  • Morning Bell: Don't Fall For Obama's Energy Shell Game

    Can the Obama administration’s desperate attempts to cover their true far left nature with centrist rhetoric and promises become any more transparent? Yesterday, the President announced “an expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration” in selected areas off the coasts of the United States. The President claims this announcement was made “in order to sustain economic growth and produce jobs,” but nobody believes him. Just take a quick look at today’s newspaper reporting:

    • The Los Angeles Times: “President Obama … unveiled a controversial offshore drilling plan Wednesday that was driven largely by the politics of his agenda on energy and climate change — not by hopes of changing the nation’s energy supply.”
    • The Washington Post: “President Obama’s decision … reflects a high-stakes calculation by the White House: Splitting the difference on the most contentious energy issues could help secure a bipartisan climate deal this year.”
    • Politico: “Obama’s decision is closely tied politically to the fate of the climate change bill jointly sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John Kerry (D-MA), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT).”
    • The New York Times: “The proposal is also intended to … help win political support for comprehensive energy and climate legislation.”
    • Bloomberg: “President Barack Obama’s pledge to expand offshore oil and natural-gas drilling may help Democrats deliver legislation that regulates carbon dioxide emissions before any fuel is produced.”

    In fact, if anything, the policies announced by President Obama yesterday will actually decrease and delay future U.S. oil production. The President actually canceled four lease sales off the Alaska coast that were planned to begin producing oil within the next two years, delayed a planned lease off Virginia until at least 2012, and placed some areas off limits for at least seven years. Go back and look at President Obama’s actual announcement again: he only promised new exploration off the Atlantic coast. There is absolutely no guarantee that any new drilling will ever occur. Secretary Ken Salazar’s Interior Department still has full discretion to never allow a single drop of oil to be harvested from these waters. And that doesn’t even begin to address the court challenges the enviro-left will employ to attack and delay the entire process.

    So if developing new energy sources that can create private sector jobs for Americans and new revenues for financially strapped states and the federal government is not the Obama administration’s real goal, then what is? Well, President Obama’s Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who was at yesterday’s announcement, has said, “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” For reference purposes, when Secretary Chu said that, Europeans were paying $8 a gallon for gas at the pump.

    Canceling current offshore oil leases and delaying future ones are not the only policy means the Obama administration is using to pursue the high energy price policy ends. The Obama administration has also declared war on energy production in the Mountain West, rescinding oil-shale development leases in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. His administration has completely failed to take on the real regulatory reforms necessary to allow a private sector nuclear industry to thrive. And just this week, the Obama Environmental Protection Agency began its regulation of carbon emissions through the Clean Air Act.

    And let’s not forget the grand daddy of them all: a cap and trade energy tax bill. But don’t call it that. Secretary Salazar told CNBC yesterday, “I think the term ‘cap and trade’ is not in the lexicon anymore.” Whatever you call it, placing an arbitrary penalty on carbon emissions would mean disaster for the American economy. The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis has found that cap and tax legislation would cost the average family of four almost $3,000 per year, cause 2.5 million net job losses by 2035, and produce a cumulative gross domestic product (GDP) loss of $9.4 trillion between 2012 and 2035.

    So don’t be fooled by President Barack Obama’s energy rhetoric. High energy prices are not a side effect of climate legislation – they are the whole point. According to the latest Pew poll, 63% of Americans support allowing more offshore oil and gas drilling in U.S. waters. Americans deserve an energy policy that reduces prices, creates private sector jobs, and reduces our national debt. Right now they have the opposite.

    • According to the latest Gallup poll, more Americans now blame President Barack Obama for the poor economy and unemployment with half now saying he deserves at least a moderate amount of blame.
    • The same federal judge who put supporters of California’s pro-marriage Prop. 8 on trial for bigotry, ruled yesterday that National Security Agency’s post-9/11 surveillance program was illegal.
    • According to the latest poll from the Democratic polling firm Democracy Corps, voters are deeply concerned about the federal budget deficit and overwhelmingly choose spending cuts over tax increases — 71% to 18% — to bring down the deficit

      At long last a very modest initiative to explore for oil off of the Eastern seaboard,

      while at the same time dissolving any chance of exploration in the west

      (Pacific Ocean or shale oil in the western states), which is where we would find

      the biggest reserves. The combined exploration, application for permits to drill and the construction of off shore rigs normally takes 15-20 years.

They still can't figure out that they are the reason for where they are in life. Wait until they find out that the rising gas prices will affect their trips to the corner store for beer and cigarettes. They'll probably blame the gas prices on the oil companies and corner store owner/operator. Spurred on by the "progressive" congress who blame everyone for everything, except themselves and their punitive policies.

