  • VIDEO: Victims of the Obama Drilling Moratorium

In the midst of the worst oil spill in U.S. history, President Obama imposed a moratorium on deepwater oil drilling one year ago this week. What was supposed to be a months-long ban on Gulf of Mexico operations has dragged on for a year in what’s now been dubbed a “permitorium” by critics of the administration.

The Department of Interior justified last year’s moratorium as a necessary step to develop new regulations for offshore drillers. But a year later, those closest to the action in the Gulf of Mexico see it as something different—a deliberate freeze on energy production.

Even after facing criticism about the slow rate of permit approvals, the administration still lags far behind the historical average for new deepwater permits. That’s cause for concern not just for the people of Louisiana and neighboring states. It also has nationwide economic consequences.

Heritage and the Institute for Energy Research recently sent a team to Louisiana to hear directly from the people most impacted by the Obama administration’s policies. Our new video reveals their frustration, particularly with Obama for his words of praise about offshore drilling in Brazil while doing the opposite here at home.

I am in the oilfield industry so I am living first hand the repercussions of this disgraceful policy of killing an industry via inaction and neglect. As the second generation of a family owned oilfield services company, I can say I have never been so pessimistic about the future of this area and our business. Let me be perfectly clear, Mr. Obama — We want to work. We need to work. This administration makes preparations to "take care of" those of us out of work — but makes no provisions to let us work! I do not want unemployment benefits, I want my job. It is very simple. Continue to neglect this industry and our state will fail. Please help us stop this travesty!

    2. Shawn Boike, Long Be says:

This is hypocritical actions according to his statements. How do you get away from foreign dependence when you won't build for future needs in your own backyard.

    3. Ty Aldrich says:

When it comes to drilling for oil, the Obama administration has increased the "just say no" tactic that liberals and Democrats have employed for decades. There is plenty of oil in the United States of America, if only the government would allow it to be drilled for, and put into the system. The idea that it would take years for newly producing oil wells to increase the supply of oil and lower the price of gasoline is simply a lie. The same 'speculation' that drives up the price of a barrel of oil will drive down the price when speculators know there is more oil being produced.

    4. Bobbie says:

In the midst of the worst oil spill caused by human error and corrected by human intelligence, Obama needlessly imposed a moratorium on deepwater oil drilling when it could've been avoided had we leadership of the American mindset. “permitorium” sounds more accurate.

This was the first and only time obama reacted with record speed to establish a moratorium! Sure isn't record speed putting things back in order…

A little disingenuous for the Department of Interior to propose "it necessary to develop new regulations" at the time, when government inspections gave the all clear and awarded BP within a year before the accident!? Hmm, more dangerous incompetence.

There's no reason or excuse for the lagging. 11 lives were killed.. 11 lives who provided for their families. And all others now without a job because of the actions of this government authority whose inactions and deceptions waste more time pretending to do something while forcing feed from his tax paid pockets, which is consequential to the economy.

for reasons known to Obama (and the like-minded) he doesn't want to appreciate or respect the will of the people to provide for their families well-being as they responsibly and freely did before Obama's leadership.

Thank you to all Heritage Representatives. God Bless Heritage and the people directly impacted by the disrespectful, burdensome, costly, unsympathetic, ignorance of one danger in authority, who's love for stipulations is on everything productive only without stipulations.

This is a great video. Is there a way Heritage could get this on television to educate more people on this issue?

    6. Lloyd Scallan (New O says:

Do not believe one word that Mary Landrieu utters. It all a set up with the DNC to win back voters she lost in her Louisiana district after she was caught accepted bribes to vote for ObamaCare. She was first elected because of voter fraud by ACORN and has been an Obama lackey every sence. She don't give a damn for the people of Louisiana that have lost their jobs in the oil indursty. The only thing she is concerned with is saving her job in the Senate.

    7. Bruce Niehm, Ames / says:

Thanks Heritage for putting together a great video on this sad policy that is hurting Americans who need and want work. What a poor, poor energy policy for the USA. We need to explore and drill in and off the coasts of the USA. We do not need to purchase more and more foreign oil. Thanks again.

