  • Morning Bell: Let's Not Make a Deal

At the height of the debate over Obamacare, when the White House’s leftist allies were in full panic mode, The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein accused Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) of being “willing to cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.” Lieberman’s crime? He opposed including an expansion of Medicare in the health regulation bill. Now that the President’s signature foreign policy achievement, the New START nuclear agreement with Russia, is on the ropes, the left is again back to their hyperbolic ways. Ploughshares Fund president Joseph Cirincione told The Associated Press last week: “A delayed ratification with a close vote would be a blow to U.S. leadership around the world. People would doubt the President’s ability to negotiate other agreements.”

The histrionics are the result of a sudden surge of concerns over the treaty that started with a blast from Mitt Romney who declared the treaty “Obama’s worst foreign policy mistake.” Sens. John Kerry (D-MA) and Carl Levin (D-MI) attempted to shoot down Romney’s concerns, but their responses raised more questions than they answered. Romney has responded to his critics by identifying eight problems with New START that must be resolved before the Senate can vote on the treaty. We’ll focus on three today:

New START Weakens Our Missile Defense Capabilities: The Washington Post editorial board asserted yesterday that “attempts by Moscow to insert [limits on missile defense] into the treaty failed.” This is just plain false. First, even the Post admits that the preamble links missile defense and offensive nuclear weapons. The Post says that this was also true of previous STARTs. But not only is the language in this preamble stronger, and not only has the Russian leadership said that any increase in our missile defense system would be considered a breach of the treaty, but Article V of the treaty specifically limits our ability to convert ICBM and submarine-launched ballistic missile launchers into defensive interceptors. The Post is completely silent about this fact.

New START Fails to Maintain Our Nuclear Forces: The Post does concede that our nuclear weapons our “in need of renewal, as are the laboratories and industrial complex that sustain it.” But then they claim, “the Obama administration accepts this priority,” which is odd since President Obama has promised not to develop any new nuclear weapons. The Obama administration is promising Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) $80 billion in spending on the “nuclear weapons complex” over the next decade, but no legislation has been produced. Any such promise would have to be passed by the House. Do you trust Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to spend $80 billion on nuclear weapons? Your answer to that question tells you all you need to know about the credibility of New START’s nuclear modernization claims.

New START’s Verification Procedures Are Inadequate: The Obama administration is telling skeptical Senators that “rejecting the treaty would leave the two countries dangerously uncertain about each other’s arsenals.” But New START’s verification terms are so weak that they add little informational value. Paula A. DeSutter, the former U.S. assistant secretary of state for verification, compliance and implementation, noted in a Heritage lecture last month: “The Russians can do so much under this treaty to advance and expand their strategic forces… [yet] our ability to determine whether or not they are doing that and whether it violates the treaty is very, very low. The degree of verifiability is very low.” Worse, the Obama administration admitted in Congressional testimony last week that they do not even care if the Russians cheat on the treaty.

All the pressure to blow past the critics, cut backroom deals and get the treaty ratified ought to raise huge red flags. New START has had less than half the number of hearings that treaties are normally subjected to, and the pace for approval certainly is trying to outpace any nuclear arms pact the Senate has ever considered.  Not only is the speed with which it is being pushed through unprecedented, the administration continues to withhold key documents, including the treaty negotiating record. This is no time for conservatives in the Senate to offer lemming-like support for President Obama’s arms control agenda.

Our president (no capital P for him) and his administration are trying to destroy our country from the inside out…as far as I am concerned they are committing treason against the American people…any ideology that proposes the people they govern are too stupid to make up their own minds about their government and their governments activities is extremely dangerous. Our president does NOT have respect for OUR heritage, our founding father's beliefs and he sure doesn't have respect for the constitution. He is by-passing Congressional hearings and appointing radical leftists to all kinds of positions of power…he is the worst thing that has happened to our country. I pray Americans will wake up and fight against this administrations insidious plans for this country…it is no longer a republic..

