Last Friday’s Department of Labor jobs report, which showed private sector job creation fell by 190,000 between April and May of this year, jolted markets worldwide including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which fell 3.2% Friday to its lowest level since early February. In total the U.S. economy has now lost a net of 2.2 million jobs since President Barack Obama signed his stimulus bill, and his administration is now 7.2 million jobs short of what he promised his $862 billion stimulus would help create by 2010. This morning on MSNBC, former Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-FL) pressed prominent Keynesian economist and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs on whether it was too early to declare President Obama’s stimulus a failure. Scarborough had to ask the question twice, but Sachs finally relented: “It did fail.”
For objective observers the failure of President Obama’s $862 billion stimulus has become increasingly difficult to deny. But not for the White House. Last week, Vice President Joe Biden told Charlie Rose on PBS that the stimulus was “an absolute success.” Betraying a common perception about unemployment, Biden told Rose: “[W]e lost 8 million brand new jobs … since … 8 million brand new jobs since we hit the skids. On top of the 6% that were already unemployed. It took us several years to get there, it is going to take several years to get back to that number.” That is not quite true. In fact, the American economy has shed 55.4 million jobs since the recession began in the First Quarter of 2008. But at the same time the economy has only added 46.5 million jobs. Putting the two together produces the net approximate 8 million jobs lost that Biden referenced.
But isn’t net jobs all that really matters? Why should anyone care exactly how many jobs were lost and created since all that really matters is the net number of Americans who are no longer employed? Here’s why: despite an unemployment high of just 6.4%, more jobs were lost in the first seven quarters of the 2001 recession than were lost in the first seven quarters of this recession. How is that possible? How could job losses have been worse in 2001 but unemployment so much higher now? Weak job creation. The latest Bureau of Labor and Statistics data show that employers have created 8.6 million fewer new jobs this time around than they did almost a decade ago. Heritage Senior Labor Policy Analyst James Sherk estimates that lower job creation accounts for 65 percent of the recession’s decreased employment.
Our nation’s unemployment rate is hovering near 10% not because of record job losses, as Biden suggests, but because of record job non-creation. Private sector employers have gone on strike. Contrary to what the President’s economic wizards and New York Times columnists believe, massive government deficit spending does not stimulate job creation. President Obama does not have a secret vault of money he can just throw at the American people. The resources the government spends come from the economy. When the government increases spending, it crowds out the resources that business owners could have invested in their enterprises. Private investment falls sharply when government spending rises. According to Sherk, annual private fixed nonresidential investment has fallen by $327 billion since the recession started— a 19 percent drop. Less private investment means less hiring.
And then there is the rest of the Obama agenda that has created, and is creating, significant economic uncertainty: Obamacare, EPA carbon regulations, financial regulations and impending tax hikes. Renouncing these policies, and canceling the rest of the stimulus, would do more to spur private sector job creation than anything this White House has done so far.
Quick Hits:
- Two New Jersey men were arrested late Saturday for allegedly planning to fight in Somalia with al-Shabab, an extremist group allied with al-Qaeda.
- Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said Sunday that efforts to cap and clean up the largest oil spill in American history would stretch into the fall.
- Led by President Obama’s former communications director Anita Dunn, leftist foundations, unions and corporations plan to spend $25 million to sell the public on Obamacare.
- According to Gallup, roughly 6.2 million Mexican adults say they would like to move permanently to the United States if given the chance.
- Frightened by what their constituents might say, Democrats are refusing to hold public town halls.

One correction, Obama DOES have a secret vault of money, it is YOUR wallet. Corporate America understands that and is keeping their powder dry. They see the unprecedented spending and deficits and know there is going to be a reckoning some day soon. Once the efficiencies of this jobless "recovery" run dry earnings are going to plummet as the consumer learns to tighten their belt. Buckle up.
Leftist economic ideology dies a slow death. Under Obama and his czars, academic economic orthodoxy submits grudingly to reality.
