  • Morning Bell: A Leftist Wish List vs. National Security

    One of the foremost responsibilities of the federal government is to ensure the security of our nation. It is right there in the Preamble to the United States Constitution: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” This week the U.S. Senate is scheduled to take up the FY 2011 National Defense Authorization Act. This legislation is necessary to fund the defense of the United States and its interests abroad. The House already passed their bill in May. But Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) would rather talk about amnesty.

    Why is Reid doing this? One only need look at the RealClearPolitics aggregate polling data: he is in a dead-heat reelection battle with State Rep. Sharon Angle (R). That is why Reid bypassed usual Senate procedure and included “the DREAM Act” in the defense bill. The DREAM Act creates a “path to citizenship” for illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. before the age of 16, have lived here for 5 years, and either serve in the military or attend college. But the bill also prohibits the government from deporting anyone who has even filed an application for the program. This essentially gives amnesty to anyone who applies regardless of whether they actually qualify for the act’s protections. Worse, the program would also allow applicants to sponsor their immediate family members for a green card. While current law prohibits sponsorship of illegal immigrants living in the United States, this leaves open the possibility that they could fraudulently, through falsified documents or other means, sponsor their parents who are in the U.S. illegally – creating an even larger amnesty.

    By itself the DREAM Act is terrible public policy. It would reward illegal aliens for violating federal immigration laws. It would encourage more illegal immigration by sending the message that the United States does not take its immigration laws seriously. And in an additional slap in the face to law-abiding Americans, it offers in-state college tuition to illegal immigrants, while legal students in the rest of the country would have to pay out-of-state tuition rates. But forcing this measure into the defense authorization bill is just shameful.

    Unfortunately this is not the first time Reid has pulled this stunt. Last year’s defense bill, The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010, expanded federal hate crime laws to include crimes motivated by a victim’s “actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.” What did that have to do with national security? And this year the leftist Senate majority is also considering adding language to the bill that would repeal the military’s “don’t ask don’t tell” policy. This despite the fact that each of the four Service Chiefs (General Conway (USMC)General Conway (USMC)Admiral Roughead (USN), and General Schwartz (USAF)) have submitted letters stressing that any action by Congress should only be taken after the Pentagon finishes its review the policy. And Sen. Roland Burris (D–IL) has sponsored an amendment that would allow the use of military facilities around the world for “pre-paid” abortions.

    According to Gallup‘s latest poll, only 18% of Americans now approve of the job Congress is doing. Reid’s shameless hijacking of the defense bill for his reelection purposes is exactly why the American people have such a low approval of Congress. As Senator Mitch McConnell (R–KY) rightly declared, “It’s time they put the liberal wish list on the shelf and focused on the priorities of the American people.”

      It is disgraceful what Reid is doing. Such blatant political posing to "buy" a voting block should be reason for removal for office. This means Republicans too. Laws/legislation should not be passed just to consolidate power. This is one reason why we need term limits. How the people of Nevada can vote for this guy seeing as how he is dead set on destroying the nation of which that state is a part.

      I have never believed, and I am even more adamantly against it these days, that it was appropriate to ear-mark things or to pass omnibus bills or hang any number of items onto bills for a completey different purpose. If something is worth passing (or not) then it deserves to stand on its own (or not). This would also end the stupid games that politicans play when they say "ooh, Senator X voted against children" or voted against defense or whatever – when they really voted against or for something else as a priority issue. This ought to all go away. If the bridge to nowhere in Alaska (an old example) is or was worth it – then vote on that – don't vote on it as a piece of something else. If Congress complains that this will be too much work for them to accomplish by splitting all of this up and creating more tasks then that is probably a good thing. If they don't have time to meddle in too much, that is good. Also the argument can be made that if it will create too much work for them now, then clearly, there was not enough attention being paid to these same issues in the past – and that is how we got stuck with so many ridiculous and pet programs. One last thing – if they would write a bill that is easy to read and simple to comprehend – instead of behaving like the damn bunch of lawyers that they mostly are – then we'd also have less of an issue for many things. If the bills were clear, they'd be easy to interpret and enforce – and if they were written poorly – then the Congress would just have to give it more thought on how to make it explicit and simple for all Americans to understand, without all the weasel words used in law – or the current practice of hiding surprises in a piece of legislation.

I recently wrote our Ohio Democratic Senator, Sharrod Brown asking him to vote against any part of the dream act; the reply is always the same; good for America, helps to register illegals, no matter your opinion, basically, I'm still going to vote YEA because we know better, blah, blah, blah. No matter the reality, facts or majority opinions, the Democrats won't do what is right according to the Constitution and actually are becoming the Anti-American Party or the American Socialist Party. Why anyone would want to associate themselves with this bunch is beyond me.

