  • John Bolton on American Sovereignty Under a Post-American Presidency

CHICAGO – Protect America Month 2010, the Heritage Foundation’s annual series of events and publications aimed at highlighting key national security issues and promoting sensible defense and homeland security policies, hit the road today with a special address in Chicago by former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton.

Ambassador Bolton began his remarks by explaining why he refers to President Obama as a “post-American” president.

The first problem, he argued, is that President Obama doesn’t care about national security. It is not where his attention is focused. The second problem is that he doesn’t see threats to the U.S. overseas. He argued during his presidential campaign, for example, that Iran was a “tiny” country. The third problem is that President Obama appears to believe that American decline is not only inevitable, but also a good thing.

He looks at the world through a multilateralist prism and doesn’t really believe in American exceptionalism–something first spoken about by a Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville. President Obama, by contrast, when asked whether he believes in America exceptionalism answers yes, only in the way that “Brits believe in British exceptionalism, and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”

Put those features together with a foreign policy based on radical moral equivalences–such as the Administration’s outrageous equation of Arizona’s new immigration law and China’s routinely discriminatory and brutal treatment of foreigners and minorities–and you get what Ambassador Bolton calls the “Post-American” president.

Bolton argues that the Obama Administration’s approach has failed on Iran, on North Korea, in the Middle East, and on numerous other security issues because it is based on the view that all of the problems in the world are the consequence of our failure to negotiate.

He cautions that the Administration’s emphasis on negotiation could have serious costs. Negotiation–especially when waged ineptly and without moral clarity–often favors the proliferator. Ambassador worries that the Administration may have decided to accept a nuclear Iran, despite the fact that it would pose serious threats to the U.S.

Unless American’s demand a changed approach, and unless we keep national security at the top of the agenda–as Heritage’s Protect America month is doing–America could decline in ways that will be very difficult–if not impossible–to reverse.

    1. G Rome, Laguna Nigue says:

"You're either with us, or against us."

"They hate us for our freedom."

These are the words that the rest of the world heard for the last eight years. Neither of these statements can be construed as correct, but merely as weaponized rhetoric and myopic analyses of our current consideration in the eyes of the nations. No nation is completely "with us," though some are certainly and completely "against us." There is an immediate fallacy there. And if any nation hates us for our freedom, I would presume that their immediate anger would be more appropriately and conventionally directed toward their own nation, and their efforts to construct global terrorist attacks would far more easily be consigned to their own government that is preventing them from attaining the freedom that they so envy in the United States of America.

Bolton is an intelligent man, and I have agreed with many of his perceptions in the past. I do not agree with these assertions. I do not construe Obama as a man completely dispassionate about national security or our "special place" in the world. Yes, the U.S. has proven itself exceptional in the past century plus, most immortalized during World War II, but it has also grown fat and complacent in the aftermath of such ascension. In doing so, the United States has also acted like the tyrranical powers that carved up the world into colonies, waged financial and military wars against each other, and left the rest of the world in their wake. We are no longer permitted to view ourselves as exceptional. We are too beholden to too many other entities — that being the price of a globally-interconnected economy.

Perhaps it is time to disengage the ego some and attempt to work with other nations as a leader, not as a Caesar. I may disagree with much of the decisions of this Administration, but I also contain enough humility to realize that many lesser nations can attack us in news ways that bring us to the "standing eight" count, as did 9/11. At the very least, it makes little sense to inflame other temperments at our own peril, when we can properly apply the rules of politics to other nations while working in the background to get our way. That IS the American way.

    2. SB Owner Springfield says:

The irony of your last paragraph: Unless American’s demand a changed approach, and unless we keep national security at the top of the agenda–as Heritage’s Protect America month is doing–America could decline in ways that will be very difficult–if not impossible–to reverse.

This administration will never pay attention to the will of the people as they demostrated with Obamacare. This is no longer a Republic governed with the consent of the governed.

As Dr. Sowell eloquently stated recently about Obama's "at some point you've made enough money", when a president can set limits on income for a segment of the population, they are no longer 'public servants' rather 'public masters'.

    3. Cujo47 says:

That sums it up quite nicely. That is exactly what this man has intended from the very start of his presidency and exactly what will destroy us. If the people of this country don't wake up and take this country back we will surely get what we deserve. If it takes revolution, then so be it. It is high time the people started thinking about their children and not about themselves. Listen to Glenn Beck, he speaks the truth. Pay no attention to those in office as they all are accomplished liars. That is why they are called politicians.

