  • Minority Rule?

    Should a union need the support of most workers at a company in order to represent them? Most people would say yes—but most people are not union bosses. Unions want to represent as many dues paying members as possible. Whether those workers want their services is beside the point.

    At the behest of union lobbyists, President Obama’s appointees to the National Mediation Board (NMB) rewrote the rules governing airline union elections. For the past 75 years, unions had to win the support of a majority of employees at an airline to unionize it. Now they need support from only a majority of those who turn out to vote.

    This is a crucial difference, because workers in the airline industry are spread far and wide. Many airlines have many employees at a few major hubs, with smaller groups of employees stationed at regional airports around the country. Under the new rules, unions can focus their organizing efforts on the hubs and ignore the rest of the workforce, who may not even be aware that the election is happening. The new rules are designed to allow unions to organize a company even if only a small minority of workers supports them.

    This just happened at AirTran, where the machinists union organized almost 3,000 workers with just 34 percent of the vote. While 30 percent of AirTran employees voted against the union, 36 percent did not vote at all. Under the new rules, they did not count. The union did not need their support to represent them.

    If these workers later decide they do not like their representation, that’s just too bad. Airline employees get treated differently than most private-sector workers. The law establishes no procedure for them to decertify their union. Once airline employees unionize, that decision is almost impossible to reverse. Nor do state right-to-work laws apply to them. Unionized airline employees must pay union dues or get fired, no matter where they live.

    If workers want to unionize, they certainly should be able—management gets the union it deserves. But workers should not have union representation and mandatory dues (of 1–2 percent of their pay) forced upon them.

    Union bosses disagree. They want more dues-paying members, however they get them.

    Obama said he would stand up to special-interest handouts. He said he would not side with the powerful against the powerless. Apparently he did not mean standing up for individual workers against unions that want their money or to union special interests.

    Fortunately, Congress is moving to restore majority rule. A provision in the House Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill restores the NMB’s original majority support requirements. Unions are lobbying furiously to have this provision removed, and the House will vote on an amendment doing that on Friday. If the House retains this provision, it will have taken an important step to protect workers’ rights.

      I was always taught that every person counted. But according to the new rules, you don't count unless you show up to vote. How is this fair to the rural worker who isn't informed that a vote is taking place. And then to say that state "right-to-work" laws don't matter. Pay Union dues or lose your job. That is the Unions upsuring State's rights, with the blessing of the Obama administration.

      Unions need to go, Obama needs to go, and the entire system needs to under go an immediate audit to neutralize all the pro-labor union laws and regulations. Only when the actual laborers and employees are in charge, not the Union bosses who take 7 figure salaries, will the American Industrial system recover and grow great once again. Until then, these leeches will continue to suck the life from this country in the name of "Fair Labor", which is anything but.

      As far as the federal workers go, they have to say the oath of their office as their first duty on the job:

      I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

      Though it is believed by a few that saying the oath of office has turned into a ceremony of an inside insidious government cult, the words mean the same to we the people. Moreover, we expect you to follow it.

      Congress has to say a similar oath. The entire federal workforce and congress members by virtue of taking that oath need to be fired upon taking their first paycheck. Joint Staff Chief Adm. Mike Mullen declared that the National Debt is the Nation's Number one National Security Issue!

      Every bloated budget produced by these feds is an act of terror against the nation. Every extreme benefit they take is an act of terror against the nation. Every federal worker, program, agency, or department that is funded by this dangerous debt is an act of terror against this nation. Every obfuscation, every redaction, and every lie attempting to hide these crimes is an act of terror against this country. Taking twice the income they would have otherwise got in the private sector with the nation suffering a near permanent debt is an act of terror against this nation.

      The CIA asking for $500 billion to cover the CIA federal worker’s pensions is a colossal act of terror against the nation – worse than the initial attacks on 9/11/01.

      Excessive spending and our extreme debt have been identified as a National Security Crisis greater than the war on terror. Not cutting government, not paying the full interest on the debt, and not starting the process of paying down the debt are all acts of terror against this nation.

      To you feds, start following the oath to us. You are our servants to do jobs that NEED to be done for the nation's needs. If you are setting at your desk cruising the internet, if you are on the phone with your significant other, if you are taking a long lunch, if your office is having a party for someone’s birthday or if you are chatting at the water fountain, you are committing an act of terror against this nation. As per your oath, today you need to start the process of reversing these crimes. You stated that you "solemnly swear that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Look in the mirror, you need to protect "we the people" from yourself – the domestic enemy!

      Mr. Obama shouldn't be so discriminating to side with everything union. A company shouldn't need one as long as there is free choice but especially pushed by government! Majority rule is the only fair way. Get rid of government unions. They defeat the purpose of the business by demanding more than worth.