Amity Shlaes's "The Forgotton Man" and Wolfgang Schivelbusch "Three New Deals," a study of the similar philosophies of Hitler, Mussolini, and FDR

The stimulus has not worked, will not work, never has worked. Only the dogmatic hope for different results the next time.
private industry will not create jobs when health care cost will rise under BOH, cap and trade tax is on the horizon, another cost to business….so where's the incentive to create jobs….China & India of course….nice change
If this President and his administration had one scintilla of decientcy, logic or understanding of what leadership means, they could have created jobs the traditional way which is proven. No, they are so hell bent in finding ways to increase unionization of America's workforce, in an environment where little employment exists, that they have lost focus on the concerns and problems facing our nation. Biden stating the stimulus was "an absolute success" is like me saying the Flyers won last night. Guess he and Obama say it enough they believe it in the fantasy world they live. If they could do just one thing, just one, take Rahm Emanuel's "don't let a good tragety go to waste" logic and maybe they could create more jobs in the Gulf region using BP as the employer to clean up the spill. This will be employment for years to come and it may stimulate growth in the areas affected. No, forget that, SEIU would probably want to organize those employees and call the union, Oil Became A Monumental Action or OBAMA. This country is burning and this administration is a joke.
Everyone knows that the StimUSELESS was just a plan to "not let a crisis go to waste." The Democrats pulled out their 20-year old wish list of pork barrel projects, dusted it off and slipped it into this sham of a bill. I actually get pissed when I drive by a minor road construction project that has a big a$$ sign (frequently larger than the project itself) proclaiming that it is being funded by "The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act." What a complete waste of my money.
The so called "stimulus" has been tried in other economies enough to know it doesn't work, never works (Japan), can't work. And only creates more and deeper, longer lasting problems. In this case it's the perfect "crisis" for the Marxist enemies of the ONLY system that does work, the Free Market, to overturn that system. They will bathe this earth in war, strife, another Age of Darkness.
My grandkids are studying physics and Chinese.
Hear, Hear!
However, the one thing I've been noting for 18 months has been the apparent ideal of this administration to prolong the recession as much as possible in order to create the crisis atmosphere where it can create its Alinsky-style change in the chountry's governance. It doesn't take an economist to tell you that starving the small and mid sized business market of credit won't hobble hiring and expansion. It doesn't take a Ph.D. to tell you that creating high levels of cost risk for new employees chills the hiring cycle.
We saw this even before the radical gave the Inauguration address – and he and the Gremlin from Chicago will continue on this path either until they've transformed the US or sufficiently many Americans begin acknowledging that the entitlement culture that this administration wants to create, meaning perpetual office holding for one thing, will not work.
As Margaret Thatcher said, sort of, "Socialism works great until you run out of other people's money."
I read this weekend past that Anita Dunn "One of my favorite persons is Moa ( chinese murderer) will back Charlie Crist. Its
good by C.C for me and I pray every patriot in Florida.
The stimulus didn't work not because it failed to create intended jobs, but because it was never intended to create jobs in the first place. The stimulus, just like Obamacare and Cap & Tax, was intended to redistribute wealth. Nothing less. Nothing more.
good report, right on
It just seems that as the administration continues on its bumbling ways and concerns on policy direction become exceedingly apparent and failures continue to mount in many economic areas, our leading party of “geniuses and problem solvers” continues to echo the refrains of ultimate success. Even though it is clearly apparent that the policies are unsuccessful and work against the obvious direction we need to go the Democrats continue to sound off that its policies successes are resoundingly effective. Are they blind, ignorant or habitual liars?
Good to hear Columbia Univ. Jeffrey Sachs admitted the stimulus failed. Now if Obama would admit it and repeal Obamacare, financial reform, NOT do anything on energy reform and build the fence between Mexico and the US this country just might get back on track. But I'm just dreaming……it's just NOT part of "the agenda" to bring this country to it's knees.
Sounds like a sane explanation yet what I do not understand is why the American public at large continues to believe this scenario of borrow, print and spend is going to change unless Congress says "NO MORE"! and in my opinion that just will not happen. Are we waiting for the knock out punch to come when the Treasury bubble breaks and the dollar takes a nose dive and doesn't recover? In the end, the average American citizen is going to be left completely bewildered.