BEFORE YOU DESTROY A REGARDED WAY OF LIFE YOU MUST HAVE BEEN PART OF IT. DOUBTFUL ANY OF YOU KNOW A CHRISTMAS TREE FROM A DRILLING BIT. YOU DON'T WANT TO CREAT JOBS, YOU JUST WANT TO CONTROL AND PUNISH THOSE OF US THAT FIND MOST ANYTHING ABOUT CHICAGO POLITICIANS CORRUPT AND UNAMERICAN. DO YA'LL EVEN KNOW ONE GRADE OF OIL FROM ANOTHER. WHAT DO YA'LL DO WITH THE OLD OIL WHEN YOU CHANGE THE OIL IN YOUR VEHICLES??? FOR THE MOST PART YOU ARE TO YOUNG TO KNOW THAT A MAJOR REASON THAT GERMANY LOST W.W.2 WAS LACK OF OIL, SMOKE THAT PIPE. DISGUSTED LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZEN, J.FORT SMITH JR. NEXTOLASTWORD@MYGAIT.COM

    9. Slick in Nebraska says:

You want to bring an end to this strong-arm hold that the President has on the oil industry AND all of our elected officials are ignoring? SHUT OFF the money!!!!!

You can bet that if NO ONE sent money to the IRS and everyone quit supporting their elected officials in Washington, it wouldn't take long before they would either resign OR get off their butts and confront the President and the Dept of Interior!!!!

It is obvious to me that NO ONE in Washington realizes they are NOT the boss . . . WE are!!! And now we must do what any boss would do for the good of the "company store" . . . FIRE THEM ALL!!!!!

    10. a.d. monday , searcy says:

Obama, the community organizer and his rabble of socialist advisers know nothing about the oil business. Their idea of sound energy policy is not spilling any gas on the ground when refueling your car.

    15. Nico says:

@Heidi – Your Industry has destroyed the Coast, deforested huge portions of land with shipping canals and threatened the very ecosystem we all love and depend on. We also live amongst a stretch of the Mississippi that is condemned as Cancer Alley because of Oil Refineries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_Alley. Meanwhile Oil Production and Exploration is the highest it has been since 2003 and you have the audacity to complain about Obama? Bush was giving tax breaks for SUV's and thought nothing efficiency standards.

You people are shameless in your exploitation and blatant greed. You claim to be conservatives, yet you promote wasteful and unwarranted energy policies that will condemn us all with war, environmental destruction and cancer for all.

    16. Nico says:

@Shawn With efficiency standards and more US Oil Production since 2003. That is how.

    17. Bobbie says:

Nico, why would you expect any of those things in the 21st century? Have people become that ignorant? Why yes. Of course they have. Do you believe what you want instead of putting things into proper perspective? Talk about waste in all the costs that go into renewable energy that causes more of your claim to produce then the fuel used today which is much more efficient and consistent. The world has oil, people that want it to work, learn from mistakes, people that don't will use exaggerations and manipulations to create illusions. it is produce much cleaner today than ever. The human life span has increased and nothing or no one is dropping dead. why not see it? If oil is so bad, yet produces such good, why not use until it's gone?

Thank you to Heidi. It's so wrongfully ignorant to keep us from our own resources while the world is free to use theirs.

    19. Renee says:

There are so many people in this county who would like to be depend less on other countries for our oil. What I find is strength in numbers. If you have an email list and you group like minded people together they will back you. If you tell them we need you to send a pretyped letter (allow the members to make changes I believe most will not change a word), and link to their representative's email adresses I think you will see great support. It will take work I'm not saying it's easy, but it will help you to get things done. Only when people stand together speaking for what we think is best for our country will things change. You need to have the tides change in your favor, and to do that you need to have enough people in the water all rocking together. Put me on the list I'll rock with you to drill for US oil owned by US companies.
