ AND GET EDUCATED – BECAUSE IT IS NOW OR NEVER!

    55. KC - New Mexico says:

After watching many of the good old war movies this past Memorial Day weekend, I asked what would happen today if a foreign country attacked us like Japan did at Pearl Harbor. Are we so disconnected as a society to not be able to rally around a central cause? Would the lousy central media not join as one and support the central cause? Would the republicans and democrats debate the issue of declaring war? Would our un-educated graduates be able to understand the issue? Would our apathetic socialistic generation, that only knows governmental handouts, be able to get on board with fixing the issue? Today, sadly, I think we would debate the issue as the bombs were falling and the shores and boarders were invaded.

I equate the current economic issues, foreign policy, and general lack of leadership on both sides to this issue. We cannot afford to play the games as Congress and the President are doing. We must as a country rally around and make systemic and strategic changes to improve our society and culture. Get with it America – time is running out!

    56. Ben C., Ann Arbor, M says:

      clarence swinney :

Perhaps you can post who actually pays taxes – you seem to have left this out in your discussion. Remember – corporations don't pay any tax – they simple pass it on to consumers.

Perhaps you can remind us who actually signed into law the degregulation of the investment banking industry. To his credit he warned of the consequences.

And finally, perhaps you can comment on the subprime loans mandated by Congress and its effects on the economy.

Most of us have a far greater understanding of history (especially having lived it) than some realize. WE do our homework and see through biased rhetoric.

    59. toledofan says:

The entire issue is all about spending and as long as the Democrats control the White House and Senate, they will just stay the course and find other ways to manipulate the system to avoid the inevitiable. I think that, to most of us, we understand the gravity of the problem, but, because the Democrats have no other plan and in many instances would actually, it's hard to believe, let the system fail so they can remake it to their advantage. If you take the events of the past 2.5 years and look at all the mistakes, non actions, lies and deciet you have to consider that what these guys are doing is actually part of their agenda.

This is what happens when America gets wrapped up in a 'Hopey Changey' (Sarah Palin), inexperienced, junior senator and hoists him up to Cheifdom.

He took a pretty bad situation, and made it far worse!!!

    61. Blair Franconia, NH says:

The Ancient Chinese believed that the gods punished you by giving you exactly what

you wanted. There's an Ancient Chinese proverb that goes as follows: "Be careful of

what you wish for. You just might get it." Obama asked for a clean vote and he got a

clean vote. Right now in the halls of Congress, there are Congressmen and Congresswomen, Republicans and Democrats, who are so happy they're doing the

      dance of joy. :)

    62. Frazier Marks, Esq. says:

Please get informed. You must read the book entitled "The Roots of Obama's Rage" by Dinesh D'Souza, Pres. of King's College, New York City. Obama has little interest in any form of sustained economic growth for this Nation. It's time to punish Western neo-colonialism. The U.S. is at the top of his list. Pelosi, Reid and their hacks have sold us out.

    63. Laura Larson, St Lou says:

Why not go after entitlement programs like HUD assistance rather than messing with Medicare benefits?

Our tax dollars pay for a 14% contribution to their employees retirement plan. That is absurd. The most private empoyers match is 3%. Why should we fund these programs?

I worked at a Housing Authority where the Director abused Capital Funds using them to create non-profit revenues. So much abuse in these agencies. Why should not private firms audit our goverment to report such findings to report to consumers?

Every tax payer pays for housing for low income where generations have been living off tax payers for generations – they feel entitled to these squatter rights?

Leave alone the SS for elderly and focus on the abuses in Medicare and HUD assistance programs.

Every Goverment program needs to be audited as to what the proper use of dollars is making changes.

Maybe OIG is not doing their job!

    64. and2therepublic, ill says:

"[T]he citizens of the United States are responsible for the greatest trust ever confided to a political society. If justice, good faith, honor, gratitude and all other qualities which ennoble the character of a nation and fulfill the ends of government be the fruits of our establishments, the cause of liberty will acquire a dignity and lustre, which it has never yet enjoyed, and an example will be set, which cannot but have the most favourable influence on the rights of Mankind. If on the other side, our governments should be unfortunately blotted with the reverse of these cardinal and essential virtues, the great cause which we have engaged to vindicate, will be dishonored and betrayed; the last and fairest experiment in favor of the rights of human nature will be turned against them; and there patrons and friends exposed to be insulted and silenced by the votaries of tyranny and usurpation."

James Madison – Address to the States.

    65. James Huffer, Tysons says:

Funny thing happened to Obama as he tries to undo the mess of his predecessor, the predecessors partners in crime sent him the message that they were going to save the rest of the taxpayers money for Jeb to steal in 2012. I wonder who he will invade to justify his unacounted for trillions? Or a better question is whom of the Bush friends will attack us next?

    66. JohnL2 SC says:

Obama is far too busy campaigning for 2012 to get involved in actually sttempting to lead the nation! He has YET to be a leader! He was elected by others than I for hope and change…..the only H & C the USA needs is to replace the inept Obama in 2012 and send him back to the corruption of Chicago politics and let him fade into the WORST PRESIDENT EVER spot! (Sorry, Jimmy Carter!)

    67. Laurie Hawaii says:

Mr. Shorty, You are totally correct.! What is this stupidity about our children and grandchildren…..In a matter of months, we will be in the mud, food lines, starvation for all of us fools who let the tyrant push us into this disaster…..no drilling in Alaska and horrible regulations, taxxes to destroy jobs and energy…..wasting tons of money on lobby lawyers, Golfer-in-Chief Campaigning all over the world to get into bed with our enemies who are corrupt and feeding Obama $$$$for the oil digging money we feed foreign countries while our people are starving, EPA crap regulations to save some idiot 3 inch lizard that ruins thousands of drilling jobs in Texas and oh, by the way, the 90,000 dollar file on the poor bunny missouri man who made $200 on selling bunnies without a license. Are we having communist Tyranny yet!! Welcome to the Obama-World Empire with Soros and Obama, Reid and Pelosi. Stand up and fight before we collapse!!!!!

    68. 2dokie says:

The problem is the libs have succeeded in dumbing down the electorate to the extent that the liberal dolts continue to create disasters for them to make pretense to solve… and a great number of union members and poor believe in these idiots! Basic economic principles escape them, so we have hundreds of naive hostile people supporting…COMMUNISM,for the love of peace!! This portends a societal disaster! There better be a"come to Jesus" moment pretty quick or we're going to have a disastrous situation the liberal idiots never anticipated. If they have, they deserve what's coming!

    69. Dan-Minnesota says:

Why doesn't the House tie the repeal of Obama's shovel-ready health care to the raising of the debt limit?

    70. Corey says:

When considering which party's policy to follow when it comes to balancing a budget perhaps we should look at both of their track records. Last Republican to balance a budget? Ike. In the 54 years since he did that Two (2) Democratic Presidents had balanced budgets (LBJ and Clinton) for a total of 5 times. Maybe we should consider listening to the only party to have balanced a budget in the last half century during this debate.

    71. Renny, Maryland says:

If the House votes for a Debt Increase, "I give up and will not vote again!!!" If you can't see the writing on the wall in terms as to what these "people" want, you are "blind!!!" They will walk all over you and spend every penny you give them, regardless of what you say in terms of cutting back or a "Budget!!"

Why do you think they don't produce a budget, don't you get it??????

    72. Jill-Maine says:

Clinton keeps getting the credit for the Republican majority in Congress. They made him look good. Clinton didn't have 911 he just let it get to the point where we had a 911.