That's just it. Obama cares nothing about the private sector.Putting people to work in the private sector creates TAX PAYERS. Revenue for the government to hopefully apply to the debt. But Obama would rather tax the evil rich and redistribute the wealth than create more tax payers. Paying people to be un-employeed does nothing but reward that behavior and reinforce it. Small business is not creating jobs because they are scared to death of the quixotic behavior of this administration. Why borrow money and expand if you don't know if you will even be in business this time next year?
But the Great Captain of the Maelstrom cannot renounce these policies, and cannot cancel the rest of the stimulus, because it most assuredly is not, and never has been, his purpose "to spur private sector job creation," in the first place. Quite the contrary. Enacting any policies that would turn the fate of the economy back over to those miserable capitalists in the private sector could very well reverse the spin of the voracious vortex over which he so gleefully presides. What fun would that be?
This was a great job of reporting. Now, investigate why the Obama administration would deliberately continue down this path.
The "guvment" can not keep pending record amounts of money. The American people have to go back to work, and the only way that will happen is if small business is able to expand. The current trend by obama and clan is to defeat small business, hike taxes to pay for thier uncontrolled spending, and keepm blowing smoke by telling all that they are doing a great job. I will give them some credit, they have created jobs, all at the tax payer expense, jobs with the "guvment" ,all in unions and with no regard of how to continue paying the salaries of these employees. We have to take back our country and the econo0my. These thugs must be defeated at the polls in November.
Well, the Democrats have had their chance and it's obvious to most of us that what they did, waste lots of money, probably caused more angst that if we had done nothing. It's even more obvious that the policies and their policies put in place over the past (19) months have made our economy, and the worlds economy, even weaker; healthcare, cap and trade policies – EPA mandates, money policies and socialization has made for a weaker America. It is clear that we are and have been the balance for the world, look at all the turmoil; Isreal under constant attack, N. Korea sinking subs, Iran walking around like they carry a big stick, Venezula, the crash of Greece, Spain, Europe in turmoil, healtcare reform, taxes everywhere, spending out of control, etc. The reason, no leadership from Washington, no can do spirit, too much corruption, everything is politics and party lines, nothing for America. The Democrats have finnaly outdid themselves.
This is looking more and more like FDR's first administration. He is Obama's role model. By following him, Barack is getting the same miserable results. Can somebody get across to him that lower taxes, not socialistic government spending, is what will get us out of this recession?
It just goes to show that Mr. Obama, never having run anything or been in charge of anything, has no idea what he is doing. Even President Carter who was not the best President, was the Governor of Georgia and had "in charge" experience. Mr. Obama has never run anything so in his mind, all of the socialist policies of his should work! Only an inept, totally moronic individual would think that the government spending money like a drunken sailor woudl help the economy.
Atlas has indeed Shrugged.

This government is damned if they do, damned if they don't. Doesn't matter what they do or don't do, Conservatives like the HF are going to condemn them. I note that they don't condemn the private sector for not creating more jobs, they blame the government again. But then blame the government for trying to help people that are out of work that the private sector didn't create jobs for in the first place.
You can't have it both ways. Get over the hypocrisy and go back to your holes. Conservatism is the last refuge of tyranny before it erupts into full-blown treason.
I do not agree with the tenet that the Simulus has failed! If you are looking for private sector jobs coupled with people doing what they want, it has failed. however, if your plan was to destroy the private sector, grow government, pay off your friends and in general use the monies for your own purposes, the stimulus has been a success for the adminstration!
The thing killings me, is how business are being led to the slaughter without a single fight! no one is willing to step up and openly mention what's going on and how it affecting them, and the people they serve. FDR said "we nothing to fear but fear itself"! if we fear the government we will be dragged down the road to an unacceptable end. The attitude of; as long as it doesn't effect me, I'm ok! Is exactly what the radicals are look for! this way before you wake up, it's over!
We need to stop allowing the government get a pass on everything, this includes the media! The government needs to be accountable for every penny spent! Especially, the Stimulus money!