      I live in Utah where the feds own almost 70% of the land. This means we have few resources to fund our schools so every gas/oil/mineral dollar from our school trust lands found in the fed land is desperately needed. However the Obama administration has found ways to rescind, delay and deny exploration and development of these resources. It won't be any different with the off shore oil development.

      About 6 months ago, the writer was watching a news program on oil and

      one of the Forbes Bros. was the guest. The host said to Forbes, "I am going to

      ask you a direct question and I would like a direct answer; how much oil

      does the U.S. have in the ground?" Forbes did not miss a beat, he said, "more

      than all the Middle East put together." Please read below.

      The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April 2008 that only

      scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a

      revised report (hadn't been updated since 1995) on how much oil was in

      this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota, western South Dakota, and extreme eastern Montana …… check THIS out:

      decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up

The more I discuss this with people who come into my office the more I am convinced the public IS becoming informed and changes will be made.       First Obama has cancelled all potential near future production activities exchanging them for a haphazzard selection of exploration sites all in questionable areas ignoring proven and economical solutions. I, in 1986 submitted a program, to the Department of Energy that would reduce the costs of building new nuclear power plats by 30 to 50 percent. It could still have a reasonable wconomic, ecological and environmental benefit in todays society. We have too long been hampered by the many EPA regulatory constraints engeneered by environmental radicals.

It didn’t take me long to understand that “good” was a synonym for “pain”.       2. There is more oil in the North Dakota basin than there is in Saudi Arabia. Why isn't this source of energy being pursued? More jobs for American people, less dependence on foreign sources (pronounced "enemies"). Do you suppose this has anything to do with some political issue in the Obama administration?

      And the sad part of this whole abortion of an administration, is that in recent polls, over 50% of the people of the USA would vote for this man and his band of bandits again. Wake up America!!

      This makes me wonder. BObama states that he is opening the shores for off shore drilling. As most of us know, this process will have to most likely be approved by congress and the epa. He makes his appeal to increase energy production, so that he can say he is pushing for more supplies, while on the other hand he knows full well that the epa and congress will be thrown under the bus for political expediency, because they either won't pass it or create such a delay that it will never happen in our lifetime. Isn't that why he stated that we will probably never see any drop in gas prices for many years to come?

With all of the incentives, tax breaks, subsidies, & record profits, etc., big oil gets, it would have been easy for them to build "clean" refineries but they and the right wing nut Republicans they run with know that if you keep the supply low, the price is going to go high and higher and the nets will be high and higher too…The only time you people want the price to go down is right before one of your goons in the White House is up for re-election. That is bad for capitalism and for America when all is said and done but, for you greed mongers, who cares about America?

      Frostproof from Florida has really taken a big sip of that Bakken Formation tea…kind of like the Opium tea those Tea Partiers have been partaking of.

      Bakken has estimates of 4.3 billion "technically recoverable barrels" but hard to access and very expensive crude oil..mostly shale and sand….Where he and they get that $16/bbl price is beyond anyone's imagination and totally ridiculous…

      The US uses about 20,000,000 barrels of crude (refined) every day. Divide that 4.3 billion barrels of "technically recoverable" crude at Bakken and see how long that lasts…even if we could refine it…Of course, it won't be "recovered" all at one time, will it? Of course not! And old Frostproof forgets that if all that crude was recoverable tomorrow, we couldn't begin to refine any of it because we don't have the capacity to refine the crude we have access to!

      Even the FOX REPUBLICAN PROPAGANDA NETWORK hasn't fallen for that "pressure cooker" stock pushing group Frostproof has obviously invested in. Forbes hasn't either or his magazine would be going crazy touting the story on the magazine cover if it was as good as Frostproof seems think. WHERE IS THE GOLDRUSH????? OR CRUDE RUSH?????

      Oh, and how long will it take to "recover" all that crude…and then "refine it" in refineries we don't have….and then get it to the pump at a price that won't shock the domestic economy. Never forget that oil companies won't pull crude of any sort out of the ground unless world crude is high. When the price drops, producers shut the wells down….because they all work under the principle that if the supply is tight the price will be higher…and if the supply is loose, the price at the pump will be lower….Whatever it takes to keep the price high is what the oil industry from the well to the refiner to the pump will do…..but, then, why would I expect the whores of the plutocrats, oligarchs and corporatists to grasp any of that….

How about a reduction in the marginal tax rates to stimulate spending by the general population?
