  • All Rhetoric, No Reality from White House on Health Care

    President Obama with Doctors

Flanked, again, by doctors in lab coats, President Barack Obama gave yet another speech this afternoon urging Congress to pass his health care reform plan.

The President again claimed his plan lowers health care costs. It doesn’t.

The President again claimed his plan would not give government bureaucrats or insurance company bureaucrats more control over health care. It does.

The President again claimed that “if you like your plan, you can keep your plan. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” That simply is not true.

The President again said his plan gives the American people the same health care as Members of Congress. It doesn’t.

The President again claimed his plan is paid for. It is not.

The only “new” wrinkle in this speech was President Obama much telegraphed call for “an up or down vote” on health care reform. Again the White House is completely out of touch with reality. The Senate has already passed Obamacare. It is currently sitting ready for a vote in the House of Representatives. The House could pass Obamacare into law by an up-or-down/simple-majority vote tomorrow if they so desired.

But the simple reality is that they don’t have the votes. The House may be controlled by an overwhelming Democratic super majority, but the Obama administration simply does not have the 50% plus one votes they need to turn their top domestic priority into law.

Now the President is claiming he has some new plan that he all of a sudden wants a brand new vote on in the Senate. But that is not going to happen any time soon. President Obama says he is open to four specific conservative ideas, but the White House has produced no details or even legislative language for this new plan. And even if the White House ever does produce such language, it would then have to go to the Congressional Budget Office for scoring.

More importantly, simply adding so-called conservative ideas to the bill does not change the fundamental direction of the proposal. The bills before Congress, including the President’s new additions, would still result in a massive shift of power over health care financing and delivery of care to Washington politicians and bureaucrats. The public has spoken, and it does not want a federal take over of health care.

Conservatives should continue to press the Administration and leaders in Congress for bipartisan solutions that are based on elements of common ground, including letting states take the lead on health reform, tackling the tax treatment of health insurance, sensible insurance market reforms, and an honest commitment to fixing existing health care programs that the government already controls.

    1. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

Ask the physicians what it's like being used as stage props for Obama's cheap sales pitch. What will it take for a majority in congress to understand they're subverting the U.S. Constitution with their proposed national healthcare intrusion. Social entitlements such as medical coverage are domestic concerns belonging to the independent states.

    2. Billie says:

"because I know it's right" Obama. As the crowd explodes. The crowd being those who have lost or never had the ability to think freely for themselves. They all break into obama mania as they are too weak to think beyond, so rhetoric is their truth. Obama is the rhetoric. This bill isn't right at anytime.

How do we really know those guys in white jackets are doctors? Many people play the part of something they're not, all for obama's pleasing and backing.

What the president says is, he has no problem with the concerns addressed, no problem with misleading the country into take over, no problem fabricating this important issue only to destroy our inalienable rights.

Who will take the hero's stand and stand for the people of this country?

    3. mac says:

Again I point out that Obama is just reading what was written for him. He would probably think a monkey on a white coat was a DR.

Both Democrats and Republicans must, for the future of our country IGNORE him. I they just tell him whatever they do is what he said he will pat himself on the back and grin.

    4. Ozzy6900, CT says:

Well Mr. President, it's ether you do not have a clue or you are so dumb that you don't really know what is going on. You keep insisting that we can keep our own plans when it is plain as day in the bill that we will eventually all be on the Government plan. You insist that we have to do this to curb the cost of health insurance when this plan costs so much, it is liable to put the America totally broke.

And then you have the audacity to say to the American People "The plan has been discussed every way and by every one but now it is time to get the bill moving". The American People have spoken and they do not want your disaster of a plan. If you don't listen to Us, then you need to be removed!

    5. Erik, Utah says:

Is the author serious? All of the links he provides as support for his BS talking points are links to far-right wingnut websites. They also probably claim the earth is 5000 years old. Is the right just completely uninterested in facts in any form? What a crock.

    6. John B. SanDiego says:

Hey how about those smocks, I was impressed, where are the stethoscopes and temporal thermometers in the pockets that made it sort of lackluster.

      Maybe another photo-op.

Hey truthfully smoke and mirrors is what I saw.

Can I ask questions and make a few comments please Mr. Carroll?

I want to ask; where is the debate on the role of government?

Government was never intended to be everything for everybody.

I submit that once government extends its reach past the points outlined in "Our Constitution" government becomes overbearing and ultimately worthless to anyone.

There exists no free "Obamacare" it is either a pipe dream of some greatly misinformed individuals or it may truly be constructed in such a way to harm "Our Precious Republic" with social guarantees we can not afford.