We had all better wake up to the reality about what's happening to our country. Obama "stimulus bill" failed because it was written by the Apollo Alliance, which is a collection of radical, left-wing, socialist, Marxist, and Communis from the 60's groups such as SDS, Weathermen, CommunistUSA, and the list goes on. Why can't we understand this bill was never entended to "stimulate" our economy, but always intended to add another nail in the coffin of our economical system. These radicals (including Obama) have made it clear they will do or say anything that will promote their agenda to drag this nation into what they actually believe in, a complete socialist society where the government controls every aspect of our lives. Joe Biden is just another one of their pawns.
Obamanomics is based on print baby, print or there is no tomorrow so spend as much as you want to day. We need a N.J. governor Christy at the helm of the nation not an incarnation of Woodrow Wilson.
The administration is doing exactly what it said it would do The only way to stop this is to defund their programs. We need to take over the house in order to get this done. Stop all funds for the EPA, education, energy and obomacare. Pass only stand alone bills and if that means shutting down this government then lets do it before the country is destroyed. I live on a fixed income and am retired, if I have to forgo my social security check it will be worth it to save this country for my grandchildren.
Regards, James Michael
Small businesses are holding on by the skin of their teeth. Bringing family back to work and eliminating a job.
New hires will only come when they begin to see an increase in the n umber of people using their services. Not likely under today's circumstances with Government taxing everything they can, and no assurance at all of any kind of regulatory stability which is a requirement to plan for the future.
This atmosphere where where you can't trust what's being said, has eroded confidence in this administration among the business community, and with individuals…..thus the tea party's where regardless of political registration, color or religion, people all share the same distrust of their government and it's ability to manage anything.
We have lost stability in out government, lost any kind of professionalism in the administration and management of Government Agency's except for defense, and lost confidence that the current administration has has any concept of commen sense or logic to it's decision making.
We've also lost the respect of our allies and our enemy's, and this perceived weakness is the 800 lb. gorilla looming over any future forecast you might structure.
Try telling this to a Democrat. I sent one of my long-time Democrat friends a short, innocuous piece about the Arizona border problem and he responded by demanding that I stop sending him my "right win detritus" and remove his name from my mailing list. I fear they're all on edge abot the outcome of tomorrow's election, and I hope they get pasted, espescially the way they shoved that
super-expensive health care bill down our throats.
What does not show up in the unemployment statistics are the number of people who have exhausted their unemployment compensation benefits. Once this happens, these people are no longer considered as "unemployed" even though they are.
Then there are those who lost they regular, well paying jobs and who have taken part-time or temporary jobs, or minimum wage jobs in order to make some kind of an income. These people don't count as "unemployed" either.
So, forgetting about all these people who don't count, maybe Biden and Obama are right. The Stimulus worked and "Everything's Coming Up Roses".
Great post, but I would like to interject that immigration reform will also be a divisive issue when it is brought up for debate. President Obama was dealt a horrible hand when he ascended the presidency, but sadly, his administration has made a number of missteps — largely ignored the needs of Main Street.
FACT WITH INTENT TO INFORM: HF will not post any view that provides a dissent from their own biased view of reality. This means that HF is guilty of slanting any information to meet their own agenda while attempting to slap down the opposition for doing the same thing and proclaiming themselves to be unbiased, honorable, and truthful.
What frauds. Will start airing this loud and wide. Not that it will be a surprise to anyone that HF practices the same tyranny they wish the government to impose on private citizens. Conservatives always wish to control others thoughts and actions rather than look at their own. I'm not a supporter of Obama's direction, but I thank God that there isn't anyone that thinks like HF in the White House. That would be even worse.
John Maynard Keynes, the Father of Keynesian Economics, was wrong. Economists
like Milton Friedman and Arthur Laffer, the inventor of the Laffer Curve, have proved it. Keynsians believe that you have to spend yourself into debt to get out of debt. Does that make sense?
It would have made more sense to send every family in the United States a check for $30,000.
