  • Morning Bell: Slouching Towards Irrelevance

Earlier this month while in Brussels, Vice President Joe Biden told the European Parliament that while “some American politicians and American journalists refer to Washington, DC as the ‘capital of the free world’ … it seems to me that this great city, which boasts 1,000 years of history and which serves as the capital of Belgium, the home of the European Union, and the headquarters for NATO, this city has its own legitimate claim to that title.” How revealing.

The European Union is a profoundly anti-democratic institution, created and forced on member states by internationalist leftist elites despite widespread public disapproval. It should be no surprise that the same administration that can’t bring itself to enforce our laws and protect our borders would give such strong support to an institution that has so undermined national sovereignty in Europe. And given that the EU’s unelected and unaccountable bureaucracy employs more people than the entire British Army it is no wonder that NATO member nations have been unwilling/unable to pull their weight in the Long War.

One might hope that the Obama administration would look at the path Europe has gone down (a bloated welfare state that saps economic growth and bleeds military spending) and decide to change course. But President Barack Obama’s speech at West Point on Sunday quashed any such hopes. Speaking to graduating Cadets, President Obama laid out the increasingly identifiable pillars of the Obama Doctrine: greater reliance on international institutions; substituting soft power for hard power; and a more subdued and less self-reliant America – a scheme designed more to manage American decline than to ensure its people remain safe, free and prosperous.

Last Friday Charles Krauthammer gave us a whirlwind tour of what the Obama Doctrine has looked like in action: failed engagement with Iran, surrender to Russia on missile defense, appeasement of Syria, support for pro-Chavez leftists in Honduras, and a gratuitous slap at Britain over the Falkland Islands. And what has it secured? A completely fake deal between Turkey, Brazil and Iran that will do nothing to slow Iran’s nuclear weapons program but has already made new meaningful sanctions next to impossible.

Instead of cutting domestic spending and reining in entitlements, President Obama passed a $862 billion failed stimulus and created a brand new health care entitlement all while laying the ground work for future cuts to our nation’s defenses. As Krauthammer wrote Friday: “This is retreat by design and, indeed, on principle.”

Perhaps, the worst thing about the speech was that the President made it in front of the men and women who will have to live with the immediate consequences of his actions. The Obama Doctrine will put them in harm’s way without the modern equipment they will need; with allies who will increasingly doubt our resolve; and at the mercy of an international order that will value their lives for less than the power which the White House wants to put in their hands.

Everything he say's is planned and scripted by "the others".

The "others" have a plan which consists of demoralizing our citizens by bankrupting our country intentionally weakening our defenses.

Watch now how "the others" systematically bankrupt the oil industry by overregulation, fines and ultimately nationalizing it.

Then watch "the others" become the new investors in the oil industry and the world's new trillionaires.

Make no mistake, Obama and "the others" will do everything they can to accomplish this.

    2. David Barth, CFA, Ju says:

The inefficiency manifested in the Federal Government's handling of the Gulf Oil Spill is a precursor of how they will manage Socialized Medicine; higher prices and rationed services.

      The HF quotes – Krauthammer.

THAT is BS on top of BS.

I keep hearing from More and More of you

      Thanks, and keep 'em coming

    4. James Penfold, Greel says:

Back in October Charles Krauthammer in a sense previewed what he wrote most recntly. In The Weekly Standard he talked about decline being a choice. Can 2010 come quickly enough and can the GOP stand success?

Interesting… I heard that the UN will sentence N. Korea to forty lashes with a wet noodle for their attack on S. Korea.

The O. doctrine is even worse than Britain’s Appeasement of Hitler. At least, according to Richard Evans, (three vol. tome on third Reich) England did have practical reasons, since England realized that at the time that it was completely unprepared militarily to take on Germany, hence, needed the appeasement to give them time to build up their military, which they did.

The same applies to the Russian-German agreement. Neither country was completely in the dark. but realized they were grossly underprepared at that time.

This later proved successful, since it allowed both countries to rapidly rearmament their military. And by August, 1941, Just 8 weeks after the Russian invasion, the German responsible for military armaments, committed suicide since he realized that Germany would lose the war, since it's enemies, which by this time also included the USA, would out produce Germany's armament output ten times.

    6. justapatriot, Texas says:

I weep for both my sons, who are serving in the Air Force. I'm so afraid that this administrations cowardly foreign policy could result in their deaths. And it would be for absolutely nothing. 2012 cannot come fast enough.

I pray for their safety, and all the men and women in uniform's safety until then.

