  • Heritage Surpasses 700,000 Members: The Conservative Tide Is Rising

Forty years ago, The Heritage Foundation was just an idea – a vision in the minds of a handful of individuals hoping to fill the conservative void on Capitol Hill. In 1973, their vision became a reality, with a tiny staff and a giant mission: to build an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society flourish.

Fast forward to today. The Heritage Foundation is the most influential and broadly-supported public policy think tank in Washington, with more than 270 staffers and a membership base of over 700,000 active members.

The past few decades have been marked by numerous victories for Heritage and for the conservative movement as a whole. Take, for instance, our book Mandate for Leadership, which largely shaped Ronald Reagan’s presidency.  Also, consider our groundbreaking research that helped shape the 1996 welfare reforms. Or examine our success in 2005 as we provided quick Hurricane Katrina solutions that were adopted by Congress and White House officials.

Heritage’s achievements over the years have helped to make it a permanent institution in Washington.

But in one key respect, Heritage is different from other Washington institutions. As former Vice President Dick Cheney once put it, “Heritage is in Washington. It is not of Washington.”

    Our membership tells all.

With over 700,000 members and counting, The Heritage Foundation is building a strong presence in communities spanning the nation. Our members are in every state and every Congressional district. Many lawmakers would be hard-pressed to ignore the growing number of Heritage members in their districts.

    Consider:

    • Three-quarters of Congressional districts are home to more than 1,000 Heritage members each;
    • Two hundred and twenty-seven Members of Congress represent districts that include more than 1,500 Heritage members; and
    • Traditionally “blue” states like California, Pennsylvania and New York are home to large numbers of our members: 80,000, 31,000 and 29,000 respectively.

The Heritage Foundation’s membership growth is only the beginning. As recent tea parties, town halls, Washington rallies, and last Tuesday’s elections show, millions of individuals nationwide identify with conservative principles. We strive to be the voice for these conservatives in Washington.

Ours is a movement on the rise—not least because we are recalling America back to the founding principles that have made America exceptional.

Help us build this movement and build our momentum. Donate to The Heritage Foundation today.

    1. Andrew, VA says:

Congratulations! Although, I still find it interesting that, when you superimpose this map over the latest "red/blue" election map, your strongest supporters are mostly in blue states. Guess you need to see liberalism in action to become a conservative, eh?

    2. Kelly, Hudsonville M says:

Andy Vitaliti! Great article. Heritage is a wonderful place to intern.

    3. R. Tubania, Honolulu says:

Why are your candidates nitwits – palin, odonnell, paul, angle, etc.? Do you have any candidates that have at least some intelligence?

I am Member #1125657. In coming 112th what is the probability that Rep. Kevin Brady's (TX-8) current bills in 111th Federal Sunset Act (HR-393) and Spending Reform Act (HR-311) after being reintroducesd will get out of committee? Then if they get to floor, what chance do they have for passage?

    10. W. Lee Cockerill,528 says:

Thanks for the leadership you are giving for the conservative cause. I am in my 90's and love my country. It hurts to see many of our freedoms slipping away.

    11. Billie says:

Congratulations Heritage! May many more come to find the truth! Thank you for all you endure and the hard work it takes to reveal the truth through the deliberate deception from elected government members. No American deserves less than the truth. Obviously this is in direct conflict of the president as he has yet to tell it.

Heritage, your work ethic is highly commendable and greatly appreciated!

    13. James "Fred&quo says:

I believe in the conservative movement. I hate the Obama Reid and Pelosi ideaology for America. I voted a straight Republican ticket. I do not trust Democrats, because they are not sound people for this country. I will start a revolt if the states have to help out of California for that unintelligent idiot Jerry Brown because they don't help themselves–get jobs and and stop spending. I will do what I can to stop any help (bailouts) for California or any other state that continue on with democratic values. It is not fair to help people who do not want to help themselves and continuing to take handouts from people who have been responsible to themselves and their country.

    14. Charles R. says:

Its wonderful to know there are over 700,000 people that are smart enought to take advantage of good information that you put out each day. Thank you for your doing such a great job.

right. Palin managed to be Governor of Alaska as a nitwit. Rand Paul is an optometrist. If you think that is so easy that a nitwit could do it, please try to do either one and prove that even a nitwit can do it.

    17. Marissa says:

Congrats and glad to see Texas is red on your map and the national map :D

    18. Jill-Maine says:

R.Tubania- Hawaii produced the biggest nit wit of all and he is president.

    19. Dave Aldridge says:

From a "tiny staff" to 270? Can anyone say bloated ? You are doing EXACTLY what you accuse Congress and the D.C. elite. Sorry, I like most of your articles, but I se another empire in construction.

    20. Ernest Hoppe, FOB Wa says:

Early member from the late 80's/early 90's would like to renew membership, as back in the heady days resulting in the 104th Congress! Been out of touch with active duty military since then…

    21. Greg says:

Most the country is RED vice some welfare-union strongholds that are BLUE. Now, the trouble is, the Blue has been making the rules over that of the Red for a long time now… so, what I propose is that the RED move into the BLUE and begin changing the BLUE to RED.

      Make Sense? :-)

Seriously, very happy we have begun to fix this country and I HOPE the GOP/TEA machine will come together, smoke a cigarette, and kiss each other in the morning.

      1. Like DeMint and other say: Stop Pork.

      2. Cut all congress Pay.

      3. Cut all Federal Employees pay.

      4. Balanced Budget Amendment.

      5. Amend Commerce Clause.

      6. Extend forever Bush Tax Cuts for all.

      7. Lower all taxes on businesses for sure to stimulate them (like they should have been in the beginning)

      8. Fix obamacare and replace it.

      9. Fix SS with young people getting personal accounts and make all SS go into an account that cannot be touched, but… what is received is already spent so, that is kind of mute point.

      10. FIX THE BORDER AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! ENFORCE THE LAWS. Make Business accountable for hiring illegal aliens with STIFF penalties. Modify and fix AG visa programs for farmers with accountability.

      11. LAWS to stop all illegals in classrooms, hospitals, anchor babies, etc… vice emergency care if in accident or similar.

      12. Fix once and for all, gerrymandering by fixing by county, latitude and longitude, or some other method, all the district boundaries.

      13. NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION LAWS that prove you are a citizen, resident, voter, etc… just like when a policeman pulls you over to give a ticket.

The worst argument in the world is to call the opposition "stupid" when the only evidence that you have is what your handlers have told you and for that matter, what you've seen on the tube. It would serve you well to actually check things out on your own, in an honest and thorough manner. The Heritage website would be a good place to start.

If you cannot come up with even the most fundamental, honest response to the arguments presented by those you oppose, then everything that you say will fall on deaf ears and you will have wasted your time.

    23. Deborah Crenshaw, Du says:

Please let me know how I can join your group. I became familiar with it by

seeing its representatives on Fox News, the only news station that my family

      and friends watch.

    24. R. Duthweiler, Anahe says:

I am overjoyed by the numbers in California, actually beating Texas. But we need to do much, much more to achieve the goals of the Heritage Foundation because California is still on "the Left Coast".