Reading some of the pro Obama comments reminds me of the old saying "you can't fix stupid". How could anyone in their right mind think the Obama policies are good for this country. Obama is totally incompetent.
Without the benefit of researc tools availble to the media, my seat-of-the-pants reaction to all this is the word "uncertainty". As long as private industry does not know how much increased costs (health care/cap and trade/corporate taxes) are going to diminish corporate income, there is no way that the private sector is going to invest in new employment. I do not think that Obama undestands the corporate mindset and the corporate chain of command. Corporations are owned by shareholders. Corporate loyalty has to flow toward those shareholders and fiscal irresponsibility (call that hiring people without knowing the underlying costs)is a new job killer of the first proportion.
To Jim in TX — What are you talking about? HF seems to be publishing your comments, even as you criticize them for not doing so.
In case you missed it, HF is a conservative think tank. It is going to appeal to those who are of a similar mind set. Exactly what is it that Heritage has said that is factually incorrect? If HF was the tyranical bunch you claim, they wouldn't be posting your criticisms. I don't understand what tyranny you suppose that HF wishes the government to impose on U.S. citizens. Help me out here, be specific.
Conservatives want less government control in the lives of citizens, not more.
I was working for a family run business that had four locations when I started in 2006. One office closed in 2007. Now, there is only one office and only a hand full of empolyees. I am now unempolyeed (as of 5/31/2010). I found out three weeks before the office closed. I have had two job interviews but no job offers. Today I just filed for unemployment insurnece. I will be counted in the next stat.

Mr. President:
It is clear to anyone not living under a rock that you have an all out assault against the American people and the Constitution. This is evident because you insist on a social/economic justice agenda that will destroy our economy and our country. The spending will give our children and grand children a much lower standard of living. Your health care reform, opposed by 70% of Americans, will lay waste to our existing health care system and bankrupt an already bankrupt Medicare program. You continue to push forward with so called job bills which is actually a slush fund to buy votes. The only thing stimulated is democratic cronies. People are really hurting out here and you refuse to face the real solutions to our major issues.
1. The economy would take a major up tick if you would go on national TV and tell the country you are no longer going to pursue your agenda such as YOUR health reform or the scientifically false based Cap and Trade bills. Either one would bankrupt this country.
2. Health care reform: Major TORT reform, purchase insurance across state lines and portable insurance for starters.
3. Keep your hands off our kids. It is becoming evident to more and more Americans that the progressives are attempting to brain wash our children. You folks DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT.
You know the items listed above would take a major step toward correcting our major problems but that isn’t your administrations agenda. So the people of this country continue to suffer while you continue your grand experiment.
Your administration is not fooling the vast majority of people. Your progressive agenda will not work….it has been proven time and again throughout history.
The best you could do for this country is resign. We do not want you or your progressive friends anywhere near our country or our children’s future.
No matter how you cut it this obstinate and arrogant man who is our president knows full well that his policies have failed and I am convinced that that is exactly his plan, to bankrupt the economy of this country, to broaden his power and to transform this nationinto a socialist state! This man startedoutwithprecisely that plan and heis implementin g it! All Icansay,is …. Godhelpsus if we don't defeat him and his party this november!

Such a juvenile oversimplification.

Really? Good for you. That means you might begin to get it someday.

Gentlemen: you keep making the same mistake over-n-over again … BHO, CZARS and the back-up throw down POTUS Joseph von Biden know exactly how to manage the decline of America without waking up the masses and they are excelling in their task thanks to the "Pravda" siblings of the Media shills happily programing the half-truths to the gullible and highly entertained masses of mentally gelatinous society that has an aversion to critical thinking and making hard choices.
The summary is the decline of a Republic, skip the temporal success of USSR and go straight to the Cuban model. You know the paragon of auto and health examples that the Kalifornia legislators so greatly admire.