    7. John Lindsey, Winter says:

I guess Joe Bidden forgot about all of the brave US men and women who fought and died to free Brussels from the Socialist Aggressors of WW2. If it wasn't for the this "Capitalist" nation, freedom would have surely died out in Europe. I can't wait to turn the Progressives (socialists) out of our government in November 2010.

    8. KB in PA says:

Day after day after day, we read (print media) and view (FoxNews) and listen to (talk radio) all about the ever-increasing number of catastrophic problems that are descending upon us so fast it's all but impossible to keep up. As such, we are awash in what is, by now, a very detailed knowledge of what is happening, what is being done, to us.

At some point, and some point soon, we must cease lamenting these things, and embark upon a deliberate, determined course of action, before it is too late, and there is nothing left for us to do but, as Ronald Reagan said, (paraphrase) sit around in our sunset years with our grandchildren on our laps, telling them about the great nation of freedom that used to be.

    9. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

The ONLY ULTIMATE goal of Progressives, from Obama on down the long list of anti-Americans, whom our complacency of the past has allowed to infest our Land, is to deliver the USA to World Socialism. Once you accept that premise, everything that is being done and is happening will make sense.

The true health and welfare of the USA are the farthest from these leftists' minds!

    10. Bettijo GA says:

Most parents want the next generation to be better off than they are. This administration obviously wants the next generation (and the next, and the next, and the next) to be worse off than they are.

    11. bigdave ocala fl says:

I sincerely hope HERITAGE can steer this ship away from a communist take over. People say this won't happen but then the MEDIA refuses to highlight all the communists/radicals Obama has brought into his administration, sans votes. Liberals are delusional if they do not understand the relationship between communism and socialism and their destructive impact on entire countries and peoples. For instance…there are no homeless people in communist china, or even in Europe! It is against the law!! And you must have a job too! No such thing as UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION!! Get a job or else! And the best part…NO SUCH THING AS ILLEGAL ALIENS!!! No PAPERS…go to prison, AND IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A STEP UP( per Jesse Jackson). Prepare to make a stand for your country.

    12. Barbara J. Souders, says:

It is mind-boggling to read the above information – not just read and realize but ask why this has happened, been allowed, why many elected officials – in the Congress and Senate – have not objected! I agree that this must be stopped, and that legally and as soon as possible. Please. This is and has been a special country, one to which people from all over the world for generations have fled, have seen as their opportunity to have a better future. And, this is a country where disagreement in opinion and in religious beliefs has been allowed – freedom of the press, plus!!!! Please, can something be done to change the present direction, and protect the established rights of citizens, and visitors. Thank you, Heritage, for what you are doing in alerting we the people.

    13. Dave, Colorado says:

charles K is right on…Obama hates what the United States was founded on and will stop at nothing to diminish our national sovereignty for his own demented agenda.

    14. Normca says:

That was the most disgusting event in the proud American's life time. To see Obama, as last year, but with 12 more months of his deeds, give a speech at the most prestigious institution to men and women who have accomplished more in their short lives than Obama will in his entire life, wall appalling. And aside form telling them what their world will look like, he stood their, with all of the graduating Lieutenants giving their full attention and and their commanding officers, many of whom also graduated there and also fought to preserve our great country, once again, criticized the former Commander in Chief. All the while disrespecting their code of honor. The current president of the United States does not have a dignified element in him. What I think of Barack Hussein Obama is nit fit for public consumption.

    15. Lew Massachusetts says:

I am very disappointed in our president and vice president, in presenting the softening of what America has stood for in the past (since the war of independence). President Reagan was right when he took pride in a Strong America, and a strong defense, and a protective military for the US and our allies.

We are losing respect throughout the world, and that is a frightening thought. LOT , Newburyport, MA

    16. Warren Lyckman Hills says:

Being old enough to remember the extreme downsizing of the Military (Army, Navy, Marines} that Roosevelt cast upon us and the extreme effort and money it took to rebuild after the beginning of World War Two was mismanagement at it's best. I'm afraid we are headed in the same direction. The Military budget will be continually chipped down until the errosian of our ability to defend ourselves may well be in jeopardy.

    17. Joe Mittelman, Lagun says:

As a veteran of WWII, it boggles my mind to see what has become of the country that hundreds of thousands of our comrades died to preserve. How this person who has accomplished nothing previously in his life and lives only to force our nation deeper into socialism, continues to demean and diminish our way of life is sad to watch. God willing, 2010 will put the brakes on his quest of ruination, and 2012 will end this madness. I only hope I will still be alive to experience it.