We could likely subsidize Thirty Million uninsured more affordably than pulling the rug from under Two Hundred Eighty Million.

The cost of ever growing numbers of bureaucrats alone proves that; and those numbers of bureaucrats will increase.

What about our rights under the Tenth Amendment, Do we just forget them?

This about preserving Our Republic not Obama and certainly not Obamacare.

"Give me Liberty or Give me Death!"

Or… in this case I will settle for both……no one lives forever not even if they have Obamacare. DUH-HUH!

Constitutional challenges, and a movement for repeal if ObamaCare is passed.

And if Obama wants a vote, bring it to the floor NOW. Up/down vote in the house on the Senate bill right now. As Obama says, lets finish this right now. Peloisi can have the vote tomorrow.

Time for the Democrats to put up or shut up.

    8. Billie says:

Get it done. Kill the bill! If it can't be reasoned with upon reason, it is not worth trusting.

    9. Barbara F Delo says:

    12. SB Owner Springfield says:

The president proves two things are certain; he is a ridged ideologue (progressive/socialist), and he can't be trusted for one thing he says or claims.

Following the avalanche of broken promises from his camapign, and the dismal results of his economic Stimulus plan who can possibly believe him other than like minded progressives?

I question if those are real doctors in his photo op announcement? How could they support their own demise?

Insurance companies are being hoisted by their own petard believing their $19.4 milllion in campaign contributions would protect them. They falsely believed that their lobbyist success in having the president remove the public option would lead to massive profits when all Americans are mandated to purchase their product.

What they didn't count on was the mandate to accept pre-existing conditions AND government price controls. They get what they deserve.

This is a bad bill that continues the progressive attack upon the private sector, that will certainly break the bank.

Should this pass it must be repealed or there will be a second revolution to 'abolish or alter' a destructive government that denies our unalienable rights as declared in the Declaration of Independence.

    13. EJM, Geneva says:

The photograph with the two in white coats behind Obama is unintentionally hilarious. They look like they're letting him have his Napoleonic moment, before coaxing him back into his padded cell at the mental ward. Hope he has coverage for a long stay there.

    14. kidneystones, Japan says:

Spot-on. The government is not riding to the rescue. Services are not going to be better and costs are going to rise. The innovation that keeps the US health system the best in the world may disappear if firms are not allowed to profit. Or the best firms will simply relocate to more business friendly environs, which won't affect the very rich at all, but will mean everyone else pays a lot more and or does without.

    15. redmanrt, Montevideo says:

It's not about health care. See the article by Michael Graham about RomneyCare in the Boston Herald at http://www.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/vi….

It's about preparing an all-out assault on the private sector. And, I add, on our institution of contested elections.

    16. Kevin Habib, Glen Bu says:

He's not ignoring the will of the American people – he's ignoring the will of health insurance lobbyists, Pharma lobbyists and for-profit hospital lobbyist.

When you break down the main proposals in the president's plan, Americans are overwhelming in support of it. But when people are asked misleading questions about death panels and government takeovers and all the other 'kill bill' terms from Frank Luntz's March 09 memo – far less support the bill.

During Nov '08 exit polls, Health reform was the #2 issue for voters. The AMA supports this reform. The doctors and surgeons supports it. AARP supports it. The ones who are opposed are shell neocon groups like Conservatives for Patients Rights – founded by CEO of for-profit hospitals.

Who do you trust? Doctors and surgeons OR the health insurers and for-profit hospitals that are the main reason we are in such health crisis.

Hopefully, more and more of the right will wake up.

Yesterday, we saw prime example of what the elected GOP officals think of their constituents – the RBC presentation mocked their donors and said they could peer pressure them and use fear to get them to do what they want.

You have to push through the lies. I ask that each of you go ask your personal doctor if he/she is for reform and not listed to politically biased orgs who just want to score politcal victories instead of helping the country and the future of the economy.

I'm glad we finally have a president and congress with the courage to take on these politically difficult choices. GOP had a decade to fix health – they admit the status quo is terrible – but they never did anything.

    17. Drew Page, IL says:

Why is Mr. Obama ignoring the will of the people, you ask? Because he can. At least for now.

Go ahead Mr. President, you know better than anyone else what's best for them, ram it through using the nuclear option and see what happens. You want to test the will of the majority? You want to see for yourself what the majority thinks? Go ahead and shove it down our throats. Then stand back and watch.