Jim from Texas you make the Left Proud. By declaring that the businesses are somehow in cahoots to stifle growth is sheer brilliance in tactic of pure unadulterated ignorance. Private business shrinks and grows under the mandates of LAW set by the current administration. EPA policies, etc. Companies that have to comply with increasingly stringent demands and higher taxes creates an environment of slow growth to stagnant growth. The ignorant commentary of blaming conservative show another point of utter ignorance of history. Where Capitalism has sustained and grown this nation for over two hundred years. And just how successful has your Cuban style of wealth redistribution worked for other countries? Ah yeah right you must be a native Houstonian or Austin lib; sorry folks we have to endure these types here also. Like the former Houston Mayor making Houston a sanctuary city yeah that's working great too…. Good luck hey help us out and the economy buy a ticket to Cuba, the travel agent gets a commission you help the economy and when you get there you can demand your rights and live the good life…..like Sean Connery in that famous Cuban movie…..what was it now……
It took Hitler near a decade for his dream of a riegn of 1,000 years to end. It has only taken Obama less than eighteen months to end his own Empire. We need to stop him at every move, or he will continue to drag this Republic down.
I do not believe that more jobs and the economy can improve until we have a different President, Administration and Congress. The national debt is out of control. Businessowners are concerned because Obama appears to be anti-business. Also, now they have discovered that they can get the same productivity with less workers. Some that I know have failed and other businesses are just hanging by a thread. Obama is not creating jobs. He is, however, not protecting our borders and still allowing illegals to come and cost taxpayers untold dollars in education, health, law enforcement and welfare costs.
In the world of reality no one wants the things that make reality sustainable to fail…so there fore those that lie, breed falsehood and deception are always a good thing to hope fail because then reality and the things that sustain its value remain solid.
Keynesian economics is a defrauding of worth based on half truths and deception, Marxism and socialism are of the same intellectual schooling.
Anybody who still thinks that hoping a liar, and a deceivers failure will be tantamount to America failing doesn't understand the greatness that we have maintain by simply being truthful and sensible people all these years.
No one I know is hoping Obama fails; we accept that he is a failure in ideology and principles and are just waiting for the truth to reveal itself to everyone else who is too dim to recognize it.
Failure is proven by lack of positive achievement and the state of mind of trying to drive a square peg through a round hole over and over again; Obama has proved his methods, his ideology and his brutish desire to take away self governing from the people and offer serfdom in return…..only the blind can not see this…but the truth is revealing it for them anyway.

So the half dozen done by Bush saved the world? Why is it every Republican president breaks the sh*t out of the US economy and you guys keep trying to point fingers at Democratic presidents?
My #1 priority is putting bread on the table. If we were constantly stuck with half retarded Republicans in office I would not be able to do this. Never mind that most social policies by the Democrats are horrible. I need to eat.

Could you clarify please? What resources do business owners lack because the government increases spending? Isn't the government buying products and services from (some) companies? And what about the impact of banks making it harder to obtain credit?

I see the stimulus twice for the most part: a little bit extra in my unemployment direct deposit, and a road sign at a project that was on the books for several years. Now I have to face the Census Bureau giving the NC Employment Security Commission some information on my work. The US Census Bureau — the home of fleet-footed enumerators and backlogs everywhere else. Unemployment benefits — a lifestyle designed for those who want to lose weight quickly, in the worst way.
I don't know that much about how Wilson governed. But I will say that FDR built his New Deal for an American public whose concepts of fair play were already shaped by the Grange Hall Populists of a generation before. We were, for the most part, a moral nation back then. Everyone believed certain things, and knew why they believed them. I can't say that now — except for a knee-jerk reaction to tell outspoken conservatives to shut up.
And we will not shut up!
Ron-Albuqueruque…I don't know what television station you have been listening to, but I have heard several programs that only have business people in the large audience and none of them have been shy! They can't get loans (Obama gave funds to the some banks to make loans) and if they can't get loans, they can not expand. I was in banking for forty-six years, and a lot of the businesses kept a credit line for monthly bills if receipts are low for that month With the restrictions that the government is placing on small businesses concerning writing a $600 check, there will be cost, cost, cost and paper work, paper work and paper work!!! I think the banks are hesitate to loan because they do not know what the Fed's are going to do to the interest rates!!!!
Google $600 cks small businesses…you will be shocked!!!!