    18. Bob, Long Island says:

There have been presidents and congressmen on both sides of the isle with witch I have agreed and or disagreed. But I have never been afraid before as I am now. If there is not a decisive victory for the Repubs in November we will be in serious trouble.

    19. James A says:

The power of Nobel Prize for Barry dictates the language of Joe Biden, the State Department stance toward China and any others who speak on behalf for the United States.

Furthermore, Joe Biden is not the brights star in the orbit of government; but there are a lot of "stars" in government are dead and are moving aimlessly through our space. If these stars like Europe and its institutions, resign and pack and move to some country of choice.

      Leave me alone.

    20. Garrigues, Paris, Fr says:

I am in full disagreement with your fist comment: I'm French (and it would be worse if I was Danish); as such, I belong to a nation which is way too small to sit at the same table as MM. Hu Jintao, M. Singh and other B. Obama : we French just weigh nothing.

This is why we MUST regroup our forces and agglomerate into a new, larger, more powerful nation, with all our European neighbors. This is our only chance to make us heard in a dangerous and threatening world.

We started the thing back in 1957, that was too late ; we pushed it forward since then, that was too slowly ; we try to integrate and put together diplomacy, weapons etc, but an awful lot remains to be done.

The idea is terrific, the implementation is terrible : go ahead boys and girls !

    21. Ken Jarvis - Las Veg says:

      Explain to ME – LVKen7@Gmail.com

how THIS IS A BAD IDEA.

"The White House proposed a new tool Monday for

      trimming federal spending that would

force Congress to vote yes or no on a package of cuts.

      The plan

      would let

      the president

      comb through

spending bills he has already signed into law,

pick out items he deems wasteful,

bundle them into a package and

      send it to Congress

      where lawmakers could

vote "up or down" on the entire package—

      with no amendments." – WSJ

    22. Gray_Stroke in the R says:

Read Carroll Quigley's book: "Tragedy and Hope".

Bill Clinton's mentor wrote 1300 pages of how the solution to our global ills can only come from a central collectivist government.

We are now witnessing the last portion fall into place with the complicit media aiding and abetting the downfall of our Republic. Someone please turn out the lights on the way out to the gulag……..

They will not get voted out the 49% entitlement crowd has the full support of the media as poor victims and the 51% are busy working and will forget about voting these treasonous reprobates out of office……. sigh….(deep breath)

    23. Jim Richard, Sylvani says:

Blaming the current administration for the "illegals" is interesting. It is amazing that all of them came in since Jan. 20, 2009!

    24. Lil, San Diego says:

This president has demonstrated countless times his contempt and hatred for this nation! He has surrounded himself with people who hold these same attitudes. We must continue to fight this guy and his contemptuous attitudes, November can't come soon enough!

    25. John Braunig, Cape C says:

Our founding fathers did not risk thier 'lives, their fortunes, and thier sacred honor' so that a future generation of spoiled ingrates could squander the freedoms these great men risked everything for. It is time for we Americans to take off the rose colored glasses, wipe the fairy dust out of eyes and see these ingrates for what they are. We will no longer subsidize this treason!

    26. Lioness, Wisconsin says:

With Biden for VP, who needs enemies.

    27. marilyn - nashville, says:

for the first time in my life, i am ashamed of america…at least the policies of america. ashamed that our people were (and are) so easily deceived as to have even elected such a person as president.

    28. Blair, Franconia, NH says:

We're already irrelevant. We aren't slouching toward irrelevance. We're embracing it

    29. Shirley, Arizona says:

This is Obama's agenda. He does not care how deep in debt he puts our country. His handlers have put him on the path to destroy America as we know it to lead us to follow a World Government and this path will be through the United Nations.. As the only free nation left in the world with a Constitution that has provided us with freedom, it has to be destroyed in order for the elitist to gain power and have control over the world government. No, I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I have been following this for a long time and know what direction we are being lead to.

    30. Steve M., Santa Ana, says:

Obama's political ambitions seem perfectly clear; he is positioning himself to be U.N. Secretary General. Why else would he seek to destroy our economy while coddling those U.N. member nations on the political left?

He has no regard for our past or present, but only his future, which most certainly does not include being a 2-term president.