    4. West Texan says:

Obama continues to move our country backwards to a European like all powerful administrative governance over its subjects. Fortunately for Americans, limited federal government and individual freedom were at the core of our nation's unique founding. As said, Obama and company are seeking to "CHANGE" this exceptional quality of our constitution and union of states.

    5. Rick, Minnesota says:

As always, Mr. Bolton is spot on with his comments. Trying to understand this philosophical ideologue that is Obama, and his "quest" for the radical egalitarianistic purge of the greatness that is America is amost akin to trying to understand why radical Islamists utterly believe in their own quest to destroy non-believers! Don't even try to attach rationality to the subject!!

      Very frightening!

    6. Dennis Social Circle Ga. says:

It is as one of his minnions stated on Meet The Press, “his rule begins on Jan. 20, 2009″, well I hope the American people are enjoying his rule. I do not and will not.

    7. Don Harper, Lubbock, says:

"And if any nation hates us for our freedom, I would presume that their immediate anger would be more appropriately and conventionally directed toward their own nation, and their efforts to construct global terrorist attacks would far more easily be consigned to their own government that is preventing them from attaining the freedom that they so envy in the United States of America."

I believe we are talking about a different set of people, not those who are jealous of our freedoms, but those that hate freedom because of the danger it poses to themselves. Think dictatorships and theocracies,e.g. North Korea and Iran.

    8. james , nev says:

GROME You are one sick puppy! It is a shame that you grew up in a liberal- hippy world. I grew up in Americas greatest time! We supported the World, fed the hungry, protected FREEDOM! Shame you dont understand that!

    9. Nick, Los Angeles says:

In order to get to the root problem of what is happening, not only in the US, but the world as a whole, you have to pull back the curtain and see who is really in control. Who are those that always benefit from the demise of countries? Who are those reorganizing the world geopolitical landscape? Look no further than the world bankers. Obama is no more than a puppet doing whatever his puppet masters tell him to do.

    10. Leon, Durango, CO says:

I've been blogging for a year about this truly evil Presidency, and all of a sudden I am fashionable. Obama is the perfect Manchurian Candidate, he is third generation radical Communist, so naturally he plays the same game Russia and China do. Negotiate, negotiate ad infinitum absurdum. Real Communists don't care about murdered millions, there is no God for them, so kill a few million here and there with Iranian Bombs? Reduce the excess population, like cattle.

Our Sovereignty comes from God and No One Else, that's the magic of American Sovereignty! See? Nobody can come between an American and their God and that protects us. God was used to unite the States, to make this rabble agree. Whether the Progressive Liberals (usurped by Communists) like it or not, under God is the law of the land. You cannot take God out! This is our foundation. Thus, ours is a unique nation and a unique people. We are Citizen Sovereigns and again Obama proves that brainwashed, he cannot understand America.

I'd like you to drop the other shoe on Citizen Sovereignty, we have Jury Nullification. We have, or used to have the vote until Obama learned how to throw/buy National Election. The very representation of voting was lost because Obama lied like a rug! If you lie to the voters, that attacks Representative Government. You are not who you say you are. Well, Obama in the service of the Communist Foreign Interest, for him to lie in an election is Treason. I say that is illegal, and since Obama and his family supported Communism during the Cold War, they are still Traitors now that they have taken over. Communism is an illegal, Unconstitutional form of government in this country. It is illegal and traitorous for Obama and his criminal empire to serve the old Soviet Interests. Look! The Government is doing your Faith, Hope and Charity for you, indeed usurping religion at its roots. Meanwhile Demo-crats misrepresent who and what they are. Tell me our Government is Representative! Baloney! Are you a Communist?

I wrote Obama's Articles For Impeachment, and of course I thought Traitors ought to hang, so I am a bad guy, I also predicted that mass murder was coming to America (as we go Communist). Investigate all of Obama's friends and honestly, hang the traitors. I love Bolten, but the explanation of the damage to our Sovereignty is barely touched. They've been at it a hundred years, the demolition plutocrats.

    11. Jeanne, MD says:

We need to protect our nation despite our lame president and

      his adminstration.

    12. Carla McCloskey, Was says:

John Bolton should run for President. He is the best thinker out there.

    13. 11th Generation Amer says:

How I wish John Bolton would run for U.S. President! I have yet to hear a single word he has uttered that I have disagreed with! By contrast, I have disagreed with virtually every word Barack Obama has issued since he stepped onto the national and especially international stage! John Bolton is a true patriot, while Barack Obama is an outright traitor to this country! I pray the American voter wakes up sufficiently from their intellectual malaise to vote Obama OUT in 2012, before he utterly ruins this nation and sells out our national sovereignty to the U.N.!