    4. Blair, Franconia, NH says:

We should put a STOP to the new START. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in

1979, the Senate said no SALT.

    5. Steven Coy Westminst says:

Do we have any Republicans with Balls? I don't hear any one in the Republican Party ever saying anything about anything this Administration is doing. We need to vote all new Republicans in office and maybe we will get some Americans in office who will fight this Communist Government. Impeach The Kenyan Born Radical Muslim America Hating Bastard !!!!!!!

    6. Mary.... WI says:

The way I see it this country is vulnerable to attack from both foreign and domestic sources. Anyone else getting that feeling?

    7. Lloyd Scallan (New O says:

Just remember, Obama and his lackeys will stop at nothing and will do or say anything to get their socialist agend passed the American people. That includes

Obama's disastrous foreign policies. If we all recognize this fact, we would

better understand that they delibertly lie and decieve to accomplish their goal.

    8. Robin, Springfield says:

American leadership has been questioned around the world for nearly 2 decades now. Partisan politics makes it so. We don't like what Clinton or Obama try to do as much simply because of the D by their political affiliation, instead of because they behave stupidly. They don't like what Bush, or Bush, try to do as much simply because of the R by their political affiliation, instead of because they too sometimes behaved stupidly.

I can't think of a time in US history when our country has been more politically polarized, except before the Civil War, can you?

    9. Vicki Bryson, Gruver says:

Where are the Conservatives????????? Are they just going to set back again as they have on stimulus, bailouts, healthcare, financial reform, Kagan????????

    10. James A - Longdrycre says:

Obama and his loyal allies remind me of the Democrats in the 1930's. Uncle Joe could be trusted because FDR thought he could charm him. At Yalta, Uncle Joe

drank FDR and WC under the table and walked off with Eastern Europe for nearly a century.

Obama actually believes he is "gifted." Check the horse and you will find Obama is toothless. He just thinks he has teeth and does not have a sway back. The

Vaunted One is fearless when it comes to our freedom as a Nation; after all,

he and the Marvelous Michelle and the Democrats have fall out shelters to

escape to. The rest of us do not.

    11. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

If it's harmful for America, Obama is for it!

    12. RGVBOY Port Isabel, says:

Our president is a loser, an idiot, incompetent fool! Elected by a multitude of fools!

    13. Lyle, Twin Falls, Id says:

Mr. Obama and his minions: The things that Obama and his helpers hope to gain out "S T A R T"; are what he has been about and will continue to be about. It is destruction; destruction of the United States of America; not because the USA is Holy, or Worthy; but that the USA has the best hope/chance of representing the Truth of God's Word around the globe. Evil must at least give it's best effort to destroy as much that might become good before the KING comes to rule and reign. Obama is not the Anti-Christ anymore that he is the messiah; he does represent a TYPE of the Anti-Christ; in small stature he represents who the Anti Christ will look and act like; destruction, lies, deceipt and ultimately spirtitual death, thus the devil wins some.

    14. Marnott, Tx says:

One feels so helpless and hopeless watching as he dismantles our country and gives away all our fathers, husbands and sons have fought and died to preserve. God help America survive the hope and change of this man and this administration.

    15. toledofan says:

I think no matter the logic or the history of previous arms pacts, this administration would rather cut and run rather than stand and fight. At the end of the day, or until something bad happens, they won't change their position and they would rather sign a weak and lopsided deal rather than stand firm and do what is best for America. It's obvious from all the mis-steps so far, bowing to foriegn dignataries, the lack of a response to N. Korea, Iran, the snubbibng of Israel, and the approach of not making Muslims mad by calling them terrorists, this administration doesn't care about weakening America, all they really care about is how they appear to others.

