  • Side Effects: Obamacare Doesn't Work on Children After All

A signature achievement of Obamacare, we were told, was that it would provide immediate protection for children with pre-existing conditions.  In the brave new world of Obamacare, no ailing child could be denied coverage.

Turns out, that just ain’t so.  According to the Associated Press, “Under the new law, insurance companies still would be able to refuse new coverage to children because of a pre-existing medical problem, said Karen Lightfoot, spokeswoman for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the main congressional panels that wrote the bill Obama signed into law Tuesday.  However, if a child is accepted for coverage, or is already covered, the insurer cannot exclude payment for treating a particular illness, as sometimes happens now.”

It’s a problem Congress could have fixed without resorting to a massive restructuring of our health care system.

How? Well, they could have made some simple changes to insurance rules to make sure policies will cover conditions discovered after the policy is issued.  They also should have moved to provide a path for the uninsured to get coverage of pre-existing conditions on a conditional basis.  And they certainly should have made it possible for individuals to buy coverage from outside their states. This would both allow consumers to shop on a national basis for health insurance that best suits their needs and expand the coverage options available to them.

In a recent video, Heritage analyst Ed Haislmaier lays out how best to reform the insurance market to meet the needs of Americans with pre-existing conditions.  To learn more about patient-centered, bipartisan approaches to health care reform, click here.

Thank you, Kathryn for bringing this information to our attention. Would you have someone double check the use of the word "by" in the 4th paragragh, 3rd sentence?

    2. MJF, CT says:

This is what happens when you push a huge bill through without allowing scrutiny. It is going to take years of "correction and redesign" to do what a simple adjustment could have provided. Better yet, if the "concerned Representatives" would have communicated their requests to the private insurance companies, I am sure that the companies would have worked with these "concerned Representatives". Instead, we have chaos, mandates, taxes and socialism of health insurance leaving us no better than countries that have proven that this is a failed system. Nice job, President Obama!

    3. Margaret Horvath, Ri says:

When Americans decide they do not want to be "Progressive Europeans", have have our money worth nothing then maybe we can do something about this lack of respect for our people. The country did not elect a dictator, it elected a President. The office of President is not a good place for "on the job training". Anyone running for office must be properly VETED. Even people working in the white house need to be looked at to see if they even like this country!

    4. MrShorty - Arizona says:

I can only conclude that the Democrats were so wrapped up in their desire to "pass something" that they passed a bill that had not been thoroughly reviewed, or as Pelosi stated, "you have to pass it to find out what's in it".

Well, Nancy, it has been passed and we are finding out what's in it….

Either you have lied to us all along or you are an idiot. No middle ground on this one.

    5. jill.hetherington Ma says:

It's not about providing health care, it's about power and control. This president is successfully destroying the best country in the world and I saw a poll last night that said he would win reelection if we were having a presidential election now. I don't have any hope for us.

    6. Concerned, Mequon WI says:

The truth hurts…and in this instrance it hurts kids. This administration has lied consistantly. They are evil..

    7. Dave - Chelsea, MI says:

With Insurance Companies announcing that they will provide coverage, the rumor that the Administration and Majority Party have committed to "fixing" the glitch through Regulatory Action, confirms the rumor to be true.

    8. O Suemnick says:

Once again we witness half truths by Congress to have their way. We Americans need to hold congress accountable for what they say. When will enough be enough.

    9. Don Harper, Lubbock, says:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply

cannot exist as a permanent form of government.

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time

that voters discover that they can vote themselves

generous gifts from the public treasury. From that

moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates

who promise the most benefits from the public treasury,

with the result that every democracy will finally

collapse due to loose fiscal policy…"

Alexander Fraser Tytler, Scottish lawyer & writer, 1770

We made it for 240 years. I fear we may be near the end of our run.

Welcome to the Soviet Republic of the United States!!!!!

    11. Drew Page, IL says:

Do you actually mean that President Obama said something that proved to be untrue about the health care reform bill? Since the President didn't bother to read the bill before signing it, he can learn what's in the bill just as we will, as it unfolds.

Readers in this space keep talking about holding Congress accountable. The only way I know how to do that is to vote them out at the earliest possible time. It doesn't seem nearly enough of a punishment though for what they have done, but I guess it will have to do.

    12. Sam, WI says:

Thanks Don for the qoute, I had heard one like it (might have been someone paraphraising) and I had been wondering who the quote was atributed to.

As for insurance companies not denying people due to pre-existing conditions, I figured that the consequence would simply be that those people still would not be able to get coverage since the premium would be so high.

    15. Daniel, Houston Texa says:

To All 535 voting members of the Legislature; it is now official you are ALL corrupt morons:

? The U.S. Post Service was established in 1775. You have had 234 years to get it right and it is broke.

? Social Security was established in 1935. You have had 74 years to get it right and it is broke.

? Fannie Mae was established in 1938. You have had 71 years to get it right and it is broke.

? War on Poverty started in 1964. You have had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to "the poor" and they only want more.

? Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have had 44 years to get it right and they are broke.

? Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 39 years to get it right and it is broke.

? The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than ever before. You had 32 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.

You have FAILED in every "government service" you have shoved down our throats while overspending our tax dollars

    16. Dave K,Puget Sound says:

A entity by fiat and edict, not deliberative and representative government, has designed and merged "Tragedy of the Commons" with the "Broken Window Fallacy" and pushed the shards of the beast through the body of our freedoms charters and chained us and those who are even yet to be.

The consequences- backwards, and possibly lethal to our nation.

Repeal this atrocity, and reveal the true nature of what it seeks to do.

    17. Tom, TX says:

Voting that corrupt garbage out DC will not be nearly enough punishment in my humble opinion. I say federal prosecution for all the political liberty destroying DC trash and good long prison sentences in GITMO. In GITMO they would be forcibly held outside of our borders – exiled from US freedom in a way. Now that is a far fetched dream I could really enjoy becoming a stark reality for all these corrupt politicians. I think that would be just enough punishment for their corruption and the stealing our individual freedoms.

I totally agree, but do you honestly think that many people are still asleep? 99% of the people I talk with are so sick and scared of this man and what he's done to this country in under a year. I pray our governor joins the 14 other states in going against obamacare.

      let me be clear!

the people who passed this know exactly what they are doing.

now that we know, we need to get rid of them.

ps how can obama have over a 70% approval rating in the state of hawaii? thank god we have no influence on anything……lol.

      wheres the edit function.

over 70% approval in hawaii, i meant to say….

    23. Jean, Indiana says:

The government, for the past 65 years has been "breeding" generations of people dependent on the government for their very being, through "the new deal, war on poverty, etc. Does anyone think these millions of people will vote againt the progessives who provide them with their exsistence? I don't! As Jill, in her above post said, "I don't hold any hope for us."