Obama says adding 30 million people to our healthcare system saves money, so let's use the same plan for energy, education and defense to save even more money!

Add 30 million SUV's and we will spend less on energy. Add 30 million new students so education will cost less. Add 30 million soldiers to our military and the defense budget will decrease.

      Obama is a genius!!

    21. David, Oklahoma says:

Funny how the President didn't like the "props" used at the so-called summit on Feb 25, when the massive bill was being shown in print. Yet now stagecraft is important and acceptable, being flank by white coats. As a physician, I find it an offensive tactic. It is obviously intended to send the signal that doctors support his efforts to reform healthcare. I am sure that there are many liberal physicians in the country, just as their are liberal firefighters, liberal coal miners, liberal stock brokers… name the profession. But I also know there are many of us in the field who are adamantly opposed to his reform approach, for a variety of reasons. I believe it is universally accepted in the medical community that we have a broken system; but it is no where near universally accepted that the Democrats or President Obama have the solution.

And why is there little-to-no coverage of the multiple bills introduced by Conservatives, including the one co-sponsored by Senator Coburn (a physician) that was introduced to committee months before the original Democrat versions? It would seem to me that Conservatives have been bringing many ideas to the table for a long time, but Democrats are blocking them due to pure partisanship.

    22. Conn Carroll Conn Carroll says:

      Habib writes:

"When you break down the main proposals in the president’s plan, Americans are overwhelming in support of it."

Yeah if Obamaweek asks only about the free stuff in Obamacare, of course its gonna get majority support. But in the real world, nothing is ever free.

That garbage newsweek poll asks nothing about higher taxes on health plans, does not ask about $500 billion in Medicare cuts, and does not ask if 18 million more Americans want to be put on Medicaid.

But please Habib, please do keep ignoring all the rest of the polling and keep pretending that the American people support Obamacare.

Just like Massachusetts in January you are set for a big slap in the face from reality in November. Enjoy it.

From a teacher in the Nashville area

"We are worried about 'the cow' when it is all about the 'Ice Cream.' The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have.

We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia’s mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded and he sat down. Now it was Olivia's turn to speak.

Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down. The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream." She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn’t sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it… She didn’t know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten… Olivia won by a landslide.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and 52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream. The other 48 percent know they're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess." This is the ice cream Obama promised us!

    27. Dan, Kansas City says:

Why is he so blatantly ignoring the will of the American people?

Because, as diagnosed by Dr. Sam Vaknin,an Israeli psychologist, author of the 'Malignant Self Love' and a world authority on narcissism claims he is either a pathological narcissist or has a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).

He goes on to say, "Narcissists are often callous and even ruthless; they lack conscience they care for no one but themselves. This is evident from Obama's lack of interest in his own brother who lives on only one dollar per month. A man who lives in luxury, who takes a private jet to vacation in Hawaii, and who raised nearly half a billion dollars for his campaign (something unprecedented in history) has no interest in the plight of his own brother. Why? Because, his brother cannot be used for his ascent to power."

That's why he blatantly ignores the American people!!!

The majority of Americans do NOT want ObamaCare. We must contact our House of Representatives Member and convey that they in no way should vote for any Bill that is a vehicle to establishing Government-Run Healthcare.

Do you suppose he could be a puppet? see( YouTube – The Obama Deception HQ Full length version) How many in Congress are involved, also? As far as the insurance companies, their profit was 3% or less. Not the villians as protrayed, either. You need to understand that the progressive blueprint is to overload the system to bring it down. Jobs should have been at the top of his priorities, but not if you are a progressive. In order for everyone to be equal, you can't have prosperity with jobs. Bring down the rich first, then overload the systems like medicare and all others, too. The goal is global and socialism. It is already in play with Andy Stern in SEIU and the unions. He already had overseas SEIU up and going. Bring down the dollar and our AAA rating and exchange the dollar for another like yen, peso, or maybe euro. This is just a start.

I do not think the fed/ gov't. should be involved in medical care, the Ins. co.'s need to reign in thier cost and be accountable for how premiums are used, this however comes under the Insurance commissioners in respective states, I also believe it should be that you can buy Ins. like you do life Ins, and it goes where you go. If those that think the Gov't is the answer, take a LONG,Hard look at Medicaid, Medicare, Veterens care and those that have families and are in military. Everything from P.O. down and including Soc. Sec. is a mess WHY??, They are run by the Feds. There is nothing in the constitution saying that the goverment takes care of you from cradle to grave founding fathers provided that you have the freedom to work and provide for your family and it's called personal responsibility.
