  • Even PolitiFact Admits: President Obama Raised Taxes

This Sunday while defending charges that he was a “man who wants to redistribute wealth,” President Barack Obama told Fox News‘ Bill O’Reilly: “I didn’t raise taxes once.” As PolitiFact points out, not only is this completely false, but President Obama began raising taxes almost immediately upon taking office:

The idea that Obama did not raise taxes is just plain wrong. He signed legislation raising taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products soon after taking office; that money goes to pay for children’s health insurance programs. The law went into effect in 2009. He also signed the health care law, which includes taxes on indoor tanning that went into effect last year. (Regular PolitiFact readers will remember our fact-check of reality TV star Snooki and her complaint about the new tax last year.)

The new health care law also includes a tax on people who decide not to have health insurance, as an incentive for them to get coverage. The tax phases in gradually, starting in 2014. By 2016, the tax would be $695 per uninsured person up to a maximum of three times that amount, or $2,085. The law includes exemptions for people who can’t find affordable insurance, and a few other special circumstances.

More significantly, the health care law includes new taxes on the wealthy, starting in 2013. Individuals who make more than $200,000 and couples that make more than $250,000 will see additional Medicare taxes of 0.9 percent. They will also, for the first time, have to pay Medicare taxes on their investment income at a 3.8 percent rate. (Current law is that all workers and employers split a 2.9 percent Medicare tax; the self-employed pay all of it.)

The small percentages may not sound like a lot, but those taxes are expected to generate $210 billion over 10 years, or just over half of all the new revenues the health care law authorizes. Other provisions include new fees on health insurance companies and prescription drug manufacturers, and a new tax on high-cost “Cadillac” health insurance plans.

Politifact fails to total up all of Obamacare’s tax hikes, but The Heritage Foundation did. All told Obamacare contains 18 separate tax increases that will cost taxpayers $503 billion between 2010 and 2019.

Mr. President, I REFUSE YOU TO STEP INTO MY PERSONAL HEALTH. You're job is to protect the general welfare from PANDEMICS! Quit infringing on my personal responsibility to myself and children. GOVERNMENT IS NOT WELCOME!

      I heartily agree, Bobbie.

retail taxes have gone up…oh NO! socialism!

lets talk about federal income taxes, not one penny increase. Infact taxes are lower then anytime in history since 1952, even lower then under George W.! Heritage, will you post this comment?

It's so interesting when you attack the mandate tax. What if you get injured and have no insurance? Will your out of pocket money somehow be less? Your arguments are so flawed it's comical :)

    6. Yankee says:

First, this blog post was about the fact that some taxes have gone up under Obama's leadership and with his approval. Income taxes have indeed not gone up. If my sources are correct, they have been the same since 2003; the fact should be obvious. The increase in excise taxes on tobacco products simply disproves Obama's claim. It does not automatically equate to socialism.

Second, if I choose not to have insurance and I incur costs as a result of being injured, that is my responsibility. I do consider it a good idea in most people's cases to carry health insurance; however, it is not an appropriate function of government to replace personal responsibility with punitive laws.

In the bigger picture, the idea of such a mandate remains the domain of the states. The U.S. Congress is invading the authority of the states with this mandate.

    7. FarLeftLoons says:

I propose all those who are for the Obama healthcare, tax them to pay for it. They want it so bad, they can pay for it.

On second thought, the problem with this idea is the majority of liberals are fat, lazy, unemployeed, drug addicts who are broke and miserble. Asking liberals to "pay" for something is not something they can comprehend.

"On second thought, the problem with this idea is the majority of liberals are fat, lazy, unemployeed, drug addicts who are broke and miserble"
The majority of liberals are college educated, urban intellectuals. Allied with hard working Americans in Unions. The Unemployed don't vote, and never did. Supporting policies that alleviate the misery of others is our hallmark. Theres just as many of us as there are of you, if not more, we won 2008 with a landslide, America is full of us. We're your scientists, your intellectuals, the teeming masses of your cities. We're very nice people. We drink coffee in the morning, just like you do. We ALL go to work. And work late. Work around the clock, we work in offices with deadlines, more than timecards. Come to NYC, or, pretty much any city, any college campus, but in NYC you see the succesfull, since it costs 3000$ a mnth just to afford rent, NYC is where you see an entire hustling metropolis of them, running to and from offices, master's degrees, PHD's and all. The most conservative area is Wall Street, but, only because they're the most selfish group in the city, they dont want to pay more taxes. But the richest residential area, Central Park West, is where Democrats hold 5000$ a plate fundraisers. Art Galleries and museums, the local liberals brush with the tourists from Red STats…. and, you want to talk overweight? The top 10 fattest cities, are all in the south. Where is unemployment the highest? Teen Pregnancy? Red States. We have a better system of coping with society's ills in our states, we dont pretend they dont exist.
As for the Individual Mandate: IT forces people to take responsibility. Before, a person too lazy, or stupid, or "Freedom loving Libertarian" gets hit by a bus….Who do you think paid for it? YOU did. It cost local governments, and you paid it In taxes that could have gone to schools. You like paying for lazy people? Than keep opposing the Health care reform. Its a very Conservative policy, we on the liberal side, we wanted the Public Option – a Government run alternative that would force the big Insurance companies to compete. We threw it away and took the Romney Option – Let the Market solve the problem. We're still the only Western Nation (White) that keeps health as a total for-profit concern. Fine. We keep it. But your opposition to it is only because its a good idea, WE passed it, we'll get the credit in the future. Its almost childish the opposition to it now, it will never be overturned. You would need a Filibuster proof senate. If Romney won in 2008, or any other clear headed Republican who actually wants to solve problems. they'd pass the same thing. The fact Democrats did it, means you HAVE to scream about it. Look at your characterization of Liberals, you've yet to meet one…..youve yet to even hear what we're saying. Indeed, if the Left really WAS a group of jobless people who want to tax you to prevent them from working, we pay taxes. Many of us make more than 250,000 so we pay ALOT of taxes, but we support policies to benefit ALL Americans, out of a sense of patriotism that is lacking in the Right. You scoff at us, who said paying taxes is patriotic, that's the sacrifice. In your idea of Patriotism, who cares about the Americans born to disadvantaged families? Who cares that people with cancer, cant get treated? Who cares when children get sick, if their parents are only making 50Gs and made the mistake of not getting insurance? Let them die, right? Well, your alone, in the entire Western World, there is no other nation with a political movement that argues what you take to be as incontrovertible facts. Think…about who is REALLY benefiting from policies you support: Are you being used…? BY those people who were born with billions of dollars, who wont even let you into their gated community?

    9. James says:

      Reagan Raised taxes 11 times
Papa Bush raised taxes costed him his second term
Baby Bush raised taxes 4 times
so obama is still behind these 3