    31. Dave, Provo, UT says:

Ken J. you forget he already made the promise to veto any bill with pork earmarks in it. Show me one, just one bill he did that to. His promises are lofty, his implementation is laughable. Start looking at facts not hot air promises like the one that ALL the health care bill negotiations would be done in front of C-Span cameras. Did you see them? Nobody else did either. Only when both parties are held both accountable and not exempted from what they pass will common sense become common in government.

    32. Craig Sacramento ca says:

Makes me think back to world war two days. Had Obama been elected president back in the early 40's I doubt that he would have remained in office more than 2 weeks before he would be standing on trial for committing treason! Now I see that he is not going to attend any of the Memorial Day functions this year as he is going on vacation. Seems to me he is always going someplace on Air Force one nearly every week and must be spending hundreds of millions on his world tour. What a slap in the face to the many veterans who fought and died in many wars. Does this clown Obama fail to realize that he would not be here at had our valiant fighting men not sacrificed so he could be here and get elected as President and Commander in Chief? He is a particular a disgrace to the second part of his title. Let's pray that we can begin to remedy this problem in November by voting out his entire power base in Congress!

    33. Norm Klevens says:

Ken Jarvis – it is, I think a good idea. If it goes beyond just words. It seems to me he is playing to a group he does not like, has chastised and is growing too big to ignore. If he follows through, as he once said, red line pork and ear marks, I for one will pleasantly surprised. After spending in the last year and as he will until Nov, then he will once again sound fiscal. It is hoped by then he will have to go to the other party for money. Good luck.

    34. J. B. Jones, Bellair says:

Obama is a puppet and a vassal, as have been all our presidents going back to John F. Kenedy – who was killed because he refused to go along with the European politicians who put together the E.U. and are determined to rule the western world. It seems to me that they must be behind schedule and are desperate to subjegate us by some deadline they have.

Although someone once wrote a book and titled it "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", I concluded in 1957 (I was then 23) that Rome did not fall. This has been confirmed by Dr. Sally Vaughn, a History professor at the University of Houston. According to her, Rome did not fall – it morphed. (She did not say into what. I think I know what Rome's plan was – but study Roman History.)

It is dificult to escape the conclusion that the decendants of the old European Nobility constitute a European Super Party (super in the sense of "over") that acts in the same manner as a Corporate Holding Company. They stay pretty much out of sight, but controll all of the political parties of consiquince – in Europe and North and South America. The carrot is the promise of wealth and political power. The stick is blackmail or other threat.

Socialism, appealing to greed and envy, is not their end – but the means to their end – which is a return to the old model of governance which is Rullers and Subjects. Their goal is a return to Empire. They intend to rule the world.

They see us as sheep to be shorn, cows to be milked or horses to pull their carrages, waggons and plows; as their property.

    35. Tsunami, Canada says:

Being Canadian and a strong supporter of my American friends and neighbours it pains me to say this but while I see lots of talk there also seems to be a real change in America. All talk and not action or damn little. I spend many months in the States every year and get to see first hand.

Talk Freedom, Talk liberty, Talk independence,Talk Justice then turn around and vote somebody like Obama into your highest office. Talk is cheap.

Yes you can toss the bums out in November but I fear that the next bunch won't be much different regardless of party.

We in Canada are not much different but this is about you.

Wake up and get involved and take action not just sitting wringing your hands Oh Me Oh My Whatever shall we do???

    36. tony roberts says:

We must pray for our nation then do concrete footwork by voting for the conservatives in November. I do not mean Democrats as they are aiding and abetting the sad excuse we have for a President now destroying our country. Then when we have seized control of congress we must find whatever means we can to inpeach this man and reverse his policies.

    37. ENW - Port Orchard, says:

One question. Why was this man asked to speak at West Point? We know what he is and who he is. Shame on West Point.

    40. josey Maryland says:

Charles is right as usual. . .and if we don't take back our congress to conservatives we will be lost in obama's marxist agenda..He cares no more about our military overseas than the man in the moon. . .he hates the constitution and bill of rights and he hates anyone who does not belive in his agenda. . His ultimate mission is to destroy the United States and take all our rights away from each and everyone of us. .and our generations to follow will be in peril. . .for I fear they are not as strong as we are. . .We must get the right people in in 2010 to stop obamas agenda. .and elect those that believe in God and our laws and will enforce them. . and they must believe in the American people. . and our values. . .and come 2012 vote him out. . .

A simple case of the blind leading the stupid. It took stupid to put obama in office, he is blind to all that he does not think of, or approve of. May God help this country and our people, but first we have to admit that God is alive and turn from our ways and back to His ways.