      For the life of me, I do not understand how amendments or riders can be legally added to a bill when they have absolutely nothing to do with the original intent of the bill. I would NEVER vote for a bill with such amendments added (which is what Congressman Ron Paul practices). Have the rest of congress NO CONSCIENCE in this matter. The meaning of ILLEGAL, IS THAT IT'S AGAINST THE LAW, we have had the last couple of years of unstopped, rewarded illegal immigration. To give citizenship and education to them while depriving our native born children of the same is unconsciousable. Mygrandchildren are having a hard time getting jobs, and being able to attend even a community college but the Sen from Nevada wants to make sure that the illegals can send their children to school then they get citizenship and then they can make sure that the parents and other illegals get a free passage.       I find this article incomplete. It begs the question – then what? What if the defense spending bill is defeated in order to defeat the added bill? What would happen then? Those poor congressmen might not use thier threat to go home early. They might have to stay at work and hammer out a stopgap appropriations bill for just the military.       As a military couple living in AZ we are frankly exhausted fighting this issue to secure our borders and all other issue for National Security which has always been the central issue here in AZ..

      Does this surprise anyone? It would seem evident that not supplying the military is a little consequence to these senators. I had to laugh as heard this morning Carl Levin mention that if this bill were to pass today it would not go into effect until the Defense Dept. finish their review in December!!! It's amazing that he obviously knows the outcome of the review weeks before completion.

      Don't forget that Obama promised the gay community that he would take care of them if elected. He's just keeping a promise…….thanks guy……..Can we assume that recruiting offices will be overwhelmed with these new recruits?

      Regarding the dream act……..had the public been following this bill they would be aware that ICE does not deport parents if an illegal gives birth in the U.S. The dream act just reinforces a current policy for babies regardless of legal status.

      @Ken, from Las Vegas – I think your statements show why socialism is a bad thing. Your statements come down to saying goverment should tell everyone how to live their lives (well, not everyone; only the people who aren't already living the "right" way). If you like population control, go to China; I hear they're all about that idea over there. I will also counter each of your issues with a reason capitalism is the answer.

      Wealth redistribution is great for the people who are are unlucky or lazy enough to not create wealth for themselves, but it punishes people who do work hard to become successful. If you punish the successful people, they'll go somewhere else, other people won't try to become successful, and then you won't have anyone with wealth to distribute.

      The problem with schools is not that there are too many kids. There are too few teachers, because unions have created inflated salaries for their members. If capitalism were allowed to work, underperforming teachers could be fired; the threat of being fired would persuade all teachers to give their best efforts to their students; and the money could be used to hire a better teacher.

      In a land of capitalism, there is no such thing as too many workers. When the supply of jobs is low, the demand is high and the seller (employers) can choose their price (salaries). This natural condition in the market allows someone to start or expand a business with lower expenses than other times and is one of the reasons small businesses can pull the entire country out of a recession.

      Healthcare costs are high, because the government programs that provide it are socialist entities. If more people provided their own healthcare, instead of relying on the government, Medicare and Medicaid wouldn't have to spend so much money. The cost of providing healthcare is increasing, because we consistently have new, effective tools, treatments, and drugs, because we have good insurance that will pay the creators for the benefits of said products, as long as their customers can pay their premiums.

      I may have simplified some of that, but I hope I got my points across. Socialism is not the answer.

      For another reason, take a look at The Congressional Progressive Caucus. About 80 congresspeople are members and they are very powerful.. Obviously, all members are Progressives with radical agendas. One of their stated tenents is open borders or no borders at all. It doesn't take a PHD in Political Science to see where this is intended to lead. One-World Order. Global Governance. Good-by United States of America sovereignty.

      The reason the politicians get away with this kind of "add on" is because until recently, the American people were silently giving them permission. WE were asleep at the wheel. We allowed them to drive us over the cliff. We voted by letters, R or D. We did not vote because we knew how they stood or how they have voted, or where they came from. We allowed politicians to be groomed from birth to have power until the death. Look at the "old guard" who have been re-elected over and over again simply on name recognition and party. So, for the last 40 years, the baby boomers have been too busy partying to take part in the political process. Well, thank God the party is over.I hope that this past two administrations have taught us that we cannot afford to ignore this elephant in the room. IMO, Bush was just as bad as Obama. He is definitely a RINO, but the party loyalty kept winning the day. Look at what is happening today of the elections in AK and DE. The old guard is furious and refusing to give up their power. Only when WE THE PEOPLE stay the course will anything change. It may not happen this time, but if we stay informed and pay attention, we can change the face of Washington as well as our state and local representation. We can never forget what we stand to lose if our very foundation crumbles beyond repair.

      It is our responsibility to bring back the truth in our history and civics classes. We need to educate our children in the truth, not re-written history. WE need to make sure our children are not indoctrinated to conform to this socialist/Marxist ideology, We need to speak out about our colleges and universities excoriating our students for having a different point of view.