    16. West Texan says:

Whether small arms or nuclear arsenals, the far left fails to realize these devices are not inherently evil. It's the malicious actors and/or regimes behind the trigger. Contrary to Obama's twisted international message, America's constitution and culture supports people's right to as safe an environment as is possible. Weapons held by private citizens and freedom supporting governments provide such security. It's only when this deterrence is no longer available that evil is free to prevail without fear of reprisal. Obama's START treaty could easily duplicate a scenario akin to his hometown's crime riddled back streets. Let's "HOPE" we can all survive long enough to elect this guy's replacement in 2012.

    17. Carol says:

The criminals in DC are destroying our Nation. Americans had better vote them out in November if our nation is to survive

    18. Walter Brown, NY-Exp says:

Amen! Let's not make a deal. Great article!

    19. H.L. Kuhn says:

Obama's "deals" should be confined to "The Price is Right". With his foreign policy experience limited to ordering Chinese take out and his negotiating skills relegated to securing food stamps and rent subsidizes for the entitlement crowd in Chicago, he should do what is best for Americans and fall on his sword. As a leader he is a joke both at home and around the world.

    20. F. D. O'Toole, says:

Obama and his leftist colleagues appear to resent the primacy of the USA around the world. They wish for a humbler country, just one of many…nothing special. Our military might works contrary to that desire and so it must be restrained. The problem is, this wordview can get us all killed.

    21. Gary Alaska/Nevada says:

Has anyone checked the hierloom antique furniture in the Whitehouse? Is it still there? Cigarette burns, puke stains. Lots of parties. Come in taxi, leave in a moving van. I aways hated horror movies. Now I seem to be stuck in one with no off switch.

    22. Renny MD says:

We better get on our knees and look to the heavens, because there is no answer down here right now!!!

    23. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

Regarding the so-called "New START", and the things in and behind it, we certainly should not make such a deal with the Russians, as it should remind of history, particularly in this case the history of the fall of every other Republic before ours, including ancient Greece, "the cradle of Democracy".

And now evidently also including our Republic, the fall of which is, as always, being sought, promoted, and increasingly brought about by people and regimes both within and without whose attitudes and agenda are hostile to it, and designed to impose a so-called "new" world order, same as others in history.

Indeed such people as the Obama and Russian regimes are evidently working to do so again through various means, including "negotiating" away our freedoms, those of others elsewhere, our promises to ourselves and others to assure freedom, and our ability to keep them, which of course includes to "pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any for, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty", as even John F. Kennedy at least said.

So now of course, through such as the so-called "New START", Obama, his so-called "Administration", and his accomplices in Congress, are making it so that both our friends and enemies alike have that much less reason to believe that America has the honor, integrity, and will to be a reliable friend and unbeatable foe, which of course always spells the end of a nation or republic, including this Republic and thus also the end of the freedoms enjoyed by ourselves and others, this time probably forever, unless we get such as Obama and those of his ilk out of power as soon as possible.

    24. Timpclimber Provo, U says:

Does the name Neville Chamberlain begin ringing in your mind when you read the New Start Treaty? Or was the recent deportation/trade of ten Russian deep plant spies a Hollywood script. Or how the Russians have transferred sophisticated military technology to Iran. Reading W. Chambers and other soviet related history will make you skeptical about Russian intentions. New Start has the verification teeth of an earth worm. Oh, how I hope Americans wake up and put the brakes on this group of dangerous clowns in the Capital.

    25. Don, Texas says:

If anyone is in doubt about Obamas intentions to weaken America…….all I can say is your dreaming, your hopeing, your laboring under false pretenses. Wake up and face the truth.

It seems the ONLY spending that this administration does not believe is stimulative is spending for defense. Gee, how much must you hate this country to come up with these policies?

    28. Drew Page, IL says:

There once was a man named Barack, who built us a Doomsday Clock.

In North Korea he stumbled. . In Iran he fumbled.

      Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.

    29. Peyton, a Libertaria says:

Our deterrent is only as strong as our will. Since the president can only negotiate the treaty, WE, THE PEOPLE, must rely on the Senate to do their constitutionally directed role of treaty -

He (the President) shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur.

