  • SEIU's White House Visits Are Paying Off

    SEIU Health Care Protest

While most Americans were enjoying a weekend away from work, President Obama kept busy Saturday afternoon, appointing one of Big Labor’s lawyers to a post at the National Labor Relations Board.

The recess appointment of Craig Becker was expected—despite the Senate’s bipartisan rejection of him in February. The White House knew media coverage would be minimal on the weekend, but Becker can’t escape the scrutiny. (Heritage’s Ryan O’Donnell wrote about the controversial pick last week.)

Prior to his appointment, Becker served as associate general counsel to the Service Employees International Union. The union, which spent an estimated $66 million in 2008 for Obama’s election, has been rewarded dearly for its support. Becker is the third SEIU leader tapped for a post by Obama.

SEIU President Andy Stern and Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger are among the most frequent visitors to the White House. Public records released by the Obama Administration show that Stern made 38 trips to the White House and Burger made 43 visits through Dec. 31, 2009. This prompted Americans for Tax Reform and the Alliance for Worker Freedom to request a lobbying investigation into the SEIU given its close ties to the White House. (Stern is not a registered lobbyist.)

The appearance of preferential treatment hasn’t stopped Obama from rewarding his allies at SEIU. Stern was picked in February to serve on Obama’s debt commission. Burger was tapped for Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board in 2009. And now Becker, despite Senate opposition, has secured a coveted appointment to represent the Big Labor’s interests at the NLRB.

No surprise here. And someone explain to me just why government folks need to unionize anyway.

    2. Dean,, Southport, NC says:

Does this shock anyone? Another socialist move. The Dems should be proud of their leader.

    3. Karin, PA says:

This guy can't be stopped can he?

    4. Ann, Georgia says:

Wow, sounds like the 20's & 30's all over again. Big labor. Common man won't have a chance. Thugs will rule and Communisim will consume the nation.

    5. Billie says:

The unions in government are aids to the government's corruption, PERIOD. to have unions behind government reveals the weakness of government. and the bigger this weakness in government gets, the less free we are. obama believes in destroying human dignity. He only believes in happiness that he hands out.

    7. Blair, Richboro, PA says:

Here is just another example of progressives awarding one of their own a position in the inner circle of the intellectual elite. If union leaders can mobilize their membership to support the progressive cause the leftists might just have enough soldiers to complete the fascist government takeover that Jonah Goldberg warns us of.

    8. Sam says:

Obama could care less about the proper process and will take shortcuts to obtain anything. He is a political terrorist and has taken a shortcut to White House as he's not even a citizen of the United States. It's easy to see that he has "0" interest for the well being our country because he's not even an American.

    10. Vince Md says:

What does the SEIU union members union contract state in regards to how SEIU will use the dues paid and any profits made as a result of those dues ?

    11. John, Greenwood Vill says:

This is just what we needed. Not only have the unions contributed to the problems of GM and Chrysler, they are hell-bent on their greed wrecking the US as well. I only hope America can hold out until November and 2012 when we can get back on track. Enough of tax cheats running IRS, an AG that will not uphold the constitution, and it goes on.

    12. Robert, Fort Meade says:

Just wait until illegal immigration "reform" tries to fill the union ranks and democrat voting block with new blood. Stern wants a new world order. And cardcheck will intimidate all with imposing view. The corruption used to pass bills during this administration is just a forerunner for the unchecked corruption that will exist in the government totalitarian bureaucracies created from the bills.

    13. Tom in Michigan says:

Ten Republicans did not vote. Why?