      If we can accomplish all this, the America we are in jeopardy of losing may be saved. But, we must never allow complacency and ignorance to reign again. Contrary to the politicians, we are not too stupid to understand what they are doing. We are not too stupid to know what is good or bad for us. We have just been negligent. We cannot afford to be negligent ever again or they will come back to rule us.

      Anyone in this country that did not enter legally is a criminal. Our jails and prisons are filled beyond capacity now. What should we do, allow the incarcerated to go free as well? My ancestors were made citizens only after meeting the requirements of immigration law well over a hundred years ago.       The defense bill and the amnesty issue is dead in the water – for now. They did not get the 60 votes needed to bring the bill and it's DREAM amnesty tag-along up for debate.       I fully understand that those of us who have anti-american senators and congressmen are frustrated, and think that it does'nt do any good to write or call because they won't listen. Many of them come into government to help, and then they develop a GOD complex.

      With the new awakening of the American people, our representatives have been confused and bewildered. The media converses everyday about the meaning of the Tea Party, and they still can't get a handle on the reason for this movement. Since the Tea Party people seem to not be going away, the liberals have started attacking more vigorously. Why are they fighting against the principles of freedom, liberty, and the best experiment in the whole entire history of mankind? This puzzles me more than anything. Do they want everyone to be in poverty, and walking around with a ball and chain around our ankle?

      Too many of our elected representatives are acting like little spoiled brats and playground bullies. We elected these people, so we either let them get by with their immature behaviors, or we get them out of there, and elect someone who is educated on the constitution, principled, and has leadership maturity.

      Just because the American people have suddenly woken up and are now paying attention, doesn't necessarily result in immediate response from senators, and congressmen. I believe that many of them are playing a waiting game with the public. They are hoping that we will go away, and then they can return to doing whatever they want to. We will lose all ground that we may have gotten this far if this happens. I hope the we all stay alert and keep reminding them who is the real boss—We the People! When I write the representatives I know that I will get a form letter back that justifies their opinions, but it doesn't deter me.

      Thank you, Heritage, for being the faithful watchdogs of gov't goings-on…as a result of yesterday's Morning Bell, I emailed both my senators, though we already know where Jim DeMint stands…(gotta keep Graham's feet to the fire). I cheered when FOX reported the Defense Bill had been stalled!! Keep up the great work…there is SO MUCH we need to defend and gain back!

      This article only hit the high points, obscures facts, and does not cite any quotes from the individuals it attacks. Supposition, without fact or evidence does not make for a news article. Thats called obfustication.

      A more thorough, and detailed look at each item by an impartial reporter and publisher would serve the same purpose, without tainting your credibility.

      As a personal observation, from a combat veteran, I would happily welcome as a citizen anyone who voluntarily served a full term in the nations military, and aided in the defense of the country. That's not amnesty, that,s earning your citizenship.

      A Plan For A Real “American Dream Act” Bill & Counter Attack

      First bring back our soldiers from this Afghanistan war that is costly and going nowhere. Middle Eastern and Asians love to see us waste money and go broke fighting for freedom when they don’t really want it. This is their main weapon and we keep falling into their trap. Then we need to regroup military troops and military force to invade/overthrow Mexico’s government turning it into a U.S territory.

      The new land will be used as an industrial/business commerce zone. U.S citizens will be able to by property and have a dual citizenship between U.S and Mexico. Mexico will keep its current currency and there current government will be demoted to local municipal law enforcement as long as they surrender to the U.S.

      The U.S will be in full control of all laws, local law enforcement, and military control. The path to dual citizenship will require the illegal immigrants living in the U.S to serve in the U.S military for teen years… Along with completing the invasion/overthrow of Mexican government to expand U.S lands, business, and revive our economy. For Mexico citizen requesting to come to the U.S temporary worker programs and legal paths to citizenship & residence will be granted to those who qualify.

      This action is to liberate Mexico from its corrupt government that is destroying it self and the U.S slowly. It is also a test for them to redeem them selves for us to see, how much heart they have, how patriotic they are, and much they love this country including us, laws in all.

      The Dream Act is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of, next to Barack Obama being elected President of the United States and trying to run a Government for which he is not qualified. This procedure of tacking unrelated things on to a relevant and necessary bill has got to stop. One more Committee or a Function of an existing Committee that I would suggest is a equal bi-partisan group to oversee and to receive from the individual who tacked something on to a Bill the reasons and the relation and justification for the add-on, then make a ruling as to the bonafide reason for allowing "add ons." In my opinion, Senator Reid is a sneaky individual, but there are others like him. Lord help us to boot Mr. Reid out of Congress. He knows that the Republican representation, as a general rule, will vote for bills increasing/improving our Military. Others are also in favor of supporting our Military adequately, except for Obama.

      Playing politics with our men and women who have vowed to protect us and our Nation gauls by stomach.

      Amendments and Riders unrelated to the Original Bill is a sneaky way of doing business. It is underhanded and should be illegal. Senator Reid's Dream Act is his way of buying votes. It's Plain and Simple.