Unfortunately, just as with SCOTUS appointments, our Senators have allowed the Executive branch to usurp the entire process. No one wants to rock the boat.

This is why WE, THE PEOPLE, need to ROCK THE VOTE this November. We need to elect people to go to D.C. that REPRESENT our interests, and not just those of a party or PAC.

As Tim, from Provo said, Neville Chamberlain is living in OUR WHITE HOUSE!

    30. Suzanne-Florida says:

No surprise! After three years of the Bush State Department negotiating with Poland and Czech governments to support defense systems aimed at Iran the Obama government casually informed them that we changed our minds ……..thanks anyway. Anyone with a brain cell knew the fix was in & Russia outfoxed this naive no nothing president.

One can only hope that the treaty doesn't come up for a vote this year.

    31. whitneymuse (Souther says:

How we got this Barak Person even Arafat feels he passed too soon.

    32. Diane St Louis says:

I would like to "sign a petition" against this but we're quickly learning that petitions, town hall meetings, marches on WA, etc. mean nothing to the Obama empire. They don't recognize "we the people", we're too stupid to have valid input. They literally are clowns performing at our nation's expense.

    33. Bob, North Carolina says:

Why would anyone with half a brain think that this president gives a hoot about this country's defense system when he refuses to pledge allegiance to our flag? It is not just a cloth rag, it is a symbol of our country, the most exceptional and freest country in the history the world. His method of "governing" is why the American Revolution happened. I believe he is very knowledgeable about his twisted ways of thinking, but he hasn't got a clue about what made this country the shining city on the hill

    36. Eugene Kupstas, Kins says:

Progressives by their nature despise citizens empowered in any way — armed, knowledgeable, thinking, speaking, protesting. They use our complaints with nature the way a matador steers a bull into going where he wants. They organize people with like minds (many of them good and sincere, many otherwise) into protests on the taxpayers' streets. They court our enemeis and look down their noses at our best allies. They despise democratic movements and give evil empires free rein. This version of START is another instance where our President has held back his own country while letting the Russians get their way, as usual.

I might add that Mitt Romney would make a grand Secretary of State.

    37. Waldport, Oregon says:

For now,, all we can do is find like-minded representatives and donate to them or at least vote for them. Continue to email/fax/write/call congress and your local representatives and tell them how you're feeling. Join the Tea Party or other conservative groups that keep us informed. Read, read, read! Get informed so you can answer those who disagree. Most of us know what is coming. There are so many close-minded people but some of them WILL change their minds if we can explain things well. Remember to pray for our leaders and for those who might still have a chance to do the right thing. Whatever you do, don't give up! That's what they want. Hopelessness. Luke-warmedness. (I think this should be a word, if it isn't!)

    38. RONNIE WHITE says:

WITH ALL OF THE MATERIAL THAT SEEMS TO BE COMING OUT ON THE WAY THAT WE ARE FIGHTING WARS.WHY WOULD WE TAKE A CHANCE ON OUR NUCLEAR CAPABILITY. IT WILL BE OUR OUR LAST STAND WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE FAILS

    39. Vic Smith, Barlow, O says:

Obama negotiating with Medvedev (Russia's #2) instead of Putin is laughable. If Putin wanted to negotiate, would he talk to Biden? That's the equivalent of what the US just did with this treaty.

    40. GUY ABATE FLORIDA says:

It fits right in with what we can come to expect. The Feds (Obama) are suing Arizona on the basis of the potential problems that just might occur, and that they cannot let that happen. Even to the extent of the feat of what might happen if a dad were to take HIS KID OUT FOR ICE CREAM. Yet when it comes to the almost certain conflicts, resentments and anger that will take place if and when that mosque goes up at ground zero.. Well that is okay.. Think about the unbelievable hypocracy
